Five years ago on Halloween, Jake Harmon’s partner, Dylan, perished when he wrapped his car around a steadfast maple tree. Each year, Jake makes a week-long pilgrimage to Dylan’s hometown of Port Timothy, Maine, hoping to ease some of the pain.

On his fifth annual trip, Jake finds his bed and breakfast host, Patrick O’Hare, impossibly attractive, and, in some ways, disquietingly familiar. As the week unfolds, secrets emerge, ghosts appear, and stories are told leading up to a fateful Halloween night.

This book is good and contains paranormal and romance. It is a good read that leaves you feeling good at the end. Jake’s partner, Dylan, died five years ago in an automobile accident. Every year around Halloween he goes back to Port Timothy as a tribute to Dylan. But the new trip is different. He meets Patrick, the owner of the B&B where he is staying. Both men become very comfortable with each other in a short amount of time. But they are not sure. So they need a little push in the right direction from some ghosts in order for the two to realize how happy they can be with each other and to avoid tragedy.

This was a nice ghost story set around Halloween but I wasn't expecting it to be as sad as it turned out to be. I think I was looking for something just a bit different, a really good read though.

A short novella about moving on, with help from your ghostly boyfriend

Jake has seen Dylan's ghost ever since he died, and it seems that Dylan is working behind the scenes to help Jake move on. Jake's yearly Halloween pilgrimage to his late boyfriend's hometown leads him to meeting Patrick and the attraction between them is immediate.
Patrick has had his own brush with death, and his aunt Sarah seems to also have an affinity with the paranormal. There is a connection between the two men that neither is aware of, and that seems to also be steering them in the right direction.
The story is short and sweet and well-written but I wanted more interaction and connection between Jake and Patrick. There were also questions left unanswered for me, and I just expected and wanted something else, though I'm not sure what. I will definitely seek out more of Declan's books, though, as I liked his writing style.

So reading the blurb for this one I went into it expecting what it suggests. A ghostly Halloween Romance. It had all the makings of a good story but it didn’t quite lift off the page for me. It started off well but then it just seemed to amble on into directions that didn’t set the tone in the way that I expected.

The premise starts of good. Jake lost his partner five years ago and since which has travelled down to his home town to relive his memory. The drive down has a few flashbacks to their first visit there which is fine and sets down the connection of him and Dylan, his passed partner. But ultimately since I knew the story was about Jake and Patrick it felt like it lasted a bit too long. I knew what the author was trying to do but seeing as the real memories or connection were in the town I would’ve felt more connected to Jake and Dylan had these memories been trigged as he did things that he used to do with Dylan once he had arrived at the town.

A good example of this not working was when he bumps into a tour guide, that Jake doesn’t even remember, and then the guide tells a story about Dylan and his father from back when Dylan was a boy. And although this was a nice anecdote about Dylan, it wasn’t a connection between a living love, Jake, and a passed one that directly connected them to the present day. So I couldn’t directly associate it with Dylan and Jake as a couple. Seeing as he is travelling back to relive memories and is trying to let go, or even struggling and refusing to let go more triggering things like sitting at their favourite spot by the ocean, or doing things alone that they used to do together and having flashbacks of those times would’ve established their connection more. A good example of this done right was him going to the same ice cream parlour that they went to. Which, if I remember correctly, happened shortly after this thing with the guide. Now that I could’ve used a lot more of.

Then there’s patrick. So much about how he carries on is odd. How is he touching someone on the face, asking them if they are okay, and all up in the personal space of a complete stranger? It’s safe to say I was triggered by this. And this was very early on in the story. My biggest problem here was I had to reread it a few times and I still couldn’t find the signals of Jake being off enough to require being asked if he was alright, let alone having some strange man caressing his cheek. Jake not reacting badly and telling him to step back also seemed odd. My feelings on this were later confirmed when his own best friend mentions how he is always violating personal space. Even the side characters think this is odd.

Also there’s the other bit about the lamp. After this whole thing about them being twin lamps and Jake’s aunt has one the normal human reaction would’ve been to say “I wonder if that’s the lamp my aunt sent to her friend or if it’s just some coincidence it ended up with you” to which jake would’ve been like well that would be cool. And, him being a writer, could’ve joked about it being destiny and he couldn’t have written it better especially since he writes horror and not romance. It would’ve been a very normal and relatable conversation where people find random things about themselves that are in common or join them together and speculate if it is indeed coincidence or something more.

