Awful Reckoning: A Cade Chase and Simon Pack Novel

In the heart of Silicon Valley, antifa kidnaps a Stanford student, the daughter of Wil Chambers, a man of exceptional wealth. Long ago, as football teammates at LSU, Wil and Cade Chase pledged mutual in extremis assistance. Cade drops his plans for transforming American secondary education and leaves Rockledge, not knowing when or if he will return. What follows is the toughest endeavor Cade has ever undertaken, because it challenges his conceptions of friendship, morality, right and wrong. Although this grisly tale begins with the kidnapping of Julie Chambers, it quickly morphs into something that veers far off the standard kidnap script. Cade’s tiny hand-picked squad has the courage, competence, equipment and stamina to defeat a small army. Cade is out to leave this antifa group headless. And when his mission is done, antifa will never know who swooped in to inflict this pain. But the word will get around.

John M. Vermillion was a field soldier for more than 20 years. After military service, he worked internationally in various civilian capacities for the next 12 years. Following is a synopsis of "Flathead County", the sequel to "Blue Gunder".

Blue Gunder was a top NFL draft pick and Dallas Cowboy—until a medical matter beyond his control ended his career. Now he’s Sheriff of Flathead County, Montana, married to Dee, the veterinarian behind Blue Skies Veterinary Clinic.
On Halloween night, Blue walks into a scene designed to be remembered: a dead game warden in the northern forest near the Canadian border—three elk arranged in an arrow aimed at the corpse. Hours later, in the far southeast corner of the county, a rancher shows Dee three horses she immediately knows were poisoned.
Two incidents, connected, but how? And they’re only the beginning. As the cruelty spreads and the messages sharpen, Blue and Dee are forced to ask who in Flathead County benefits from fear—especially now that a mega-wealthy newcomer has arrived, buying influence as easily as land. And when Blue unearths a rare earth bombshell, the Feds intervene.

Awful Reckoning by John M Vermillion
Book starts out with dedication page and preface about the theme of the book.
Special thanks and love the tribute to Leonard Cohen. Love his lyrics and music, so sad he's no longer with us and he left his music for us to enjoy.
List of other works with dates by the author and a list of characters so you won't be lost during the book.
Prologue is about the code the two who had served together use to summon help. Will's daughter had been taken and they pretty much know by who.
The team is assembled with NO detail forgotten.
Lots of travel, keeping safe, and so many small things that fall into place that they notice and lead them to other decisions in their movements.
So much action and mystery that are solved over time. Alternating chapters so you hear what's going on with the kidnappers holding Julie for ransom and at the same time you learn of where the team is with not only their background investigation but assembling the team, what they will need and where they will meet and who will team up with another.
Like how the teams change depending on what attributes the team need to accomplish their goal. Everything runs like clockwork with them.
Terrifying to learn of Juie's captivitty and how one insubordinate is shot in front of her and she's forced to scrub the floor of all traces of DNA or the female leader will do the same to her.
Julie is smart and uses her body when she and just one other are left in the house. When she's able to she uses her knowledge: she knows what to look out for, stays hidden on the side of the road and follows as the cars leave so she knows which way to head to a city.
Being able to fight off a mean dog, wow she's got skills for sure and uses what she has on her to bandage herself.
Have read a bit about Antifa and I get chills because as the author states from the very start the US could be up against more then they've dealt with over the years with just this one group.
They are all highly trained and smart. Such a fascinating book the way the author tells his story. Can't wait to read more of his works.
Author has a way with his words that make the scenes visible to me due to the detailed descriptions. I sit on the edge of my seat and then have to pause for an hour to digest what I've read.
Ends with about the author and his other works.
Received this review copy from the publisher and this is my honest opinion.

This was a gripping story overall. There were plenty of edge-of-your-seat moments that make you not want to put the book down once you start. I enjoyed being able to see the story from both sides - those trying to rescue Julie, and those who have taken her. There were some shocking moments, and this is definitely not for the faint of heart. Overall, I thought this had great writing. So why the four stars? It’s completely unrealistic that Antifa would ever do something like this. It seems like the author has heard too much conservative propaganda. With a more believable adversary this would easily be five stars.

‘Every action I describe has been done, and done successfully’ – truth in fantasy form!

Author John M. Vermillion has experienced a rich military life – West Point graduate (along with degrees from the School of Advanced Military Studies and the National War College), Infantry Colonel in the US Army, followed by working in Airborne and Ranger programs in Germany, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Croatia, Bosnia, and Iraq. He has become honored for his writing skills, having completed nine volumes of his popular Simon Pack series, then introducing a new character – Cade Chase – in ROCKLEDGE, and now opening a new series – CADE CHASE AND SIMON PACK novels, of which AWFUL RECKONING is Book 1.

John addresses the reader with a Preface, stating ’This is a tough book. It was tough for me to write because I am opposed to vigilantism. It will be tough for some readers who cannot accept the proposition that Cade Chase is capable of leading a team that carries out the violent acts described in this novel. Maybe those readers are correct. But I urge the reader to take this as a cautionary tale. This kind of thing will happen if at all levels of American government there is tacit acceptance of lawbreaking, and no real standard of justice universally applied…’ Forewarned, stepping into his book is an adventure!

