A Haunting Love: A Retelling of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir

Rate this book
Love breaks all the rules. Even those of the afterlife.

Adele Monroe, recently widowed, loves her new home by the sea. At least, until the overbearing, cantankerous spirit of the home’s former owner, a sea captain, makes himself known. The two must set a course for peaceful cohabitation, and Adele soon finds herself caring deeply for the unseen mariner. But how long can she carry on this association before the demands of the living force her to choose between life as she knows it and something far more mysterious?

A retelling of R.A. Dick’s timeless classic, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, this work draws inspiration from both the original novel and subsequent screen adaptations to provide a new twist on the theme of paranormal love.

Mrs. Monroe in place of Mrs. Muir

This was a retelling of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, and in some ways I liked it better. I won’t tell you the simple differences, other than to say that Mrs. Monroe is a little less ditsy than Mrs. Muir. Not to say that she is always wise, but definitely thinks with a clearer head than Lucy Muir.

It was a clean romance and was well told.

I loved the film “The Ghost and Mrs Muir” so was apprehensive about this retelling. However, I need not have been worried this was a beautifully written love story. This telling is about Adele and Captain Daniels and there are some intriguing twists away from the original but nothing can take away from the timeless story. If you like historical romances with a paranormal twist this is definitely for you.

Seemed like a cute story, and the Ghost and Mrs. Muir is such a classic.

But I’m baffled by all the glowing reviews, because the story had a LOT more weak points than strong points, and not to mention the atrocious mistakes that were on almost, quite literally, every page. This author has no idea how to properly format a sentence that includes dialogue with the appropriate use of word capitalization and correct use of punctuation. And even worse, she wasn’t even consistent in her mistakes. It really was all over the place.

Other irritations:

-Using the word “effect” instead of the correct “affect,” oh my GOD.

-Some words that ought to have been capitalized were not, and vice versa (for example, the word “ladies” was once randomly capitalized in the middle of a sentence, but the FMC speaking to her MIL and calling her “mother” as a name was not).

-I truly cannot express enough the horrible use of punctuation in this book. It was distractingly bad.

-Bad sentence structure throughout. There were so many run-on sentences broken up with commas when a period or a semicolon would have been grammatically correct. Nineteenth century French novelists are
collectively spinning in their graves due to this author’s inability to correctly punctuate a long sentence.

-The prose was admittedly lovely at times, but there was nothing to break up lines and lines of straight up dialogue, and it made it feel dull and monotonous to read.

-One random character mistake that was wild to me: over the course of about two paragraphs, some random background woman transformed from someone’s aunt to their mother

Honestly, after writing this review, I’m wondering if my initial instinct to award this slog with two stars is too generous? I usually only reserve one star reviews for books that I hated so much that I was forced to DNF them (and I DID finish this one), but this weak-ass book really has me reconsidering my rating system.

ETA: decided to succumb to my Divine Wrath and just award this book with one measly star, despite having finished it. It really just wasn’t good.

A bit wordy

I loved it except for two things.. the beginning of the story is a near mirror image of the story that inspired it. I might not have noticed had i not recently finished R.A. Dick's book only a week prior. Seemed like a waste of time with very little originality until the "love interest" appeared(not the ghost, but the cad who tempted her away)
And even that was very nearly identical with the exception of some new characters and careers.

The second thing was it being incredibly wordy. The author would have a better story if she had taken a machete to the thickets of unnecessary prose.
I do enjoy everything about my unmedicated ADD, it has helped me in many areas of multitasking and hyper focused studies but this was incredibly challenging!
Reading is one of the things i do best, AND
I understand it's meant to sound more or less "turn of the century", but... i frequently read turn of the century books - the real thing, not our versions. Jack London, D.H. Lawrence, Jules Verne, journals, history books etc. and they still managed to keep the flow of words trim and elegant enough to not only catch our attention but also hold onto it.
All the flowery fluff is better suited to actual dialog between characters not as the framework for the entire story. This author managed to achieve the exact opposite! There wasn't nearly enough time spent on the characters talking at length. This would have been far more entertaining.

Either way, it's actually a decent enough tale to satisfy the itch you get after reading the Ghost and Mrs. Muir, or watching the film. The ending would have been satisfying if... again... she had spent more time writing about how the characters achieved their goal! Instead of doing this she bloody well ignored it!
It was overwhelmingly inflated where it shouldn't have been and neglected where it needed the most attention. It will be difficult to want to read anything else by this author.
I'm sorry but you are simply going to have to scrap this version and start all over!
(I'm being facetious of course)
As much as I'm complaining ... it's better than the majority of what passes for supernatural romance... so I'll gladly return those two stars to my rating.

Excessively long-winded, unnecessary plotline of the widow being committed to a psychiatric facility. Couldn't get into it. Also took a long time to establish what era it was. I had high hopes but this fell very short.

