Just an ordinary morning for Sarah Sweeting—watching her favorite baking show, Cupcake Rivalry, getting ready for work at her Granny’s small-town bakery. All that changes when Sarah spots a contestant who looks like her, sounds like her, moves like her.
Was this her twin sister? The twin her mother ran away with twenty years ago? Were hers and Granny’s prayers finally being answered?
When Granny confirms Sarah’s shocking discovery, Granny suffers a heart attack.
Raven Souwer’s morning began at a frenzied pace—incessantly ringing phones and a Beverly Hills’ bakery full of customers. All because everyone wants to catch a glimpse of the Cupcake Rivalry contestants—Raven and her best friend, Will Durning.
But a phone call from an excited woman who claims to be Raven’s long-lost sister—a sister Raven has no memory of—informs Raven that a grandmother she never knew was in the hospital.
The call changes the course of Raven’s life and brings up the pain she thought she’d overcome.
Will Sarah and Raven finally be united, or will other rivalries separate them again?

The Third and Final book in the Hair Mavens, REALLY BAD HAIR DAY released June 2021. Her newest release is SWEET RIVALRY.
With a well woven plot and wonderfully unique characters, Sweet Rivalry grabbed my heart from the first page! Terri Gillespie skillfully combines, realistic faith elements, with challenging family dynamics, romance, and a touch of mystery in this moving story about twin sisters who were separated when they were young and reunited in their twenties. Those who enjoy meaningful contemporary stories with heartfelt family themes will love this novel. Well written and highly recommended.
Very few books draw me in so completely in the first chapter. Sweet Rivalry not only drew me in, but kept me the entire book. I didn’t want it to end. I usually prefer books with married couples, but this book looked really good with the twin theme, the baking contest, and the small-town bakery. I absolutely loved the four friends: Raven (love her name by the way!), Sarah, Will, and Ash. Drew was a pain, but he definitely served his purpose in the book as being a jerk. I still couldn’t figure out, though, why he wanted to reunite Sarah so badly with her absentee father. Was it more that her father wanted to be reunited with her? I seriously doubt that because he could have done that himself. Did he want to be seen as the hero? You will have to read the book to find out why they’re estranged and what Drew’s motive was. I absolutely wish this book had some taste-testing to go along with it. The chocolate raspberry mini cupcakes made my mouth water along with the homemade bread that Will and Asher perfected and the other sweet concoction that Raven whipped up. And Sarah’s soups and the addition of the coffee bar. Let’s just say, I wish I lived in their small town. Great story and I hope there will be more by this amazing author about these wonderful characters.
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was under no obligation to review it. All opinions are mine.
Secrets, heartbreaking memories, and sister rivalries threaten to destroy the beginnings of a fragile relationship between twins long separated by the trauma of their mother’s addiction. Forgiveness, unconditional love, and team building might be the answer . . . but dare these sisters risk more hurt to realize their dream of family? Laced with the love of baking—including tantalizing recipes and an exciting, televised baking competition—Terri Gillespie paints a vivid and heartwarming picture of a family broken, but working together, ultimately transformed through their budding and building relationship with the God who loves them most and who inspires their creative spirits. A faith-yielding, faith-building book to swell the heart.
I wasn’t sure what this book would be like, but I love the cover and thought it very interesting. And interesting it was. While watching her favorite bake show, Sarah saw someone she pretty much knew for sure it was her long lost twin sister. Their mother had kidnapped the sister and left Sarah with her grandparents, never to be heard from again.
Wow! What a fun, bit sometimes bittersweet story. Having Sarah and her sister Raven together was something fantastic. But it was not all fun and games. It was rough going much of the time. The twins were completely different, having grown up in entirely different circumstances. There were many struggles with both of them. Sarah was ready to welcome her long lost sister they had prayed for so many years. Raven didn’t believe in prayer, she didn’t know about her sister, she only knew her drug addicted mom. So the Cozy homey feeling that was her grandmother’s house didn’t sit well with her. There is a lot going on in the book. A lot of back and forth feelings. But all in all it is a wonderful sweet read that anyone will enjoy.