So he goes to his aunt and there’s a lot going on with the side characters and his aunt and I’m waiting for Patrick to come out with it. I mean there’s some talk about it but he doesn’t outright ask what was the name of the friend she gave the second lamp too. Which, for most people, would’ve been the first thing on the agenda to find out if it is indeed the same lamp. But nope. I was so ready for him to go back to Jake like you won’t believe it, your aunt is that same friend. Isn’t that great! It seemed really odd not to tackle such a good plot point and all the avenues in which this could be used to bring the two main characters together.

There were just too many good ways considering the set-up of this story and the framework it exists in that could’ve played out but it just didn’t happen in any of those avenues. Without a real feeling of ghostly things happening, not enough balance of Jake connecting to Dylan and trying to move on to Patrick at the same time, and with Patrick using the overused ‘but they are my client’ trope and finding something more substantial and using the information he learned about Jake to propel them forward, this story just didn’t lift for me so I stepped out about halfway through. It might be a good fit for others but for me, it just couldn’t hold my interest unfortunately which is a shame because I was so ready for a ghostly, slightly deeper, romance based on what the blurb suggested/promised. Reunion is in the title after all and that whole aspect of what this story is about just didn’t play out fast enough for me.

An interesting concept for a short story! Set around Halloween, it featured death and ghosts and grief and miracles, but never really quite explained whether the mysterious goings on were actually meant to be real or not. There were also some connections raised between the characters that were never properly addressed. So, some questions left unanswered at the end, but an enjoyable enough story all the same, even if it's not what I usually read.

This was my first Declan Rhodes story and probably my last. The writing was scattershot and oft confusing. The coincidences were so numerous and over the top that they catapulted me out of the story. The characters made such odd, odd choices that I found them impossible to believe or root for. All in all a thumbs down.

A Story to Love . . .

Jake Harmon’s partner, Dylan, died in an auto accident on Halloween 5 years ago. As his way of honoring his love, Jake returns to Dylan’s hometown of Port Timothy. He feels Dylan’s spirit near him as he makes the annual drive. Jake’s friend, Kyle, is on the speaker and tried to give him a gentle nudge that it may be time to move on. But it was still not the right time for Jake. The motel he usually stayed at was closed for renovations, so he was staying at a B&B this time. The owner, Patrick O’Hare, almost immediately comforts him and the feeling of familiarity warmed him. When Patrick touched his face, in the same way Dylan always did, he felt a shiver.

Patrick went out to dinner with a friend while Jake unpacked. Jake heard voices downstairs and found the TV on and tuned to Dylan’s favorite cooking show. Back upstairs, he found a Buzz Lightyear toy in the closet just like the one he had lost long ago. Then he waited for Patrick to get home – safely.

The two of them continue to feel the odd attraction to each other, that familiarity. But they are tentative and will need that nudge in the right direction from some resident ghosts. Will Patrick and Jake realize what they can have with each other? Will Jake see that it’s what Dylan wants for him? Halloween is coming. Soon it will be time for Jake to leave, unless . . .

This was such a well-written story about an author of horror stories and a man who had so many things in common with him. The story line was excellent, the pacing easy to read, and the characters easy to care about. There will be emotions to be felt, and the author will allow you to feel them. But you are in good hands. Grab your copy and share this terrific story.

His lover died from an auto accident, and as a ghost, blessed a new union

The range of Declan Rhodes' writing is wide and deep. In this Halloween story, Jake Harmon's partner, Dylan, died in a car accident. Jake continues to mourn five years later, especially as he makes a pilgrimage to Dylan's hometown of Port Timothy, Maine. It is there he finds some peace, and this time, he meets the striking Patrick O'Hare, the operator of the short-stay home where he's staying.

Patrick usually just leaves the guests alone, neither cooking for them nor being around the home while they are there. But for Jake, a connection is made, and Patrick volunteers to cook for him and show him around. Patrick is busy volunteering at the senior home and visiting those who matter to him.

Over time, Jake receives messages that lead him to Patrick and the appearance of Dylan's ghost, which seems to encourage Jake to be with Patrick. It is a charming love story, with unsettling connections between the two men, including a visit from Dylan's ghost.

