One night is all it takes to change Quinn's life forever.
Quinn is used to being a punching bag for her cousins and the uncle who raised her, but when they take it too far one night, she finds out she’s not quite as human as she believed. Bruised, broken, and terrified, she runs for her life.
The last thing she expects is to run right into three alphas—a witch, wolf, and vampire—all of whom immediately try to protect the hysterical and newly awakened omega. She’s heard enough about alphas to know she won’t be safe with them for long, but with her abusers being her only alternative, she isn’t exactly eager to return home. Lucky for Quinn, there’s more to these alphas than meets the eye. Perhaps they’re all the home she really needs.
Their group continues to grow, with two betas quickly making themselves part of the coven, and having their balance finally settles something in them all. It’s too bad that the world outside them is far from satisfied. The species aren’t meant to mix, and the traditionalist supernatural community is ready to rip apart any relationship that breaks the status quo.
With everything on the line, what can one omega do?
This novel is part of The Knottyverse, a series of books set in the same ABO world. This is an omegaverse standalone intended for readers eighteen and up. There are some elements some readers may find triggering, such as violence, mentions of sexual assault, and abuse.
Jarica is an American author. She prefers writing paranormal and fantasy books. When she isn't writing she is playing her xbox with her husband and fellow nerd. She has two crazy boys who make writing a challenge, but one she gladly accepts.
This whole book just fell flat. The world building was extremely spotty, with huge pieces either left out or the author assumed that the reader would already have the info.... even though this is the first book and a standalone. There wasn't really any character development, just characterisations because of species. There was a bare attempt at relationship building, but again, it was very one dimensional. There were technical issues with the writing, such as saying a character walked in and out having given something to someone.... without an explanation of what the something was. Or failing to describe the main character, other than short, until more than halfway through the book. Worst of all, for a soft core erotica attempt, the sex scenes were boring and Quinn's experience level doesn't match her life experiences prior to leaving her uncle (whose presence in her life was never fully explained, nor was her parentage). Honestly, I was hoping for better from this author and had another series of hers on my "To Read" list, but I doubt that I'll bother now.
Quinn is a punching bag. Her uncle, her cousins, life- they all keep taking swings. Until one day a vampire walks into the coffee shop and takes a sniff. She was raised human and has no clue that not only has he scented an omega, but his mate. But soon after, fate sends her running right into his arms. And the arms of 2 other alphas.
Spoilers ahead. I've noticed a trend with this author. World building just doesn't exist. Plots are shaky, fractured and ignored. The stories are all character driven, but growth doesn't happen. Oh, trigger warnings were vague in the blurb so here goes: she is assaulted but not raped. Her delightful cousins decided to sell her but an opportunity presents itself and she escaped. Where I have the problem is she's 25. She didn't make plans to run at 18? Didn't sock away any money, hide clothes, plan to hide in a shelter, catch a bus to anywhere, absolutely nothing to remove herself from the abuse. Even if the uncle didn't pay her, she could have had the shelter run planned out. She didn't even try to save herself. She was a damsel. And then, when she was sold, beaten, nearly drugged and raped, she goes back?! I almost gave up but I gave the author a pass on not allowing the rape and kept going. These alphas are apparently all friends. How? No clue. Their factions are all insular- vampires, wolves and witches stick to their own kind. So how they became friends remains a mystery. Also, usually it's 1 alpha, a couple betas and 1 or more omegas depending on gender. So, 3 alphas with an unknown friendship all deciding to share an omega is unusual. Supposedly this combining of factions grants more power, so local packs and covens are concerned about losing their leadership roles. We're also told that omegas are precious but the pack is abusing theirs. The vampires are getting human women drunk and forcing change on them as it always leads to an omega- if they survive. So high casualties and then rampant abuse by whoever claims them. The elders know about this but don't stop it. Not sure what role they actually play. They don't stop the assault by the pack and coven. While all this is going on, the relationship we're supposed to believe is love is being skipped over in huge time gaps in the background. We don't see her emotionally heal. We don't see the little moments of bonding. Any relationship we do see is basically bedroom activities. Which has a place but isn't romance. It's erotica. It's fine just label it as such. All these "romances" lately are nothing but erotica. Where's the actual romance? This is basically a rescue payed off with sex. They rescue her, she goes into heat, suddenly it's love. We never learn about the different varieties of supernaturals. Are wolves the only shifters? What kinds of witches are there? These vampires can handle sunlight and have kids. Are they immortal? Why do they need blood, since the usual mythology doesn't apply? In all this time why haven't other families formed like theirs? Why did her uncle and cousins hate her so much? What was the point of them being so powerful if they ran off into the sunset? There's a hundred really amazing possibilities that went nowhere but the bedroom. And that's why the mixed feelings. I appreciate the lack of rape, and them being big on consent. But all the interesting parts of the story went nowhere.
