Fiction Atlas always puts together a top notch anthology with authors that fit the dynamic just right. All of the short stories are amazing dark romances and retellings of the beings we want to believe live beneath. Highly recommend for bite size stories or an all day binge read.

Review for Velantiir Lost City of the Ancients by Melissa A. Joy.

The story follows a young and dashing Pirate captain and his crew as they sail to a long-abandoned city in search of loot and adventure. The story does a great job of providing fuel for the imagination easily bringing images to mind of the perilous voyage to the city and of the city itself. The story provides a strong cast of characters alongside the great location, with differing agendas that keep the story engaging. The pace is good for the stories length and provides a satisfying read.

The story is linked to the authors other work but is a fully stand-alone story not needing anything from the other books to be enjoyed in its own right and does provide a nice steeping stone into the authors other work.

I loved 95% of these stories (2 I didn't read due to disinterest with their specific genre), several were a variation on the Ariel theme and mostly but not all about mermaids and mermen. Brown's and Lane's selkie-vampire story, Collins' steampunk leviathan tale, Parrish's take on The Tempest with an alternate ending to the Bard's and Carter & Mason's quick-paced action adventure where a siren, a hellhound and an Egyptian god team up to reap souls were memorable. Matt's Fishing Trip story had me in splits - a reverse Nemo story of monkey-human-hybrid-turned-merman searching for Hell Bent, a city where DNA experimenting labs are a stone's throw from each other and magic is just a wearied hobby.

Review for Valantiir, City of the Ancients by Melissa A. Joy

Action-packed, entertaining, and magical. Melissa weaves an interesting story featuring wonderful characters from her main saga Keys of the Origin: The Scions of Balance; Book 1.—like Larkh, the protagonist of this tale. A young, charming pirate captain who's searching for a mysterious artifact. You'll find epic sea battles, banter, dragons, and a beautiful lost city shrouded in enigma and melancholy in this short story. A perfect taste of the beautiful world of Aeldynn that will leave you wanting more.

"Black's Lair" by Rosa Marchisella was a really well done pirate story, I don't think there was a weak story in the series. The characters were great and I enjoyed reading it.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

"Sea Start"by Emma Shelford is a unique take on sirens and a great crime story, I enjoyed the characters and that it had a suspenseful atmosphere. I can't wait to read more from the author.

"Siren's Revenge" by Sabetha Danes is a wonderfully done siren story, I was drawn in by the synopsis and am glad I read this story. The story was well done and I enjoyed getting to know Queen Codelia.

I love anthologies and this is a water themed one. So far I have read a few books and thought they were fun to read. Some were a quick read and some a bit longer.

Sea Start by Emma Shelford was entertaining as Lune is introduced and has to make a run for it. The story was quick yet a bit entertaining as we watch what she must go through on the run. Works a a great prequel to a story that I really want to read what happens next.

Black's Lair by Rosa Marchisella is a great little story where most of the main characters are not young. It was a bit dark yet fun at the same time as it deals with pirates and a hidden treasure. It just made me laugh and had a few surprises in it too. Just a good story.

Death Song by LB Carter and LeAnn Mason
Jess is ready to let loose and have some fun on vacation. Stone was just looking for a quick distraction. Jess just can't seem to escape Death tho, when work interrupts her vacation.
I love the Harbingers series and really enjoyed this short glimpse into Jess's past.
Just one of the stories in this anthology that I had the privilege to read, I can't wait to dive into the rest of these stories!!

This review is for Death Song by L.B. Carter & LeAnn Mason.

Death Song is a short, fast read about our favorite siren, Jessica. Jess is on a much needed vacation but soon realizes there is never a way to escape death.
I really enjoyed this prequel and if you love sirens, hellhounds and other harbingers of death you should check out this short story!

A wonderful chapter in the life of Jessica, a siren. I loved the interaction between herself and Stone, a hellhound. I found this book just a tad to short from what I normally read. It’s very well written and the cover is absolutely stunning.

Great book! Quick fun read! Well-developed story line and characters. It pulled me in from beginning to end and held my attention. The world building is detailed and imaginative. Dark fantasy but humorous at times. Great read! I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Death Song
From the Deep Anthology

Jessica is a siren. She works with a team called the Harbingers of Death Prison Unit. A siren always looks good, it’s part of her job and makes it easier to help the recently deceased across the veil. This has been a long mission. It is hard to lose someone you could have loved. Jess has a rule never to date colleagues. It gets lonely when death is a large part of your life/job. Time for a little vacation.

Stone is a Hellhound shifter. He works as part of a team of Harbingers of Death Water Unit. He lost his love and only finds relief from his work reaping souls when he has time off. He enjoys club music, dancing and one-night stands.

