The Harem Project #1

House of Daemon

Rate this book
My name is Ady. I’ve been running, hiding in the open, for as long as I can remember. My goal has always been to appear normal, mundane, so I was left alone.

I had accomplished that for more than a decade but life was calling now. I was finishing my degree and facing what every person faces: life. Consequences. Responsibility.

University had given me a taste of things I’d never had before. Stability. Friends to miss me if I stop showing up. The promise of a future I wasn’t sure I’d ever see.

But it had also shown me what I didn’t have and likely wouldn’t ever get. Anonymity to live this life that I was preparing for. To have a job and an apartment. To keep my friends. To find someone to love me - to build a life with me.

The week before graduation, I was handed a brochure at the career fair advertising something called ‘The Harem Project’ in which you can opt to tie into a family. A group of men. A group of women. A mix. Whatever you’re interested in. Through a series of tests and questions, I was given a tablet with a list of the harems that I would fit in with, based on our compatibility.

That’s where I met the five gloriously gorgeous men of the House of Daemon.

And my life has never been the same. Most days, I’m sure it's for the better. I thought I might actually get everything I never dreamed of wanting.

But other days I was sure my death was going to be much quicker. Because the men - they’re not normal. And what’s been hunting me has now teamed up with what’s hunting them.

They’re not human.

But then, neither am I.

**This is a story in which the female main character does not have to choose between love interests. Story contains violence, dark pasts, briefs glimpses of torture, and explicit sex scenes. Intended for mature audiences.

Crea lives in upstate New York with her dog and husband. She has been writing since grade school, when her second grade teacher had her class keep writing journals. She has a habit of creating secondary, and often time tertiary, characters that take over her stories. When she can't fall asleep at night, she thinks up new scenes for her characters to act out. This, of course, is how most of her meant-to-be-thrown-away characters tend to end up front and center - and utterly swoon-worthy! Don't ask her how many book boyfriends she has...

When not writing, Crea is an avid reader. Her TBR pile is several hundred books high (don't even look at her kindle wish list or the unread books on her tablet). Sometimes, she enjoys crafting; sometimes, exploring nature; sometimes, traveling. Mostly, she enjoys putting her characters on paper and breathing life into them. Oh, and sleeping. Crea loves to sleep!

This was a bit disappointing for me.
I was expecting a lot more honestly, from what the blurb said.

The concept was super cool and sexy. I really liked the idea of an agency that matches you with your perfect harem of partners. And I liked the paranormal aspect. The mystery of what the FMC was and how her men were going to react, and the not so subtle ‘secret’ that her men were demons (daemons😂🙄 so subtle) and that neither side knew what the other was. I was hoping for a big reveal that cause some drama and kickstarted some growth and development for the characters.

Unfortunately, the delivery of all of those things that I liked sort of fell flat.
There was hardly any drama that happened when they found out. Nothing to work through and grow through. Just acceptance and then they’re moving on to more nothing happening, until the very end of the book.

The sex was definitely sexy, but there was a lot cut out of it and then vaguely mentioned later. There was a lot of things alluded to without actually getting into or happening on page. What we got on page was pretty vanilla sex that just so happened to involve 5 men. What was hinted at and alluded to, was MM relationships, power exchange dynamics, kinks, Blow Jobs. We never got a BJ on page. Just a hint that one of the men had her deep throat him the night before and that he’d loved it but it hadn’t been her favorite. Didn’t love that.
Personally, I prefer when the FMC really enjoys and wants Everything her men throw at her. Maybe that’s asking too much, but I don’t think so.
And we never got to see the men together on page in any sort of capacity. I don’t even remember them kissing each other. There’s just a vague conversation about them fucking each other and the FMC asks if she’ll be able to see that.

And then that ending.
So anticlimactic for something that was so traumatic.
I won’t say much more, because I hate spoilers, but I just could’ve really used some more healing and struggle, to make the ending more sweet and satisfying.

Then the timeline. It kept skipping big chunks of time with little happening on page, no warning, no explanation. It was just strange and made things a little hard to follow.

I don’t know.
I don’t think it’s a bad book. I liked what little we got to know of the characters. I just wanted so much more from them all.
I don’t think I’ll be reading more in the series. It just didn’t feel like a complete book. A lot of little things were missing for me.

Not for me

Definitely not a bad book, it just wasn't doing it for me for a couple of reasons. Firstly the leader/alpha of the guys demands 'obedience', which is a hard no from me generally. I thought I'd give it a chance anyway, as I was already interested in the fmc and the plot by then. But then the first really intimate scene just wasn't doing it for me at all, it seemed more like she was being attacked, and the disjointed sentences and chaotic descriptions, followed by Bastian's demanding and controlling, just left me cold.
So yeah, it's not you, it's me Ms Reitan, and I'm pretty sure that other readers will like it.

