3.5stars! A dark, interesting and raw storyline. Cliffhanger? hopefully... Still a recommended book!
I enjoyed this a lot but did not appreciate the cliffy ending. Cat Diaz, a Provincetown cop has a not so cute meet cute with returning veteran Sarah when she catches her trying to break into her Aunt Mae's house. Sarah tries to blend back into society following the horrors she endured while overseas.
Lots of angst and a slow burn romance along with some indications that Sarah's life is in danger kept me turning pages. Sadly the book ends with a cliffhanger and no indication there will be another book to bring closure to the Sarah and Cat story.
Really enjoyed this new to me author. Sarah and Cat are interested in each other from their first meeting and we get to watch their relationship develop. We know, and Cat knows, that there are secrets Sarah is keeping and we are eager to find out what they are. When everything comes out, we are deeply invested in these very likeable characters and that makes the suspenseful conclusion even more satisfying.
This was a miss for me. I normally love angst, but I just couldn't get into this one.
There were some interesting elements, but in the end I found it a bit choppy and too much tell, not enough show and some of the situations and dialogue a bit too contrived. The character of Sarah seems to be a jack of all trades/master of all, immediately respected and loved by everyone who crosses her path and her backstory was just a bit too much.
Upshot: Wonderfully written story. Hardship, love and even witty dialogues. It's nicely written that you can basically fly through the book. I thought the characters were described in a way that you can easily relate to them, no matter if you've experienced the exact same hardship or not. Also, I thought that it's not so far from reality, like being sort of a plump, oogly-googly love story. It is realistic in the way that - if one has a certain threshold one can't or won't just willy-nilly get past - Sarah sort of accepts her attraction to Cat right away but doesn't simply give in, because for her own sake and Cat's she knows she has to get rid of her baggage - at east to a good degree - not convinced that that will ever be possible. Cat's persitent though. Like, she needs a good reason to stop pursuing Sarah. And Sarah sure as heck won't be the one deciding that, dammit. Yep, that's Cat for you.
It has a great capacity for the hurt/comfort trope. The plot idea is great, too, and allows for a nice romance and some excitement on the side. But it ends on a cliffhanger, no conclusion in sight and several plot-threats left unattended.
The writing is a little unconventional with a fluent change in perspective, but always third-person. Which leads to some confusion or break of immersion, when suddenly the inner thoughts of other people break the flow.
I read "Finding Sarah" based on Ms. Canniff's first book and I was not disappointed. Sarah is the type of character that the reader can really connect with. Considering these two books, I sincerely hope that Ms. Canniff continues to write and to put out even more excellent books.
Canniff has done it again! They have written a military romance that made me chuckle, ache, and want to hug everyone involved. I have to admit to being partial to military stories that highlight what comes after service and how everyone impacted deals with everyday life. Canniff recognizes that it is not just the soldier who signs up for the military, but their friends and family especially if a deployment is involved.