After generously offering a cast of characters list to keep the reader focused, John opens his new episode with a prologue set in Rockledge, an Appalachian town: ‘Now what? Cade Chase signed out of the military after what they claimed was a long and distinguished career. He didn’t look at it that way even one day during his service. He wasn’t a West Pointer, someone expected to rise all the way to the top, four stars…He didn’t like terrorists who seemed to be growing stronger by the month…Throughout America’s history the brave had stepped forward to defend liberty, and he wanted to be among them…’ The focus of this story is set.

John provides a condensation of his plot as follows – ‘In the heart of Silicon Valley, antifa kidnaps a Stanford student, the daughter of Wil Chambers, a man of exceptional wealth. But the word will get around.’

Skilled writing that places the reader comfortably in the story, this book is not only a fine action tale, but it also is a portrait of a man driven to make life better in the face of social injustices. A great story. A fine philosophical stance.

Awful Reckoning: A Cade Chase and Simon Pack Novel by John M. Vermillion showcases the author's extensive talents. Cade Chase is a great character, this book being a continuation of his life while taking on the case of a missing young woman, Julie Chambers. Antifa has apparently kidnapped her, and Cade is on the case. Cade Chase himself is so well characterized, the author offering a well-thought-out overview of Cade and how he has developed over time. You learn about his inner workings and thought processes. He becomes a real person in this book with many challenges and dilemmas. There's also a helpful list of characters at the beginning of the book that proves to be highly useful. The writing itself is fast-paced, with alternating chapters that serve to move the story along well. You start to see both sides, this being an effective mechanism. While the author warns the reader beforehand of vigilantism, there's a finely drawn line in Awful Reckoning, one that poses a powerful question of whether or not it's okay to take the law into your own hands. Highly recommend it for a great read.

Awful Reckoning is book one of the Cade Chase and Simon Pack series, and starts with a tough undertaking for Cade. The kidnapping case is going to be a real challenge but the toughest threat for Case will be grappling with his emotions of what’s right and what’s wrong morally.

This crime-action adventure novel kept me turning the pages and on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. The plot was compelling and suspenseful and was driven along with tight dialogue and high-octane action from the outset.
The diverse characters and the place descriptions are vivid and seemed true-to-life. Certainly they were easy to picture as each scene unfolded. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves a great edge-of-the-seat adventure thriller!

I really enjoyed Awful Reckoning. I found it to be an easy to follow, twisty intense crime thriller, but what lifts this above many in the genre are the wonderfully entertaining characters. Author John M Vermillion has a great talent for bringing his characters to life, giving them depth, meaning and a strong bond. Each character develops further levels of complexity and interest as the story unfolds, and I found myself relating to them and forging a bond of your own.

I highly recommend Awful Reckoning to anyone who likes fast-paced action and great storytelling. Another brilliant addition to the Simon Pack series.

John M. Vermillion gives us another Cade Chase novel. And this time he’s helping find a missing woman who has been taken by antifa. This is s a thriller full of military antics so if you enjoy this kind of trope, then look no more.

In this book we get to read about Cade Chase and know more about his character, his way of thinking and acting in this kind of situations, he is looking to get justice out of every situation and of course he’s the hero in the story.

Awful Reckoning by John M. Vermillion combines two of his main characters from previous novels to complete a major mission. Cade Chase is in the little town of Rockledge, Virginia, when a close friend from LSU, Wil Chambers, contacts him for his help. Cade teams up with Simon Pack to rescue Julie from the Antifa terrorist who kidnapped her. What appeared as a random act soon proves to be a targeted attack on Julie's father. Cade and his team see to Julie but find the domestic terrorist attacks on our country are funded and run by whom? Can they save Julie and take down the leaders to end these attacks?

I found John M Vermillion delivers another amazing novel that will keep you glued to the pages. The team Cade Chase works within Awful Reckoning is professional. The takedown of the terrorist attacks was creative. I highly recommend this novel for action and adventure.

Author John Vermillion’s Awful Reckoning was a very enjoyable read. A kidnapping initiates the action, but I bet this is like no abduction story you've ever read.

The synopsis reads 'Although this grisly tale begins with the kidnapping of Julie Chambers, it quickly morphs into something that veers far off the standard kidnap script.
Cade’s tiny hand-picked squad has the courage, competence, equipment and stamina to defeat a small army. Cade is out to leave this antifa group headless. And when his mission is done, antifa will never know who swooped in to inflict this pain. But the word will get around.'

I found Awful Reckoning to contain great writing, and the book was well paced. This was a fabulously entertaining book with a diverse cast of well-developed characters that kept me guessing at who would survive. Another fabulous novel from one of my newest favourite authors.

Cade Chase is back with another mission, this time to help his friend whose college-age daughter was kidnapped by antifa.
This is a military style thriller, and if you enjoy the intrigue of military thrillers you would enjoy this. There is a lot about tactical operations as Cade and his team try to recover the young woman.
In my opinion, this could be improved by tightening up the narrative, and laying off the heavy-handed political commentary. This is very heavily slanted in that direction, which didn’t appeal to me at all.
I also think that the ending seemed a bit abrupt.
Again, for those who enjoy military thrillers with vigilante justice, this is perfect for you.

