Such a fun read! I loved the different stories. It was like portaling from one world to another! It was wonderful to see some characters I was already friends with and get to go on a quick adventure with some new ones.
I've really enjoyed Jeff Wheeler as an author, so I was looking forward to this book of short stories to fill in some extra details from some of his other books, as well as publishing new short stories of his. Alas, I didn't really find the short stories all that satisfying. Most didn't really capture my attention that well. The ancient Rome based story was a bit too dark for me (and probably would have gone over better if I had read the series it was adding to). The space story with the alien couple was kind of weird and didn't have enough action (the weirdness made more sense when the author's note explained the challenge the short story based upon). I did like the Beesinger story a lot, and the space story towards the end was interesting (though a bit too depressing a premise for me). And of course, The Wishing Lantern is a fun one, with just the right pacing and twist at the end. So there were some good things. It just didn't hold my interest very well overall.
This collection of short stories is a mixed bag. The best stories are early in the book, and they seem to degrade as you reach the end. It was nice, though, to read more about some beloved characters.
I won this book through a goodreads giveaway. I had read most of these stories through previous releases and enjoyed having them all compiled in one spot. The Muirwood/Kingfountain stories were my favorite and I highly recommend for fans of either series.
I would give a rating of 3.5. The stories from Kingfountain and Muirwood were old favorites of mine that actually nudged me to want to begin re-reading those series. The Lost Abbey is one of my absolute favorites. The Beesinger's Daughter was new and I absolutely wished for more of that! The small stories/writing prompts were fun little reads but definitely more suited for a magazine type setting in my opinion. Overall this was a fun read, but left me wanting more which I suppose is a good thing.
From an unconquerable female protagonist to an unflappable FeRzOhG this book is filled with all kinds of sci-fi and fantasy adventure. The author is consistently talented at weaving a tale with believable characters, even outside his usual element.
I had previously read most of these stories in different places, but enjoyed revisiting the unique and varied worlds sampled in this collection.
I’m a big fan of Jeff Wheeler and the narrator Kate Rudd he uses for his books. I am never disappointed with either! I did have a hard time reading the short stories. To occasionally read them is fine but I find I want to continue on with most of them. They are just a taste and a tease to a book for me! I think it the Tales will be enjoyed by many, but my preference is for a full novel versus short stories.
I am a Superfan of Jeff Wheeler 's ever since I discovered the Kingfountain series. Although I have read some of the stories in Deep Magic issues, there were some new to me as well. Loved The Wishing Lantern! There were a couple of Jeff's world's not in this collection. I highly recommend his works!
Like everything Jeff Wheeler has written, I quite enjoyed these stories! I was amazed at how varied they were which showed the endless imagination he has! I recommend this book to anyone who appreciated imagination but doesn't have time to read a full length book. But once you read this one, you'll want more, much more!
I enjoyed reading these short stories - some were from "worlds"/books that I have read before, which gave me more of a background on some of the events alluded to in the books. Other stories were from worlds I haven't encountered before, and were quite good. I particularly enjoyed "Sleepwalkers" and "The Beesinger's Daughter"
I really like this author Jeff Wheeler. This is a bunch of his best little beginnings and endings in to so many of his books. Before I started reading on the very regular basis, I loved short stories, and this is a great collection. Oddly, enough, now I like to read epics and most of Jeff work is epic.
This contained everything to go with Kingfountain, both Muirwoods and Mirrowen except, The Poisoner's Enemy. I purchased it separately. It also contains stories outside those worlds. Great edition to your clean book collection by Jeff Wheeler!
I enjoyed this book because unlike Mr Wheelers other books I didn't lose a lot of sleep on work nights because they are short stories! Definitely recommend !
Many of these short stories are connected to other books or series by Jeff Wheeler; I highly recommend reading those right after reading the books they pair with, I think that would make for a lot better reading, both for the main books, and for the short story.
Though I had read a few of those, the stories were good again. The author is known as a world builder and his stories range from pure fantasy to science-fiction that rivals many established sci-fi icons. Good job
Wheeler’s world-building is always on point… and this book was no exception. To me it’s the perfect blend of History, Fantasy, and a little Romance. A must read
Love them all, they have all good qualities and they all give me understanding of your series which I've read your imagination has given me so much and I thank you dearly.
