How to Survive Your Murder

Rate this book
Alice Lawrence is the sole witness in her sister’s murder trial.

And in the year since Claire’s death, Alice’s life has completely fallen apart. Her parents have gotten divorced, she’s moved into an apartment that smells like bologna, and she is being forced to face her sister’s killer and a courtroom full of people who doubt what she saw in the corn maze a year prior.

Claire was an all-American girl, beautiful and bubbly, and a theater star. Alice was a nerd who dreamed of becoming a forensic pathologist and would rather stay at home to watch her favorite horror movies than party. Despite their differences, they were bonded by sisterhood and were each other’s best friends.

Until Claire was taken away from her.

On the first day of the murder trial, as Alice prepares to give her testimony, she is knocked out by a Sidney Prescott look-alike in the courthouse bathroom. When she wakes up, it is Halloween night a year earlier, the same day Claire was murdered. Alice has until midnight to save her sister and find the real killer before he claims another victim.

Fun slasher with a time travel twist. Lots of references to horror movies. You might figure out whodunnit before the big reveal, but the very end could catch you out!

AHHHHHH I DIDN’T SEE THAT ENDING COMING AT ALL?!?!?! Omg… This was such a fast paced and wild ride and as a giant fan of the Scream movies I loved every second of it! The homage to Sidney Prescott was elite.🙏🏻❤️ I was stressed, my heart was racing and then my jaw dropped at the reveal and final act twist. All perfect ingredients for a great slasher!

There were parts of this that were adrenaline filled, cult classic horror vibes🫣 and the in between was some teenage outcast flirty stuff. All of that was okay… 👍 but it had sprinkles of unnecessarily forced current political justice stuff, that wasn’t relevant in any way to the plot or story and felt very planted, almost like it was thrown in after the story was written. 🙄

A book for people who loved Scream and Happy Death Day? I thought this would basically be written FOR me. (Is anyone else declaring it Halloween already?) And, while it did not have nearly as much of the comedy/meta commentary element present in Scream or Happy Death Day, How to Survive Your Murder did keep me up until 6 am to finish it.

Then, sadly, I read the ending, which is TRASH. There is no conclusion to any of the major plot points, despite the fact that this is supposed to be a standalone. Even after sleeping on it for 7 hours, I’m still mad about about it. If there is a sequel, I would be fine with it and give a couple of stars back. But given this is advertised as a standalone, I just cannot say it was a good book. The last three pages really did not work for me so long as there is no follow up to actually create and ending instead of the biggest cop out ending since Lost (or so I’ve heard—I’ve never actually watch Lost because I’ve heard so many people complain about the ending).

This book is good for a few thrills and it does really bring the horror and gore elements of a slasher. But if you want any kind of conclusion to your stories or really any explanation of the events AT ALL, probably don’t pick this up, unfortunately. If the author had taken the time to write a real ending that actually wrapped up this story, this could have been a four star review. As things stand, I simply cannot comprehend the number of five star reviews for this book on Goodreads.

the fact that the cover has a kylie cosmetics liquid lipstick and glitter cat ears (despite being published in 2022) is all you need to know about this book

This was such an entertaining young adult horror novel. Some YA books reads young, but this one definitely has some all ages appeal.

Despite writing books for teenagers, this author does hold back. This book had some biting and gruesome moments.

Also loved that the story had so many meta and self aware horror elements. This book was topical and unapologetic.

My main criticism of YA is usually the obligatory romance. While there was a "bad boy" love interest in this one, I appreciated that it actually fit into the plot.

I would recommend this one to any horror readers who are open to reading young adult. This is easily one of the best YA new releases of 2022.

Disclaimer I received a copy of this book from the publisher.

Overall, I liked the book. However, it wasn't as good as I was expecting. A Scream -esque slasher book that takes place on Halloween and has a good review by R.L. Stine (my favorite author) on the cover has my name written all over it. And the cover is cool. But, there were some aspects of the book that made it fall a little short for me.