A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
“Were the Sweeting family secrets about to be revealed? And if so … were either of the sisters ready to learn the truth?”
Having discovered her decades-lost sister while watching a cooking show competition, Sarah Sweeting thinks that life will suddenly be complete. Little does Sarah realize the deep emotional waters both she and her twin, Raven, will have to conquer to begin to form a worthwhile bond.
Gillespie takes an improbable premise and adds just the right amount of romance, family, angst, guilt, and longing to bring us a truly delightful and believable tale.
“What kind of person takes one kid and leaves another?” Sarah wonders why their mother left and didn’t take her. Raven wishes their mother hadn’t taken her when she left. Each envied the other and had trouble empathizing with the other’s emotional struggles. Will they get in their own way of family, or will other people or secrets undo any chance of them learning to bond?
A great novel, recommended! I received a copy through Celebrate Lit. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.
I was captured from the get-go with this book. The story is weaves together lives that need one another whether they realize it or not. The interesting twist in the beginning comes to a fulfilling conclusion in the end.
Imagine you are listening to your favorite show as you prepare for work in the morning, and suddenly you hear your own voice. Grabbing your iPad, you not only continue to hear your voice, but you see your face! It’s on a body you don’t recognize, with tattoos you would never have, and with a short bob of black hair instead of your own long, blonde mane. But it is definitely your face! Well, that’s what happens to one of Terri Gillespie’s main characters, Sarah Sweeting, at the beginning of her novel, Sweet Rivalry. And the action never stops as a family emergency causes Sarah to reach out to her doppelgänger, who she believes is her twin sister—the sister who was kidnapped by their mother twenty years ago and has been lost to the family ever since. Despite the miles and years between them and the ways in which they were raised, Sarah and her sister, Raven Souwer, are both successful bakers. Though there are other similarities, as well, there are also major differences which they might not overcome, especially since Raven seems to have little interest in getting to know her sister.
Throw in a couple of potential romances, a jealous boyfriend, a national bake-off, and a lot of soul-searching, and you have a book which will keep you reading into the night way later than you should.
As an Elk Lake author myself, my review might be somewhat biased. Truthfully, however, I enjoyed this book very much. Terri has a gift for characterization as the five principal characters seemed very believable. Even the conversion scenes were done according to how I believe the characters of Raven and Will would react to the truth of the gospel. That Raven took longer was true to the pain and past she had to overcome.
While the premise was unusual, one twin kidnapped and the other left behind, the basis for this was made clear later in the book. As a former social worker, I found Raven’s character to be believable.
True to most romances, the final outcome was predictable. However, how conflicts might be resolved held my interest as a reader. I appreciate the helps provided at the end of the book for people dealing with addiction or families dealing with loved ones who suffer from addiction. I also appreciated the mouth-watering receipts Terri provides for the baking enthusiasts or those who just might want to try something different for the pallet. I think I might try the Dr. Pepper cupcakes!
I highly recommend this book, even if you are not a romance reader. The treatment of an adult who suffered neglect and abuse at the hands of a drug-addicted parent is well worth the study.
Twins separated? Baked goods? Hunky love interests? A poser bad guy? Sweet Rivalry has it all and you're going to love meeting Raven and Sarah. You'll laugh, mourn, and cry with them - I know I did! Gillespie is a wonder at weaving a story.
Sweet Rivalry is the first book I have had the pleasure of reading by Terri Gillespie. She has woven a heart warming tale that so many of us could relate to. I thought it was a great read. I love the lessons of having faith and the power of forgiveness. It is one of those books that made me want to find out what will happen with the characters. I was able to read the whole book in a couple of evenings before bedtime.
I am going to give Sweet Rivalry a very well deserved five plus stars. I recommend it for readers who enjoy reading clean fiction. I look forward to reading previous books by Terri Gillespie in the future.
