*sighs* I got into this universe because of the Crossbreed series. I am forced now to accept that the other characters set in this universe are distressingly misogynistic, male and female alike.
Everything about shifter culture sounds awful. People can shift into one animal form, and they don't have very much control over it. The animal form has its own spirit and personality. It's a big deal about the animal form meeting one's friends and family. Shifters live in "packs." The main characters of this miniseries, Melody and Hope, are constantly in danger of getting raped, because they are single shifter women living without the protection of a pack. Apparently, pack leaders are little authoritarian despots who micromanage shifters' lives.
Shifters are all about racial purity. They want to have shifters of the same type breed together to keep the bloodlines pure, resulting in an "alpha." An alpha tends to be a redheaded man with the ability to make women drop their panties with the sound of his voice, and he literally can make his penis magically grow in girth. This panty-dropping, penis-thickening power is so highly sought after, shifters are always trying to breed an alpha into existence.
... What. The. Fuck.
In this novel, we hear about Hope's business dealings (because she and Melody own a boutique that sells clothing and jewelry, because they're girls). We hear about Hope's romantic entanglements. And we hear about some threats/vandalism Hope is dealing with with her business, and the men she is dating may or may not be suspects in the vandalism.
At least with the last book, Melody got to deal with a serial killer. Although the serial killer subplot felt dwarfed by the rest of the story...
These romances don't have a lot of suspense. Neither Hope nor Melody are competing against any other female love interest. In this novel, Hope went out on a date with at least two men, so there was some possibility of there being a love triangle. But, there wasn't that much drama. It was pretty much insta-love. Again.
Even though every single character in this novel is a shifter, and Dannika Dark claims that nudity is normal among shifters? Characters still talk about how embarrassed they feel to be seen naked, or how aroused they are at seeing someone else naked. It feels very much like the author is trying for light erotica. But, it doesn't make any sense in-universe. No shifter character in these books ever just doesn't care about nudity, even though the author claims that's how they're supposed to feel. And I'm tired of it.
I wouldn't mind the premise of this universe so much if only it weren't so obvious that the author WANTS us to fantasize about this disturbing culture. I could understand starting out a novel with the idea that these two supernatural women are best friends, and living on the outskirts of their society, where they face the threat of being gang-raped by males of their species. That is an interesting, suspenseful premise I could work with. I could understand the author describing how their species is misogynistic, if the author then actually had the female characters trying to fight/change the system. ... That does not happen here.
These female characters are fans of the Patriarchy. While they can be admired for operating outside of a pack, they consistently talk as if their plan is to eventually join a pack in the future. They can be admired for owning their own business, except that their business is the kind that is meant to be non-threatening to men; they just make dresses and purses and jewelry. These characters could be admired for their supernatural powers; except these women have surprisingly little agency when they take their animal forms. The women aren't fighters or whatever. They are essentially women with pet dogs, who might fight on their behalf. Ultimately, both female leads are completely willing to mate themselves to a man, and the author expects us to be pleased that the male leads are handsome/powerful/"alphas."
You would think that in today's society, post-Holocaust, any fantasy world that talks about "racial purity" would be construed as a bad thing. But, here, Dannika Dark has all of Breed culture look down upon crossbreeding in general, and especially so within the shifter community. These female leads are completely willing to pair up with shifter men, especially if those men are "alphas" (because penis-thickening is so important). This demonstrates that the female leads are not rebels at all, but perfectly docile, compliant females in their misogynistic, racist culture; they will fulfill all cultural expectations to shackle themselves to a man, and crank out purebred babies for him.
I will acknowledge that the most recent Crossbreed novel (same universe from same author, but different characters) features a shifter transwoman. There, the author wrote a likable, understandable transwoman who talks about how she and her cishet male mate loved each other despite shifter society's pressure. The author characterized it as the shifter culture not understanding why the two bothered to mate with each other, if no children could result. ... This helps emphasize how shifter culture is also homophobic/transphobic, and believes that no romantic love is worthwhile unless it results in biological children. In that Crossbreed novel, at least you were given the impression that the author was showing likable characters bucking the terrible culture.
