Silenced: Detective Harry Miller, Book 1

Rate this book
It starts with a murder.

It becomes an international crisis and brings the U.S. to the verge of war.

And Harry Miller is caught in the middle. He wants a quiet life. But he swore to protect the innocent.

When a girl is found dead on the streets of early 1970s Miami, Detective Harry Miller is stripped from his quiet corner of the world and called upon to investigate. The people close to the victim aren’t talking. Harry quickly learns why. Signs point to a killer he hunted years ago: ruthless weapons smuggler and underworld kingpin, Hector Navarro.

Harry discovers the Soviets are funneling cash to the Navarro crime ring in order to covertly develop a mysterious new weapon in Cuba. His only option is to dust off his arsenal of high-tech gadgets, hop in his ‘67 Dodge Dart, and track this group of killers to the source. But Navarro and his handlers, corrupt politicians, and prying federal agents stand in his path.

Harry has chased this enemy before and failed. That failure still haunts him, almost as much as the ghosts of his mother and sister. Because of everyone he’s lost and seen die, Harry has sworn to never kill--not even in self-defense.

He cannot let Navarro slip through his fingers again. This time, failure means the end of everything.

Fans of Lee Child's Jack Reacher, Ludlum’s Jason Bourne, Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch, Jeff Carson, Tom Fowler, and M.A. Rothman will latch onto this gritty crime thriller.

Silenced

This is my first time with this author. I felt this was a two story book, I loved the first part but the second was too ghastly and hard to stay with through with the evil that was portrayed? The importance of the second part indicated the severity of the incursion by Cubans and Russians. It was also unrealistic with the evil damage done to people by the torture and hateful attitude of the villains. It was hard to see them come back to work again. The relationship between Tom and the hero was nice to see resolved and understood. I hope this review is helpful to the author.

‘Paradise could be just as deadly as it was beautiful’
A madman and some freaky tech add to this Soviet-Cuban crime ring. And yet, there’s even more to it…

Det. Miller could have been written by Hemingway! Can you name the character and book to which I’m referring?
‘For five more days, Harry trained.
One the night of the fifth day, rain fell.’

‘Evil and vileness could exist alongside purity and virtue – and the world went on.’
After the crime is solved, the author continues a wee bit with how Det. Miller’s world went on.

Now, to read ‘Dismantled’. Will the phantoms of Harry's past tear him apart?

This is my first read by this author and I must say I was really pleased. I love detective stories and the cover on this one trapped me for sure. This is really interesting story. The plot line is solid, the characters are well fleshed out, and the story is written in such a way that you keep guessing how everything is going to pan out. I really recommend this novel This is my true and honest review.

4.5/5 - this book blew me away!

I found this book and author through @KirkpattieCake’s YT channel. Once a quarter she hosts #PitchFit - this gives indies a chance to pitch their book to new readers — AND I’m glad Mr. Alan submitted, Silenced: Detective Harry Miller, book 1. I will read whatever he releases next.

*side note: I’m glad the cover got an update to match the flavor of the book*

The book: 1970s Miami. Police investigation. Dead prostitute. Cuban drug lords. Vietnam Vet. Family in crisis. Violence. Redemption arc. Heroes with hearts of gold. And an author that didn’t pull any punches while telling this brutal, but also, multi-layered story about, family, betrayal, redemption, and honor.

All the characters were so good in this story. Every single main character was fleshed out. The world! I felt like I was with Harry and the gang as they pushed to find Navarro. And the action scenes were written so well.

Harry! Good grief this man went through it, mentally, emotionally, and physically (putting it mildly). I liked how he functioned as an alcoholic, chain smoking, detective that slowly changes his ways throughout the book. Harry is an “at all costs” kind of hero. In this book he goes rogue but not without consequences. This man is the epitome of “and the hits keep on comin” — I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

Clyde. Man, I really liked this guy. Vietnam vet with PTSD hunting a man that took his wife and kids. He’s the anti-hero, imo. And if you ask me he got done wrong by the true antagonist at the end of the book. Needless to say I was invested in his story.

I loved how this cast of characters all converged with one another and fought for the greater good. This story was executed seamlessly. And the reader was given a nice bow at the end with a sweet ending.

I’m a fan of thrillers. This book delivered. Many times I said out loud “NO WAY!!” Once in a crowded waiting room and people stared. I’m not sorry.

I gave a 4.5 because the dialogue in the beginning was a little off, for me. And for a book about police detectives and drug lords there’s not a lot of language which is fine, although it seems like these types of guys wouldn’t have clean mouths. In the big picture the vernacular isn’t a deal breaker.

I totally rec if you like thrillers that are well crafted and written. And I’m totally going to buy the paperback to put on my bookshelf.