The book started off slow and it took some time for me to conceptualize what the storyline was but when it came together, I was intrigued. Julie was an ordinary University student who was kidnapped by a rogue group called Antifa. Antifa was considered to be a group of “professional soldiers in a domestic terrorist organization.” Four kidnappers held her captive in a barn in the middle of nowhere. The leader ‘Four’ as she wanted herself to be called, had no moral compass, she was calculating and cold-blooded, a truly ruthless killer. The ordeal Julie endured was extreme and the author’s description of the events made the story alive and vivid.
After Four murders one of the members of her team shoots him point-blank to his head, Julie knew she was in danger and had to find a way to escape. When the opportunity presented itself, she feigns interest in her kidnapper and the promise of sex to make him feel she was interested. This aspect of the story highlighted Julie's bravery and courage, she escapes narrowly after she uses a knife and deals several stabs to his back and neck. While he is incapacitated, she makes her escape. The journey to freedom came with its own set of obstacles and trials. This adds to the building climax of the story.
Without revealing any major spoilers, I will say the book is a great read. After Julie makes contact with her father and thinks she is safe and it’s all over, I was surprised by the events that unfold in the second half of the book. The author does not disappoint. The FBI and local police assume a turf-feud to take credit for the rescue but in the background, there’s a professional extraction team working swiftly and tirelessly to return Julie to her anxious parents Wil and Marty. The story is far from over as the extraction team works to uncover the key members of Antifa.
After Julie was reunited with her parents the story continues as Cade and his team uncovers the members of Antifa and those involved in Julie’s kidnapping and ransom demand.
I would recommend this book

Wow… this is truly an addictive book. I've just finished reading it and I feel like I’m in trance. It’s such a nerve-racking plot that I completely lost track of time and of where I was. Especially Julie’s character is fascinating to me. She is strong, fearless, efficient and just very capable to handle any situation. The experience she had to go through is clearly terrifying. The scenario of the Antifa wrecking the country and kidnapping people is not something one dares to think about too much, but this book is just written in such an excellent style that even though the storyline doesn’t represent a pleasant experience, it will leave you impressed and stunned. It’s enough to say that when I started the book, I was very tired and falling asleep, but by the second page I was wide awake and by the end I was just ecstatic. Definitely wouldn’t recommend reading it before going to bed ;) haha. But in any other situation I highly encourage anyone who likes a little spice in their books to read this! It will not disappoint you.

Awful Reckoning: A Cade Chase and Simon Novel by John M. Vermillion is an action-packed adventure with varied layers and an incredible storyline. Julie Chambers is a girl who has everything set in life, she goes to Stanford and has a routine she follows. Julie's life turns upside down when she is kidnapped and her father Wil Chambers set his resources to work to bring back his daughter by any means. Wil involves Cade Chase who assembles a team who will make Antifa extremist regret their kidnapping scheme. A fast-paced story with never a dull moment, one of the best thrillers of recent times.

The author has given the readers an opportunity through this book to think beyond matters of mundane life into a philosophical sphere. The characters are in superb cohesion with each other that gives the story a balance of thrill and action. With good dose of action and the challenging decisions between good and bad, friendship and morality, this book has kept me plastered till the end. I highly recommend this book for a refreshing adventurous storyline.

It’s not very often that adventure novels make one think, but with Awful Reckoning: A Cade Chase and Simon Pack novel, author John M. Vermillion simultaneously masters adventure and philosophy.
Following the gripping adventure of the celebrated and genius Cade as he races to rescue Julie, the daughter of his old friend who has been kidnapped by Antifa, the book forces one to think and look at both sides of one of the fastest growing groups in the US.
The book keeps you on your seat and is truly a blood pumping adventure. The mental and emotional stress of Cade throughout feels palpable and really pushes the impact of the storyline.
Overall, a great read; lovers of adventure and complex storylines alike will certainly find something to enjoy in the novel.

"Awful Reckoning: A Cade Chase and Simon Pack Novel" is the first book of the series. John M. Vermillion, the author, kept me many hours on the hook with this intriguing story. The book tells the story of Cade Chase, a retired soldier from the USA military, who decides to help a wealthy old friend track down his daughter, Julie, from the hands of Antifa.

Personally, I find this book intriguing and enjoyable. Is a well-written story, told from different sides, which gives perspective and leaves you thinking about right and wrong. I give it four stars because I prefer a book when it starts at the beginning and does not present the characters before chapter one, like in this case.

Definitely recommended!

I was certainly on the edge while reading Awful Reckoning by John M. Vermillion. This book took me out of my comfort zone but not in a bad way as I found myself getting glued to the story chapter by chapter. I love how the story was built slowly, making the reader anticipate what's about to happen. It was like watching a suspense movie. The writing style of the author is also good. I was admiring the dialogues between the characters and in general, how the story wrapped up in the end. You can tell that this is the forte genre of the author.