The story is well-told, with characters revealed through their deep histories and personalities, making for a great read. The writing has spice, and, as is usual with a Declan Rhodes book, contains details that are both informative and that advance the story. Be prepared for ghosts to appear, as they have many roles in the happily ever after for Patrick and Jake.

🎃Messages from the other side to mend a 💔broken heart?!👻👻.

3.5🌟 stars
The supernatural element to this story was interesting and perfectly timed for a pre-Halloween release. There's tragic loss and continuing grief but with a twist. I liked the idea of loved ones orchestrating things from the grave and attempting to get horror writer Jake to move on after five years of mourning his beloved Dylan's death. And I also liked the way links between Patrick and Jake even before they set eyes on each other are slowly revealed. Unfortunately I just did not find the Jake-Patrick romance very compelling. Maybe it was the brevity of the story and the amount of time the two leads spent apart from each other.

I read a complimentary advance copy of the story; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

I really, really, really loved this story. Jake is embarking on his annual anniversary visit to his deceased fiance, Dylan's home town, Port Timothy. He lives and works in Manhattan, so Maine is an amazing respite. His bf, Kyle is with him on the phone and tries to help him understand it may be time and okay, to move on. Jake is a horror story writer and his imagination is fertile, but sound. He meets Patrick, owner of the B&B he stays at for the duration. Patrick, shares his thoughts with Kevin, his bf. Jake's reflections of Dylan are romantic and sweet. Patrick's willingness to listen is solid. The friends and family make the story that much sweeter. The relationships among all were soothing and fun.there are several twists and revelations worthy of a mystery horrir story. I wish it was longer and we could travel down the road with them. Well done.

Reunion is surprisingly serious for what I expected to be a fun Halloween novella. Don't get me wrong, it is a fun and engaging story, but Jake's grief was emotional for me. I can certainly relate to his pain and the need to revisit places with happier memories. But don't think this is all a big tear-jerker because it's not. Those more serious moments are tempered with wit, a bit of romance, and some meddling loved ones from beyond the grave. The ghosts and the reason for the meddling is what this one is really all about, and since this is a novella, I won't give any more spoilers. Suffice it to say, this is an entertaining romance just in time for the season. and true-to-form, Declan Rhodes gives us characters we can like and root for.

This is sad, sweet and entertaining. Jake's true love was killed in a car accident, but Jake isn't ready to move on from Dylan. Going to Dylan's hometown for Halloween, their favorite holiday, is Jake's way of staying close to Dylan. When he gets to the B&B, he meets Patrick, the owner, and there's something about him that puts Jake at ease. Patrick has the feeling that he knows Jake, but has no idea how. As Jake and Patrick spend more time together, Jake wonders if it's time to leave Dylan in the past, and Patrick learns some things about Jake's past. I loved the storyline, it was intriguing and sweet.

'Reunion' written by Declan Rhodes

I bought the paperback; it's a slim volume.

I liked the premise of this book, but ended up being disappointed due to random bits of the storyline that were left dangling here and there and not being followed through with, leaving me with a feeling of confusion.

Also: some Red Flags:
1). if I'd rented a room for a certain amount of time and been told the owners would be elsewhere and I'd have the place to myself for Halloween, only to discover the owner was actually staying there, in a room right across the hall from mine, that's rather... odd.

2). and then to have that owner, a man you've just finished meeting, immediately step into your personal space and caress your cheek? Oh hell no!
(and it happened more than once!)
Me? I would have told that guy to "Step off! Back the fuck up!" And left to find another place to stay. But then this story would not get told, lol. (there turns out to be a reason, albeit a bit far-fetched)

I mean, you can have your ghost story and still be somewhat realistic, too. Too many things in this tale that just didn't come together or make sense in the end. Loose ends.

Oh, and having Patrick (the owner) watch Jake (the guest) while he was sleeping (naked). Hell no to the nth degree... major creepy! Maybe that was the point?
This didn't come across as a love story...at this point it seemed more akin to the Bates Motel and Psycho!

3). I didn't sense any particular attraction between them, not really. They were just saying it was so, but seeming actually really be based on another person's attraction/feelings, so that would have been another "red flag" had I been that writer character.

Lots of missed connections and information regarding the Tiffany lamps, the connections between the sisters and those between the elderly friends. It would have been easy for both MCs to ask a real live person who KNEW the story of the two lamps, yeah, to ASK about those stories!