Jess and Stone meet in a club, perhaps this could be something fun. Dancing and playing with another supernatural sounds perfect. Stone takes her to his boat where he lives with his team for a romp. Sadly, both are pressed into service as their time and talents are needed. What could have been, might have been has to be put on hold.

Intriguing Harbingers of Death. I want to know more about the dynamics of the teams. What makes a good team? How many Units are there? I want to know more. I engaged with the characters right away and I could not put the book down. I look forward to learning more about the Harbingers!

Death Song a prequel by LB Carter and Leanne Mason
I’ll admit that Jessica was probably my least favorite character of the Harbingers series. This prequel lets you get a glimpse into her mind, and what makes her tick. Thus making her a much more likable character, in my opinion. Like the rest of the series, the whole “harbingers of death” storyline is quite interesting. My only complaint is the ending left me feeling a bit unsatisfied. I felt that maybe at least one more chapter could have helped. Of course I always want more. Lol

This is a review for “Death Song” by LeAnn Mason and L.B. Carter. This was a great short story with two fascinating characters. As I was familiar with these characters from other books, I enjoyed getting to know a background story of Stone and Jessica. Their banter was so fun to read, and their adventure together was well written and added much to their characters. Thank you, LeAnn, and L.B. for this story.
I look forward to reading many other amazing stories of the sea through “From The Deep: A Fiction-Atlas Press Anthology”.

With mermaids, sea gods, ancient underwater cities, magical creatures, and swashbuckling pirates, each story balances adventure, wonder, and danger. The collection excels at transporting readers into richly imagined underwater worlds while exploring the intrigue and peril of the deep. This anthology is a must-read for fans of fantasy, adventure, and myth-inspired storytelling.

Death Song by L.B Carter and LeAnn Mason

I loved that these authors gave us this short story. Jessica is one of my favorites. She makes it so hard for you not to love her. She’s a siren but she has a heart. She’s sassy, confident, tough, and funny. I love that we see a different side of her. As always this novella was wonderfully written and flowed so well.

Death Song review Leann Mason and L.B. Carter

This prequel was short and sweet. No worries if you don't know anything about the Harbingers I am 100% confident you will want to pick up the rest of the series for Jess. Worth the read. Working on the other books now. I love anthologies.

Fab mer lore but a tad too many prequels

General feel of the entire set: a bit too many prequels, but I did find me a couple of new fave authors to stalk - Margo Collins, L.B.Carter and K.Matt.

Recommended for lovers of strange and unusual mer stories and those looking for new series to binge read based on fab prequels.

Courtney Cannon’s In Waters Dark & Deep - Evander&Karis’ prequel seems like a lead-on to an enemies to lovers Little Mermaid - that I can’t wait to read now!!

Margo Collins Of Love & Leviathans - super creepy and lovely urban futuristic Leviathan tale - still have the chills from that ending, yikes!

JC Brown & Lena Lane The Selkie’s keeper - I noted it down as a haunting selkie-vamp story, but can’t remember the deets 1 month later, tbh.

Kat Parrish Island of Magic - a take on The Tempest with a whimsical prequel and an alternate ending to the Bard’s original version, recommend if you love Shakespear with a twist.

L.B.Carter & Leann Mason Death Song - a siren, a hellhound and an Egyptian god teaming up to reap souls - yes, please! Loved Jessica & can’t wait for her to re-meet Stone & will look up Harbingers of Death, bring them on!!! Will be following those authors for sure.

L.J.Wynn The Briny Deep - Lake Michigan and the Great Lakes turning salty cpurtesy of Daevrey Junnes aka Davey Jones. This one was a quirky reverse Ariel story or rather the story of the next generation - a prequel that piqued my interest to read the main book.

Sabetha Danes Siren’s Revenge - edge of the seat full start-to-finish-no-sequel story without cliffhangers, thank uou!

K.Matt one strange fishing trip - hilarious reverse Nemo story of monkey-human-hybrid-turned-merman searching for home & Hell Bent city where magic is just a weird hobby and DNA-experimenting labs are a stone’s throw from each other. Loved the quirky humour!

Marchisella Black’s Lair - an enjoyable pirate loot story.

Anthea Sharp The Sea King’s Daughter - rendition of Little Mermaid with an Irish twist & a HEA, loved!

This is my first time reading about sirens so I had no idea what to expect. I loved it! The characters where interesting and I wanted to keep getting to know them more. A little bit of romance, mystery and excitement all in one short is hard to achieve cohesively but the author did it! The beautiful romance was so natural with none of the “look! I added an LGBT character” flashiness so many authors feel the need for. It was very refreshing.

Only read Death Song so far. So much happens in this short story. Immediately fell in love with the main character and hope there is more to this story line because I want a happy love ending! Also loved the new twist on the "dark" creatures and their real work in the world. Cannot wait to read more!
