It took time for me to finish this volume, yet it was obviously not intended to be a quick read. Based on the author's years of experience in pastoral counseling, the text (in a workbook format) poses questions inviting written answers, and it frequently quotes Bible passages or prompts a side search for them. The volume -- not really at a beginner's level, nor highbrow -- is what I deem to be a contemporary discipleship manual.

A highlight for me: a transcription, at the book's end, of the author's speech at an event held for the sake of victims of violent crimes. I also liked how two chapters opened with themes that were current (Covid-19) and relatable to me (South Texas climate). Two other chapters were notable in their practical applications of Paul's conversion from hostile resistance to faithful service; and Jonah's attempt to flee from his divine call.

My critique, aside from a few typos: I wished Chapter 24 had provided a basic outline tying Tribe/city names to the North/South territorial division of Israel, in the age of the prophet Hosea – mainly for the sake of a Bible novice. Even with a more culturally conservative approach, the text clearly aimed to encourage the reader, showing how Scripture addresses modern, personal snags such as life's worries and dissatisfying pursuits.

I don't read many authors in this genre because most are either overly scholastic or overly condescending. I sincerely appreciate the practical authenticity of Michael Govan's writing style. While the content is deeply challenging, the delivery is invitingly applicable. This book is a must read!
