I was an extremely naïve eighteen year old, but I wasn’t a virgin. I had somehow got embroiled with a much older man, so when yet another older man took an interest in me, it didn’t seem like a good idea to become involved with him; especially one with such a dominant manner. But it seems as if I didn’t have a choice.
A memoir of a different life at a different time - the seventies - when attitudes to sex outside marriage were just changing and when different lifestyles only existed between the pages of top-shelf books. Or did they?
Former high school teacher and university lecturer, Suze E Prescot (aka Essey Nelson) has lived and worked in Lancashire (according to its original boundaries) her whole life. She loves cats and horses, and is, in fact fond of all animals. She loves reading, often reading five or more stories a week. She has no fave type of story, and her bookshelves boast detective and mystery, crime and spy, science fiction and fantasy, and plenty of humour. From Shakespeare, Austen and the Brontës, to modern indie authors, if its well-written, she will read it. Despite her catholic tastes, she tends to write romance, and will happily argue that most fiction falls under that banner. Her heroes are strong and wonderful men - on the inside at least! While her heroines are intelligent, capable, yet often naïve and pure whatever their age.
We meet Elizabeth at nineteen. She hasn't had an easy childhood, having never been able to live up to the expectations of "parent and step-parent" as she charmingly refers to them throughout her story. Finally out from her childhood home, she has found herself living rough and has found herself in an abusive relationship. Enter Jamieson, a strikingly handsome older man who has business with her employer.
"Billionaire romance" isn't my usual genre, but I enjoyed the authors first two releases, both romance novellas with disparate settings and feels, and I was keen to see what she would bring to a longer tale.
She knocks it out of the park.
I loved Elizabeth from the first page, and the world she lives in, England in the late 1970s, holds a special interest for me. Suze is writing and era she knows and I loved the plentiful cultural easter eggs and colloquialisms - I desperately wanted to work "this knocked them into a cocked hat" into this review and it seems I have, so bully for me.
Given her difficult past, Elizabeth doesn't trust easily and it was a joy watching her relax and blossom as she comes to appreciate and accept Jamieson's feelings for her. A part of this, once she is comfortable with him, is the evolution of a dominant/submissive relationship between them, in which Elizabeth thrives despite having no knowledge of "the lifestyle", in fact very little sexual education whatsoever.
The story is told as an extended flashback, with an older Elizabeth narrating from a perspective gained through age and experience. It's not a format I've seen often in romance novels but it works brilliantly here. Given the nature of the relationship between Elizabeth and Jamieson there are many intimate scenes between the two, something I know the author can write, and she excels herself in these. If you like your kink in piping hot and plentiful serves then I guarantee you will not be disappointed.
All the stars! Do yourself a favour and check it out.
Wow, what an amazing story! It's one of those books you yell at.
The naivety of the main character, Elizabeth, really hit home for me, I was torn between "don't do that", "say something" and "yes, I would've (have) done that too".
I wanted to set a story when I was young; before 'nice' girls knew much about sex; when pornography was spoken of in whispers, when skin mags were on the top shelf in newsagents, when sex shops had blacked-out windows. Lizzie doesn't know what her role is when it comes to sex; she thinks - had been told - that sex was something men enjoyed and women endured, and everything she had experienced confirmed that view, until Jamieson.
I really enjoyed this story. It's longer than this writers other stories cause its 350 pages long, but I read it non-stop. Elizabeth is still a teen and is involved with an older man, but he doesn't treat her right so when another older man comes along she isn't sure but Jamieson is different. I loved Elizabeth and Jamieson and the hot stuff between them.
Extraordinary! I loved everything about this story, truly! Lizzie's story is heartwrenching and heartwarming. Engaging! She was bullied, and has lots of insecurities...enter Jamison. Oh. My. Gosh. I loved Jamison and Lizzie's story. I cringed, I laughed, I hoped, and I cried. Their story has tension, angst, drama, and true love. Their chemistry is sizzling, sexy, and unique. Author Suze E Prescot has crafted a magnificent and emotionally driven love story. Hands down a 5-star read!
