The Secret Between Them

Rate this book
They share more than a past...

Disabled Marine veteran Kyle Northrup arrives home in Wallis Point Beach. He only wants to begin a new life by inheriting the ice hockey rink his estranged stepfather has left him.

But his stepfather's will has a stipulation. For six months Kyle must partner with his high school crush, Jessica Hughes, the former figure skater whose career he inadvertently ended so many years ago. Working with her will be hard. Especially since his teenage infatuation is now full-blown adult attraction. And the last thing he wants to do is hurt her again.

Jessica has worked hard to put her past behind her. She's a successful physical therapist-no longer that tormented young woman that Kyle once knew. So why does sharing a rink with him bring up unresolved feelings? Could it be she has a crush on him, too?

If anyone can help Kyle heal, it's Jessica. And in saving his dreams, she might just save her own.

Whenever I find a skating book I read it. This was actually not a bad one even though it is a Harlequin romance. It was considerably better than that horrible Diana Palmer thing I read a couple weeks ago. If you can suspend disbelief long enough to get past the ridiculous terms of the stepfather's will, this turns out to be a pretty decent story. The far-fetched scenario brought the two main characters together after their lives had gone in vastly different directions. All part of the stepfather's master plan. Of course it works out in the end. It wasn't hard to figure out how the characters would come up with the money they needed to keep the rink afloat.

Kyle Northrup loves hockey, but his war injury makes it hard to see that his life will get better now that he's inherited part-ownership of his step-father's ice rink. What makes things even harder is his sharing of ownership with Jessica Hughes who, as a teen, was a nationally-ranked figure skater.

Each holds secrets that serve to keep them apart, in spite of their attraction to each other. They must make the rink profitable in six months. Otherwise, it will be sold and the proceeds given to charity. Jessica's fiance wants the rink to fail. He figures the sale of the property to a developer will generate lots of money. But is he the right person for Jessica? She has to figure that out before she can move forward and when she does, what will it mean for her desire to help Kyle--both with his war injury and the ice rink?

How these characters slowly begin to resolve both their troubled pasts and their present is an homage to hope for the present and the future.

Cathryn Parry has a knack for writing interesting, sympathetic heroines, and she employs that skill again in this Wallis Point book. Jessica Hughes is a former competitive figure skater with a secret to protect. She and Kyle Northrup are forced to spend time together by the terms of his stepfather’s will which leaves the skating rink that figured prominently in both their lives to them jointly. The situation is complicated by Kyle’s guilt over his part in destroying Jessica’s career.

I’m not a fan of the will as plot device in contemporary romance, but nevertheless, this is a solid read, not just a second chance at love story but also a second chance at a full life. An appearance by Natalie Kimball, the remarkable heroine of The Long Way Home, is a plus.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book.

I enjoyed reading The Secret Between Them, by Cathryn Parry. In this book, Kyle and Jessica inherit co-ownership of the dilapidated ice rink in Wallis Point, New Hampshire. They both have memories of Kyle's step-father's rink. Jessica used it to practice for competitions, and Kyle worked there. As the title suggests, Kyle and Jessica have a past. The question now is, will they be able to work together to make the rink profitable as stipulated in the will? Jessica doesn't know that ex-Marine- Kyle has returned with a below-the-knee-left-leg amputation. Kyle doesn't know that as a physical therapist Jessica is used to seeing amputated limbs. Parry's writing made it easy to "feel" what her characters were feeling. This book was very entertaining from start to finish!

The Secret Between Them by Cathryn Parry is a great story about two people who inherit a skating rink and need to work together to make it profitable. They have a past and some secrets between them (thus the title). I really love this author's work. She makes sure to get you inside her character's heads and feel what they feel. Her stories are always well told, nicely written and flow smoothly from start to finish. She has a sweet way of writing and the heat level in this one is fairly low. It fits the plot though and I don't think it would have worked any other way here. This was one of those stories that you wanted to go on and on.