First, the things I liked. I liked the plot; it's a fun premise and an entertaining read. Even though I figured out who the killer was pretty early on, I'm glad I was right. I liked "Sidney"/ "Final Girl" . I even liked the ending. I saw some of the 1 and 2 star reviews mentioned hating the ending, but I really liked it. I just wish the ending hadn't been so abrupt and we got a little more explanation.

There were some unanswered questions and some plot holes:

Also: Where did get the chainsaw in the first place? The party had a Texas Chainsaw Massacre theme and there were football players in the corn maze with chainsaws to scare the partygoers, but it's stated that the chains had been removed from the chainsaws. So, didn't get the chainsaw from one of them. Plus, if had gotten it from one of them, wouldn't the person got the chainsaw from come forward and be like, " took my chainsaw right before Chloe was murdered"? None of the football players in the corn maze had been killed, so didn't kill one of them and take the chainsaw. And, again: none of those chainsaws had chains on them. For me, that seems like a plot hole. The only realistic/ logical way could have gotten the chainsaw was by taking it from one of the football players in the corn maze, and that person would know had a chainsaw. Also, was the chainsaw never fingerprinted?

Another plot hole:

Even though I figured out early on who the killer was, I wouldn't say this is predictable.

I would like to know why and have some sort of flashback or explanation of how managed to pull off Chloe's murder. The ending definitely needed to be elaborated on, too. Like other reviews have said: this book needs a sequel. The ending leaves too many unanswered questions for this to be a standalone.

But, even with the unanswered questions and plot holes, this book would have still been a solid 4 or 4.5 stars and I probably would have loved it.

What I really disliked about this book was how preachy it was about race and gender. Especially since neither of those things had anything to do with anything. The victims were targeted for specific reasons, and those reasons had nothing to do with their race or gender.

Motive spoiler:

Horror movies have had social commentary in it for decades, but it's always been subtle. This book has 2 characters (Millie and X) whose sole purposes were to go on rants about how sexist, racist, transphobic, etc... slasher movies are. For example: X is black. He finds out there is a killer on the loose and people are being murdered. He and Alice are outside and they know the killer is in the house. Alice tells him she's going back inside to find her sister. X, logically, decides he's not going back in the house. Then this conversation happens:

Alice: "I thought it was only a myth that the Black character always dies first in horror movies?"

X: "Yeah, you white girls die way more frequently, but that's only because they don't usually think to include Black characters."

(For some reason, the author always capitalizes "black" when talking about race.)

People are being murdered and his friend is about to go into the house where they know the killer is and he thinks now is the best time to point out the lack of black people in horror movies? And, it's the second time in the book that X says the same thing. Earlier in the book X says:

"I think the Black body count is so low because they forget to include Black people in these movies."

And he says this while talking about Claire's murder. X and Millie have a horror podcast and decide to use Claire's real life murder to talk about how racist horror movies are. That episode of their podcast is posted on the anniversary of Claire's death and they actually say that Claire was murdered because pretty white girls always die first in horror movies. Claire was their best friend's sister and they're reducing her real life murder to a horror movie trope. Even Alice thought it was disgusting. Why she stayed friends with them in the second timeline, I don't know.

I didn't always like Alice. For the most part, she was fine. But, she had her random out of place preachy moments, too, which was annoying. Like when she goes to house to warn her that the killer is coming after her. had just gotten out of the shower and was wearing an oversized shirt and no pants and even though Alice knows the killer is nearby and coming after it doesn't stop her from having this internal monologue after seeing how she's dressed:

Look, I'm not slut- shaming or anything- if I were home alone I wouldn't be wearing pants, either-

She should have just stopped right there, but she goes on:

- but if I were watching this scene in a movie, I'd be rolling my eyes so hard they'd fall out of my head. Of course she's not wearing pants. Gotta make sure all the fourteen-year-old boys watching at home have hard-ons while a teenage girl gets murdered.

