I was only 27 and I already felt like my life was over. Then, I fell asleep in statistics class and all hell broke loose.
I've been summoned to a world completely unlike my own. Elves and monster girls roam the streets. Complicating matters, a powerful race of demon called the Vrag have invaded Telos and somehow I've been put in charge of protecting two princesses from all manner of mayhem.
The old Cal couldn't handle this. But, when I stumbled through the dream portal, I became something more.
I'm no longer Cal Newhart, divorced college student and ex-marine. Now I'm the Paladin, a supernatural knight of legend.
It's not going to be easy. But, with most of the male population withered away, someone will have to defeat the Vrag and repopulate Telos. Fortunately, I have two hot young princesses at my side and a female warrior who could make Xena blush.
The characters are completely flat. The interactions are amateurish at best. The story is nonexistent, this is just a collection of random events that happen. Nothing binds this into a narrative. The main character is unbelievable with his backstory, if you said he was a nineteen year old kid of no real import, then I would believe him in the role. This was an idea that forgot to fit in a real story.
It feels more like the sexual adventures of the main character, Cal, summoned to another World, called Telos. The story and action are good enough not to have needed all of the sex. There is little to no character or world development or governance. Cal's dialogues are filled with pop culture references that no one in this other world understands, but the author finds funny to include. The author includes a harem-like retinue in this first volume of the Becoming the Paladin isekai-fantasy (summoned to another world called Telos) series. The first volume has 300 pages, with 23 chapters, although there are chapters of 3-4 pages that are mostly dialogue and a recount of events. Amazon catalogues this series as Dark Fantasy Horror, I did not feel horror or terror aspects in this first volume. This story has 4 volumes so far. Both 3rd and 4th volumes were published on 2022. Story series seems rushed and lacks polish. Story has potential, and main character, Cal is incredibly Over Powered (OP) but main character has yet to explain why or why a regular guy is summoned for such an "impossible" and difficult quest (remove the Vrag, free the Kingdoms of Telos, have a polyamorous relationship with almost every woman that he interacts with). Supposedly most of the male beings in this Telos world have been killed by war and sickness, but the women are really aggressive in this world (while the story is written by a guy).
Nothing terribly new or earth shattering here. Harem obviously. Most of the characters have distinct personalities. And I'll have some useful function other than bed partner. Though the trope is certainly enjoyable but nothing new here that said I did find the reasoning for the mcd's combat abilities To be a little better than other series. The whole summon and summoning thing is still a little vague and not well explained or flushed out I mean if the MC can summon his weapons why can't he summon and AR15. Maybe period specific weapons or ones the paladin spirit has used previously. Unlike some other similar series the MC has not become some OP And instant A$$ hole. There is very little details to the magic But it was hinted that there is some maybe our new paladin will have some magic of his own but not yet at this point Other than so many skills. There is a lot of abilities that seen the author has left on the table or left undefined. Will see if that Gets addressed in later books. I will certainly be reading the second book hopefully it's a little more detailed as the overarching story is fine.
Too many continuity gaps and missing aspects for me to really enjoy this story. I picked this to read hoping to finally get a harem novel that incorporates a Marines ethos, tactics and experiences. Unfortunately none of which are there and worse he allows someone to call the MC a soldier. This could have been a so much better novel with some basic research into life of an active duty Marine and a war veteran instead the author barely mentions it.
If you like swords beautiful damsels fighting demons etc then this should be right up your street, its got a bit of everything a man in another world starting at the bottom a bevy of sexy women fun times fights progressive story etc.
Now you have me hooked where's the next book? Interesting concept with unique characters, definitely a lot of highs and lows to reach a baseball bat to the face. Now I need more story to relieve the pain! How Soon?
A really entertaining adult fantasy adventure story!!! Excellent world building, great adult fantasy activities and interesting characters!!! I for one can't wait to see what comes next!!!
Good story, I like the MC, and the female leads make sense. The latter are still developing, but in a book of this relatively short length there is only room for so much character development. It's set up for a sequel, and if that shows up I'll definitely read it.
Now that is a fun way to travel. Now become a paladin and move forward. Start a harem and be beaten, bruised, and victorious once again. Know the world and learn it all. Bring on the Vrag and all that oppose the light.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It is definitely a page turner. The action is non stop. The story and characters were interesting and engaging. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series. This is worth reading.
None of the characters felt real. At no point did I get lost in the reading and enjoy the story because it was like reading a story written by a 9th grader only with sex. Even the naughty bits were unimaginative. Charging money for this bland novella is straight up robbery. The only reason i gave it 2 stars instead of 1 is because the core concept COULD be a good story if it was written by a better writer.
First time reading this author, the story was decent but it didn’t grab me like I’d wanted it to. I will be putting this one on hold and I will come back to it. There were some technical errors, usually I don’t care but I do like for these things to match up. Our MC is supposed to be a former marine but he keeps mentioning the army, also he’s a pardon my French but ffs they’re magical tank/healers… this guy is a glorified warrior that’s trying to find his role in the party… he’s supposed to be casting spells, being immovable and dropping support magic all the while dishing out that damage while receiving none… but our MC here is barely holding his own. Also if he can conjure up flaming arrows why not flaming armor? Why not flaming swords? Lightning lances? Ice axes? Fire shields? I can continue on here… our MC has zero imagination. It’s like he’s wearing pajamas 90% of the time and then he puts on his armor when he sees a threat. I don’t like that. I know I’m being critical but it’s just how it is. Also henki was bothersome… his true name was constantly being used but he would still not cooperate and that went against the grain. I know I will eventually come back and finish this title… just not now. When I do though I hope it gets much better. Anyways, onward lads!