*FLAIL* I do love me some some sweet and smexy Omegaverse! Jarica delivered one heck of a winner here. While definitely on the sweet side, there is some domestic violence and some just plain ol’ violence, so mind any triggers. For the most part, we have a delightful group of misfits. Two witches (one alpha and one beta), two werewolves (one alpha and one beta), an alpha vampire, and a human female that’s recently discovered she’s not so human… and also an omega. There’s plenty of action and plenty of steam. I’m excited to see more in this world! 💜
I fell so hard for Quinn and her “motley” crew that form their own pack. Quinn proves that more than anything she’s a survivor. Her guys work hard to prove how different they are from the people she knows. The group shows that their pack welfare will come before anything else. The author really does a great job of helping you feel their fated mate status. This whole group made me fall in love with them. The way they care for and support each other was outstanding. All in all this was a great read!!
I don’t think this book is deserving of the few really low reviews here, and I’m generally a somewhat harsh rater. I hope that the one and two stars don’t deter readers from giving it a chance because I’m pretty sure the majority of PNR fans would enjoy this one. It’s an interesting concept and plot.
I agree with other reviews that say the story fell a bit flat and had some slower parts, but it had more development than a lot of comparable stories in the same genre. I did enjoy it for the most part, however there were a lot of sudden jumps forward in time that threw me off. They weren’t significant jumps, maybe a few days or a week at a time, but it skipped through some of the relationship development so it felt like suddenly everyone was super close without showing us how they got there.
I liked that the author did something a bit different by blending omegaverse with paranormal and adding some unique elements that aren’t common in other omegaverse stories. But at times it did feel like there were too many players.
3.5 stars. I feel like some undefinable thing was missing from this. I liked it. The plot was interesting and full of danger and intrigue. The sex was steamy, but not my personal favorite. The relationships were just ok. The development was a bit off since the plot sort of crept up too fast for them to really settle in. They just sort of fell together without much preamble. Maybe that’s what I was missing.
The characters were ok. I liked them, but we didn’t get much from most of them also because of the plot. Also the timeline and pacing was a bit off too. Large chunks of time seemed to fly by without any indication or explanation, and I feel like those chunks were vital for the story. They could’ve really helped with making me feel like this was more of a complete story.
Like I said. I liked it. It was just a bit too rushed for me. I would’ve enjoyed it more with maybe an extra 100 pages or so with them just building their connections up.
Quinn has been terrorized and abused by her Uncle and Cousins since her mother’s death. Quinn believes herself to be human, but after a horrific experience, finds out that she is more. She meets three Alphas that save her and change her world. But can these three smoking hot Alphas, plus two steamy betas save her, and themselves when serious trouble comes knocking?
Wow! What an amazing story, it is absolutely captivating! The world building and character development are incredible! The storyline is full of action, intrigue, and plenty of steam!
Quinn is an incredible FMC, I love how strong she is. I also adored her men. I love how protective and affectionate they are toward Quinn. I loved how they all came together and how their relationships developed.
I definitely recommend this book and cannot wait for more from this series!
DNF @ 10% 🙄🙄🙄🙄 I was excited for a new omegaverse series, but this one is not for me. I'm not sure what's envisioned for this blended PNR world with A/B/O but the flow and flat characters and bland AF yet "there's just something about her/him" 🙄🙄🙄 Pass. It was a push to get to this point, and I'm tapping out.
The world building is lacking, which is odd for establishing a new series that has a blend of PNR supernaturals and humans and alpha/beta/Omega structure - - I've read omegaverse (shifter and non-shifter) and plenty of PNR and urban fantasy, but each author has their own vision of the world and magic structure and A/B/O structure and societal norms, etc. I'm not sure if it gets built up more as the story goes, but I found it really hard to get into and piece together.