Newsflash: you're not watching this scene play out in a horror movie. That is a real girl who is being targeted by a real killer. Maybe save your feminist rants for the internet and focus on trying to help her?

Fortunately, Alice didn't really have a lot of those moments and Millie and X weren't in the book a lot, so we weren't getting beat over the head with blatant social commentary (that actually had nothing to do with the book) the whole time. It would have been one thing if the victims were being targeted because they were black or female or trans or something like that, but they weren't. So, there really was no reason to keep putting that into the book.

The whole "if this were a horror movie..." and "if I were watching this in a horror movie..." thing happened a lot throughout the book and, for the most part, I didn't really mind it. Most of the time it fit well into the the narrative. However, there were times (like the example above) when it felt less like Alice being in a horror situation and more like a random narrator's voice over commentary.

Despite everything, I would still recommend this book. It's a good Halloween slasher read. I likely won't read the book again, but if this were a movie, I'd probably watch it every year around Halloween. It definitely has a Scream meets Halloween vibe and I dig it. I personally think this would make a better movie than book, so I hope it does eventually get made into a movie.

– 2 ★ I ⊹ 𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘳-𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸

if this was a horror movie...it'd be nominated for the most boring one to ever exist.

with all due respect, the fmc was so painfully stupid. she wanted to be like Pip Fitz Amobi so bad, but she failed miserably.

there was really no need for horror movie references in almost every chapter. like, girl, I understood you were obsessed with them the very first time it was mentioned.

moreover, I found nobody in this book likeable. all of these characters were so annoying. the romance felt so forced, and there was no chemistry between Alice and Wes, to begin with. why make them a couple if they're definitely not meant to be?

I didn't care much about a single thing in this book, and yet managed to guess who the killer was. like, pls, it was so obvious. not my fault that the fmc was so stupid that she couldn't put two and two together 🤦🏻‍♀️ she surely didn't pay fully attention to these horror movies she was so fond of.

I think the idea was there, but the execution turned out to be really poor. the plot couldn't keep me interested for long, as it was simply boring. what bothered me the most was the writing style. it was so meh, it totally lacked any kind of emotions. and I suppose that's why the plot twists made me feel...nothing. I was reading them with a facial expression that looked as if I was reading some boring stuff in my history textbook and not supposedly the biggest plot twist in the entire book. 😭 I wasn't a big fan of the ending either. it felt like the author didn't know how to exactly tie up the loose ends, so she chose the easy way out, and put as many plot twists as she possibly could to this book.
Danielle Valentine's google search before writing the ending: plot twists in horror movies that will make my readers fall asleep.
and with so many plot twist being there (they weren't even that mind-blowing. pretty mid, if you ask me) she still couldn't do it right. it was just underwhelming. the ending fell short, it'd make much more sense if there was a sequel to it. (though, I wouldn't read it anyways. I choose happiness)

so overall, this was a huge let down for me. I've heard so many good things about this one which made my expectations pretty high. and sadly, they weren't met.

don't judge a book by its cover, they say. but maybe this time I should've judged it by its cover, because why did I expect so much from a book that has glittery kitty ears headband 2016 era on the cover? sorry, my bad.

This could have been so much better and I really wanted to love it!! I hated all the "woke" crap being shoved down my throat!! It was unneeded and the book would have been just fine without it. The overall story started so good and kept me guessing but that ending...... 🤦‍♀️ugh what was the author thinking 🤔 😕

I have to say this book is a quick moving wild ride. I loved all of the old school slasher references and the theme of the rules of being a Final Girl. The writing was excellent and I enjoyed the twist at the end. Alice has always been into horror movies, especially slashers with Final Girls. Alice and her friends are even working on a podcast to dissect true crime and slashers to pull out the rules to be a Final Girl. Until the night Alice and her sister go to a Halloween party and Claire is murdered before Alice’s eyes. It’s time for the trial and Alice is the key witness to convict Owen, but there isn’t much evidence he committed the other crimes that night. A Sidney Prescott lookalike talks to Alice at the courthouse and before she knows it she has been knocked out and sent back to the night her sister died with the task of figuring out what happened before midnight. But this isn’t a vision, this do over is for keeps.