I received a paperback copy of Sweet Rivalry from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
When I really enjoy a book…leaving a book review is always hard for me. It always means that my time with the characters is over. Sweet Rivalry is one of those books that I was sad to see end. Ms. Gillespie does a great job of involving the reader. Such a sweet interaction with all the characters. I found myself smiling to myself. Buy a hard copy so you can share this story. Mommakram
This book has an interesting and heart-touching storyline. Raven and Sarah, twin sisters, were separated when they were four years old. Their mother took Raven away from her home and left Sarah with her grandmother. Twenty years later, Sarah sees Raven on a network cooking show. The sisters find a way to reunite and join together to help their grandmother recover from a heart attack. Both love to bake and have been working in bakeries—-Raven in California and Sarah in Missouri. With the help of their best friends and family, the two sisters find that the plans God has for their lives will far exceed anything they had ever dreamed.
I was drawn into this book because the author did such a wonderful job of allowing us to really get to know all of the characters. She allowed us to see all the emotions and adjustments that Raven and Sarah each faced as they began to get to know each other again. I also loved the characters of Asher and Will, especially Asher’s desire to share Christ with those around him. It was encouraging to see how Sarah’s strong faith had an influence on her unsaved sister. This sweet story has a message for all of us to reach out to others.
The story moves along very well and there were enough twists and turns to make me want to keep reading. I didn’t always think that all the scenes between Sarah and her boyfriend, Drew, quite worked and seemed to slow the story down, but that didn’t hinder my enjoyment of the book. The cooking show added extra interest to the book. However, for me it was the growing relationship between Raven and Sarah that gives this book its heart. I would love to read more about these characters, as well as another book by this author.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
While watching her favorite baking show, “Cupcake Rivalry,” to her utter amazement and disbelief, Sarah Sweeting suddenly spots a contestant who looks exactly like her long-lost twin sister, with whom her mother ran away twenty years ago! Her Granny confirms Sarah’s shocking discovery but unfortunately suffers a heart attack. Meanwhile, Raven Souwer’s phones keep ringing incessantly at a frenzied and frenetic pace, with no respite, as everyone clamors to see the Cupcake Rivalry contestants—Raven and her best friend, Will Durning. To add to the confusion, a mysterious phone call causes pandemonium! An excited lady, Sarah Sweeting claims to be Raven’s long-lost sister whom she cannot remember. Sarah informs Raven that their grandmother, whom she never knew, was admitted in hospital. The call resurrects old trauma that lay buried for so long. Can Sarah and Raven finally be united, or will other sisterly rivalry and heartbreaking memories destroy the fragile relationship between twins long separated by the trauma of their mother’s addiction? Forgiveness and unconditional love is the urgent need of the hour, but can these two sensitive sisters risk more hurt of the heart to realize their dream of a united family at long last? Terri Gillespie paints a vivid and heartwarming picture of a broken family, ultimately transformed through their blossoming relationship with God who loves them most. This is a faith-inspiring book that swells the heart and make us sing with the joy of peace and reconciliation.
I don’t have a twin but I’ve always wanted to have twin children. I have older brothers who are twins. But, as a mom, I can’t imagine separating twins. And as a person, I can’t imagine finding out that I had a long lost twin. Imagine finding that out by watching a television show?!
This was a sweet tale that kept reading quickly and easily. While you’ve got some tension and unsolved bits there isn’t a ton of suspense or mystery within the book. You’re just going to be navigating the relationship of twins who have no recollection of each other. Plus a grandmother who raised one and a drug addict mother who raised the other.
Their upbringings couldn’t have been any more different.
The author did a great job making the book believable. The characters had struggles and things to overcome. They were very relatable and believable and you couldn’t help rooting for them along the way. I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to others.
Get a chance to read it? Maybe make sure you’ve got a sweet treat like a cupcake to eat while reading because you’re going to be craving them!
