Kathi Oram Peterson is a new-to-me author, and she hooked me with the first three words in her new novel, Danger Unknown, "He's found me." As a lover of romantic suspense, I was hooked, and although I prefer my romantic suspense novels to have a little more romance and a lot more sizzle, this was still one really good, exciting, sweet, and suspenseful read, and it gets 4-stars from this reader.
Brooke Steward and her 6-year-old daughter, Izzy, have been on the run for their lives for the past six months, following the murder of Brooke's police officer husband, Brandon--in the garage of their home. We learn early on that he was murdered by his police partner, Gerald, the reason why is unclear at the outset, but we also soon learn that Izzy saw it happen, hid to save herself, and hasn't spoken a single word since it happened. They've been running from Gerald ever since, and no matter what fake name she uses, or how far from their Las Vegas home they travel, Gerald always seems to find them, although Brooke uses every bit of knowledge she possesses to evade him.
After spotting Gerald enter the diner where she was working under a false identity, she fled, packed up Izzy, who was hiding alone in a cheap motel, and took off driving, with no destination in mind, but she is so exhausted she eventually thinks she's sees Gerald's car behind her, swerves to avoid him, and eventually winds up driving off the road into a ravine, unconscious. Izzy, who steals every scene she's in, climbs out, looking for help for her mom, and finds it at the small equine therapy ranch owned by Michael Calder, a veteran with PTSD and a recovering alcoholic.
Since Izzy can't speak, her disheveled appearance speaks volumes, and Michael is soon following right behind her as she leads him to the site of the accident. As understated good guy heroes go, Izzy couldn't have found a better man to help them, and although Brooke doesn't trust easily, giving him another false identity, he's soon getting medical help for Brooke, who has a concussion, while helping Izzy regain her ability to speak, and he eventually goes on the run with with them, trying to understand what they're running from, and trying to keep them safe.
What follows is one heck of a suspenseful read and a slow reveal of who they're running from and why, as well as a slowly building attraction between Michael and Brooke. For readers who are offended by graphic sex scenes, rest assured that this novel has none. Although, when we learn who's behind Brandon's murder, who is behind it all, and the why of it, it did stretch my willing suspension of disbelief nearly to the breaking point, but what an exciting, shocking, surprising denouement, and what a sweet HEA finish, that I wish had either been longer or had included an epilogue.
Kathi Oram Peterson has proven herself to be an author whose novels I'd like to read more of, and I'm certainly happy to be able to recommend this one.
I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions expressed are my own.
