What would you sacrifice for the person you loved, the one person who could never know how much you loved them? A gritty, action-packed thriller of family tragedy, unquenchable vengeance and unwavering loyalty.
Jamie Stevens and Mel Lal were best friends at Melbourne’s Parkville University. More than that, they were family. But in October of 2008, something changed. Mel became anxious, secretive and distant. And then Jamie’s life was turned upside down when Mel Lal disappeared.
Five years later, Mel resurfaces. She’s been subjected to a nightmare that Jamie could not imagine, and Mel’s only wish upon stumbling into Jamie again, is to protect the gentle writer from him: a ruthless and vindictive arms dealer hell bent on holding Mel accountable for sins not her own.
Mel’s feelings for Jamie have not faded with time, but Mel can never reveal the truth of them. To do so would put a target on Jamie’s back. The chance reunion, however, sets in motion a series of events that spiral out of Mel’s control, and it seems that after five years of running, the nightmare is only just beginning. If Mel can’t stop Amir Hashim, all of her sacrifice to keep Jamie safe from him… will have been for naught.

Sharp F/F romance that leaves no corner of the human emotions unexplored, from sweet tenderness to spiteful cowardice.
Already from the blurb, a reader can expect the book 'Cicatrice: New Eyes and Brave' by Jo Boyle to be more of a thriller than a typical romance, evolving around two women. The book borrows the best elements of both genres to create a believable story about love, friendship, near-death adventures, and the long path of healing. The stakes for the main protagonist are high: for five years, Malavika Lal didn't allow herself to feel anything or get attached to anybody. Her past haunts her, figuratively and literally. Everything changes when she meets her former roommate and best friend, Jamie Stevens. Malavika finds herself in a precarious situation: on the one hand, she has to protect Jamie at all costs; on the other, Jamie wants to help Malavika overcome any difficulties together. Jamie is already in a relationship with Suzanne Peterson, a wealthy, ambitious, arrogant gallery owner. And Suzanne shares the past with the business co-owner, Gabrielle. In the mix of four women, Malavika adds a criminal club-owner who was a friend of her missing brother.
Jo Boyle portrays her characters with outstanding depth, beyond average jealousy and trust issues. Malavika and Jamie represent two opposite sides of womanhood, and the sharp contrast makes the dynamics between them almost palpable. Sexual assault, violence, and his brother's betrayal turned Malavika, who before the trauma was a doer, into a mighty warrior, protective of the people she cares about - and even of people, she despises. She builds walls around her heart so that she judges everybody, except for Jamie, as deceitful and prone to brutality. On the other hand, Jamie is a soft yet resilient power of all-encompassing compassion and forgiveness. The characters first start the complicated process of self-healing and then rediscovery themselves in each other. In the end, after many bumps and failed attempts, their respective features blend into one balanced, stable relationship.
The book has sensitive content, like graphic (yet radiant) sex scenes and scenes of sexual assault and violence. Thus, it is not suitable for minors and people with mental health issues.
I highly recommend the book to the lovers of an elaborate inter-genre novel. For amateur writers, it can become a handbook of describing romantic feelings without vulgarity. The core - human emotions in all their richness and complexity - makes the time spent with the book worth every minute.
I received an advance review copy through Reedsy Discovery, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I just finished Cicatrice by Jo Boyle. Brilliantly written.
A strong story of love and pain. I was both mesmerized and horrified by some of the descriptions. There is violence in this story and it can get dark at times, but it brings you back to a world I would want to be part of.
The characters were rich and three dimensional. Boyle lets you feel Mel’s pain, her revenge, her anguish, rage, purpose, guilt and sacrifice. Jamie’s sweet nature and courage, at times, balances Mel’s trapped emotions. I felt it all!!
I also love their relationship. Me’ls willingness to do whatever it takes to ensure Jamie stays safe. Jamie’s devotion to Mel is beautiful and heartwarming. Towards the end I became so attached to Mel and Jamie I did not want it to end, I slowed down, so I could stay with them as long as possible, but then I couldn’t put it down and I finished it at 4am in the morning.
Jo Boyle uses such lush imagery and description in detailing out this plot that I could’t help but thinking I was physically watching a film.
This book is definetely not romantic fluff, it has a complex interesting plot with characters you will grow to love.
This is the perfect book for someone who loves heart-thumping action and edge-of-your-seat suspense. From the first page, Boyle sets readers up for a real high octane ride through two continents, five years and one friendship that’s more loyal and dear than anyone could anticipate. Mel’s story is a harrowing tale that will leave readers captivated.