In this "Black Arrowhead" series, not so much.
The Crossbreed series is better. At least there we have missions and killing. And hybridization is always cool. But, this rot? It's just some very disturbing gender roles and insta-love, with a backdrop of "racial purity" talk. It's very off putting.
If you are looking for a paper-thin romance with shades of Mein Kampf, boy, have I got a book for you.
Let me start by saying that I really enjoyed this book! I loved seeing a different side to Tak. I loved how reminiscent of the Seven series this was. Though it felt like there was something missing and I can't quite put my finger on it.
Hope was a great character to get to know! She's gone through a not-so-great situation which has caused some ongoing issues in the present. I liked how the author dealt with everything surrounding her. I loved that she wasn't miraculously cured after she met Tak. I liked that she made him work for it to make sure she wasn't just an afterthought to him.
I wasn't expecting to like Tak as much as I did. He can come off as gruff but he's a huge sweetheart deep down. Not everyone sees that side of him so it's even more precious when it finally comes out. I loved how he respected Hope enough to understand the situation and fight for her when needed but also step back when she asked.
The mystery being resolved the way it did was not what I thought was coming! I loved being caught off-guard. It was a just ending to those SOBs. On the other hand, I was expecting what happened at the very very end. Though now I'm curious as to who is going to be next. It's been so long since I read the Seven series that I don't really remember who had kids and how many so this series going forward is going to be one big surprise after another for me.
The Audio Book:
The narration was fantastic as always! I love love love Nicole Poole! Every character had a very distinctive voice and didn't blend with one another.
Dannika dark is one of the few authors I automatically buy without having to read the blurb first. This series just keeps getting better and better. You just can’t go wrong with Dannika dark books. This felt like was back home and knew everyone I loved hope and tak story. It was good funny and action so much love so much honour and respect. So great to see old faces in here. God I missed wheeler..lol Loved this bring on more…
We are back at the shifter boutique, but this time it is Hope’s story. Hope is the jewelry maker. When her brother Lakota Cross, & Melody, along with the rest of their family, travel to set things right amongst both families, Hope offers to stay back and run their new business.
Tak arrives in town to settle things with Lakota and the meet cute/awkward between Hope and Tak had me grinning. When Tak learns the family will leave Hope unattended, he extends his trip to monitor her unbeknownst to everyone else. It’s a good thing too because trouble is brewing.
Dark gave us a delightful romance between a damaged Alpha and a headstrong, insecure female. She also wove a suspenseful story that kept me guessing. Tak’s story will tug at your heartstrings even if you do occasionally want to bop him on the back of the head. Hope is headstrong and considers asking for help a weakness which lands her in trouble. We see growth and healing from both characters.
Someone wants the boutique gone. Another shifter who owns a jewelry store is suspect number one, but he also shows an interest in Hope as a woman. Hope confronts her past as the danger escalates. Fans of the Mageriverse get to see characters from the Seven series. The author delivered an engaging tale that was grounded and kept me guessing.
Dark pulled me in from the romance to the suspenseful story and family drama. I laughed so hard at the interaction between Hope’s Dad the chief, and Tak. I didn’t want the story to end, but finished the audiobook with a smile.
Nicole Poole rocks the Magerivrese! While her female characters often sound the same, I enjoy her male voices and her tone. She nails Dark’s humor and brings her characters to life.
Swoons, laughs, suspense, and tender moments await you in The Alpha. While it is unnecessary to listen to The Vow first, I recommend you begin there. You’ll meet Melody, Lakota, and Tak there, as well as Hope. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer
To clear, this book wasn't bad, I just found it boring. I didn't connect with the characters like I had hoped to and their romance just felt off/unbelievable to me. Nice continuation of the overall story, tho.
