Repetitive and wishy washy, Roxanne is at a crossroads between choosing what's right for her versus bending for her fears and family's comfort. Love, sexual identity and navigating the beginnings of adulting are the main themes in this late coming of age story.

Classic preacher's kid, Roxanne felt like the oddball in her environment.

By age 22, she found herself compromising and settling in various avenues of her life- including love.

Will Roxanne be brave enough to end her relationship with a man who ails her? Will she take the path towards her purpose no matter how sloppy it looks? Or will she allow the world and her family to dictate right and wrong?

Sloppy is multicultural interest fiction from Jasmine Farrell.

As a preacher’s kid, Roxy has much to live up to. Can she honor her mother’s beliefs and remain true to herself?

Jasmine Farrell is a new author for me, but I did enjoy this novel. The writing is fresh and concise. The character vacillates, but the writing doesn’t. This is a fresh coming of age story for the millennial generation. There are LGTBQ+ and cultural themes throughout. Sloppy is anything but that. I rate it 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it to readers of multicultural interest and women’s fiction.

My thanks to the author and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book. However, the opinions expressed in this review are 100% mine and mine alone.

A Book Worthy of Every Shelf
A Review by Bob McNeil

“May I write words more naked than flesh, stronger than bone, more resilient than sinew, sensitive than nerve.” -- Sappho

What are the necessary components to make a writer? Far above all other things, a writer must be a logophile. Words must become as important as air, water, and food. Nothing can surpass this bond between the artist and language. Other than that previously mentioned element, a writer must have a child's imagination coupled with the sagacity of a mature philosopher. The combination makes a scribe illustrate the world. And at the same time, discuss what is missing from the portrait. Another item needed for a writer is bravery. Steadfast as a soldier, the writer, armed with a belief, defends their way of expression about any subject. A barrage of negativity bombs from critics must never defeat the writer’s attempts at expressing inner truths.
Jasmine Farrell's novel Sloppy proves that she has all the vital traits of a great writer. Each sentence, paragraph, and page show careful attention to memorable descriptions, believable dialogue, and well-developed characters. The craftmanship proves that the author loves and respects words.
This bildungsroman about a young lady finding comfort in the company of another female has something else. The story is committed to telling the truth about bigoted people who view the world through religious dogma's narrow scope. But regardless of race, gender, or sexual persuasion, every reader will relate to this book. Do not be fooled by the title. The narrative's neat and succinct language expresses the universal need for love and understanding.

BOOK REVIEW: Sloppy By Jasmine Farrell

Sloppy is the first book of the author Jasmine Farrell. The story plot is realistic and it hooked my attention from the first page. When Roxy was eight years old, she had feelings for another girl, Tori. Tori even gave Roxy a heart with craving T+R=4ever. When Roxanne told her mother that she wants to marry a beautiful woman and have babies, her mother called it madness and a sin. She can't love a woman of same sex. Thirteen years later, we see Roxanne trapped in a relationship in which she is not happy. Johnson wants Roxy to be his future wife. Roxy also thought that her mother liked Johnson for Roxy as he mentions himself to be a Christian. Roxanne called Johnson saying she doesn't wanna get married right now. But Johnson somehow convinced Roxy and gave her a ring. Later Roxy lost her chance at an audition because of Johnson. Is Johnson a controlling partner? Is he right for Roxy? Find answers to your questions in this book. The story is captivating and fast paced. Readers would learn at least one important lesson from this book. The title of the book fits perfectly according to the contents of the book. Dialog narration is also good by the author. Roxanne is an amazing character and is written nicely. Go ahead with this book without any second thoughts.

"Sloppy" by Jasmine Farrell

My Opinion:

The title kept me intrigued as I read through this thought-provoking story that dealt with the main characters...Roxanne, her mother, and Johnson. It seemed like Roxanne was very much into homosexual relationships, which was unacceptable to her mother, especially with her being a minister. Then Roxey starts dating Johnson, and it seems like he knew of her previous relationships and still supposedly loved and wanted to marry her, but will that happen? Johnson was quite a character that was only for what he wanted, and that was total control. What will happen when he finally gives her a ring?

As time went on, Roxanne decided not to marry Johnson, which was a good thing; however, she was also wishy-washy, which made this story enjoyable to see if she would finally do what Roxanne did want. Then Johnson was still coming around and trying to get what he wanted, which was Roxy's control. Will that happen?

What will happen when Roxanne has a new love in her life? Will, her mother, accepts this as Roxanne chooses a new love. To get the answers to these questions and more, you will have to pick up 'Sloppy' and see how this author brings it all out to the reader.

By the way, I did see the reason for the title because a lot of what happened in this story was 'Sloppy' [with mother & daughter, [Roxanne & Johnson] and [Roxanne and a few ex-friends] even though it was a good and decent read.

This book is so amazing !! Let's talk about how it made me feel!

It truly plays with your heart and delivers lessons which are inspiring and realistic.

