Goblin Slayer receives a request from Sword Maiden to look for Noble Fighter, who has disappeared while on a goblin hunting quest. He and his party go to the snowy mountain in the north to find her.But from the way the goblins attack the frozen village to the mysterious chapel they keep, everything about this horde gives Goblin Slayer pause."You say they're... learning?"Exploring the dungeon despite one of their companions being wounded, the party discovers something."The God of Wisdom, of external knowledge..."Something has brought these goblins together to build a nest in an ancient fortress - and Goblin Slayer and his friends are knocking at the door! Kumo Kagyu and Noboru Kannatuki bring you the fifth volume of this dark fantasy!
In light of the flap about this series' manga-and-anime adaptations, I'll just say that there's a line in this book when Noble Fencer is captured by goblins that actually says "We don't need to see what happens to her next." Later we're told her chastity has been stolen and she's clearly suffering from PTSD, but that's how the novels handle such content. It's about surviving and working through trauma, not the trauma itself, and that's certainly true of Goblin Slayer himself as a character and the changes his party is able to help him make. Priestess is his main humanizing influence, reminding him that he can keep going, he can be a person, and none of that means that he has to stop killing goblins. That's made very clear in this volume, and it's nice to see, especially because Cow Girl clearly understands that - there's no petty jealousy, just Cow Girl knowing that she and Priestess are both important people in different ways.
Another excellent novel in the series, much like volume 2 it is a singular, lengthy mission against a strong foe. In terms of writing, this novel is on par with the very first, meaning it's one of the best in the series. It contains combat, strategy, character development (especially of Goblin Slayer) and, as usual, reminds us that goblins are a bigger threat than many in the series recognize. Some of the implications leveled here are especially harrowing, not just for the group in this arc, but for the future.
The drawstrings are slowly bring pulled, there are elements of a deeper narrative and a bigger foe directly connected to the goblins, leading them. We see elements of goblin evolution here, religion most notably, and a disturbing revelation of their ability to think bigger than just stealing what they need. Some thing is up, and I look forward to future revelations of what it may be.
Despite being the coldest setting thus far, Goblin Slayer seems to have his heart melt ever so slightly, acting more compassionate and caring than ever before. That is to say, more "compassionate" and "caring" by his measure, certainly not by others.
The ending was particularly excellent, matching the closure of this volume while still posing new threats and questions. And, I must say, it was quite endearing as well!
This book is about an adventure. I really enjoyed the hell out of this story. While it's not the most original ever, it was hard to put it down. So yeah, while no masterpiece, it definitely deserves the 5 stars. It was entertaining :D
After a slight break in Volume 4 it's back to full on Goblin Slaying, this time in a snowy mountain. Another great adventure (well, at least by non-High Elf Archer standards)!
done reading this after having seen the movie, so here are my thoughts on both.
First off, as usual the book has more scenes than in the movie and lots more character interactions as well, that said, I felt the movie from when I saw it was rushed and didn't seem to coherent at times, after reading the book now I see why, so it can be a good way to fill out the holes in the movie.
Anyway in this movie our favorite Goblin Slaying team is tasked with 2 missions, saving any person they can and slaying Goblins, as the god's playthings, it seems they grew wanting an even bigger adventure for our heroes and decided to stack the odds against them a bit higher than usual, previous parties have tried the mission before only to never be heard of again so this time around the bard sung goblin slayer adventurer is called into action as it appears these Goblins seem to be more than a match for Porcelain heroes, will our heroes find out the mystery of the castle and what happened to previous adventurer? well I'll try not to spoil much.
The writing took a big turn for me, this book seemed a bit long this time around, I believe that while this book was action packed (aside from being a sneak mission), the characters had to explain all their actions and thoughts and felt some of the things they did took longer to happen than what they needed, I don't think its a bad thing but I kinda got used to the previous book where things felt a bit quicker, Goblin Slayer as a whole again showed his expertise in planning and combat by doing things were his comrades were left puzzled at times and finally went "ohhh" so that was your plan after the payoff happened, one of the characters felt a bit wasted for me, I understand that having gone through some kind of trauma made the character silent and have sudden outburst but the character had the making to be of much more help than what we got, that said Priestess knows how horrible the character felt so we should emphasize, the team gets split and its kinda interesting how different these 2 teams can work to reach a common goal all while exchanging the same banter as usual, in this novel I think we actually see some more understanding on the part of High Elf Archer and the Dwarf, they just like to tease each other but are fully aware how capable each are., all in all you see some character growth which is fine by me and if you love these characters, you can't go wrong with this book.
This is what I signed up for! I really enjoyed myself with this one, whilst volumes 3-4 were kind of tedious and lacked, well, Goblin Slaying, this book jumps straight into an old fashioned Goblin Slaying adventure! It's easy to see why the movie jumped ahead of the anime and into this volume, it's much, much more interesting to read and has a lot more action to it.
It also has an interesting, thinking, INTELLIGENT Goblin Antagonist! Who has a special class too! This Goblin was different to every other Goblin we've seen before, not quite a lord or a shaman but something else entirely.
There's a new character introduced, a bit of mystery, planning, and some classic Goblin Slayer shenanigans which altogether make this the perfect Goblin Slayer story, this is the way the stories need to advance in the future, not just having character sit around during a festival haha.
Really liked this, keep going Kumo Kagyu, cannot wait to see more of my favourite fantasy medieval adventurer!
No better series has been written in the genre and if people were more open minded this would be mentioned with Robert Jordan and Patrick rothfuss pay full price read it and enjoy the bargain
Otra excelente novela de Goblin Slayer. Este volumen en particular se trata de la novela que después fue adaptada como película, la que titularon Goblin's Crown.
Finally a proper Adventure and Action after two volume of slow burn(what I consider mostly filler). Overall a decent book, though I found the character of priestess forced at times.
A welcome return to goblin slaying form by the eponymous Goblin Slayer and his band of intrepid adventurers.
This was my favourite of the five light novels I read because not only was it material not yet covered in the anime (and so I wasn't retreading material I'd already seen) and it was exactly what the title promised: Goblin Slayer and his party killed the goblins in a new and exciting setting, with new challenges.
Still, I must admit I prefer the anime and look forward to its second season.
Hehe, I'm finally done reading the fifth volume of Goblin Slayer, which covered the Goblin's Crown arc. Having already read the version of the story in manga and seen the animated movie version, I had looked forward to reading how the story would've unfolded in the original light novel. And to my delight, I was able to read more into the details that might not be shown or covered in either the animated movie or the manga.
Like the fact that most of Noble Fencer's original party members had actually consisted of Porcelain ranked members, which... once you looked back at the story you'd begin to understand a bit more better on why certain things had happened the way it did. It's a common enough story after all, for a group of adventurers to attempt to make a name for themselves and deal with goblins, who were supposed to the weakest of all monsters. And of course, things ended up turning bad due to adventurers underestimating those so-called weak creatures.
I really love reading some of the little exchanges between the Goblin Slayer's party members that may ended up not making it into the manga and movie. I mean, it was almost a year since the party got together and it was nice to read about them teasing each other and grew even closer.
Yet another volume of goblin slaying. However, this one is another longer adventure with GS and crew... and once again things are not always what they seem. Sure we see the banter between the High Elf Archer and the Dwarven Shaman, but we also see some character growth as well. Thankfully these people do not just remain static cookie-cutter characters. I almost hope they have a new addition to the party, but that might be asking too much.
Verdict: Well worth reading, if you've fallen prey to the controversy over this series, give the light novels a shot.
