The 2022 edition of The New York Times Bestselling Guide.
PLAY BALL! The 27th edition of this industry-leading baseball annual contains all of the important statistics, player predictions and insider-level commentary that readers have come to expect, along with significant improvements to several statistics that were created by, and are exclusive to, Baseball Prospectus, and an expanded focus on international players and teams.
Baseball Prospectus 2022 provides fantasy players and insiders alike with prescient PECOTA projections, which The New York Times called “the überforecast of every player’s performance.”
With more than 50 Baseball Prospectus alumni currently working for major-league baseball teams, nearly every organization has sought the advice of current or former BP analysts, and readers of Baseball Prospectus 2022 will understand why!
Baseball Prospectus is an organization that publishes a website, BaseballProspectus.com, devoted to the sabermetric analysis of baseball. BP has a staff of regular columnists and provides advanced statistics as well as player and team performance projections on the site.
Since 1996 the BP staff has also published a Baseball Prospectus annual as well as several other books devoted to baseball analysis and history.
While there are still some lengthy digressions, most of the team essays actually seem to be analyzing the team as opposed to last year where more than half were about something tangentially related to the team. There are still some clunkers, but the player comments are fantastic this year. A worthy entry in the history of the Annual, after last years' misstep.
Took me a few days to get through the whole thing, but I conquered this beast well in advance of the regular season, which is all I was aiming for (although well after the free agent market settled down). Still, this is always an invaluable resource just for reminding me what the hell happened in the prior season, and for getting my bearings as to where each team might be heading and what the new season might look like.
Obviously, this year's entry was a little more unfinished than they usually are, given the lockout and whatnot, but I appreciated that the remaining Free Agents were given their own section at the back of the book, so I didn't have to remind myself again that Freddie Freeman was no longer on the Braves.
I have every edition of this book going back to the original short-print run that was basically a photocopy. Every year I wait with anticipation for it to arrive. The number of authors has exploded over the years, but the quality of the product has remained very high. There are almost always some minor errors, but this year's book seemed to suffer serious aftereffects of the lost 2020 minor league season. A good number of players who earned significant innings or plate appearances this year are either missing from this volume or received only token treatment at the end of team chapters. This isn't totally the fault of the BP staff, but it did make this year's book a bit less useful through the season.
On the one hand, an excellent look forward to the 2022 season. On the other hand, wildly long with tiny print, so it takes forever to read. Also, they've cut down on the humorous comments, so not as funny as previous editions.