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. This book had it all. Split family, rough childhood, surprise reunion, bakery, competition, small community, devious boyfriend, love and most important, faith. Imagine seeing your long lost identical twin sister on a baking show on TV! Twenty years have past. And when Raven gets a phone call from her twin she never knew she had, what a surprise! And oh what different childhoods they had. The mother raised Rachel/Raven and the grandmother raised Sarah. When they finally meet, Sarah exhibits a little jealousy over Raven and what that will mean with the relationship with her, the grandmother and herself. Will is Raven’s best friend and travels with her from their California town. When Granny has to be admitted to the hospital, Sarah, Raven, Will and Asher (Sarah’s friend) all pitch in to help in the bakery that Granny owns. The real kink in all of this is Sarah’s selfish, devious and secret keeping boyfriend. So much more “meat” or should I say “bread” to this story. I got caught up quickly in all the drama, fun, challenges and love that this story brought out. I fell in love with the characters, well…maybe except one. I found myself with tissues clutched in my hand many times, with tears of both sadness and joy. I didn’t want the story to end. Great job Terri Gillespie! I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author through Celebrate Lit but was not required to write a review.
The book started out in a nice little town where everyone knows each other. We meet Sarah who has a beautiful life with a loving grandmother who supports her, but something is missing. A part of her was taken away when she was a child, her mother left and took her sister Rachel with her with no clues as to where or why. Sarah shares a bakery with her grandmother and loves watching baking shows on TV. She was watching one of her favorites when saw a girl on the show who looks EXATCLY like her! Rachel? Once she discovers it's her long lost twin her grandmother suffers a heart attack and is put in the hospital. I won't spoil anymore of the story because it gets exciting after this and the book is very hard to put down.
This author has created all their characters with care. I can see the town, granny's house and all the scenes so clearly in my head, which is difficult for me so I truly enjoyed this book! There is mystery, humor, heartfelt conversations, many secrets and much needed resolution with a little twist at the end.
Very good for teen to adult readers. And there's even a "questions for discussion" section at the end to talk about what you've just read AND there's RECIPES so you can bake the same things they made in the book!
This is the first book that I have been able to read by Terri Gillespie. Sweet Rivalry was a great first exposure to the author. The book has so much going on - twins who were not sure the other existed, baking competition, and small towns. The book will draw you in within the first few chapters and you will want to continue reading.
Sarah who loves to watch Cupcake Rivalry is watching as she is getting ready for work. She works in her Granny's small town bakery. Imagine her surprise when she sees a contestant that looks like her. She knows that her Granny had mentioned that Sarah's mother ran away with her sister. They had been praying that they would find her.
Her name is Raven Souwer. She has become quite the busy baker - everyone wanting to see The Cupcake Rivalry Contestant. She is completely floored and confused when Sarah calls her and tells her that her Granny, who she does not remember, is in the hospital.
I enjoyed getting to know the characters. I loved the whole Twin getting kidnapped premise. I am a sucker for books set in small towns. I also loved all the cupcake and baking. I love baking and it makes me happy and my kids love it! The book has a realistic feeling. The characters are well written. I hope to read more from this author.
I LOVE a good Christian Romance book. Sweet Rivalry By Terri Gillespie is the latest book that I have read that fits that genre.
I really enjoyed this book from the very beginning. I will say I am an identical twin, so the concept of the book really drew me in. Sarah finding her long lost twin sister Raven after 20yrs was so touching, but the way they found each other, was even more amazing. Sarah discovered her sister while watching TV one morning. Sarah was raised by her Granny when her Mom ran away with Raven when they were babies. Raven had no clue about her Twin Sister until the morning Sarah called and told her Granny had a heart attack and was in the hospital. Will Sarah and Raven be able to reunite as sisters or will something try to stand in their way?