The classic movie - which I adore to an unhealthy degree - was based on a novel, and, frankly, this retelling really doesn't add much for me. The changes didn't make sense and the opportunity to build an emotional arc between Captain Daniels and Adele was squandered. It was a disappointment.

A Hauntingly Beautiful Story About Love

What a delightful retelling of a classic story! The original move from 1947 is one of my favorite old black and whites, so I was intrigued when the author’s newsletter announced this upcoming book. I had always wondered how the story might be changed a bit because, like any true romantic, I wanted to see the Captain and Mrs Muir have a real HEA during her lifetime. Ms Harris fulfilled my hope beautifully. She maintained the crusty, overbearing Captain, while Adele had just the right amount of spunk to break through the rigid walls his anger over his death built around his heart. All of the characters’ interactions are so very real, while the expectations for women during that time period are clearly detailed, adding to the angst and drama of the stormy. Then there are several new twists in the plot that expound on the ‘other worldly experience’ of death and reincarnation that cause severe problems for Adele and, ultimately, force the Captain to leave. This leaves the reader to speculate on how things could possibly turn around for the better. That turn around is subtly and beautifully done and keeps the reader reading to get the full picture by the end. This story incorporates desire for freedom, unscrupulous characters, terrifying situations, the desire to protect and humorous dialogue to weave an incredible love story that leaves the reader with a smile and a sigh. The added notes by the author on the various changes to the story and their relation to the time period were extremely enlightening and helped solidify the story. I look forward to reading more of Ms Harris’ books.

A Beautiful Love Story . . .

Adele Monroe recently became a widow and stands at her husband’s grave for some quiet moments from the in-laws she currently is dependent upon. They had heavy expectations for long mourning periods, even though Adele is still young at 33. The wind buffeted her and the heavy black clothing and veil made it difficult to breathe as she walked to town. She stepped into an alcove to catch her breath and read Alderman & Son Realty and she looked at the pictures through the window of homes for sale. As the realtor mumbled prices, she knew she could not afford it, until one was exceptionally low and the home was furnished. Then she asked what was wrong with the home. Coral Cottage was the one she might afford to rent, but the realtor was very reluctant to show her until she threatened to go to another realtor.

She finally compelled the realtor to take her to Coral Cottage where they quickly discovered the reason he didn’t want her to stay there. It was most definitely haunted by the overbearing, cantankerous spirit of the former owner, Captain Gregory Daniels. But this is what she can afford, and she won’t allow the Captain to force her away. There is something about him, and Adele finds herself caring deeply for the unseen man. But how long can this relationship go on?

This has always been a favorite story of mine and I liked how the author presented it. The banter between Captain Gregory Daniels and Adele is wonderful and the reader gets caught up in their closeness, fearing it can’t last. Will she be broken-hearted as she falls in love with a ghost? Or will love find a way to join their souls?

Emilee Harris's novel A Haunting Love: A Retelling of the Ghost and Mrs. Muir focuses on the recent widow Adele Monroe. Adele and her two children are living with her mother-in-law. Adele is an intriguing character who doesn't let a ghost prevent her from gaining the independence she craves. She moves into a cottage by the sea despite the argumentative Captain Daniels's ghost living there. She is a metaphor for fortitude and determination. She is almost focused to a fault on achieving her goals while experiencing grief and meeting a ghost. I am reminded of Scarlett O'Hare from Gone with the Wind.
Adele becomes employed by the mayor's wife as a secretary. It is while working that she meets Dr. Harris. After spending some time together, Dr. Harris professes his love to her. Adele continues to form a relationship with Dr. Harris despite the ghost of Captain Daniels warning her about him. Warnings that prove to have validity.
When Adele's mother-in-law observes Adele talking while no one is in the room, she advises her to seek professional help and provides a reference. Adele's children move back to the mother-in-law's home until Adele can prove she is mentally healthy. Consequently, Adele goes to an appointment with Dr. Garrison who prescribes that she stay at the asylum to recover. Adele urges the ghost of Captain Daniels to leave her alone, and he complies.
While this story is a satisfying read, I found the beginning interactions between Adele and Captain Daniels's ghost jarring. It was a harsh and stilted turn that pulled me away from the author's mesmerizing writing style.

I couldn't wait to read this book. I fall in love with the Movie when I was a teenager then watch every episode of the TV show and was so sad when it ended. Emilee has taken both the movie and TV series and rewritten then so the telling is even better.
Adele Monroe is a widow after ten years of marriage that was just ok, she has two wonderful children that keep her going. Her late husband was a cold uncaring person. With little money and no other choice, she and the kids are living/staying at her mother in laws house. She needs to find a new place for her peace of mind and to start over. The cheapest place on the market is Coral Cottage a lovely place right on the shore. She knows when she first sees it that this is the place she is meant to be.
Only problem is the former owner is still there. Captain Daniels hunts the place and chases everyone off. He is argumentative, rude, loud and protective too. What these two have to get thru, learn and overcome is wonderful. This is a love story of never-ending love. I was so happy this wonderful tale finally gets a happy ending. Not what you would expect but perfect for this revised vision.
There are new twist and turns and surprises but anyone who loved the movie and Series can't miss this new story. You will laugh, cry and shout for joy. Once you start reading you will not be able to stop till the end. Enjoy I sure did and know I will pull it out and reread again and again.
I received and ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it.

