Leo e io siamo stati tante cose. Siamo stati rivali, compagni di scuola e di squadra. Amici.
This book is part of a series and all of the characters are a huge part of this book. I have not read the other books and so I am overwhelmed. There’s too much going on and I skimmed the book to read about the main characters. If the book was solely about them I could finish this but there is so much I am lost about. The writing is good but I don’t read much m/f so I don’t think I’d read the rest of the series. No rating since I didn’t fully read the entire book.
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review. I wanted to like this one I really did. I love the “it’s always been you” trope. And Silas and Leo have some sweet moments. But….it’s painfully repetitive and it starts making less and less sense as it goes on. It starts with them being apart because Leo broke Silas’ heart and married someone else. Now Leo is divorced and back in town. After some charged interactions you learn they’ve always wanted to be together and they try to have a relationship. But they get together and break apart countless times in this book and it’s kind of ridiculous. I think 2 stars is pretty generous all things considered.
Parent’s guide: Sex & Nudity: moderate (multiple open door sex scenes, oral and anal sex, frotting) Violence & Gore: mild Profanity: mild (a couple f***) Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking: mild-moderate (major location is a bar) Frightening & Intense Scenes: mild
While this book is a standalone book, I recommend reading it in context of the rest of the series. It works without the context of the series, but it makes more sense if you know the characters and setting (there are a few things that are referenced that don’t appear in this book).
I like Leo and Silas. Their past romance and how it ended leads to a strong tension between the two. They have to regain trust and learn what it would take to be a couple. I like their history and that it takes them time and communication to get together. They figure out together what a relationship would look like and what it would take to make it successful. I like that they really take time to resolve their relationship, and deal with issues that come from breach of trust. I also like the people from the town and how they are all so supportive and helpful to everyone. I also loved Leo’s ex-wife, I just wish her character was given more of a plot than just pushing Leo’s forward (even if it was from his perspective).
My biggest issue with this book is that I don’t love the soulmate theory. Both Leo and Silas have this belief that they cannot love anyone else the way they love each other. Which is fine, but not really my thing. In my opinion Leo reads graysexual/grayromantic but neither of them really seems interested in taking the time to explore that. They both have a mentality that they will just be sad and pine forever if this doesn’t work out. It was also frustrating that Leo pins the failure of his marriage on Silas, since he was still in love with him so he couldn’t love his wife. That’s a lot to put on any relationship. And nobody really addresses how bad that is.
The premise had potential, but the execution was a complete miss for me. I know this is a continuation of a series, but I felt like the side characters took up too much of the plot. There were often so many characters in one scene that it was hard to keep up with who was speaking. On top of that, while I appreciate the strong themes of family helping each other, it felt like the rest of the cast were the ones pushing forward the plot more than the main characters and it absolutely should've been the other way around. I really wanted to cheer Leo and Silas on because I enjoy second chance stories, but this was dragged out (definitely did not need to be 500+ pages) and I didn't have fun with their dynamic.
I'm not sure if it's due to language differences (the book is translated from Italian), but I felt the writing and dialogue was very awkward and at times clunky. There was a lot of inner monologue in both POVs, and some of it was really nice and even emotionally meaningful. But other times it just seemed like I was missing vital information. I can appreciate not wanting to share the whole story of what happened to these guys immediately, but it added to the confusion. I think the book would've benefitted from having some flashbacks to their past early on too so we got some sense of what they used to be because I wasn't too sold on the second chance for a long while.
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book for free via NetGalley, but am leaving my honest review. Many thanks to the author for the opportunity!
A second chance romance in the small town of Connemara where everyone knows each other and everyone else's business, this was such a cute yet angsty read. I enjoyed the range in emotions that made it to the page as well as the camaraderie between all the side characters. I especially enjoyed how Silas and Leo eventually come together even though they had become estranged throughout the years.
Silas endeared himself to me immediately, but seeing Leo dealing with the aftermath of the decisions he made and the direction his life went knowing what he really wanted out of life--especially who he wanted--made my heart go out to him too. I could clearly see how deeply connected and emotionally tied they were, even when apart.
Although this is the fifth book in the series, it would help to have read the previous books since this is a very tight-knit group of friends and family and some of their stories are touched upon in this book. I've only read the first two and felt a bit lost in the beginning, but I understood that they're all a found family of sorts and that they all added something to the story somehow. Thankfully, as the story progressed there was more of Silas and Leo's story--more of their development, their engaging interactions and their superb chemistry.
I would definitely recommend this story to anyone who enjoys an angsty character driven story.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this book.
This is the story of Silas and Leo, who both hail from a very small town where everybody is very involved in each other’s lives. They had a relationship when they were young that fell apart and Leo moved away. He’s back now and their attraction has rekindled.
It is my fault for not realising this was part of a series before I requested it. That’s relevant mainly for the side characters: there were many and it was easy for me to get confused by them. That’s on me.
As far as the premise and the MCs: the premise was intriguing and the main characters engaging. The first half of the book was ok, even with the secondary character confusion on my part.
But the second half was a slog. The dialogue and conversations between the MCs became very repetitive. Encounter—similar dialogue—no resolution. Repeat. The story felt like it stalled.
Overall I liked the MCs in the first half and was pleasantly confused by the secondary characters. The second half did not live up to the premise for me and felt like it could have used more editing and expansion of the characters. I considered a DnF but I was far enough into it I pushed through.