I had forgotten how annoying it could be when Hope would go on about her status and how she must maintain her image as the packmaster's daughter. I'm listening to this one and Nicole Poole reads her as very reserved and sedate, which comes across as a bit cold, so when speaking about her image, it comes across as arrogant and a bit pompous. ******************** I think I like the Black Arrowhead more than the original Seven series. In this installment, we follow Hope, who is the daughter of Lorenzo and Ivy Church. Tak, who we met in the previous book, has decided to resolve the friendship up in the air with Hope's brother Lakota, which puts him in Hope's path. I like that although Lakota and Melody live with Hope, the author found a way to get them out of the story so the focus is on Hope and Tak. Now that things are happening, I can't wait to see who will be the next to join the pack.
First off I was REALLY looking forward to this book. The first book in the series (loved it!) has been reread many times as I waited for this book. Really enjoyed Tak from the first book so was eagerly awaiting this. I didn’t get a good sense of Hope’s personality from previous books other than her being really afraid to disappoint her parents and being pretty sheltered. I was hoping she’d be less bland then she’s seemed in the other books. As far as her personality goes…..whelp turns out there wasn’t too much going on there 😑
Pros:
- Tak. He was great I’m so glad we got a book with him. You get a good look into his past and his problems are believable. I will say I actually preferred him in the first book though.
- Hope. Stands up for herself eventually even though that whole backstory was really not great.
-the forced weird love triangle is short lived
Cons:
- Hope: For some reason she really falls flat and I didn’t connect with her at all. Right from the start I just didn’t click with her because, frankly, given her mother’s history from her book in the seven series I had a hard time believing Hope’s past and it was disappointing. It basically felt like a watered down version of her mother’s story. Also she’d go from being completely flat to straight up tossing a drink on someone. She just felt a bit off with no real tangible personality.
- The Plot: It’s pretty uneventful so all you’re really left with is Hope dealing with her past and some light intrigue having to do with her shop. Hope as a character just wasn’t believable or likable enough to carry the rest of it.
- The Pacing Not a lot is going on. One second Hope is drooling over a rich swanky guy then boom she’s with Tak and that’s all she wrote. It felt like a love triangle forced into the story to try and provide some conflict because there’s not a whole lot going on.
To Sum Up:
Tak is lovable but doesn’t come off as well or successfully as he does in the first book. Hope is about as interesting and emotionally compelling as cardboard except for random outbursts of anger. Honestly I just never felt any real believable emotion from her. In my head she was completely monotone if that makes sense? Other than the two’s respective damaged history there’s not much else holding the plot together. The intrigue is just so so. I think Dark was going for the whole two broken halves make a whole type thing but when you don’t buy one of the characters pasts it kinda makes the entire thing fall apart.
So unfortunately I’m disappointed and I probably won’t reread this one. I’ll just be rereading the first book again until book 3 comes out. 😪 I usually can’t put a book down by this author but this one I actually put down and forgot about for a bit.
*I received a free copy of The Alpha. This has in no way influenced my voluntary review which is honest and unbiased.*
I love absolutely everything I have read or listened to by Dannika Dark, and I am happy to say that I had a lot of fun listening to The Alpha. There are multi-layered characters, complex plots, a whole world that's similar to ours but not completely. There is love, there is danger, there is attraction, there is friendship, and more.
I was fully immersed in this fantasy for the duration, and I still feel like I'm somewhat a part of the world Ms Dark has built here.
The narration is awesome, of course, and I can only find positive things to say about the whole package, story, plot, characters, setting - it all worked for me!
I love this Series as much as all the other Series by this Author!
Every time I think this Author could top her last book or previous Series, she makes a liar out of myself! I love the interconnected characters from previous Series, the unexpected crossovers, and how excited you get to meet up with an old friend! As 2 childhood best friends became sisters-in-law or sisters of the heart, you now have 2 best friends become packmates! Lorenzo made me laugh when he ordered his future son in law to use less foul language at him! I think personally he was pleased to have his son of his heart, his step son and his biological daughter together in the same future pack!! I can’t wait to read more books by this Author. Rereading these Series always feels like coming home to a best friends loving embrace. I look forward to many more books and Series by this amazing Author! Thank you very much for sharing your stories with us your devoted fans!