"I want to see lives ruined. People destroyed. I want to listen to other people screaming. It’s the only time I can drown out the screams still echoing through my head."

Danielle captured my pitch black little heart after I read the Merciless. It was so dark and disturbing that I became obsessed with her books. She is now one of my auto-read authors and she never disappoints.

If you had a chance to go back a year, solve a murder in only twenty-four hours, and deal with those consequences afterward, would you? I'm not sure what I would do because altering the past could bring hellfire to the future.

This book was wow. I kept repeating, "Are you f**king kidding me!!?", after completing this book and I'm still thinking that now. I thought I had it all figured out but I was wrong. I was close though. Close enough that you feel the hot breath on your neck. I enjoyed every damn second of this book and I'm ready to read it again. That ending gave me goosebumps (goosebumps up and down my arms and a shiver shooting down my spine) My mouth is still hanging open in shock.

The mystery was a great one because you never see any of this coming. Things were thrown in to lead you astray and that's exactly what happens. You get pulled in one direction and you follow. The nineties references were tubular *wink* The more Danielle talked about Scream, the more I knew it wasn't going to end like that. The characters were messy in the best kind of way. Alice played a hell of a role and she can help me solve murders any day.

How to Survive Your Murder was absolutely amazing. Nothing gave away who was behind the Halloween murders and that made this even more exciting. I loved all the horror movie references and that the main characters talked about the 'Final Girl' and all the cliches that come with those movies. It was a perfect read and one I highly suggest reading.

This book not only kept me turning pages, but it also introduced me to a new author. A five star read and great for anybody else who likes scary movies. So now I have to read absolutely everything they write. This book was perfect for me. I love horror movies! The plot, combined Scream with Ground Hogs day. There were a lot of scary movie references, final girl references and even a character described as Sidney Prescott. Lol. The main character witnessed her sisters murder. A year later, the murderer is on trial, and suddenly she is giving a chance to relive the day and night her sister was murdered. Her goal is to save her sister at any cost. I really enjoyed the characters and the plot. The book read like a really great movie and I won’t be surprised if it doesn’t become a movie or TV show in the future! I’m looking forward to the author’s new book which should be released this year.

1.7 ⭐️
hate review

You may be asking, why would i give this book a 1.7 star rating?
Because i want to give it one star, not two. I might’ve did it just because i’ve gotten sick this week, which put me in a bad mood.

So, there are many, many things that icked me out in this book.
starting with:

1- The cover. I should really start judging books by their cover, because the glittery kitty ears head band in the cover was ghastly, and 2016 coded, not in a good way
(I also remember wearing that same exact headband on a school trip, which was interestingly amusing to look back on..)

2- There is this one particular thing one of the characters said which made me feel icky.
-“You’re coming too, right, Allison? it’s gonna be slay.”
I beg your pardon?
GIRLY THAT’S NOT EVEN THE CHARACTERS NAME?!
And also, i’m NOT gonna try and talk about how she said slay, because i know this review will turn into a rant of why this author chose the word “Slay” to put in this sentence specifically?! She could’ve said “Fun”, “Exciting”, SO MANY OTHER WORDS TO CHOOSE FROM!! why?

3- Fmc was genuinely so stupid i literally almost dnfed several times.. partly because i was honestly getting bored out of my mind from how bad the characters were.. LITERALLY EVERYONE.

4- The plot wasn’t that good at all. Plot twist didn’t surprise me, and i took no effort in trying to figure out the “plot twist” because, i was not interested into doing that whatsoever. Only reason i read this so fast was because i brought it to school, and there was LITERALLY nothing to do that day.

5- There is such a thing as too many references, i get that Alice loves horror movies, but WHY ARE THERE SO MANY REFERENCES LIKE WE GET IT GOD!! IT’S GOTTEN TOO REPETITIVE.

