Two lovers seek shelter in a storm of jealousy and passion.
Matt arrives in the seaside town of Nyemouth for a much-needed vacation. As a successful lawyer, Matt has a hectic career, and with an ex-husband still pestering him for money, he is long overdue a break. A holiday home perched above the town and its breath-taking harbour seems like the perfect place to unwind. Matt can’t wait to explore the beautiful, jagged shorelines and lose himself for a couple of weeks.
Jake has made a home in Nyemouth. After growing up in the city, living on the coast is everything to him. Running a business with his sister and volunteering on the crew of the local lifeboat, he is exactly where he wants to be. But Jake’s life is far from peaceful. Though he left his domineering husband Vince a year ago, Vince refuses to consent to a divorce or loosen his controlling hold on Jake.
On Matt’s first night in town, he encounters the couple having a blazing row. When Vince turns violent, Matt intervenes and takes Jake inside to escape his angry ex. Despite what happened, Matt feels a powerful attraction to the younger man. Jake is bright, endearing and unbelievably attractive, but the young man’s life is complicated. Matt already has enough problems of his own. He came away looking for an escape, not a starry-eyed distraction. As Matt and Jake get to know each other better, the gamble on a holiday romance becomes hard for either of them to resist. They have both been unlucky in love before. Maybe this time will be different.
Vince will not be shaken off so easily. He has no intention of letting Jake go…ever. As Matt’s and Jake’s emotions deepen, they do not understand how far Vince will take things to keep his husband. As far as Vince is concerned, they made a vow to each other… “till death do us part.”
Reader advisory: This story contains stalking and assault, physical and emotional spousal abuse, attempted murder with a firearm and references to abusive parenting and substance additions.
Thom Collins is the author of the novel Closer by Morning, with Pride Publishing. His love of page turning thrillers began at an early age when his mother caught him reading the latest Jackie Collins book and promptly confiscated it, sparking a life-long love of raunchy novels. His novella Silent Voices will be published by Pride in May, followed by the novel Anthem of the Sea, the first book in the Anthem Trilogy. He has recently finished writing the second book in a series and is making plans for the third. Thom has lived in the North East of England his whole life. He grew up in Northumberland and now lives in County Durham with his husband and two cats. He loves all kinds of genre fiction, especially bonk-busters, thrillers, romance and horror. He is also a cookery book addict with far too many titles cluttering his shelves. When not writing he can be found in the kitchen trying out new recipes. I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.
Thom Collins’ Nyemouth is a quintessential British seaside village populated by an admirably improbable number of handsome and available men. In this book we’re introduced to divorce lawyer Matt and local restaurant owner Jake.
I liked the idea of this story more than the execution. The language is clunky at times and I came to hate the cartoonish villainy of Jake’s ex-husband Vince. He was way too much and the silly caricature that he becomes doesn’t do justice to the emotional trauma he inflicts on Jake. There were moments where Matt and Jake felt real and loveable but too often scenes are overwritten. I wanted to love Jake and Matt more than I felt able to. I love Jake as an LRI volunteer and I really liked his relationship with his sister.
I really wanted to love this book and I kinda hate that the writing didn’t work for me.

Matt takes a two week holiday to Neymount and meets local man, Matt, who is being hassled by his soon to be ex-husband out the front of Matt’s holiday rental. The men are attracted to each other immediately but both are trying to get away from bad relationships and aren’t looking for love. I have to say I enjoyed spending time with Matt and Jake. They are both good, hard working, down to earth guys and their romance was lovely, and a little sweet at times.
Safe Harbour is a good story but it is slow going in the beginning. In the first third or so I thought that was too much tell and not enough show for my liking. Once you get past the halfway point the story picks up. Then the last third of the story was well paced and had a good dose of anxiety producing danger to go with the romance. I certainly turned the pages pretty quickly towards the end, eager to see how our two lovebirds would get through challenges thrown in front of them.
It was lovely to be back in Nyemouth again. I found following Matt on his holiday to Nyemouth relaxing at times and it made me want to go on holiday. One of my favourite things about this story was the town itself. I loved the seaside location and the great local community. It seems like somewhere I’d want to go. I really enjoyed Safe Harbour. It gets 3.5 stars from me.
Safe Harbour is a romantic, edge-of-your-seat story and I enjoyed reading it very much. It’s the second book in the Jagged Shores series but you can read it as a standalone with no problem. I did read book one and loved it, but over a year has passed since then (that means about 400 books ago) so I didn’t really remember the story and it didn’t matter or impact my enjoyment of Safe Harbour.