A beautiful love story, beautifuly written. However, I had some problems with it. First, the context of the sex scenes seemed to me more of an escape route for the author to not develop more the characters. The sex scenes themselves were super crude and badly written. Second, the way the story was going, I think that just one of the sex scenes that are in the book was necessary. Third, the idea of a woman talking and writing about gay sex, and so poorly written made me feel a little uncomfortable. But in general, the whole context of the book, of being a story of finding yourself, being happy with who you are and who you love, and accepting that without expectations, it was a fantastic story. There were amazing moments in the book, that I am not going to write down, to not give any spoilers, but it is worth the reading. But if I could give some advice about it, it would be to cut some of the sex scenes, cause they make the story stop, and I think it would become more fluid if there weren't as many as that were.
*I received an ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thanks for the free book*
I did not know that this was a sequel when I started reading it but my rating was not influenced by this as the author makes it very easy to catch up. I just did not like the two main protagonists, I did not like their romance and overall I found that most people seemed more caricatures than people. I really enjoyed the Irish setting (I know Clifden very well), but the novel also did not feel Irish to me in any way, it could've also been set in the States for that matter. While I enjoyed how old wounds could finally heal and how families came together, my dislike for both main characters prevented me from enjoying the read. I also kept mixing the two of them up (don't ask me why!) and thought that they both should work on their communicational skills and maybe go and get therapy. Graphic sex scenes yes, but they were more tasteless than sexy. I don't know. Gay men, what did you think? 2.5 stars
The Wrong Man is an "it's always been you" second-chance romance. This story follows Silas and Leo who grew up in a small town together. Leo broke Silas heart when he decided to leave. When Leo returns to their small town years later, they face the question of "are they meant for each other or not? can they get past the hurt?" Overall, I enjoyed reading their story, but it did feel repetitive, meaning they kept going through the same notions over and over.
However, it was hard for me to get hooked in the story at the beginning. I did not know this was part of a series and although it is a standalone, I was lost. There are many side characters and although the author tries to introduce each one I couldn't keep up with who was who, even at the end of the story.
This story was cute, but I pretty lost half the time having not read the previous books in the series. There are A LOT of characters, and a ton of names and surnames and intricate relationships to remember and keep track of, which I felt definitely hindered my ability to follow and enjoy the story.
The MCs were really sweet and while it had a slow start, I did enjoy the will they/won’t they aspect of their relationship. I was certainly rooting for them.
I was given an ARC by NetGalley and XPresso Book Tours. All opinions are my own.
This is a long, complex story that tends to repeat itself. Other than that, it's an interesting story with fascinating characters. It has a bit of humor, a bit of mystery and a little sadness. I not a fan of Leo, but he is sweet, and he adds some of the best comic relief. Silas is compassionate and easy going, he has a calming effect on everyone. I did enjoy the story, it just could have been a shorter.
Silas and Leo are sweet main characters, and I love the "will they, won't they" trope. As the story progressed I found it difficult at times to keep reading because of how repetitive the pattern of Leo pulling away from Silas.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read an advanced digital copy of this book.
The Wrong Man by AS Kelly was so much more than I hoped!
Readers find themselves immersed in a small town with interconnected families who have lived through hardship and joy. We meet Silas, who has stayed put, warm in the comfort of his many family members, but lacking in the romantic love department. His one true love Leo left years ago after marrying a woman they both know, despite Leo having shared a close relationship with Silas. When Leo returns to town, suddenly single and about to be divorced, Silas remains wary about opening himself up to Leo. He doesn't want to be hurt again.
This book is full of angst. Mind you, it takes a little time to get moving - there's many players to map out in this book. There's a lot of background and in the scheme of things it's all pretty relevant, when all things are said and done. There's much backwards and forwards between Leo and Silas - Leo is unwilling to commit as he believes he's totally the wrong man for Silas, and Silas is clear as clear can be - he wants everything, and is unwilling to settle for anything less. There's plenty of dialogue about being out in a small town, but these two aren't the only gay couple, and the book looks at how the respective couples navigate their individual circumstances. There's conversations about labels, attitudes, and stereotypes, and alot of what would be considered masculine stereotypes who are strong allies of the gay characters in this book. I loved that aspect of this book.
There's other heavy themes in relation to grief and loss, physical disability, parental alienation and fracture in families. There's also plenty of banter, jokes and sarcasm which plays out well - and some hella sexy scenes between our two MCs.
Loved this one, once it got going.
Thanks to the publisher and netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read an advanced digital copy of this book.
Sadly I didn't really like this novel. I couldn't connect to either of the main characters and the plot and story was just... meh. I did finish it but it took a long time and my heart just wasn't in it.
DNF at 50% I really gave this book a try but I just couldn't get into it at all. I couldn't connect to any of the characters and there was far to many that I found it really confusing.
A cute small town romance that has some childhood friends to lovers with a devastating end to now enemies to lovers as adults! Also with some great side characters and found family vibes! Definitely recommend this adorable romance!
i wanted to LOVE this- LGBT small town romance, friend to lovers to kinda-rivals-kinda-just-estranged to lovers again- but it was a bit hard to follow
this is book 5 of a series with all books marketed as able to be read as standalones but i had such a hard time following the complicated relationships of this tiny town without having read the other books
this book follows Silas and Leo in a slow burn dual POV with flashbacks to their high school friendship, the start of their relationship, why they became estranged, and how they rekindled their romance while there were some super cute scenes, and while i was interested and invested enough to finish, i was so lost through most of the book- we don't learn the backstory to almost anything- including the fact that the characters knew each other before they "met" in the first few chapters (like okay obviously we know that from the book summery but still)
overall: cute read, love the story idea, should not be read as a standalone, MM romance, miscommunication is a HUGE HUGE HUGE trope in this book and honestly drove me completely wild most of the time