I did not go into this book with the purpose of wanting to hate read it, but unfortunately.. It wasn’t really that difficult to hate.

I’ve never wrote a review this long, which proves how much i dislike this book.

(I hope nobody takes this review to heart. everyone has a different opinion on things which is OK:) )

I hope you have a wonderful, wonderful day my loves!! xx<3

I WAS NOT EXPECTING THAT.

Really glad the killer wasn’t the obvious choice. I absolutely love the twist and how Allie going back in time feels like a totally different story (because she learns that no everyone is who you think they are). But I’m really hoping for a sequel because damn. That ending hurt.

What a great slasher story! I need more like this (especially with all the 90s nostalgia)

I HATE every person in the reviews of this author’s second ya thriller saying they loved THIS book bc WHAT THE FUCK. The title should be HOW TO SURVIVE THIS FUCKING BOOK !

It would’ve been four stars at least if not for the last 3 minutes !!! Because !!!! Let me tell you that’s the REAL crime.

I’m lucky I read the second book by the author before this one bc I wouldn’t have touched it with a ten foot POLE out of pure respect for myself.

Be careful what you wish for…

It’s been a year since Alice’s sister, Claire, was brutally murdered. And now, as a key witness to the crime, Alice must face the perpetrator in court.

As anxiety starts to get the best of her, Alice quickly dashes to the restroom in an attempt to recover from her nausea. While there, Alice runs into a Sydney Prescott look-alike and is knocked unconscious. Upon waking up, Alice comes to realize that she’s gone back in time to that fateful day. Now Alice must find out the truth behind the murder if she wants any chance to get her sister back. But at what cost?

I was a little hesitant to read How to Survive Your Murder after getting a glimpse of the except. I’m so glad that I had the opportunity to read the entire novel. It was a thrilling page turner. And OMG! What an ending!

There are a number of characters. Primarily teenagers going through high school and adolescent angst. The main character is Alice who is also the MC in the novel. So the narrative is in Alice’s point of view which I think is the best format for a novel like this one. The other characters were colorful and added a lot of depth to the landscape — from funny to brooding and everything in between.

The plot is somewhat complex in that there are a number of twists to misdirect the reader. And the insertion of Sydney Prescott into the mix gave the novel a different dimension.

If you’re a fan of horror films of the mid to late 90’s, How to Survive Your Murder is a must read as it mentions and references a number of the popular horror films of that era. It’s a nice touch and it certainly made for interesting and entertaining reading. Five fabulous stars.

I received a finished copy of the book from Penguin Teen throught Bookish First. The review herein is completely my own and contains my honest thoughts and opinions.

I've thought about this for like 8 hours and I've decided that this book doesn't deserve my original 2.25 stars. Hell, it barely deserves 2 stars. I almost said the 2 stars would be for Wes because his character is like everything I could want, but then I remembered how the author literally forgot about him in the end. So fuck that.

A barely 2 star book. Like I finished it. Not because I really wanted to but mainly to see if I was right about the ending, which I was. I think the problem with this book is that the story is there and it’s fun and there’s murder everywhere, which is always a good time, but oh boy the writing. That was truly abysmal.

The thing is that this book was very much written by a 35+ year old adult that was trying very hard to not just write for a Gen Z audience but as a Gen Z teenager, and it was so bad. It’s like when an adult tries to seem cool and relatable to get the kids to like them but in reality all they’re doing is setting themselves up as the butt of the joke. Because the author was trying to do this, in my opinion it simply sets the book up to be bad automatically. I don’t care how good the plot may be, which honestly is a bit of a stretch here, but bad writing can’t save a book. I understand that I am not the target audience for this book and I understand that my generation has its own quirks and cringe, but that feeling of knowing the author is doing what they’re doing to seem like a current teen or appeal to them makes everything worse. It also read as a white author trying her very best to sound politically correct and unoffensive and it was so completely unnatural and constantly broke up the flow of everything. I guarantee that if the author wrote in the way that was comfortable for her, rather than putting on this Gen Z voice, the story would come off way better. But we’ll never know because of her apparent dream to be cool and accepted by today’s youths.