Matt is taking a vacation from his hectic life as a successful lawyer. He’s looking forward to enjoying his time in Nyemouth and plans to do a lot of hiking and make visits to the surrounding area. He’s not looking for a vacation romance.
Jake has made Nyemouth his home. He runs a café with his sister and volunteers on the crew of a lifeboat. The only thing he has bringing him down is his domineering husband who won’t consent to a divorce.
Jake and Matt meet when Jake’s husband starts a fight near the house where Matt is staying. After helping Jake with a cut on his face they spend a little time talking and Jake invites him to the café for a meal to repay his kindness.
It’s no lie that this book kept me totally engrossed and also had me anxiously awaiting something awful to happen. But much of the story was also about the developing relationship between Matt and Jake. These two guys just clicked with each other in spite of the 13-year age difference. The age difference bothered Matt at first but he soon realized the Jake was wise beyond his years and they shared many good conversations before things move on to a more intimate relationship.
I always enjoy a good romantic suspense story and I loved Safe Harbour. Thom Collins descriptive writing made me want to visit the town of Nyemouth for myself.
Note: I said in my review of book one: it’s refreshing to read a book where no one bats an eye or has any problems with a same-sex couple and this also applies to Safe Harbour.
A copy of this book was provided to me at my request but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.
Safe Harbour is the second book in author Thom Collins’ Jagged Shores series (book one is North Point). Both books are set in the same location, Nyemouth, England, and feature a smattering of common characters, including the two MCs from book one, Dominic and Arnie. The stories also share a common thread in that an MC from each is an active member of the town’s lifeboat team. I liked how Collins includes little references to places, events, and characters from book one without making it feel like Safe Harbour is sharing the spotlight. I thought this approach gave the book a cozy, familiar feeling, while still having fresh characters and new action. In fact, Jake lives in Nyemouth, but is apparently completely absent from the first book because Vince had taken them on vacation in Europe…a tidy way to address that situation.
Oh, I do love this series! The town of Nyemouth seems so idyllic. It’s described well enough that I can picture walking along the storefronts or stopping in to the Lobster Pot for a wonderful meal. The people are so friendly. I love how neither Matt nor Jake care much about fancy things. They’re good, solid, down to earth men. Handsome, too! They seem so well suited for each other. As for the exes, I fell sorry for Clinton. Vince, on the other hand, is easy to hate. Safe Harbour is just as well written as the first book in the series, North Point. The plot is excellent. The characters are so fully fleshed that you feel you’d recognize them if you saw them on the street. There’s just the relight amount of action, both on the water and in the men’s private moments. I really loved it! I’ll reread the series many times over, no doubt about it.

*I received this novel for free in exchange for an honest review*
When Matt books a holiday in the small seaside town of Nyemouth, he does so looking for a break from his city life and his ex-husband. With days filled with trying local cuisine and rural walks, Matt is not expecting much to happen, least of all romance. However, when comes to the aid of local man Jake, who has his own problems with a vindictive and possessive ex, the two find themselves falling for each other. As the two embark on a holiday romance, neither realise just how far Vince will go to prevent Jake from moving on with his life.
Safe Harbour is the second novel in the Jagged Shores series, but as it features different main characters it can easily be read as a standalone. Nyemouth immediately reminded me of all the small towns I holidayed in myself when I was a child, and the nostalgia was most welcome and added to the atmosphere of the novel. A seemingly tranquil and friendly place where everyone knows each other, it also has its dark side, and this is in the form of Jake’s husband Vince. Despite them being separated, Vince is refusing to sign divorce papers and wants Jake back. Their relationship was abusive and now that Jake is free of it, he has no intention of letting that happen.
I really liked both main characters, Jake is a sweet and thoughtful member of the community who runs a local café and volunteers on the lifeboat. Matt is a calm and laid-back man with a tendency for logical thinking that whilst good in his professional life, almost prevented him from pursuing his feelings for Jake. The two characters are very well suited for each other and the chemistry between them is undeniable. The author takes their time with the novel with both the romance and the backdrop of the town. I appreciated all the little details added and again this took me back to memories of past holidays in similar places.
Vince’s behaviour gradually escalates as he sees Jake moving on with his life and the final confrontation is heart-pounding and left me needing to turn each page to find out who survives.
If you like small town romances with big city action, then you will love reading Safe Harbour. I will definitely be checking out book one in the series!
