A Casterglass Garden

Rate this book
Meet the Penryns…

The Penryn family have always been eccentric—living in a dilapidated castle in the wilds of Cumbria with an orchid-mad father and a classicist mother who likes to re-enact Greek myths, who wouldn’t be? Penniless and proud, Walter Penryn refuses to give up his birthright—until taxes, bills, and the need for a new roof force him to reconsider.

Now the family is restoring the castle, and Olivia Penryn is in charge of reviving the once-profitable garden. Nursing a broken heart and a guilty conscience, Olivia longs to lose herself in roses and lavender, but she’s filled with doubt. She’s never handled a project this massive. When Olivia hires the gorgeous Will Turner to help with landscaping, her bruised heart begins to heal—and hope.

A widower and father of two, Will has plenty of his own problems. Is he strong enough to take on Olivia’s? As his children become attached to this loving, ethereal beauty, he wonders if their wounded hearts can blossom like the flowers surrounding them—or will hidden secrets and old mistakes cost them a second chance at happiness?

Kate Hewitt is sooo good! A Casterglass Garden has been an absolute delight to read. It helps that the story is set in northern England’s Lakes District, which is just dripping with beautiful scenery, however it is this author’s ability to describe that scenery through the eyes of her characters that makes it so easy to believe you are right there beside them as their story unfolds. Olivia and Will are so easy to relate to. They’re not perfect people; each has their flaws, which make them such believable characters. I loved watching them become friends while fighting the inconvenience of attraction to each other before succumbing to that attraction at the urging of Will’s children. The secondary story involving the restoration of the Casterglass Castle to its former glory keeps things bubbling along and I loved watching Olivia and Will come up with one fabulous landscaping idea after another. I can’t wait for the next story in this series but in the meantime it’s nice to know I have this book and its predecessor to reread whenever I want another hit of Lakes District goodness.

This is a series about the Penryn family who own Casterglass Castle in Cumbria. Each book features a different sibling's romance, set against an overarching story of trying to save the castle.

This book concerns Olivia. Shy, quiet and self-effacing, she worked at a garden centre in Leeds until a disastrous romance with a married man sent her fleeing home. Now she's been charged with restoring/transforming 30 acres of unloved grounds in a matter of months on no budget and with no assistance, other than a few hours of her nephew's time every few weeks.

Fortuitously Olivia meets Will Turner in the local pub one night. Will is a landscape gardener, although since his move from Norfolk to Cumbria he has spent more time doing mundane gardening and fencing than the grand projects he envisaged. Enthralled by Olivia's rough sketches of the Secret Garden she envisages, Will invites himself along to view the gardens and gets a part-time job helping Olivia. But Will is a widower with two small children, whose wife only recently died, he's not in the market for romance, and after nearly destroying a marriage Olivia is guarding her heart this time.

If creating a secret garden in the grounds of a dilapidated castle, cute moppets and irritating siblings is your cup of tea then I think this will be right up your street.

Ideal for lovers of Katie Fforde, Sue Moorcroft and Milly Johnson.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

Bumped for release.

This is Olivia Penryn and Will Turner's story.
The crocuses were pushing their small, bright heads up through the earth in cheerful clusters that reminded Olivia Penryn of little bells as she walked through the walled garden of Casterglass Castle, the remnants of its beauty now hidden beneath a dense thicket of frost-tipped nettles and tangles of bindweed.
She’d arrived back at her ancestral home a week ago, and she needed to get to work.
The trouble, she thought ruefully, was knowing where or how to start.
“Hi, I’m Will.” It took Olivia a few belated seconds to realise this greeting had been directed at her.
She looked up from her napkin, blinking the world back into focus, and saw a man around her own age giving her a rueful smile as he stuck out a hand for her to shake.
“Sorry, I can see you’re busy, but as everyone else is engaged, I thought I should introduce myself.”
I recommend reading.
A Casterglass Garden by Kate Hewitt is a 4 star book.
I am looking forward to reading more books by Kate Hewitt.

A beautiful tale about learning to love again.

Reading a Kate Hewitt book is like hanging out with old friends. The Penryns are the kind of fun, quirky people I would want to know. They have issues, like anyone else, and they learn how to move past them. Sometimes, it’s a bumpy road, but they always land where they should.

In this book, Olivia Penryn returns home to Casterglass Castle in Cumbria, to help restore the castle to its former glory, so it can become a public attraction. She left York after a relationship ended badly and doesn’t want anyone to know the details. Dating is the last thing Olivia wants. When Olivia meets Will Turner, a widow raising two little children on his own, she can’t help but be drawn to him. Will is not looking for a relationship either. He is still mourning his wife. As Olivia and Will work together on the Castle gardens, they become good friends. As fate would have it, they start to fall in love, but are afraid to move forward.

