Lies…
It’s 1976, and Britain is in the grip of an unbearable heatwave when conman Bowen flees London to return to his hometown, hoping for a fresh start … but things don’t always go according to plan.

Secrets…
For young loner, Jay Ellis finding a briefcase full of cash seems the answer to all his prayers, as does the magnetic pull of the stranger, Nash, who rolls into town shortly after.

Betrayal…
Veteran conman Nash is hot on Bowen’s trail to find the money stolen from him. All he has is a hunch and a newspaper clipping of the boy who witnessed his partner’s death. Their fates become entwined, but in a world of violent drifters and treacherous thieves, a man’s conscience can become his weakness.

A compelling, poignant and dark thriller, rich with atmosphere, for fans of small-town crime and rural noir.

After young protagonist Jay finds a briefcase filled with money near his working-class neighborhood in the town of Holywell, Wales during a suffocating heatwave in the summer of 1976, the discovery triggers the clashing expectations of the adults around him when they learn of his peculiar stroke of luck. Noir pro Math Bird once again transports his readers into the historic but forgotten borderlands of northeastern Wales where the residents of his stories grapple with the ever-present liminal space of their lives, poised between boundary and threshold: hope and despair, good intentions and criminality, growth and decay. A gripping read!