Just perfect Got totally lost in their story Matt has gone on holiday to the seaside town of Nyemouth for a break for the norm. He was looking forward to just relaxing and getting away from everything but on his first night he broke up an argument between two men that change his life forever. Jake couldnt believe that Vince was still arguing over their divorce it had been a year and he still wouldn’t sign the paperwork. Jake knew he would never go back with him it was just a shame Vince didn’t understand that. When Vince followed him and started an argument on the street he was glad when a stranger stepped in and got Vince to walk away. Matt asked Jake to come into the house to give Vince time to cool off. As They started talking over a glass of wine it became obvious that they were both attracted to each other but they had so much going on in their lives That nothing happen. Jake invited Matt to come for lunch or breakfast at his café he owned with his sister as a thank you. As these to spend more time together the attraction is overwhelming and they can’t help but run away with their feelings. Vince was still a problem for Jake and Matt was still having problems with his ex husband of four years that keep pestering him for money but when these two were together nothing else mattered. But could they have a future together?? I really enjoyed this story I really liked Matt and Jake and my emotions took over with the pain that these two had to go through because of their exes. But I was so glad they had each other there for support. But what really got me was their relationship because together they were perfect everything slotted into place but when danger came calling would they both survive it?? I could read about these two forever.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
After reading the first book in the series, I eagerly waited for this one. And I must say Thom has outdone himself.
I loved book one, but Thom has upped the building tension and suspense with Safe Harbour. And kept his strong descriptive writing style.
Matt is taking a holiday away from his job as a lawyer. He wants his holiday to be totally relaxing. So he has chosen the small fishing town of Neymouth on the North East Coast. With plenty of coastal walks and historic places to visit.
Jake lives and works with his sister, after splitting from his controlling husband Vince, who refuses to accept their relationship is over. Jake and his sister run a small café together serving traditional homemade food.
Matt and Jake meet when Matt breaks up an argument between Jake and Vince, outside his holiday cottage. It is instant attraction, but neither make a move, both having too much baggage to add more would be silly.
But their hearts tell them otherwise and eventually they give into their desires.
Of course, Vince adds two and two together and gets 50. Which sets him off on a dangerous path, that continues spiralling.
The three main characters and the secondary characters are so well written. As is the descriptive story world. Thom has a very descriptive writing style. I could smell the fresh fish, feel the wind and rain of the north coast, hear the waves thrash against the rocks. I felt like I lived in the community, and I was part of Jakes group of friends.
As for the slow build up of tension, I found myself shouting “Oh no please do not let happen, what I think is going to happen” a few times, Oh and I was gritting my teeth at Vince and his Obsession to control Jake.
Book 2 in the Jagged Shores series, Safe Harbour introduces two new men into this universe.
Matt, a lawyer visiting Nyemouth for a 2 week holiday to recharge in the sea breeze has plans to explore the countryside on foot. However his plans are thrown slightly askew when he meets Jake.
Jake, co-owner of the local cafe is a local. He’s not looking for love, just for his abusive and controlling soon-to-be ex-husband to sign the divorce papers.
When Matt intervenes on his first night in Nyemouth and saves Jake from one of Vince’s tirades, the two experience an undeniable attraction to each other. In classic romance tropes, they deny their feelings in order to protect the other from their individual messes.
Naturally this doesn’t last for long and they start a summer fling. Vince is ropeable and his jealousy is on show for all to see. Vince will stop at nothing to try and keep Jake under his control. But how far will he go?
Safe Harbour was a bit sweeter than the first book in this series. Matt as a character is all about helping others before himself, and is probably one of the reasons he is infatuated with Jake. Again, the supporting cast of characters here are fun and loveable, especially Jake’s sister Lizzie and her girlfriend, I need them in my life 😅
The spice level dropped a little in this book, but the pacing and clear fall into jealous rage from Vince really kept me on the edge of my seat.
I’m excited to see who we get to meet in the rest of this series
"Safe Harbour" by Thom Collins is the second book in the 'Jagged Shores' series and centers around newcomer Matt Ramsey as he becomes integrated into the society in the town of Nyemouth and invested in the complicated life of Jake, who can't get his abusive husband to accept that their marriage is over.
This contemporary gay romance follows two men who can't find a future together until their past issues have been resolved. I love the small-town connections and the dedication shown by the volunteers who risk their lives to save those who run into trouble out on the tricky waters. The mystery and the danger ramps up even as the men explore what they can be with each other, if only they can free themselves from the burdens dragging them down from the past.
I was invested in the story immediately, and although I could see some of the disasters just waiting to happen, I was anxious to keep turning the page to find out what would happen next, not to mention hungry for seafood after some of those scenes, lol. I think this is a great addition to the series, and although there are cameos by some of the characters from the first book, there is no problem reading this story as a stand-alone tale. I look forward to reading more about the inhabitants of this fascinating town.