Cicatrice is guided by a friend ship and love shared by Mel and Jamie, but the story’s central focus is piloted by the mystery of Mel’s brother. The plot is intense and riveting and the love story softens the raw, discomforing scenes.
This is the author’s first book, and it’s affected a bit by her learning curve. However, it is still an impressive first book. It’s long and heavy in detail and flashbacks, but the reader never feels lost or confused. Boyle clearly lays out her story and the timeline makes sense. Be forewarned: there is a lot of violence, and it is unsettling. However, it is not without purpose.
As I mentioned, this is a long book. There is a lot of angst, and at times it’s almost overwhelming for the reader. Readers definitely want Mel and Jamie to mend the damage done by their long separation and unite. The miscommunication and the constant push-pull between them almost becomes too much to bear, though. It was a real relief when they finally got together; I just wish the tension and release was a better balanced.
The wrap-up…
If you like nonstop, emotional roller coasters, then jump on board with this one. Boyle’s narrative has a lot of punch and impact. The writing is nerve-wrackingly intense and the scenes are engrossing. It is an unforgettable journey into the heart of darkness, but the light that shines through at the end is worth it.
This novel is a blend of thriller, suspense, intrigue, action, and slow-burn romance. The main characters are exquisitely developed. The author does an incredible job conveying the complex PTSD world that Mel is experiencing after her torment and abuse by her sadistic captor, Amir.
Jaime is Mel's best friend from college and was left heartbroken when Mel vanished after their blossoming relationship over 5 years before. Mel has returned, but like a hunted animal, continues to be gripped by fear at Amir's relentless search to find her and wreak vengeance for a crime she did not commit. Through it all, Jaime's friendship, tenderness, compassion, and love have never waned, nor has Mel's commitment and love to protect Jaime from becoming embroiled in Mel's current situation.
The story is so complex and woven like a tapestry, unfolding clue after clue until the story climaxes in fast-paced action. This novel is not for the faint of heart, and honestly, is difficult material to read given the explicit details of sadism, brutality, rape, betrayal, violence, and vengeance. Yet, there are also beautiful scenes of healing, self-sacrifice, love-making, and resolution.
It takes a bit of getting used to the rhythm of the author's insertion of flashbacks within the current story--whether in the form of intrusive thoughts and voices from abusive scenes during Mel's captivity and her subsequent escape, or recalling earlier memories from times past. While this may make the timeline a bit hard to follow, the constant foray of Mel's traumatic episodic memories are very much in keeping with complex PTSD and the way it can grip survivors in the here and now.
Jo Boyle is a gifted writer and has done an outstanding job with this novel.
This is an exceptionally well written thriller in which the villain, Amir, pursues Mel aka Vika aka Malavika Lal, an Australian born in India from a Hindu family, seeking to discover the whereabouts of her brother so he can have vengeance for the murder of his family in the aftermath of the riotous destruction of a mosque. The first half of the book is set in Melbourne as Mel, traumatised after having been held captive by Amir, renews the friendship of Jamie (who is in a lesbian partnership with Suzanne) after a five year interlude. This half is mostly about trust, betrayals and perceived betrayals, and will-she-won't-she as their relationship develops. The second half is more straight thriller.
This is really not the sort of book I usually read but I was mightily impressed. I know nothing about fighting but the 'blow-by-blow' meticulous descriptions of fights were really well written. I know even less about girl-on-girl sex but these moments were also excellently described. In this sort of escapist literature it is difficult (at least for me) to suspend disbelief but the grounding of the characters at the start of the book in relatively normal settings and the beautiful descriptions (as mentioned) and the great dialogue all added to the verisimilitude. Even though the time-shifting in the first part of the book was slightly disruptive of the narrative, I really appreciated the PTSD flashbacks: they seemed very real to me and made the character of Mel significantly more three-dimensional than she might otherwise have been.
There were times when I thought the book was a little bit too long. There were perhaps too many tiffs between Mel and Jamie in the first part, and right at the end there was too much concern to tie up every loose end. But fundamentally this is a superbly written book and fans of this genre should thoroughly enjoy it.
Author, Jo Boyle, uses these hard-edged emotions to craft a complex action/thriller story that takes the reader back and forth through five twisting years of the lives of Mel and Jamie. The writing is clear and beautiful as she reveals the secrets of the past that drive the emotions of her story.
Hatred chases Mel through back alleys, seedy bars, and parking garages. It is armed with knives, guns, and bombs. She has become so accustomed to it, she looks for it everywhere - and finds it always lurking.
Anger drives her to seek out ways to end the unquenchable hatred, but she needs answers. She is forced to bargain with shady people for information. But, is it a way out, or a trap?