A Haunting Love is the story of Adele, a young widow trying to find a way to raise her children independently without the constant interference and second guessing of her mother-in-law. She finds a home underpriced for the market because it is reputed to be haunted. However, she finds much more, since Adele quickly begins to develop a relationship with the irascible sea captain who built and now haunts the home. Emilee Harris uses this plot as a vehicle to explore the possibility of the true blending and mating of souls where nothing is hidden or withheld. I found her descriptive imagery imaginative. Also, there is built in frustration since Adele is still present in the physical world with children to raise and the need to make a living, whereas Captain Daniels is not, although he can offer advice and knowledge otherwise unavailable to Adele. The book is certainly thought provoking. I thank the author for an advance review copy via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

I found this book discounted via Bargainbooksy; this is my honest review.
-Lovely paranormal romance with a hint of mystery and suspense.
-I'm not sure how Adele didn't catch the weird way Mr. Harris was speaking to her; it put up my hackles like a cat sensing of danger.
-It was too close to the original story, which is why I took one star off.
-Editing: There are many places where a capital letter shows up right in the middle of a sentence (for ex. can’t imagine You, any He stormed). Twice a whole sentence is repeated within 2-3 pages. A few confusions between verb and adverb (for ex. were/where). I had to laugh at this: "on a string of something perfectly round and smooth. “Pearls?”" Real pearls are not perfectly round - fake ones are.

Such a beautiful re-telling.
I loved the movie The Ghost and Mrs. Muir but never had the chance to read the book. This re-telling of the classic tale was beautifully done and a pure joy to read. When Adele first saw Coral Cottage she knew this was going to be her new home. True the realtor gave her some problems and right from the start there was a pesky ghost but that is what made this tale so good. The portrait, the pearls were written into the piece in a splendid manner. I highly recommend this book it is an outstanding love story. I did receive a free copy of this book from Booksprout and voluntarily chose to review it.

Super cute book with some not-so-great facts of history thrown in (looking at you, “locking women in asylums because I don’t agree with them wanting to have a job other than being a mom”). It was cute and I liked the ending!

Honestly, it took me until the last 25%to connect with this book in any sort of emotional way. It felt a little stilted and I wish that it had been fleshed out more instead of skipping over emotional bits.

Although I received an ARC of this book from the author, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Wow! I can’t remember the original The Ghost and Mrs. Muir story, but this one will capture your attention, open your mind and engage your heart. There is the Captain’s snarky commentary; an unscrupulous con-man; an interfering mother-in-law; a terrifying hospitalization and a most wonderful ending. I absolutely loved it!

I really enjoyed this gentle love story. I barely remember the TV show back in the 70s, but I always like a good romance. The only thing I didn't like was when Adele was forced to go to an asylum by her in-laws. That seemed unnecessary to me. Also a bit strange was that Adele's two children, a boy and a girl, were given no lines in the book, or even first names. But I did enjoy Adele's conversations with the ghost of Captain Daniels. I loved the happy ending.

Good story

The Ghost and Mrs. Muir is one of my favorite movies. I wasn't sure if I'd like reading a story based on the movie but I was pleasantly surprised with how good this tale started out. I enjoyed the byplay between the hero and heroine and the story progressed well up to a point. I got confused when it veered off into complicated concepts of space and time. Could have been better.

A Gameful Adaptation

Emilee Harris provides a nice adaptation of the classic romance, The Ghost and Mrs Muir.

All the important plot points of the original are met here, with the captain not being visible. It was fun seeing how a HEA could be achieved. I have not read the original novelization.

The manuscript was a bit wordy and in need of an edit. There were missing or misplaced quotation marks & missing words here and there.

Loved it

This story was well written and beautiful. It was so descriptive, I could see each chapter unfold, like a scene in a movie. The interactions between the main characters were haunting and poignant. I love that there are physical manifestations of the ghost that are perceived by the female lead, even though she doesn't really see him. Truly worth reading.

I loved the 1947 movie and then the 1968 tv series. I always thought the original ending was kind of a HEA cheat, after all the Captain disappears from her life and they don't get together until after she passes away from old age. So when I saw that this was a retelling I had hope for a better ending and it was fabulous! It was everything I could have wished for, thank you so much Emilee.

I've been a fan of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir since I was a teen, so I bought & eagerly read this retelling of the story in the same day. As much as I love the original, I love the ending of this so much better. The author has every reason to be proud of this work.
