The Girl of Magic and Dreams

An exciting and magical middle-grade fantasy adventure, packed with danger, friendship, a memorable villain, and a snarky, but lovable, talking cat!

Twelve-year-old Sophia Warner comes from a long line of Dream Watchers, humans possessing magical abilities from the Sandman himself and entrusted with protecting the Dream Realm. Frustrated by her slowly evolving powers and the continuous disapproval of the Council of Dreamers, Sophia becomes more and more reckless as she tries to force her full abilities to manifest in a desperate quest to locate her mom—who went missing in the Dream Realm four years earlier.

But things take a dangerous turn when Watchers begin to go missing and the ruler of the nightmares, the Shadow Queen, is to blame. Trapped on a dark island in the world of dreams by the Sandman long ago, the evil queen craves to find enough magic to finally break free from her prison and take over the Dream Realm.

As the only child Dream Watcher, Sophia is told to stay out of it. But when tragedy strikes her family, and the Council of Dreamers hesitates to intervene, Sophia is forced to make a choice. With the help of her best friend, a magical cat named Cosmo, can Sophia not only conquer her own fears and learn to control her magic, but also stop the Shadow Queen’s evil plans before all is lost?

The Girl of Magic and Dreams by Charity Tober is a delightful fantasy read for middle graders that adults can enjoy too!

I love a good book that is packed full of fantasy and fun, and lucky for me The Girl of Magic and Dreams is just that! Sophie Warner is a twelve-year-old girl who comes from a long line of Dream Watchers, people who descended from the magic of the Sandman himself. They protect the dream realm from the dark Shadow Queen. Years ago, her Mother disappeared because of the Shadow Queen, so she's been living with her Uncle ever since, and her fantastical cat friend Cosmo! Things start going wonky in the Dream Realm as Sophie works on her training, and pretty soon her, Cosmo and a friend are going to need to help save the world!

This book is an absolute delight! Sophie and Cosmo (who can telepathically talk to each other) are a hoot, as if the relationships built throughout this book. I really need her super power though! What I would give to understand what my cats are saying... This book is middle grade but full of fun that all ages will really enjoy it. There's lots of fantasy, heart, and fun packed throughout this book. I'd definitely pick up more books by Charity Tober and suggest books fill their library shelves with engaging books like this one!

Overall, this is a magical book that is a must read for middle grade readers. I highly recommend it!

Sophia is a Dream Watcher, one of many who guards the Dream Realm. This book about Sophia and the Dream Realm. It is written for 9 to 12 year olds, but it can be enjoyed by many.

a magical dream realm, a powerful girl, and a talking (sort of) cat

I loved The Girl of Magic and Dreams. It had a great story, interesting characters, and a fantastic setting. I really enjoyed Sophia and Cosmo’s bond, who wouldn’t want a giant house cat you can communicate with telepathically as a best friend? While categorized as a mid grade book, I, a woman in her 40s, enjoyed it immensely. Tweens, teens, and adults could all appreciate this book.

- I tried to finish, but this book just wasn't for me. I liked the idea of this story - the magic and Dream Realm - and the cover art perfectly depicts the world the author created. But I was bored and couldn't get into the story.