WOW, such a sweet story from beginning to end. I really LOVE how the Author is very creative with her writing. The story does have many twists and turns, but it all comes together and captivates the reader. My favorite character in the book was Granny. She has an AMAZING Faith and is the stronghold for the family. The Sisters do have a lot to work through and talk about and made for an interesting storyline as they aim to reunite! I HIGHLY Recommend this book for anyone who enjoys Christian Romance books! GREAT BOOK!
This is an entertaining Christian romance with much more than just romance. The struggles of sisters reuniting after separation and very different lives is a big part of the plot. There are plenty of misunderstandings to sabotage the potential reunion. Getting past differences to recognize family love is a major issue. There are family secrets that must be addressed and readers may wonder if keeping secrets to prevent hurt is every a good idea. Gillespie explores what it means to find a life filled with warmth and purpose. We wonder if true love will win out or if a disastrous marriage might be in the future.
This is a romance that has much more than just the fluffy, feel good romance aspect. There are real issues needing to be dealt with, pain to overcome, and misunderstandings to correct. Since this is a book about baking, I was happy to see some recipes included. And the best part is that there is a clear presentation of the gospel and how lives are changed when Jesus comes in.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this book through Celebrate Lit. My comments are an independent and honest review.
I enjoyed this book; it flowed quite well most of the time. Most of the characters were well-developed except Drew. I didn't feel he was as well developed as he should have been and his interactions with other characters weren't as well done as the rest of the book.
This is a Christian book and Jesus was mentioned often. The way to become a Christian was shown but could have been more fully shown. The main characters were well-developed for the most part. There were enough twists and turns to keep me interested to the end. In fact, I felt more could have been added to the epilogue and even to the main story, especially concerning the father.
I give this book a 3 out of 5-star rating, not because of the storyline which I really enjoyed, but because of the editing. There were too many times that a word was missing or the wrong tense or even an added word. When this would happen I would need to re-read the sentence and I find this annoying. Since I got the book through CelebrateLit, maybe there will be more editing done, I hope so.
I did receive a free copy of this book through CelebrateLit. I am not required to leave a positive review and all thoughts are my own.
I enjoyed the premise of this story. Twins meeting after 20 years makes for a fun story, especially given that they are so different. We always think twins are a lot alike, but not in this case.
Sweet Rivalry is a sweet Christian romance that spells out the need for a relationship with God.There are many topics the author deals with, including the pain of abandonment. We see how our choices affect not just our lives but others as well. Gillespie keeps hope alive throughout, so it’s not heavy.
The bakery setting is enjoyable, especially because many recipes are included in the back of the book. If I have one complaint it’s a couple of the characters stereotyping lifestyle choices of a main character based on his build and appearance. That could have been left completely out of the book. It added nothing and could be offensive.
However, If you enjoy a clean, Christian romance with not only heart but depth then give Sweet Rivalry a try.
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.
Sarah Sweeting and her grandmother have been looking for her lost twin sister and their mother for a very long time. Than while watching a baking show, she hears someone who sounds just like her. If she had shorter and darker hair. After confirming with her grandmother, that that is her twin, her grandmother ends up in the hospital with a heart attack. Things really couldn't get any worse or better, or could they?
Family secrets begin to unravel and the truth is finally pushing it's way through. This story is about family, braving the barriers that separate us, and loving anyway. These sisters have many ups and downs and I like that they stick together to find out the truth. They are not the only ones hurting, their Granny is as well. Throw in some romances and baking and you have a story with a lot of heart.
I received a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
An unforgettable story! I don't even know where to begin.
There's a lot of hurt, and secrets, and insecurities that have to be worked through. There is also a lot of hope, and healing, and fun to be had.
I will say I laughed out loud more than once, and wanted to knock a few heads together.
The pacing seemed a little fast, to accomplish so many things, so much transformation inside of 3 weeks, but not terribly so.
Sarah and Raven both have plenty of reason to be insecure and jealous of each other. As they work through healing, and shock at why each other feels jealous and insecure, you might catch a glimpse of yourself. Your own insecurities, based on assumptions that are likely less than accurate.