And what was the deal with that old boat captain? How did his tale fit into all this? Other than establish a random event that happened in Jake's childhood, what was the purpose of this side story?

Seems like quite a few missed opportunities for further information...(just sayin').

This whole storyline seemed dis-jointed and unbelievable, as to the way it played out!

I don't know, seems like too much was missing, too many gaps in this tale!

Declan Rhodes can be a decent writer, (I've read several of his other books that were great) but this particular storyline felt kind of half-done, uncompleted; it missed the mark for me. Too many holes in the storyline.
This was also a "Halloween special" novella, and a very short read. Sorry, this book just didn't fly for me, wanted more...

A nice story

Jake lost the love of his life on Halloween 5 years ago. He returns to Dylan’s hometown on for the holiday every year. This year, he stays at a B&B that feels an awful lot like home. And the owner, Patrick, seems familiar and like an old friend. Patrick himself was in a bad accident, but he came back from the brink. These two feel a connection that just can’t be denied. A sweet little Halloween story of finding love after loss and moving on, with a little help from the other side.

I loved this book! Halloween is my favorite holiday, but I rarely find good Halloween romances. This one was perfect. It had great characters, romance, and an element of paranormal with the help of a special ghost. <3 This book does have a lot of emotion, as Jake can't bring himself to move on after losing his boyfriend Dylan five years prior. Every year on the anniversary of his death, he travels to Dylan's hometown. This year, he finds himself drawn to and attracted to the host of the bed and breakfast he's staying in. A sweet romance. I recommend picking this one up. 5 stars.

Not the usual Halloween story---this is so much more.
Poetic fate shows itself in this Patrick/Jake dance. Family ties from many years ago come out to play
with these two men's present days. Death is not always the end but sometimes tie two present souls
together in the now. All each man needs to do is accept what Fate is offering to get their much
deserved HEA. Mr. Rhodes has a winner here. I got an ARC of this story via Prolificworks for my honest review.

Jake is a horror author every year near Halloween he goes back to his deceased boyfriends home town to remember and he’s hoping to see Dylan’s ghost. This story made me sad it hurt my heart for what Jake went through, Jake is renting a room in a mansion and that’s where he meets Patrick Jake feels like he has known this man for a long time. There is so much more going on in this fantastic story I loved it and I highly recommend this book it’s well worth the read.

This one felt like a perfect treat for the season. Jake was a man that loved deeply and completely. Moving on after the death of Dylan was going to take a long time and five years later he's still holding on to his memory. Patrick personifies kindness. He gives of his time; giving an empathetic ear and a gentle touch to those in need. The attraction is instant but Jake needed help; he got it from a ghostly Dylan and more than one meddling little old lady, both living and not so much.

Great ghost story, perfect ending

This is a great story of love which lives on ties three people together. Jake and Patrick make a lovely couple and the back story with Dylan and the coastal Maine details really pull the story together. There were some predictable bits but also a couple of twists I didn’t foresee. I continue Declan Rhodes/Grant Holland books and this is another great one.

This book belongs to a genre of its own: MM+ ghostly M, because Dylan’s presence and interaction with Jake is the cornerstone of this story of lost love, of overcoming grief and of giving the future a second chance.

Perfect for an autumn afternoon when you need a ghostly story with a hint of magic that cheers you up rather than scares you.

I thought this was a suitable Halloween story but I agree with another of your reviewers that it much more than a Halloween story. It was a story of loss and healing with maybe a little ghostly help/ It was sad also but I was glad to see Jake and Patrick get their HEA. Recommend reading.

This was a perfect book for the Halloween season...or any time actually. It was sad. It was funny. There was mystery. The characters were engaging and the plot satisfying...especially the ending. A perfect romance for the 'colder' times of the year.

I was drawn in right away by the premise of this book, and I found the way Jake's grief was handled very poignant; the descriptions of him revisiting places that were significant to Dylan or that he and Dylan had visited together were really sweet. I also loved the idea of Dylan's ghost watching Jake, comforting him, and wanting him to get together with Patrick. His relationship with Patrick developed too quickly for me to really get into it, though, and I didn't feel like the chapters from Patrick's point of view really added anything--in fact, Patrick was kind of pushy at times, and I didn't particularly like him. There were also some weird plot holes, or at least things left unexplained, and overall it felt like it needed to be fleshed out further for the concept to really work.