Finally, there is love. Quietly waiting. Hoping. Often denied, but refusing to leave. Is it the greatest of the three?
This action/thriller novel is fast-paced and full of surprises and complex characters. This is one of the best books I've read this year. HIGHLY recommended!
Jo Boyle's debut novel, Cicatrice: New Eyes and Brave is an eclectic mix of F/F love story, and action thriller. The dialogue is razor-sharp, and the characters are complex. The book is a tour de force exploring love, loss, family responsibility, revenge, and impossible choices. An engaging read from beginning to end. I'm eagerly awaiting the sequel.
This book is not for the faint-hearted. But it is harrowing and uplifting in equal measure. “Cicatrice: New Eyes and Brave” by Jo Boyle is the kind of book that won’t leave any reader indifferent. And is there a better prerequisite for a great story?
This book is about love and hatred, two opposite orbs of human essence. What love makes strong, hate tries to destroy. Sometimes it works. What outcome does destiny have in store for Mel who’s gotten tangled in the net of family, religious, and criminal intrigues?
We meet Mel when she is on the run. She is a hunter and prey. She is resilient and weak. It seems there is armour around both her body and her heart. Still, that armour has soft spots Mel is trying hard to seal.
Jamie is Mel’s weakness. But she is also the source of her strength. Mel’s love for Jamie has helped her to endure unimaginable hardships. And that’s the part of the book I found challenging to read. Mel gets caught in the middle of an ugly revenge mission. Her physical and emotional reserves get tested to the limits far beyond even the toughest men’s endurance. There are scenes of shocking violence and abuse that are integral to the plot, but it doesn’t make it easier to read them.
I found fascinating the way the author leads the reader through Mel’s journey, masterfully steering us into understanding how what is supposed to be a weakness turned out to be Mel’s greatest strength.
“Cicatrice” is also a beautiful love story. Two best friends, both strong but vulnerable, have to overcome too many obstacles to be together. And the biggest obstacle is Mel’s belief that her love is a curse for Jamie rather than a blessing.
The author portrays two young women with poignant detail and depth. Mel and Jamie are so different, but at the same time, the connection between them is incredibly strong. And still, the reader inevitably stumbles upon a question: “How far can you go to be with a person you love?” And most importantly, how many sacrifices you can make for love before it becomes too much, so even the most profound feelings can’t outweigh the pain.
The story will take you on a gut-wrenching journey across the dusty roads of India and Pakistan, all the way to the bright and cheerful streets of Melbourne in Australia. Will Mel, sitting in a cosy café, drinking a latte, surrounded by smiling carefree people be able to shake off the dark memories of Alsunduq prison? The place that haunts Mel in her dreams and doesn’t ease its grip even when she is awake.
“Cicatrice: New Eyes and Brave” by Jo Boyle is a read like no other you can find on the endless bookshelves, both digital and physical. Prepare for a wild emotional ride you will not regret!
“Cicatrice: New Eyes and Brave” by Jo Boyle follows the story of Mel Lal, a woman who is both physically and emotionally scarred by her past. She disappeared in 2008, leaving her best friend Jamie Stevens with no idea about what happened to her. When she reappears several years later, she has secrets that she tries to keep from Jamie because they will endanger her. Mel realizes that the feelings she has for Jamie go much deeper than friendship.
Mel is being sought by an arms dealer who had previously held her captive and tortured her. He thinks she withheld information about her brother, but she also wanted answers to those questions that he had for her. Mel’s reappearance puts everyone close to her in danger because of her known enemy and others that would like to have her out of the way. Mel must decide how much she is willing to sacrifice to have Jamie in her life and still resolve the issues from her past.
“Cicatrice: New Eyes and Brave” held me captive from start to finish. The story is fast-paced and full of non-stop action. There are incidents of extreme violence that also include rape. Readers who find this upsetting should be aware of this. This is a gripping, hard-edged tale that will make readers’ hearts pound. The emotional aspects of the story add a great deal of depth. The secondary character reminds the protagonist of who she is at her core. The emotional scars had shut her down and blocked true feelings from reappearing. To stay alive, she must find a balance between her humanity and her ability to be inhumane to her enemies. I found her dilemma to be fascinating.
The intricate plot and vividly described scenes bring this story to life. The characters are well developed and extremely complex. The protagonist’s enemies based much of their desire for revenge on false beliefs. We are given a glimpse into their pasts to understand their motivations, yet I felt they were still evil and beyond redemption. There were plenty of twists and turns that often surprised me. Being caught off guard adds to the suspense!