The FMC is super bland and I found myself in a constant state of side-eyeing the FMC like "are you for real right now??" 🙄🙄🙄 There were a lot of things didn't make sense to me, like she's sheltered (due to her family situation) and lacks knowledge of the supernaturals as not covered in her schooling and never around them but also has all of these assumptions about each race 🤔 while also not giving a breakdown of the supernatural races in this world for the reader. She's 25 and in severely abusive situation (that has been going on for a long time, I think it said 15 years?) and thinks she's human and.... 🤷 That's all I can say. She's never been a fighter but also has some inner fight that she's always felt but never let loose because the consequences with her family would be severe punishment that she didn't think was worth the fight 🤔 But then she's away from them for a minute and has a chance to run - and does (OK, yay!) and even severely beaten she's pressing on to reach high traffic downtown area, hoping to encounter the kindness of stranger that she runs into to help her to a hospital and keep her safe from those after her.... And yet the first person she runs into who asks if she's OK, she deflects with "I'm fine, don't worry about me" because he's a vampire 🙄 She feels safe with him and his friends for unknown reasons (not uncommon for omegaverse) and eventually relents. But I'm still stuck on her barely holding herself together with busted face, back and ribs and is acting all prejudice against vampires who she has very little knowledge of and zero experience with 🤷🙄🙄🙄 He of course doesn't take her word for it cause he's so alpha 🙄🙄🙄 OK, I need to stop now 😅
I don't go for omegaverse novels very often but I was captivated just from reading the summary of this book. And I'm freaking stoked that I read it. The sweetness of her harem and how they all treated each other and just were so freaking consistently considerate blew my mind. I do think this was more a.sweet verse than omegaverse since there wasn't really any domination in this. That's probably why I liked it so much. So many omegaverse books put too much emphasis on the alphas need to override the omegas thoughts and demand his will over hers despite knowing its biology that allows him that. Sure not all are like that which are the ones I like but majority are. 😬😬 Anywho got lost in a rant. This was amazing the steam was amazing. The dynamics were amazing and the trials were even amazing. The only thing I'm sad about is that it was a stand alone 😩 I woulda loved to see them work through the safe times and have babies and all that. But when you don't want a book to end I think is a show of its amazingness.
This book is a standalone RH, part of a serie called "The Knottyverse" set in the same world. The worldbuilding is well developped and will be a solid basis for the serie. For me, some part of the book were very boring, especially the middle. The beginning described the FMC, Quinn, and her life, being abused by her uncle and her cousins. Escaping her monstruous family, she discovered that she's an omega and met her fated alphas (yes, alphas with "s" 😉). Then things got a bit lame and slow paced...I lost interest and had to force myself continue the reading. Luckily the end of the book was enjoyable. It was action packed with interesting plot twists! Quite good! Well, I will maybe read the next book of the serie🤔 I will thought about it.

Oh my god, yes! I needed more omegaverse in my life and James has delivered! Origins was a fantastic introduction to this unique supernatural world. I loved Quinn as the main character with a traumatic past. Watching her take control of her life with the help of her mates was just perfect. Origins was steamy and had some intense suspenseful moments. While the story was on the lighter side, be aware of potential triggers (mostly in the beginning). I loved every moment of reading this book and can't wait to see what else this author has planned for this world!
This book was the first book ive read by Jarica James and it will not be the last. I love the world that James has created for the story as well as the dynamic of our group. Her take on the supernatural as well as alpha/omega dynamics is unique and intriguing.
Quinn is a strong Omega with a very traumatic past and is in a bad state when our Alphas find her. Her Alphas along with a couple others make it their task to save and protect her from the horrid things she grew up with while also dealing with other troubles the group faces along the way.
Like expected with Omegaverse stories the steam in this book is great and well written. The steam combined with the group dynamic and interesting plot makes this a story worth reading. I am excited to see the other stories James creates for this world.
New series alert. New series alert. And omg it is a must read. This book in the Knottyverse World. We are meeting Quinn who is a human hybrid Omega. She meets three Alpha men who help her. This book was so amazing I couldn't put it down. You get so much between learning the world and the rules and laws. Quinn and her men already have a battle on their hands. Things are fast paced. I can't wait for more in this world.
Book was very well written and I enjoyed it a lot. Definitely something to read if you are having pack darling hangovers. No m/m. Reverse harem with amazing men that are very protective of our heroin. Some abuse and mention of attempted sexual Assault. ALWAYS read trigger warning
Great story, great characters, good world building. There seems to be room for this to extend to more standalone with the characters that came up in addition to the MCs
Origins was a really good story! The character growth was great and I loved watching Quinn grow past her past and grow stronger. The world building was intense and I liked the suspense and action of too. Wouldn’t mind another book but this was a solid standalone!
I did not finish this book. I started it and loved it! Then I got bored and stopped reading it. I have no desire at this time to go back and finish it.
I enjoyed this book. Things moved along at a nice pace, and I didn’t feel that any of the writing was filler. There were some small bits that felt a little abrupt, but didn’t take away from the story.
