Sōichirō Yamamoto (山本崇一朗, Yamamoto Sōichirō) is a Japanese manga artist. He is known for writing and illustrating Teasing Master Takagi-san and Soredemo Ayumu wa Yosetekuru. Both series have been published in Monthly Shōnen Sunday and Weekly Shōnen Magazine, respectively.
Same Nishikata, same Takagi. Minus the changing emphasis on their feelings, of course.
I mean, I’m running out of ways to describe the treadmill of content that is this series, since there’s so little variation in just about anything. I mean, Looney Tunes got away with this, but you never watched that many shorts back to back without a break.
Which is to say, whatever, the content’s still good. Despite times when my interest has flagged, there’s definitely more good about this manga than not. Any given rating depends more on my mood and the creativity on display in a specific volume than anything else.
This one is a lot of fun and the deduction game in particular emphasizes both the way that Nishikata will always find a way to thoroughly lose and how Takagi is pretty much constantly using these games to try and get across how much she likes him.
The rest of them range around from okay to good - the one where Nishikata is about to win by nefarious means and has a massive attack of conscience is also pretty amusing since he knows that he’s about to screw something up if he’s not careful, but he won’t admit what it is.
There’s a very fun use of your usual ‘excuse to have a character in glasses’ trope with the two childhood friends who have become part of the series, with our boy being especially hopeless at being direct and our girl being hopeless at realizing why anybody might make sure their jogging route goes by her house. The punchline to this one also makes fun of the trope it’s following, which I always appreciate.
So, same old same, with a little more. The romance angle has been in ascent more and more as the story’s gone on and that’s managed to change the tone but not the basics, which has kept it still reasonably fresh. And that’s small r romance, of course. It’s really just silly and sweet.
4 stars - good batch this time, frankly, and if I’m not completely bored after seventeen volumes that’s probably a good sign for any manga.