This book is part of a series and each book can be read on its own. But I would recommend reading from the start so you get to know the family better. The are many memorable scenes in this book, but my favorite is when Will and his son have a conversation about Olivia and it convinced Will to finally make his move on Olivia.

A CASTERGLASS GARDEN is the second book in Kate Hewitt’s KEEPING UP WITH THE PENRYNS series. I love Hewitt’s writing and this series set in Cumbria following the Penryns as they try to save their family home: a castle that needs a lot of work. A CASTERGLASS GARDEN focuses on Olivia who has returned home after her last romantic relationship ended horribly. Her job in the fight to save the castle: tame the gardens and turn the grounds into something amazing for tourists. It’s an overwhelming job, and Olivia needs help. Will Turner has faced his own tragedy and is now a widower with two children trying to make a go of life in a new area. Working to restore the grounds of a castle would be a dream come true and solidify his landscaping business. His growing friendship with Olivia is a bonus.
Hewitt does a wonderful job developing the Will and Olivia’s characters and slowly building their relationship. Her secondary characters are entertaining. It was a lovely read, and with every description Hewitt makes me want to visit Cumbria and the castle, weather and all.
Perfect to curl up with, I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
Thanks to the publisher for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of the book. All opinions are my own and freely given.

A Casterglass Garden is the second book in the latest contemporary romance series, Keeping Up with the Penryns by Kate Hewitt. I enjoy these visits to a part of the world that I have never had the opportunity to see. Full of descriptions of life, culture, and locale it feels as if I have taken s trip there. Olivia Penryn and family are working to restore the family castle. She is in charge of he gardens. A huge undertaking so Olivia employs Will Turner. Their live become intertwined but not with doubts, struggles and secrets.

This is classic Kate Hewitt contemporary romance. The characters are understated but if you look deeply you see extremely complicated lives of people who make mistakes, are learning to accept what can’t be changed and change what they can for the better. Easy to read with characters that are easy to like.

An ARC of the book was given to me by Tule Publishing which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I recently finished reading "A Casterglass Garden" by Kate Hewitt. It's the second book in the "Keeping Up with the Penryns" series, but it was the first book I read from the series. I picked up this book because I was interested in the setting, and it did not disappoint me. The author did an excellent job of describing the setting, which made the story more immersive. The characters were well-developed, and the plot was engaging.

The story revolves around Olivia Penryn and her family, who are working to restore their ancestral castle. Olivia is responsible for the gardens, which is a massive undertaking. To help her with the task, Olivia hires Will Turner, a widower with two young children. As they work together to bring life back to the garden and grounds of the castle, their lives become intertwined. Both Olivia and Will have their struggles and secrets, but as they work together, they might find a way to bring more than just a garden back to life.

Spoiler alert!
This one was a littler harder for me to get through than the rest of Hewitt’s books. The main male character was widowed at age 36; I was widowed at age 38. The late wife’s name was Rachel and she had cancer; my name is Rachel and I just finished fighting cancer. Rachel was diagnosed with cancer when her youngest child was 3.5; I was diagnosed with cancer when my only child was 3.5. It was hard for me to read. The author very briefly touched on the sad reality that the youngest child likely doesn’t even remember her mother; that was my biggest fear: if I died from cancer, my child wouldn’t remember me.

Hewitt handled the difficult topics gently, and while I had to stop the audio book several times to take a breather due to my shared life experiences, I felt like the topics were true to life.

I have now read/listened to 13 of Hewitt’s books and I just love them. They’re a bit formulaic, but the stories are all engaging and fun for me.

This is the second book in this fun series all set around Casterglass Castle and the Penryn siblings who call it home This is Olivia's story she is the quite shy retiring member of the family who has come home to lick her wounds after she had an affair with a married man a man she never knew was married Unable to handle the fact she could have destroyed a family she has retreated to the family home With her gardening background she is given the job if building a secret garden on the family estate only problem is she has to do it with no help and no money That is when she meets Will Turner he is a landscape gardener and a new widower to two children He has been making ends meet with basic gardening and see this as his opportunity to do what he really wants to Can two damaged people find what they need with one another.

A nice book in this series about a family reuniting to save their family home - Casterglass. This one follows Olivia as she attempts to renovate and bring back the castle's garden. She doesn't have the self-confidence to do it herself and so, enlists the help of Will, a local widower and single father of two young children. Olivia is reeling from a bad relationship and doesn't want anyone to know the truth of it. Will is not sure he is ready for a new life after the sudden death of his wife a year and a half earlier. The book is about whether these two can work their magic on the garden as well as each other. I liked Olivia better than her old sister, Althea, who was the subject of book #1. She seems to have a tender heart and a true repentance about her part in her former relationship. Will also seems to be a genuinely nice guy and you can't help rooting for them. No sex or profanity.