What an amazing listen! The characters are building themselves as the story moves along. We first met and got to know a bit of Tak in The Vow (book 1). He befriends Lakota and when Lakota leaves he is left feeling at odd with him and wants to figure thing out. That brings him into Hope’s orbit. Their first meeting is lovely. As the story moves along I can’t help but love these characters and their values.
We see a lot of shifters from packs we know. Lorenzo and the Cole family members are a joy to see again. Plus the grown up kids. Fun! I can’t help but laugh at how Lorenzo and Tak interact with each other.
I did listen to this gem on audio! Nicole Poole never disappoints!
This was a great story with mystery and action and of course an HEA. Hope was unsure of herself because of past indiscretions. Tak branded himself and lived a solitary life because of bad choices which lead to a tragedy. Seeing the two of them weave a relationship behind their shields was inspiring. Then a past nemesis causes them to break their shields and become one. It was also great seeing some of the others like Wheeler and ofcourse her family ! I think this is my favorite book of the series so far, but I hope that there are many more to come.
I stayed up all night because I couldn't find a place I could stand to pause the story. We are all damaged by life. Some of our wounds show, but the important ones are usually hidden deep inside. The Alpha tells of two people with both external & internal wounds trying to find a place to stand tall in this world. Just like me & you. It is beautifully written & well worth your time.
It started off well. I didn’t finish after the first seduction scene started (38%).
After the heroine tells the hero that her first time was with someone who didn’t respect her and treat her well, he tells her he can show her a good time.
She says she wants to courted.
He says “I’m not going to court you. I’m not worthy... but I can have sex with you... let’s go” (my paraphrasing).
Ewwwww! No longer romantic. At all. Also, what happened to the “I don’t want to go out with a guy who might be an enemy of my brother”!?
Sigh. I loved the beginning. One of the first quotable quotes was that he “was my half brother but my whole heart.” Awwww. Sibling love! Makes me happy!
But then, around the 30% mark, this book starts going downhill. She goes on a date with another guy after refusing the hero, the descriptions get repetitive, and then this whole scene happens.
So sad. I was excited to find a new author. But I can’t take this!
I just adore all of Dannika’s books and this one was everything I wanted and more. I was so stoked for Hope’s story and it was amazing to see her grow into such a strong and powerful woman. I absolutely adore Tak and think he was a perfect mate for her!
Actually a very nice love story. Both Hope and Tag are likeable and sympathetic characters that a reader will easily fall in love with. One of the “villains” was pretty obvious from the start and it ended up being a bit cheesy, but it didn’t diminish the overall enjoyment of reading or the sigh-factor ending at all!
Once again the author produces a winner! Hope and Tak make great characters and are perfect for each other. The struggles they face are what makes them perfect for each other. I’m looking forward to what is ahead of them on their journey.
Another great book, I really really enjoy Dannika’s books. I hope there are more to come in this series and I totally hope we don’t have to wait long as I have listened to all of hers. Love listening to Nicole too, she is so easy to listen to and a great narrator.
yes. yes. yes. I absolutely loved this story. Hope has always had a soft spot in my heart and this was the perfect journey for her. Now to listen to it again. lol.
I adored everything about this book! Reconnecting with the packs always makes me a happy Dannika Dark fan. Cannot wait for the new Installment of this series!
Actual rating is a 3.5 stars. I'm not entirely sure why I didn't feel such a click with this one compared to book 1. I LOVED the first one in this series. Lakota was awesome and Mel was just so lovable. And then when I finished it I knew or rather hoped Tak's story is next as I really enjoyed his character and his dynamic with Mel. Sadly we didn't get to see any of that just some stiffness between the 2 parties. Tak was lovable and great in this book too but I just didn't feel that need to finish and not be able to put it down. I have a feeling Dutch was introduced in this story just simply to introduce him because there wasn't much point to his character otherwise except him popping up randomly however, I wonder if his story is next. Or perhaps the silent and introverted assistant of Hope's that we never met. Who knows but this was an alright read to me.