I love omegaverse, and I was super intrigued by the concept of this mix of typical omegaverse concepts and other supernatural beings. I love reverse harems, but more often than not the different H's are not fleshed out enough individually to have distinct personalities, and sadly that was the case with this book.
Besides this there were other issues I had with the pacing and the general worldbuilding. I dont mind if certain aspects of the world are not explained in detail or left to the readers' imagination, but one big thing I was missing was more info on the main character's background. I was super confused that by the end of the book, we never really got a proper explanation as to why she was with her uncle/the circumstances leading her there, and with all the fuss about her powers and her being a mostly human omega I thought her family background would definitely be discussed. I dont technically mind that this background wasn't revealed, but what bothered me about it was that noone, not a single one of her men, had questions about that.
Another example of things that bothered me was the pacing and consistency of the story - e.g., at the beginning they are all facing super heavy backlash for their inter-species relationship/pack, and at the end it feels like everyone is just okay with it - maybe not society at large, but through that elder POV it seemed as if their relationship was no big deal, and that felt weirdly contrary to what we learned about the world until then.
With the way the book was written, and especially that weirdly out of place elder POV at the end, I was convinced this was book one of a series and that we'd get more information (and character/relationship development) in a sequel. I was truly surprised when I finished reading and realized this was a standalone, although it did explain why the entire plot felt so rushed. I think I would have really enjoyed this as a series with more of a focus on the characters themselves, but as a standalone it unfortunately really fell flat.
Rating- 3 Good Heat- 3 some scenes Tropes- omegaverse, human doesn’t know what she is, forming a pack, fated mates, h abused by family
Jarica James introduces us to a more unique omegaverse with the Knottyverse. Shifter and non-shifter omegaverse are both common, but James mixes it up by having Alphas, Betas, and Omegas be part of all supernatural creatures. Furthmore, our heroine matches to several different species forming a mixed pack.
When characters who believe they are human learn otherwise, they often lean towards stubbornness at the face of all logic or accepting it way to quickly. Here the h walks the perfect line. She is skeptical until she thinks through the facts.
So, I started this book not in the common way, I normally did with the most. Because first off I saw the mixed reviews on this one. And for me that's is a sign to look closer and keep in mind some aspects during the read. But I began reading the reviews first. Not all, but a few. And not careful, only superficial and the ones without major spoilers. Only to get a gist, what the issues are in general.
Of course, every review is it's own opinion. When you read my reviews of other books, you will see I'm mostly more tolerant to things, others wouldn't ignore. Like misspellings. Because for me an author is a human, and humans are bound to not be perfect. We aren't machines and a mistake is humanly. So are proofreaders and so on. That's why I don't took that in the rating, as long as I am able understand what I read. And the other is, that an author never can please everybody. That's just not possible. So, books are bound to have some bad reviews, because it doesn't meet to the taste of all.
So, that another point I keep in mind. Because I know, I will find things, I don't like.
But enough explaining and so on. The book isn't perfect. There are some mistakes, but it's nothing that really disturbed me during the read. The premise of the story is interesting and promising. I'm a blurb person. And I'm an avid Omegaverse and RH reader, too.
I liked the book. Of course, I'm not a huge fan of abuse and permanent anxiety. But such books built things up, and end with the bad guys - mostly satisfying - punished. It was interesting, too, to see a book where all the species have the same biology. Mostly it's only the wolves who have knots. Or the others have different anatomy, but in the core do the same thing. Like the bonding. The wolves do it with bites, and witches with some kind of magic branding marks. But it fullfills the same purpose.
But it isn't often where there isn't much difference, except for the abilities and looks, between the different races. I only remember one book about witches/warlocks within a Omegaverse setting. (But it wasn't RH, and there weren't any other supes mentioned. And the magic had a bigger role in the fated mate setting. But that's only BTW). Plus, this book has a knowing human environment, too.
I don't like it, that the world building wasn't mentioned as much as I wished. Sure, we get the gist. And that humans and supernaturals don't cross lines. And if they do, then only on the fringes. But I wanted to know so much more. And there are parts, that are written like facts a reader should know what it is about. But even that, wasn't that bad for me.
What I didn't like was that there are many loose ends. We heard about Quinns upbringing, and that she never leaves the house, because her family wouldn't let her. But than again, how is it possible that she isn't a virgin? She said that she had possibilities to meet with others. And yet again, she hadn't had any way to ask for help? And no one ever saw her injuries? I don't even understand, why she even ended up with her uncle. It's hard to believe. Then the fact that she is 25, and stayed there this long. The most people are adults at 18, or at least, 21. During the beginning she repeats that is only a few weeks. And then what? She never explained what she planned on doing. And why she waited. I mean, I get it. She is afraid of them and fled once, only to be found again and brought back. And I know that emotions, especially fright, have a way to make unlogical decisions. But that aspect makes no sense.