Personally I felt this could of been so much better, but it was quite vague. Everything felt like it was surface level. Very fast paced and again vague, no real details were given or emotional connections with the characters.

Here's the thing- this wasn't a bad book, but it contained one of my biggest book pet-peeves.

It drives me absolutely out of my mind bonkers when an author uses the world Yea instead of yeah. Every time I see "yea" on the page I want to crumple into a ball and die of second-hand cringe.

The plot itself is interesting for a paranormal romance- and I got this book free from Stuff Your Kindle, but even I am not so strong as to look past when this harem is in the middle of a sexy scene and this badass, dangerous, most powerful of all the demons dude is saying "YEA."

So House of Daemon get's 2 stars for effort.

It's an interesting concept. This girl, Ady, is lost and so she enters into this thing called The Harem Project. She get's matched with a few harems, but is drawn to House of Daemon and they meet up. They get married and later find love together. It's a pretty sweet deal.

The book wouldn't have grated on me so much if the only real conflict that happens, happened in the last bit of the book and took two chapters to resolve. I'm being nit-picky- I know. But this is my honest review. I get that this is a romance novel, but I felt like there could've been more substance here. Seeing as the book wasn't too, too spicy.

I just read this book and i loved it. It was incredible, and intense. Each character was different in their personalities. I believe its a new series and only has 1 book so far. I wanted it to continue. If anyone looking for spice and intensity, i recommend this one.❤🙂

Interesting concept but mostly bland execution. None of the relationships felt meaningfully developed, and the background story didn't really grab my interest.

Interesting concept

I liked the idea of a "Harem Project" 😏 (wish it could be for real...😅). This is a standalone RH with multiple POV even if there isn't really "multiple" POV...😕
The guys were sweet and the MM side didn't take too place.
Adeline, the FMC, is a supernatural living in hiding. She's alone and a bit lost, not knowing what she will do after her graduation. She got enrolled in the Harem Project, finding there something she was missing and hoping finding security in a harem.
Some details weren't very realistic though, like marrying total stranger and having group sex with them the very first day you meet them...🧐🤔 not sure about it...
A good book, I will read other books of this serie!

I loved the idea of this book and I felt like the story was really good. My problem with it though was that we really didn't get to see Ady form a deep bond with the guys. It's like it happened offscreen. Also I felt like the end of the book was really rushed and it jumped around a little too much for me. It's like the beginning of the book took its time to set up this world and then there was no more time at the end of the book so it was just all squeezed in.

I loved the idea of this book though and there were so many sweet moments in it that I didn't expect. Glad I read it, but I don't think I'll read the rest of the series.

What did I just read-

HOW ARE U GONNA TELL ME U TAKE A QUIZ AND MARRY 5 GUYS WITHOUT MEETING THEM HOW DO PEOPLE COME UP WITH THESE PLOTS-

It’s not for me, I just- yeah no.. I’m sure some people would enjoy this. I’m also not a fan of MM so that didn’t help. Skimmed through all those parts.

Something did keep me reading wanting to read tho so I’ll give it that! Like the idea of the plot is interesting and definitely different but when it actually unfolds u can’t help but think “where tf did it go wrong for me to be reading this”, uk?

The biggest “reveal” moment was them finding about her being supernatural and vice versa and as a reader who already knew that from reading the summary of the book, I gotta say I was hoping for a real plot twist or smt I didn’t see coming.

I’m still not over the fact that the first time she saw the guys was AT their wedding.

And the fact that her best friend also joins a harem??? Are u gonna tell me it’s that common in the US for groups of 6-10 to be in a relationship?????

The rescue team at the end was cute. Ryker was my favourite from the minute they said she matched 100# with him and I stand by that having finally finished this book. That is all.

4 Stars !!!!

I really liked reading this book which I was kinda surprised about based on the little blurb. It sounded like the FMC was going to be more depressed and that would be a defining plot point of the story, but I was happily surprised that the author didn't milk her feelings but actually made them relatable to the audience.

I loved that the relationships between the guys are established even after it was initially mentioned. I did think that those moments were written as a "oh I need to put this in because I said it before" - ya know like "omg I forgot." I wish there was more but I think this particular part was better written towards the end.

I loved the relationships between all of them though. It was exactly what I was hoping for :))) However, I do wish that the end chapter when the FMC was captured was before the rescue because it didn't make sense, personally. Idk what the author was trying to do... I think the book could have been 100 pages more because I felt like it was missing something though.

