To start with, this book is very well made but other than the title, there’s nothing about it that would make me believe it’s for kids. The text is from the ESV version; classic, formal English - not a child’s version. The artwork is black line art; not a color or character to be found. No cute end papers to draw them in, no page pops with reminders or buzz phrases to be found.
“Unfolding Grace for Kids” is a Survey of 40 highlights thru Biblical history broken down into 7 Parts:
1. The Story Begins 2. God’s People Redeemed 3. God’s Kingdom Established 4. God’s Kingdom Declined and Partially Restored 5. The Hope of Restoration 6. The Dawning of the Kingdom 7. The Gospel Spreads and All Is Made New
Parts 1-5 are studies from the Old Testament and 5-6 from the New Testament. Each part has between 4-8 unique studies that are comprised of an art piece, introduction and 3-4 page study. There are no notes or references beyond the noted scripture references.
All things considered, a good edition to any library and great option for family reading time📚
Really pretty disappointed with this one. Throwing in the towel for reading this with the kids. The scripture selections were several half told stories (so far, the Noah story was only the very ending, also the Joseph narrative was only the reconciliation scene with his brothers). While I understand there are parts of many stories in scripture that are not appropriate for kids - simply telling the ending - or even half, is just a bit strange. Honestly I’d rather have either most of it, or none of it at all.
Also, the ESV text is still the ESV text. While I love this translation as my go to for a relatively word for word equivalent, for my children of 6 and 7 I need something much simpler. I wish they would have made a children’s ESV translation for this book. As it is - my kids just aren’t comprehending it. An NLT book of this kind on the other hand would be welcome!
All that said, this may be good for older kids who are good with English, as long as you don’t mind that several of the stories are cut in half.