And then she is rescued by the guys, only to go back willingly to the abuser to be hurt again, just after she was healed, knew she isn't a entirely human and a for once was safe. That was frustrating. And I don't really get, too, the unhealthy obsession of the uncle. I mean, why did he need her and just can't let her go? Yeah, I know abusers love the power. But in that way, it don't makes really sense. What was it about her mother? We didn't get much on that front either. So, I only know, her mother loved her and she liked to read Alice in Wonderland to her daughter. But it never onces was mentioned what happened with her. And who was her father.
The end wasn't as satisfying, as I hoped it will be. Sure, her uncle got what was expected. But her cousins apparently didn't? They were only in the story in the beginning, but then just disappeared. And the High Priestess and Maxon's father get there punishment too. But why go through with all the ordeals, only to leave the place in the end to start somewhere new. And they didn't give the people a chance to proof that they have changed. They just said nothing keeps us here anymore, let's leave. That was the case from the start. They just could have leave from the beginning. Nothing of that would have happened. The only downside would have been, that the shitty persons were still in a power position. But there wouldn't be pointless deads. And I didn't see much "powerful" anything.
So, the end was anticlimatic. The elders seem to be understanding, though I don't know why there has to be a POV on that front. But yet again. It was all for nothing, because Quinn and her men didn't believe in anything and just left. How can there be change, when the people aren't confronted with it?
Overall, I liked it. As I said. But I can't ignore all that, what was wrong. It's a standalone. And yeah I get it, that therefore it was rushed. But better make it a duet or triology, as to write something that leaves questions or ruin the experience. Like the intimacy between the characters and the sexy scenes. It wasn't the worst I have read, and some aspects were cute, but it lacked in many ways. And that is a pity. Because it really has good ideas. I probably will read the next book in that universe. In hopes the author may take into account what the readers said and make it better.
I give it 3.5 stars, round it to 4 with a lot of goodwill, because I really still liked it. And luckily, my rating system start from 3 to 5 stars.
I’m loving the light omega reads I’ve been finding and I really enjoyed this one. I enjoyed the characters and that it was a standalone means no waiting for more. Tho I wish I could get more of these characters.
A different view of an omegaverse, like a omegaverse supernatural edition. Loved the story, no cliffhanger, I got sucked into it. Can't wait to read more in the series.
I was unsure about this book but .... and have few questions, but first, my review 😉.
This book really wasn't bad, I enjoyed the twist which you don't see in the Omegaverse but it felt rush because it's a standalone, I guess. I would have to see more of Quinn's magic or get a glimpse of her life before her uncle, but no such luck. It also didn't follow any sort of prophecy storyline but it wasn't a bad read.
I would say, leave your opinions at the book cover and just enjoy the show.
And now, my questions; 1. Why a wolf and witch beta? Why didn't we see a vampire beta? 2. Why didn't we get more pages around the vampire? It felt like the vamps were a necessary addition but was decided to be talked about in passing. 3. Why the mention of dragons but we never got more on that piece of information. 4. Why didn't we get to know what happened to her cousins? 5. Why didn't Quinn magic grow?
We really have unanswered questions and I hope the next series answered a bit.
For someone who had a hard start in life, Quinn sure hits the jackpot in this book.
While on the run from her abusive family, she runs into a witch, werewolf and vampire, the latter who recognizes her from meeting her in the café where she works and also set off her omega presentation. All three of them recognize her as being a scent match and have to learn to work together in a world where their species are separated. There are some great Alpha cinnamon roll moments as they are very caring to her. Even better is when she discovers her Betas as, in this world, packs require Betas to help keep balance (not going to mention them here as it's more fun to discover who they are as you read).
This is one of my first OV reads that actually contains shifters and I really enjoyed it. The lore of the world is interesting and the Alphas and Betas in Quinn's pack are *chef's kiss*.
The basic premise of the story is good - I enjoy a story that has a mix of paranormals, an FMC that is soft and sassy, possessive alphas, knots, some angst, and suspense in the background.
However, as the story developed, I started feeling that there were gaps within the storyline for me. The end was incomplete for me and not what I hoped for this coven. I enjoy omegaverse, and Quinn is such a sweet, soft, yet emotionally strong FMC, but there are too many unanswered questions about her backstory and the threat of their supposedly powerful coven to the supernatural world, too little relationship development, the backstory of how the 3 alphas know each so well, and what is that burst of magic she displays but doesn't get really explored.