This was an exciting story that combines romance and danger as we see Jake in the grip of a domineering husband who would rather see him dead than let him go. Jake is a resident of Nyemouth where he and his sister own a business and he volunteers as part of the local lifeboat crew. He had left Vince a year before, but Vince will not give him a divorce and actively terrorizes him.
Matt is a lawyer who needs a getaway to relax a little. He chooses the the seaside town of Nyemouth where he will reside high above the town with a gorgeous view of the harbor below. On his first night in town, he observes a couple in a nasty argument. One of them becomes violent and Matt intervenes to get Jake away from the situation. Matt and Jake are immediately drawn to each other and, as they become better acquainted, and despite their bad luck with love in the past, they are tempted to give it a try. But Vince will never release Jake and would rather see Jake dead than happy with someone else. Will Matt be able to keep Jake safe? Or are both of them in danger from the obviously unhinged Vince?
This was a very exciting story with well-portrayed characters. The tension mounts as Vince gets more dangerous. Is there any way to stop him before it’s too late?
This is romantic, suspenseful and entertaining. Matt is starting a two week vacation, two weeks away from clients, and two weeks away from his ex-husband's trouble. The first night starts pleasantly enough, but his night takes a turn when he gets back from town to find two men in front of his rental house fighting. He tries to intervene, the man being bullied tells him he's fine. After Matt goes in, it gets louder outside, so he goes to check on things. He has his phone out to record the men, so when the bully hits the other guy, Jake, Matt threatens to call the cops. He invites Jake in to wait until the bully, Jake's husband Vince, is gone. Matt and Jake immediately feel a connection, but Matt is only on vaca, and Jake is still married. They do go out, first as friends, then as lovers, and Vince loses it. And they don't know that they're in danger. This has a great storyline that I enjoyed reading. Matt and Jake are both sweet, funny and cute. I look forward to reading more books by this author. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.
This story has ups and downs and I experienced moments where I was loving it and moments where I skipped whole paragraphs.
I loved both MCs, they are real people and I could totally see them in the real world- especially Jake. So many people spend years not realizing they are in an abusive or toxic relationship, or not being able to escape it. To have both MCs struggling to leave their toxic exes was new and very nice.
I also enjoyed Jake and Matt as a couple, they were adorable and so perfect together. But I feel there was excessive thinking of their exes, from both of them. Anytime they thought about each other, it was always making comparisons to the past - "Vince would never do that", "he never cared about my feelings the way Matt does", and stuff like that- and that was so annoying. It looked like they were still attached to those people, as opposed to being moving on. And like they were only together because they were the opposite from their exes, a refresh from hard days, and not because of who they really are, making it seem that they were together for the wrong reasons.
A holiday romance by the sea. How wonderful – but what happens when you throw in some danger too?
This was a great read from Thom Collins. It is sweet and sexy, with just the right pace to keep the story moving along without it being at breakneck speed. Matt and Jake are brilliant characters and have their own posse of supporting characters to ably assist them. Vince and Clinton are the crazy ex’s, although one is just a tad crazier than the other!
This is book two in the Jagged Shores series but I haven’t read book one and this in no way impacted my enjoyment of this story.
The settings and descriptions are all gorgeous and immediately make me want to visit these fantastic areas of Northumberland. Plus, some of the food descriptions made my mouth water!
A wonderful summer read that is both lighthearted and has a touch of danger. I thoroughly enjoyed every word and have no hesitation in recommending it.
I am loving this little town. This story is a very emotional story though! Jake is trying to divorce his controlling husband Vince and Matt is a very successful Lawyer in town to get away. He also has an Ex that is still trying to get money from him. Matt steps in when Vince is violently attacking Jake. Then begins a slow burn romance as these two both try to work through past relationships. Things are very tough for Jake because Vince will not let go. This story contained a lot of Protectiveness, Jealousy and Passion all over and I love these in a story! The landscapes and the characters are vividly described and we get both of their POV so we can experience all their emotions! This story has some age gap and size difference tropes too! I received an ARC of this book and I recommend for those who enjoy a very realistic slow burn journey of hope and love! Hoping for more stories in this series!