Something else that bugged me was the characters because everyone was so one dimensional that it got to the point where I would’ve been fine with everyone dying because they didn’t matter. The main character had one personality trait, which was liking horror movies. And obviously that was the set up for this entire story because her love and knowledge of the genre should’ve helped her to “solve the mystery” but it didn’t because as it turns out, Alice is incredibly stupid. Though that probably works in favour of the plot because almost all horror movie characters are also incredibly stupid, so there’s a theory there for sure. But the problem with this being Alice’s only personality trait is that it really didn’t let us see anything else about her. There’s no deep emotional connections with her and any other character because everything is so surface. Her friends are her friends because they all watch the same movies. She has a crush on a boy because they share movie recommendations. She has virtually no relationship with either of her parents and the “sister bond” with Claire is all told to me but there’s nothing to really show me or prove to me how close Alice actually is to her sister. I don’t know why I’m supposed to feel any kind of empathy towards the plot of her trying to save her sister from dying because there’s no buildup of a connection, in my opinion. Because it’s all surface. Honestly, the characters in this book are basically plucked out of a basic horror movie, which is probably on purpose given the entire point of the book, and all either fit into generic tropes or character roles and it does nothing for the book. It does nothing for me as a reader. The author did nothing with these characters beyond making them boring caricatures.

This brings me to the plot: absolutely, completely predictable. Is it only me? Was I the only one who could clearly see what the plot twist was going to be halfway through? Did the author make it too obvious? Or am I just that good? We’ll never know. But boy, that twist was clearly going to happen and I’m mad that it happened and mad that it wasn’t something else. Again, so cliché and so boring. But the problem with this twist being so obvious is that the main character is so oblivious and stupid that she has to think it’s everyone BUT who it actually is and ends up being so shocked when she discovers the truth that it’s laughable. Like I figured this out so many pages ago, how could you not see it? It’s a stupid plot twist for an even dumber ending and it made everything feel so pointless. “Oh hey, everything you just went through? Yeah, doesn’t matter in the slightest but have fun with your life now!” No payoff, no satisfaction, and I also just realized that this one character died and either no one knows or cares in the end so what was the point of that? What was the point of anything?

Listen, if you want to read a quick story full of murder then this is going to be fun. The murder book aspect of it all was enjoyable to a degree. But the writing, the stupidity of the characters, the predictability…ugh. I also just realized how strong the misogynistic undertones of this book are at the end of the day and now I’m furious. So ladies, next time you find out a man in your life is cheating make sure you kill the OTHER people and not the man. They’re the villain, not the man. Give me a break.

"How to be a Final Girl"

This is a one POV book, told by the POV of Alice.

I really liked Alice as a MC and I loved how curious she was and how warily she got over time with the other characters as the murders progressed. I feel like she made a lot of right decisions and was really brave about it as well. I also liked how she wasn´t all set and stubborn in her opinion; but learned how to change her perspective over the span of the book.

With side characters I liked Wes the most and I am kinda sad that he didn´t get an "ending" in the book; I would have loved to know how his story ended. In regard for Eli I can say that I think he got too little background story and too little pages of actually "being there" as a character for him to be a best friend....

This book kind of combines crime and fantasy elements. There is the time travel aspect to it, which was kind of confusing to me at first but I managed to get into it pretty quickly. The book is quick paced and the suspense is definitely there. By third of the book I thought I had the killer all figured out but turned out I was wrong. By the 2/3 mark of the book I still managed to guess who it was but it only took a bit of fun away from the story. There is a hint of romance in here as well as many references to horror and slasher movies. Many of the plot twists were done really well and the last third of the book turned really hectic/suspenseful. For my taste it was even a little bit too hectic because suddenly characters kept dying left and right. But he ending was actually chilling and I liked how the book ended.