I would love to read more of Sarah and Raven's story, though this book did have a very satisfying ending.
I received a copy of this book from #celebratelit, and chose to review it here. All thoughts are my own.
Sarah Sweeting may live up to her name, but her life sure takes a twist for the unsavory when her long-missing twin sister, Rachel, who now goes by Raven, returns—a twin who doesn’t even remember she had a sister. The young women are oh so different but have enough similarities to prove their family relationship. Raven’s life has been so far from idyllic that she has trouble relating to Sarah and the small-town life she was stolen from. Add to the mix three young men who are involved in various ways in their lives, and the tension increases as well as the plot of the sweet-and-sour story. The intriguing tale captivated me, and the unique characters offer plenty to ponder. The circumstances in the story may be different from readers’ lives, but they certainly include situations most all can relate to. This would make a delightful book club selection. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.
Nice story about two young women who are twins. I liked the concept of them being separated at a young age. They grew up in different environments but still had that sense of not being wanted. The addition of a bakery and competition show was fun to read about. Sarah and Raven have so much to overcome as they get to know each other after all these years. The emotional struggles were well written and I especially liked how faith was represented in the story. I liked the characters but my favorite was their grandmother. Her faith was never shaken and her broken heart of the daughter she couldn't help was so hard to read. The story is a roller coaster of learning secrets, forgiving and finding family. The ending is possibly a cliff hanger and I hope the author continues the story. I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
From the cover of this book you might think this is just a light, fun read. But it really has a lot of layers to it and deals with some serious issues and choices theses characters need to make.
So much happened in the first quarter of the book I almost felt like that could have been a book itself. I wondered what more could happen to keep me reading. But more did happen and I kept reading and enjoyed the story.
I loved the relationship that slowly grew between the two sisters and there are a couple of other relationships that grow too, but I won’t give that away.
I also love local bakery’s so this book was right up my ally.
A copy of this book was given to me through Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.
Oh this book. Long lost twin sisters? Family drama, romance, distrust, and past traumas? The author did and great job with all of it. I was expecting a light fun read but this was more.
I’m not saying it wasn’t an enjoyable read, I’m saying it was deeper than I expected and the author did a realistic and good job with it. It would be a shock to find your sister the way either one of them found. I think it would be crazy to be on either side of this one. The author did an amazing job and I was happy to have read it.
5/5
Thank you to the author/publisher for the review copy of this book via Celebrate Lit. I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.
Sweet Rivalry is a heartwarming tale of reunited twin sisters, blending elements of faith, family, and romance. I enjoyed getting to know the unique characters and the mouthwatering descriptions in the charming small-town bakery. And the national baking competition fills the plot with excitement.
Sarah and Raven had different upbringings, which reveals struggles and conflicts with family dynamics, but maintains an enjoyable tone. I especially enjoyed the elements of faith, adding a meaningful layer to the tale.
With themes of forgiveness, love, teamwork, and transformation, this sweet Christian story offers engaging touches of mystery and romance.
#CoverLoverBookReview received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions are 100% mine.
This is a sweet story with a lot of heart. It really plays up the twin connection, with the separated-in-childhood sisters unknowingly ending up in the same profession (baking). Similar but different, they inspire each other and learn from each other, each experiencing their own personal development and growth throughout the book.
I do wish the author had taken a bit more time to introduce the characters before jumping into the action--I didn't feel like I connected with them as much as I could have/wanted to. Still, it was a sweet, clean read with a strong emphasis on faith and Christianity.
I thought this was a good story about two sisters trying to come to terms with traumatic things from their past and learning to move forward together. I also liked how they learned to turn to God to help them to learn to forgive those who had hurt them. I also liked how the sisters and their friends, Will and Asher, were able to help each other to work through their different problems and to follow their dreams. I thought the story was well written with great characters that were easy to relate to.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