Kate Hewitt has written a lot of charming little novels about women rebuilding their lives and finding "true love", but she seems to have exhausted the formula. I don't think I can bear to read another novel about two erstwhile lovers who simply cannot summon the fortitude to tell each other they care.

This one centers around a deep dark secret in the heroine's romantic past. It is utterly ridiculous. Olivia, the heroine, is so inarticulate and emotionally immature that I want to tell the guy to RUN. But he actually seems to be a match for her in that way, so whatever. It's a shame, really, because the setting--renovating the family's estate and its gardens in the wilds of Cumbria--is charming and appealing, and the extended family is delightfully eccentric yet warm.

This is book 2 in the Keeping up with the Penryns series and can be read as a stand alone. The ending sets the stage for book 3. Olivia is returning to the dilapidated castle in Cumbria to help her family turn the estate into a public part and tourist destination. She running from an affair gone bad and is going to redo all the gardens and grounds around the old castle. She is assisted by local Will who is a single father of two young children. As the family works to save the estate Olivia and Will learn that love can happen twice. Sweet and easy read. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

THIS IS THE ONE! This is my favorite in this series(so far)!!! The characters are great, the plot line is believable, and it leaves you with all the feel goods.

What if you fell for a man that was married? What would you do if everyone around you found out and thought that you were knowingly the other woman? What would you do after you moved away to start fresh and found yourself falling for a new man? A Casterglass Garden has some heavy life topics, but it also deals with them delicately.

This is a 4/5 stars for me and I would recommend it to anyone that likes fluffy, romantic, quick reads. This was sweet even while dealing with past traumas.

This was such an enjoyable and sweet read. I fell in love with the story line and the characters. I thought that author did an amazing job with this book. Olivia and Will were a perfect match and as their friendship grew so did their feelings. They both are so broken from things that happened in their past and neither is sure of what the future holds. Will they be able to grow something amazing or will they let their fears hold them back? I voluntarily reviewed this book in exchange for an honest review.

So many amazing elements!

I have been enjoying the reading life for the past 2 years and I don't know how I haven't discovered Kate Hewitt yet. It is definitely love at first read! This book has so many amazing elements.
It has a single dad, a jilted lover who might want to date again, two beautiful little children, a dysfunctional family (unrelated to almost everyone just named), a beautiful Victorian-era castle that is being restored as relationships and family are being restored.
I will be looking for my next Kate Hewitt read as soon as I press submit. 💕 📚

I'm so happy to have discovered this author

I greatly enjoyed this book, even though I was unfamiliar with this author. The book is so well written that I had trouble putting it down. I've learned a little more about the United Kingdom from reading this book. There were a few words here and there that I was completely unfamiliar with, but I still really liked this book and this author.

Very interesting and intriguing, a good clean romance. After working together for months and officially dating for two months, Will a widower, finally takes off his old wedding ring. Now he feels free too ask Olivia to marry him. Read about Olivia's family and the Castle they live in.

2nd book in the series...and again, good enough that it keeps my interest and makes me want to continue.
I do think I liked this better than the first.
Now onto the 3rd
Just in the mood for some quick easy listening these days. This one took me longer and I put it on hold while I read a book that came in thru the library.

Sweet love story

Sweet clean love story that takes place on the grounds of an historic castle and gardens. Not really a page turner so to speak, but keeps you interested. Great Saturday afternoon cozy read. Its book two of a series, but ends nicely and gives a nice beginning to move on to book three.

Beautifully Moving

Beautiful story of second chances and redemption, along with facing your past and owning your mistakes. The descriptions of the garden, plants, and flowers are incredible, too. I love how even though introverts, both Olivia and Will find a way to openly express themselves to each other, the most healing love of all.

I read the Kate Hewitt Amherst Island series, which was historical fiction and really enjoyed it so I thought I would try another book by her. I got it free on my Kindle so I said why not? Well I will not be going any further with this series as this book did not live up to my expectations. I kept waiting for it to get better and it never did and the ending was a major disappointment!

To be completely and utterly honest, I simply could just not get into this book. I tried it 5 different times and yes, each time I made it further in but I simply could not get into it enough to finish it. I normally like Ms. Hewitt's novellas but not this one.

Although I enjoyed this, it wasn't my favorite by this author. It didn't "feel" the same to me as her previous books have, because I couldn't warm to the heroine (or her family). However, that's a matter of taste, and a Kate Hewitt book is always worth the read.

The relationships among the adult children remind me of my siblings. The parents are space cadets and rather unbelievable. I do love the way they all came together to save their family estate. Sure would be nice to do a tour of such places.