I initially thought that the term “cicatrice” was a woman’s name. Yet there was no one with this name in the novel. I looked it up and discovered that the term refers to a scar. “Cicatrice” is the perfect title for this novel because the heroine is both emotionally and physically covered by scars. As she heals the issues from her past and resolves her relationship, her wounds will fully be able to heal. The physical scars will remain as a reminder of what she endured.
Readers who enjoy brutally intense, fast-paced psychological thrillers with a bit of romance, will totally enjoy reading “Cicatrice: New Eyes and Brave.
In Cicatrice: New Eyes and Brave, we follow the protagonist, Mel, as she navigates a life of constant evasion, adopting new identities to elude her murky past. Her latest persona brings her into the path of Sienna, stirring doubts about trust and linking her to an enigmatic stalker. Meanwhile, the narrative introduces Amir Hashim, a character driven by an unquenchable thirst for vengeance, his fury setting him on an unrelenting chase.
Mel finds herself pursued by this formidable adversary, determined to make her atone for her alleged transgressions. As she confronts the haunting question of her own guilt or innocence, the plot thickens with her unexpected reunion with Jamie, a childhood confidant. Their reconnection after years apart ignites a series of precarious situations, thrusting both women into jeopardy. Despite the time and experiences that have separated them, Mel's enduring affection for Jamie propels her into a protective fervor. Yet, as dangers escalate, the narrative probes the complexities of their bond and the viability of Mel's solo efforts in shielding her friend from a dangerous arms dealer.
As a devotee of the thriller genre, I was captivated by the depth and dynamism of the storyline. Mel's nuanced character, particularly her concealed yet profound attachment to Jamie, struck a resonant chord. Their relationship, marked by Jamie's tranquil demeanor juxtaposed against Mel's bold and unyielding spirit, evolves intriguingly against the backdrop of their shared perils. The novel's initial time lapses present a challenging yet intriguing puzzle, unraveling into an exhilarating blend of action, romance, and suspense. Rich, immersive descriptions enhance the narrative, making it a remarkable debut for the author.
For enthusiasts of psychological thrillers seeking a story that combines heartfelt connections with relentless action, Cicatrice: New Eyes and Brave promises a memorable journey.
Jamie and Mal were best friends at university, but when Mal abruptly leaves without a word the friendship is seemingly shattered. During the ensuing five years apart, Mal is on the run for her life. No connections can be made or else he might find her and take her captive again. When Mal and Jamie have a chance encounter can she really walk away again, even if she knows it is the only way to keep Jamie safe? I received a paperback copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. This book is amazing. Fast paced, thriller, sex, and plenty of action. If you are of the feign of heart, be warned. I only say this because there is rape and a lot of abuse within these pages as Mal and Jamie go through both their present and past.
We jump back and forth between present day and the past while Mal was a captive. We learn how she was trained and the mindset she quickly adopted. I have to say that I am proud of her for everything she endured, and I am surprised she ever let another man touch her, even for information.
There isn't anything about this book I would change, although the story is a difficult one. I believe everyone got exactly what they deserved at the end and hope you will enjoy this journey as much as I did.
I battled on with this book and feel that the entire angst projected by the main character, I’m sorry… it’s all my fault… I shouldn’t have caused this… was so over the top . It was meaningless as was most of the story. The structure of the telling of the story was annoying and did not work. The violence was silly and not believable. Apart from that the quality of the writing, grammar, descriptive language and editing left a lot to be desired
Jo Boyle is a new-to-me author in what I understand is her debut novel.
I'll admit I don't often read contemporary suspense/thriller novels, but this one intrigued me so I bought it; and, wow, I have to say it had the beautifully written, smooth prose of one of the best books of its category.
The story was visually attractive and seductive with its combination of high-tone, glittery Australian metropolis to the lush, exotic beauty of India.
Main characters Mel and Jamie have a long history which is interwoven throughout the novel. Two females with a deep bond that wants to migrate to a lovers' relationship but is thwarted by events that seem to make it impossible. No spoilers here, not telling if our gals have that happy ending that we find ourselves hoping for.
I enjoyed the authenticity of the friendship between Mel and Jamie. Not sugared up or down, but quite real and it was like watching your real-life friends going through true-to-life emotions...good and bad. But what really intrigued me was the highly fascinating action, the story itself, which was ripe with suspense, long-kept secrets and trauma, high-octane tension (not exaggerating here....pulse quickened many times, and I loved it!).
Like the best of the action/suspense tales, this book had its share of deliciously cool, calculating, bad guys. It share of witch-y female competitors. Its share of danger, the type where you really, really aren't sure just how it's going to end.
THAT...the ending...well, find out for yourself. It will be VERY MUCH worth the ride!
I can only say to this debut author. WELL DONE and I eagerly await more from her!