This book offers an engrossing blend of romance and suspense: attorney Matt's vacation takes a turn when he encounters a young man being assaulted by his ex. That young man, Jake, quickly becomes his local guide and love interest. Although both are acutely conscious of their obstacles: there's a significant age gap, Matt isn't local, Jake's ex is clearly unhinged and unwilling to let Jake go (see, the suspense side of the plot). I liked watching Matt and Jake fall for each other, and the author's decision to give readers insight into Vincent's sinister machinations definitely added tension to the narrative: Matt and Jake might be enjoying their seemingly idyllic happiness, but we know that Vince doesn't plan to let it last long. There's some drama, but it all ends with a satisfying happily-ever-after, and all in all, it's well worth a read.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
When your forever drops in your lap. Matt, lawyer takes a much needed vacation in Nyemouth. He is dealing with job stress and ex husband conflict stress. Jake, has relocated to Nyemouth and runs a business with his sister. He is stalked by his aggressively domineering ex husband, Vince who refuses to sign the divorce papers. On Matt's first night, he encounters Jake and Vince arguing and offers Jake protection. How does Vince take this? Will Vince escalate? How well does Jake know Vince? Will the men repair their damaged souls? Do they have the patience to deal with the turbulence exes kick up? Good story. Solid. The town is described as the type of town many would like to settle in and find absolute peace. Matt and Jake sound like wonderful men who fit like a glove. The author provides a blend of good descriptions, believable characters and spicy conflicts. Well done! I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I was given a free copy of Safe Harbour in return for an honest review. I really liked this story. It was an easy read and I became very invested in the Matt and Jake and their story. Matt is a successful lawyer and, although divorced, is being pestered for money by his ex-husband. Jake, too, is married but wants to divorce his domineering husband. Matt comes to Nyemouth for a well deserved break and there is instant attraction when he meets local Jake. There are hurdles to overcome though before the romance is able to develop. I loved the setting and I wanted to keep reading. I would be happy to read more books by Thom Collins. Safe Harbour is book 2 in the Jagged Shores series but can be read as a standalone.
This is quite the story. All the way through I had an idea where it was heading just not how it would get there. Usually I’m bored when this happens, yet there is something about this story that held my interest from the beginning. Two characters with ex’s who are planning on not getting involved. Yet, when these two meet there is an instant attraction. Both characters are loveable. As the author describes their past relationship and current headache’s, I came to like the characters more. I wanted them to figure it out. I love when an author creates a story and location that make me want to keep reading and this author does that.
Nyemouth sounds like a gorgeous place to visit or live and the author's descriptions bring it fully to life. For Matt, it was to be a retreat where he could try to forget about a gold digging ex. When he steps in to protect Jake one night, however, his vacation suddenly gets way more complicated. As their relationship deepens in a way I really enjoyed (age gap, protector, and hurt/comfort tropes are favorites) we get a good suspense plot thanks to Jake's deranged ex. Time to grab the first one in this series and hope it's as good as this one. I'm delighted to find a new author who does m/m romantic suspense well.
I adored getting to know Matt and Jake! Jake steps in when Matt’s ex is being an abusive jerk. They have an immediate attraction to one another. The first half of the story seemed to drag a bit but once you get past that it moves along a lot better. Overall, I really enjoyed the story! I’m voluntarily leaving a review form an advanced copy that I received. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions.
I really liked the premise of this story, and the fact that it's staged in a British seaside town, I grew up in one. Matt and Jake work well together, although they're very different. I enjoyed the suspense element, although it did venture into facial territory on occasion. Vince was somewhat cliched as a villain. The writing's a little stilted in some areas, but on the whole, quite an enjoyable read. 3.5 stars.
Part 2 of a series in a beautiful location, with two lovely MCs and interesting plots with some suspenseful moments. The two exes were at times definitely a bit too much, always in the picture even when not present, especially Vince. Logical with the situation Jake was in, but I would have liked to have learnt more about Jake himself and not just Jake as the suffering ex. The ending was excellent, wrapping everything up in a very satisfying way.
The second book in the Jagged Shores series a well written M/M story that kept me turning pages. Matt a lawyer moves to the seaside town of Nyemouth and meets Jake a lifeboat crew member, their story has suspense, drama, danger, a villain, and romance. I enjoyed reading. I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Jake is going through a bad divorce. His husband is fighting it. Matt has been divorced for four years. This vacation he wants alone time but when he meets Jake that all changes. The more he gets to know him the more he wants but some one doesn't want them together. I really enjoyed this book.
3.5/4* I like the easy reading style of writing, and the North East setting. Jake and Matt - attracted from the start, both dealing with problematic ex husbands - though Clinton is self destructive as opposed to Jake’s ex, Vince who is a psychopath! Enjoyed
The Jagged Shores series just gets better and better with each read. Thom once again combined the love of the characters with the love of the setting the story takes place. I can’t wait to read the next installment.
Cool book. Thom Collins is a new author to me. Safe Harbour was enjoyable to read, I loved the dynamics between the main characters. I was glad to see Jake and Matt get their happy ending.
This is the second book in the Jagged Shores series and I liked it even more than the first. I loved the storyline and the characters were wonderful. I can't wait for the next book.