Roxy, it’s such a relatable character, she felt confused and sad, due to the environment in which she was raised, where she was taught from a young age that loving someone of the same sex is a sin, she has felt guilty by several of her decisions, and it’s difficult to be truly herself. Roxy wants and deserves love, but she is fearful that if she opens up, many things can change.

All this has led her to be trapped in this toxic relationship where she is unhappy with Johnson where is difficult to escape. Around the book she’s still trying to define herself and all of her edges, she’s learning how to be unafraid of wanting to be who she is and loving who she loves while facing some many conflicts that are too familiar to lot of us. She feels so real and vulnerable as we all are, I just wanted to hug her and see her happy. At the end I truly couldn't be prouder of her.

Roxy and Silk's connection melted my heart! The chemistry between the two! I just loved them!!

This book deals with issues like toxic relationships and healthy ones, it will teach you how to be yourself and that we all deserve to love and be loved by another person. I can definitely see myself rereading this in the future to re-experience all the emotions.

This were my favorites quotes:

“I was never fixed because my sexuality doesn’t need to be fixed. Took me awhile to realize, it's society, not me. "
"I choose freedom. I choose authenticity. "
When I read them, I just wanted to cry of happiness.

𝑻𝒊𝒕𝒍𝒆: Sloppy

𝑴𝒚 𝑹𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘:
Sloppy is an intriguing story penned by the author Jasmine Farrell. Main characters of the story are Roxanne and Johnson. When Roxanne was eight years old, she felt attracted to her friend Tori. When Roxanne told her mother that she want to marry a pretty girl, her mother told her that homosexual relationships aren't acceptable. As Roxanne grew up, she got stuck with Johnson, a man with issues of his own. He told Roxanne that he wants to marry her and treat her like Princess. But Johnson is a self-centred man.

Once she asked for a ring from Johnson if they were to marry. Johnson gave her the ring after denying initially. But later they got into an argument and Roxanne refused to marry. Johnson asked for his ring back from her. Will this relationship go any further? If yes, what is going to happen in Roxanne's life?

Find out for yourself by picking this novel. I enjoyed reading it. The writing style of the author is nice. Language is simple and easy to understand. Cover photo of the book is well designed. Story is fast paced so I didn't feel bored anytime while reading it. I like to definitely recommend this novel to my fellow readers.

My Review:
Main characters of the story are Roxanne and Johnson. When Roxanne was eight years old, she held her friend Tori's hand longer than she should. Her mother told her that homosexual relationship is a sin. She told Roxanne that the way she feels about Tori is wrong. It has been years since that incident. Now, Roxanne is in a toxic relationship with a man named Johnson. He wants to marry Roxy but Roxy is not sure about marrying him so soon. She asked for a ring from Johnson but he said that his love should be enough for her. When Roxy was stubborn about the ring, Johnson finally got it. A week later, they broke up and Roxy returned the ring to him.

Read this story to find out if Johnson keeps on coming around, will they be back together? There are twists and turns in the story that made it more interesting. Will Roxy ever find love?

Author has done great work in her debut novel. I enjoyed reading the story. Narration is smooth and I binge read it. This book makes the readers realise that we all deserve to be loved. If you are looking for a book for some light reading around this holiday season then don't miss to get your hands on this one. Great story.

Sloppy is the first novel by Jasmine Farrell that I read, but it is no different than her poetry collection in its impact. The storyline is powerful and immensely consuming. But what specifically stood out to me about the book were the characters. They were portrayed in all their real-ness--as they truly are, in all the shades of light and dark.

The book opens with an eight year old Roxy developing feelings for her girl friend Tori in all her innocence but as her feelings are brushed off by her mother, a seed to her identity crises is sown. The book quickly follows Roxy to her adulthood where she now struggles with figuring out her sexuality and who she really is. The narrative is profund and the prose is effortless. Roxy is a fearless character who grows on you in all her originality. An expertly woven, absorbing read.

Sloppy is the coming of age story of Roxanne AKA Roxy, who has been having an internal battle with herself. At a young age, she found herself attracted to girls, but was discouraged by her church going mother. Years later dealing with her on and off again abusive boyfriend, Roxy meets someone who might actually be the love of her life. She must come to a decision of which person is her heart's desire.

I enjoyed the pace of the story as well as the storyline. I did not get bored with not one part of the story and it was a quick read for me. This book was enjoyable and also thought provoking

This is not a cookie cutter romance. This is a story about finding yourself and finding your power to do what is best for you.
Roxanne was a great strong female lead that really had her ups and downs and her story will draw in the reader and have them feeling for her along the way.
Well written with a great pace that has ups and downs and drama along the way. Ultimately a beautiful read.

Jasmine shows how versatile of a story teller she is. This book was detailed, emotionally charged and outright perfect. As sad as I was reading parts of it I wish it never ended. There are ups and downs, plenty of drama and heartache, but an ultimate inspiring tale.