LOVED: the characters, the relationship dynamics, the portrayal of character feelings and actions, Ryker (<3), watching the characters grow and people and develop (<3)

DIDN'T LOVE: the look of the house (all black really? but then I got why but still lol), the quick summary ending, the short set up to the next series that was built up and then fell short.

Fun new world from Crea!

I am already eager to read the next book in this series to see how the next House finds their final piece to their family. This new series from Crea was exactly as I have come to expect from this author; detailed plot, complex characters, strong female character, and real life relationship issues to work through.

Stand-alones always make me nervous to pick up because I encounter too many that seem to be rushed with minimal character development and vague details. This book was far from vague and rushed. I can see an overarching plot for the entire series blooming even though each book plans on showcasing different Houses but I am excited to see the direction the author goes with this new series.

I definitely recommend to readers looking for HEA, RH, demons and other supernaturals, high heat steam, detailed world and complex characters, and a dramatic plot.

This book is incredible. Read it, you will not regret it.

House of Daemon is book 1 of a new series The Harem Project. It is a dark PNR RH with a variety of supernaturals, Alphamales, various poly relationships and is just an overall phenomenal read.

Ady is ‘other’, the rest of her kind have been hunted to near extinction, but Ady has survived by masking her scent amongst large groups of humans.
Days away from graduation, Ady is running out of time to figure out what happens next. All alone she has spent her life on the run hiding in plain sight.
While checking out the graduate job fair she meets a recruiter matching pamphlets based on Q&A. While browsing her spoils Ady comes across something called The Harem Project, a new age matchmaking service putting families together. Sceptical at first, Ady takes a chance and decides to check it out hoping to find a place to go.

This book will draw you in from the start and not let you go until the very last page, the characters are well written, the concept of the book is interesting and the plot progresses at a steady pace. I can’t wait to see what comes next for this series.

Wow. This book took me on a ride I was in no way prepared for. This is a world that is chillingly familiar in its xenophobia while being somewhat unrecognizable with the presence of active magic. I am completely in love with the concept of finding a family in any of its many possible forms, and my heart broke a little for Ady during her search. It also beat triple-time with jealousy when she found that perfect family to call home. I’m very curious to learn more about the turmoil that’s brewing in their world, and I can’t wait to dig into the next book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author.

OMG THIS IS SOOOO GOOOODDDD!!!!!!
Starting a new series is always a gamble but this one did not disappoint!
I loved going on to discover Ady, the Harem Project and the men that it led her to. Really enjoyed how every character is different, both in personality and powers, and how many more there are still to discover!
The love, acceptance and bond that all the characters have for each other is amazing and so well described, I also love how they are al different and develop at their own pace and in their own way.
A must read!

I liked the premise of this story a lot! It was totally unique and different from what I’ve read so far. The idea of a Harem Project was pretty neat, especially the question/answer/matching process. I really enjoyed the individual men in the House of Daemon, especially Ryker and Pax. Ady was a great FMC, she was really their match in every way. I’d love to see this continue with other families as the center of the books.

Are you missing something in your life? Someone? Someones? Ady was about to graduate from college and she felt lost.. Who knew a brochure could change your life forever? I really enjoyed reading this story, the love, acceptance, the sense of family, the fierce protective urges, there's nice mix of darkness to temper the sweetness, and a high heat index..yum. All in all the book is perfection imo, and I am excited for more..no dangerous cliff included.

First and foremost, I was SO happy to see this was first person. My first introduction to Crea was 3rd person POV and I hate it but she does so well with it I don't mind. However, it was really nice no to have to.

Now if you've read Crea's books before you should know that anything in a series seems to move a little slower, in my opinion that's a good thing. We get the build and the backstory and we connect that much better with the characters. I'm seeing a lot of love for Pax and Ryker, I agree but, Juniper. That is all.

I'm a forever fan when it comes to ANYTHING by this author and I can't wait for the rest of this series!

Wanted to do a reread mainly because I’m reading this series as the books are released and I don’t remember every detail (so many characters!!!). Also wanted to see if it held up to the initial 5 star rating I gave it (it definitely did).

I think this book in the series is the best one. I like the other books but parts of them can get repetitive and though the author does try to make them a bit different so we’re not getting the same story each time (FMC goes to The Harem Project, does the survey, gets matched, harem is notified, everyone is happy because they finally completed their family, relationships develop, someone gets kidnapped, Avengers assemble, rescue happens and then onto the next book), they are a bit cookie cutter.

Still, a very entertaining read and in this book I loved Ryker the nightmare and Pax the wraith. So creepy but just want to be loved 🥺

I liked the loveable sweetness of the main characters, all seeking the missing part of their lives. And the 'harem matchmaking service' is a super fun idea and holds a lot of potential. However, the plot felt rushed at the end and I could have done with POVs for all the MCs (we get the FMC and a couple--not all--of the MMCs).