Overall it was a quick read and finally something above 2 stars again!

I know this one will NOT be for everyone, but this was one hell of a wild ride.

This is one of those books that I think it's best to go in with as little information as possible. The author did a fantastic job of putting in twists and turns that I did not see coming. And y'all, the ending had my jaw on ground. I am still in shock that the author went there.

Thank you to Penguin Teen for providing a review copy. This did not influence my review. All opinions are my own.

“How to Survive Your Murder” begins with Chloe's murder, then flashes back to a few hours before the event. We then follow the life of Alice Lawrence before the murder of her sister Claire, of which she’s the sole witness.
A year later, as the trial for her sister's murder draws near, she prepares to confront Claire's killer, while doubts arise about the reliability of her testimony that night.

On the day of the trial, in the courthouse bathroom, she meets a Silvy Prescott's lookalike, who asks her if she can bear the guilt of having convicted an innocent man. Alice explodes and feels even more resentful before she gets knocked out and wakes up the night of the murder.
“Adrenaline is good when you're running from serial killers.”

I'm not sure how I feel about this book, it was interestin' but also frustratin'. Alice is presented as an expert on horror films, constantly critiquing the characters' actions and mistakes. However, she often behaved dumber than these characters. While I understand that she's a teenager and her behavior is typical, there were times when her questions were irrelevant, and I’d be like “Girl, be for real, that's enough.” I mean, be smart for once.

Listen, it wasn't bad, but I wish the last few pages hadn’t stretched the story too much. To be honest, I wasn't mentally prepared to find out the identity of the killer, but once it was revealed, it all made sense in the end. It's true what they say: “Be careful what you wish for”...

ugh finally im done.

there will be spoilers ahead, but im just too lazy to block them out so read at ur own risk.

ok we're back with the laptop and blutooth keyboard, ready to hate on this poor book <3.

THIS BOOK WAS HORRENDOUS. i skim read the whole thing basically, which means even i couldnt stomach it. (speaking of stomachs, 'her stomach went oily' like 3 times ewwwww)

it follows alice, whos obsessed with horror movies and final girls (dont ask me what this is i wouldnt know it was said like twice every page i should know ) and is too quirky and not pretty enough to be a final girl, but looks up to her sister who 'could' be one.

so on halloween alice and her sister decide to go to a party in a cornmaze (this is so random as a setting but maybe its the non american in me talking) and then they see this guy rip an arm of a popular girl oh no!! shes not pretty anymore then kills her sister.

this is all while having a weird ass romance with some guy called wesley james hansen the third (or something stupid like that) he was like kicked out of multiple schools and shit idk honestly.

a year later, alice is getting ready to be the sole witness in this murder trial. she slips and bashes her head in the bathroom and some fairy godmother type thing appears and says she has anohter chance at saving her sister.

so alice is all like yay i can see her again.

this is all while finding out her dad has been cheating with younger girls (her friends from high school. that. she. fucking. knows. like what??), her sister is a murderer, and alice was completely wrong about everything. but that doesnt matter bc shes still so quirky and emo and not like the other girls right?

to summarise, instead of one murder, they were all murdered, and alice still hasnt learnt her lesson.
it sucked. dont read it.

Scream fans meet your new favorite book. Young adult author Danielle Valentine brings us Halloween thrills in the summertime with #HowToSurviveYourMurder (releasing August 30th). Thank you @razorbillbooks for the gifted advanced copy.

Alice’s sister Claire was murdered in a corn maze one year ago and upon the start of the murder trial she is given the chance to go back and find out what really happened that day. Using her final girl expertise, she navigates the hours leading up to the event. Can she stay alive long enough to find the real killer?

I read quite a few “thrillers” this summer and this one most certainly stands out. It’s FUN and nostalgic and twisty too. A thoroughly entertaining read and I have hopes for a sequel too.
