Cindergorilla loves to dance. She longs to go to the Saturday Night Disco Ball, where the other gorillas strut their stuff, but her horrid aunt and cousins, Gertrude and Grace always say no. Instead Cindergorilla must stay home and do the housework!
But all that changes when Cinder gets a visit from her Hairy Godmother . . .
The second hilarious title in a fun-filled fairytale series with empowering messages for young readers!
Gareth first started writing when he was very young but it wasn’t until he was in his early twenties that he completed his first novel. Having had it universally rejected he wrote a novel for children called Who Killed Charlie Twig, which received an equally unimpressed reception and remains rightly unpublished to this day.
Some years passed during which Gareth met his future wife, Lisa and began a career in TV, working on shows such as The Big Breakfast and Richard & Judy. Then one day he found himself having lunch at the offices of Bloomsbury. He mentioned the unpublished book to a nice lady called Sarah, who politely suggested that he should send in the first three chapters for her to look at (and most likely dismiss, she thought to herself). Gareth returned home and excitedly told his wife this news, who gently explained that the book he had written actually wasn’t very good, but reminded him that he had recently begun work on a much better idea. This turned out to be good advice. In 2007 Bloomsbury published the first of four books in the series The Dragon Detective Agency and have since published The Thornthwaite Inheritance, Space Crime Conspiracy and The Considine Curse. He has also written a shorter story, Perry’s 5, published by Barrington Stoke and a series of books called Ninja Meerkats, published by Stripes.
Gareth now divides his time between writing books, producing TV programmes, spending time with his wife and son, Herbie and playing the slightly ludicrous number of stringed instruments in his front room.
NOMINATIONS & AWARDS
The Dragon Detective Agency: The Case of the Missing Cats was shortlisted for the Waterstone’s Book Prize. The Thornthwaite Inheritance was shortlisted for eleven local book awards and won seven of them. The Considine Curse was voted Blue Peter Book of the Year 2012.
Cindergorilla had to clean up the mess her aunt and cousins made every day. She didn’t mind though as she got to dance whilst she cleaned.
One day she heard about a disco which Travis, Prince of the Disco was holding to find himself a new disco partner. Cindergorilla wasn’t that interested in being Travis’s partner but she did want to go to the disco so that she could show off her dance moves.
But with all the mess made by her aunt and cousins that she has to clean up, will she get to attend?
As you will have guessed, Cindergorilla is a fun children’s picture book that is a new adaptation of Cinderella, this time featuring a wonderful gorilla called Cinder.
The story is one that most children will have heard over and over and yet never like this. It really is an amusing take on the tale, and also shows children that they are not there to serve others and that they don’t need anyone else to have a good time.
From cover to cover the book is illustrated with bright, colourful, full-page, amazing illustrations that capture the eye and bring the story to life.
This is a book I can see children enjoying immensely. It is touching and hilarious. Another fabulous book in this new fairytale series from author Gareth P. Jones.
Cinder makes you romp to her tune. Cinder works very hard every day at home to clean her aunt's and cousin's mess. But she does it happily while practising her dance moves. Then, one day she overhears her cousins' conversations about a disco competition by the disco king, Travis, where the winner gets to be his dance partner. She wanted to go not to win but to show off her moves. That's not easy. She had a truckload of mess to clean at home. What's next? Yup, you guessed the story right. We typically read a book because we spotted it in a library, bookstore, or someone recommended it. But, we came across Cindergorilla because someone forwarded a youtube link to a song that accompanied this book. It was peppy and fun. So, we read the book after watching the video. We are not big fairytale fans, but this book, a Cinderella's retelling, is worth reading. Of course, we all know the story, but this book stands out for its illustrations - bright and beautiful. The story is about self-confidence, patience and perseverance leading to victory. Kids will definitely enjoy this book as a bedtime read with positive affirmations. This book, which is loosely based on the classic fairy tale, Cinderella, creates a fun book for kids. I can see the book being used for a comparison lesson along with Cinderella and other books along the lines of this storyline. I like how Cinder's family (Aunt Linda, Gertrude, and Grace) learn to be kinder to Cinder and clean up their own messes! Two thumbs up for this book!