The concept behind this series is brilliant. Each book has a different set of main characters with an over arcing storyline. House of Daemon does an excellent job of world building while still providing a story that engaged me from the beginning. I couldn’t put the book down. I am looking forward to further books in this series.

3.5 rounded up

Overall, I mostly enjoyed this book, but there are several things that pulled at my enjoyment, and they’re all things that a good editor can help clear up.

There aren’t really any glaring grammatical errors, but it does need some line editing. The sentence structure, at least toward the beginning is most S-V-O, which creates a sort of repetition that doesn’t feel natural. Other things are repeated or stated in a way that is confusing, causing a line to have to be reread to get the meaning.

The world-building can be a little confusing, too. There’s so many names thrown around for different houses that it’s hard to connect them to a particular being, and then it’s hard to remember what they are. The heroine is supposed to be pretty strong in her other form, but it doesn’t bleed over to her “human” form very much. She’s very meek and submissive and so, so naive.

Which leads to my major issue with the heroine that requires just a massive suspension of disbelief. She’s been hiding from the supe community forever, and has to remain vigilant at all times, but at no point does she ever really question the Harem Project or any of the weirdness associated with it. She’s lived in the human world for at least a decade, and it just doesn’t make sense that she’d go into without her internal supe radar going off.

Last issue, there are a few things that just don’t make real world sense. You don’t double major in graduate studies, and she should be much closer to thirty than early twenties if she has a PhD. It would have made more sense for her to take fewer classes for longer to have stretched out each degree. And how did she pay for it? If she just appeared in the world at a certain time, then how did she even get into school? More care with her background would make more sense to me.

Also, she has to leave for the airport at noon, and she’s taking a cross-country flight that requires her to sleep overnight on the plane? New York to California is a long flight, but not THAT long. It almost seemed like a transatlantic flight for the length of time she was on the plane. Really, it’s a lot of small details like this (she goes to another realm and thinks her cell phone might work?) that caused me to struggle.

This is called a poly book, and while there is some affection between the MMCs, I don’t recall anything on page other than kissing. The spicy scenes could do with some fluffing (heh) and expansion. The length of time spent on the page sometimes makes them come across as 60 second men 😏, which is not the author’s intention.

Fascinating concept, but needs some content editing to really work. I’ll try book two though and see how that goes

Since I have read Chronicles of Blood/Madness, I'm a huge fan of Crea Reitan. Though, I haven't read every book of her now. Other than the first mentioned, I have only read her new Omegaverse book “Alpha Hunted”. Sure, I wanted to read her books, but you know, sometimes the mood has to strike, and it has to be the right time, too.

In my case, it was the fact, that my favorite genre is Omegaverse, so I was focused on reading that. When I read Chronicles of Blood/Madness, I was obsessed with fairy tale retelling or more Alice in Wonderland themed books. Another thing with my reading habit is, that I only read finished series. And Crea Reitan has some series, that are still not finished. Like Immortal Stream. Or only the first book is out now.

So, long story short: It's a mix of the mentioned issues, why I didn't read the books earlier. Even though Crea is one of my favorite authors.

But now I'm focused on reading the books of her, that I can read. After seeing the Harem Project is a series of standalone books, I decided to read it. Even though it's far from finished. But standalone is a difference for me, because each story is closed in itself, and it doesn't leave a cliffhanger in the common sense. I can handle that.

Overall, I loved House of Daemon. I generally into books with the darker side of species. And I love books with psychopaths and all. I'm not really sure why. If I could give it an own genre, I would say this is the content, that can rival my Omegaverse obsession. Probably I would put it under monster stories (which is my second favorite genre indeed). Especially demons are one of my favorite species, because they are often dangerous, tend to be somewhat psychotic and are variable in shape.

So, House of Daemon wasn't different. I read in one go. Which is lately not that usual. I slowed my reading pace a lot and did some breaks. There weren't many books that caught my interest that much. Especially in Omegaverse. Which is a shame. But probably I needed new input anyway to freshen things up.

My favorite character of the males were definitely Ryker. After that Pax. I loved Bastian, Juniper and Ellis too. But not as much as Ryker and Pax. Then there was Ady. I could understand her and her struggles. Her wish to belong somewhere. I really felt with her. Same with the guys. And I'm so happy, that they found their HEA. I'm sad that the main story is somewhat over with them. I would have liked a second book.

But as the overall plot arch isn't finished yet, I'm sure we will see them in other books as well. I mean, ORKA and The Division of Silence, aren't dead yet.

I'm looking forward to reading the next books.
