This was the most saddest story of all books. My heart broke for Xie Lian. He was never the kind and caring God of Misfortune. There was a time he was challenged and a time he broke down because of it. My heart ached for him when everyone left him. Despite his temper, I felt for him. I never thought Feng Xin would leave him that easily too but you could see his resolve breaking. Even his parents. Through out all, it was just the small ghost fire (we already know who it was). I never thought Xie Lian’s story would be so heartbreaking. The only thing I am thankful is that this novel was the shortest. I could not have bared to read a full 20-40 chapter novel of this sort.

the people did not lie: this book is pain.

Thus, Xie Lian understood. No one would give him a hand to help pull him up.
He laid there for a good while before he crawled up himself.

it was short but packed a punch that had a formidable thunderstorm hidden inside each blow dealt to xie lian. every punch dealt to xie lian was excruciating to read. i know that xie lian has mentioned that he has a high pain tolerance, but i didn't know exactly how much until i read this book. i felt his embarrassment through the stiffening of my shoulders, i felt his rage through the way my eyes narrowed and my head started pounding, and i felt his despair and just wanting to die through my eyes not being able to read further because of my tears blurring my vision and my breath shaking. this book alone made me cry three times within the first half, not to mention the entirety of this story.

but even though i can talk about xie lian's pain (that gave me pain), i want to talk about his development even more. it's undeniably incredible the development xie lian goes through; it adds so much more depth to his character, in the way that i never knew i needed until i got it. to put it simply, it's inspiring and authentic, the way he navigates through the fucked-up, excruciating events that have happened. he's not just the cinnamon-roll, thoughtful fallen god that loves to pick up scraps and forgives easily — and i fucking love how this book shows that. just because he is a kind, helpful person does not mean he's naïve. all his emotions, his choices were real; it never felt like he constantly had to strive to be a perfect person. he did feel that pressure, but it was only because of others watching him, not because he himself believed it. and watching his descent? painful but masterfully conducted.

Curse. Curse all you want. Nothing matters anymore, so just curse however you want.
Either way, everything will soon disappear.
The sun was about to set.

it was pleasantly surprising to me how hua cheng still had a role in this book — and as a cute, little ghost fire! however, it's agonizing to remember that whenever hua cheng does make an appearance, xie lian is always going through some type of pain, like when he's cold in the graveyard and in the temple (the way they both let out heartbreaking screams :') me too bitch). i don't know whether or not i want to talk about that temple scene because of how painful that shit was to read. i had to stop for a moment and mentally prepare myself to continue reading. xie lian mentioned just not wanting to remember some of those early moments of his descent, and i honestly can't blame him because i don't want to remember either. this book was heavy. i'm really grateful there were trigger warnings ahead of time because the author did not hold back.

whenever i remind myself that xie lian got the naming dishes adorable names from his mother, a stab of pain enters my heart. it's always the little things that get to the heart: how ruoye was born, how he got his sword fengxin, how he got two cursed shackles, and how he got his bamboo hat. now that we know how each item came to be xie lian's, it adds more meaning to them, knowing the blood, sweat, and tears that went into each being part of xie lian's life.

Jun Wu looked at him intently, and after a long while, he said, "Xianle has grown up."

the lesson i learned from this book: no matter how far you've gone, no matter what terrible choices you've made, you can come back. you need to make amends, you need to make things right, but that choice is always there. no paths are bound. and seeing xie lian learn that? what an honor it was to be by his side to see that. every book makes my heart fill with xie lian more and more. and with that, i'm off to the final book.

He went back outside to pack up his stuff, rolling up the straw mat on the ground very seriously, and tied it with the sword before carrying both on his back. The white silk band wrapped around his wrist nuzzled secretly and Xie Lian patted it, righting the bamboo hat on his head.
"Fine. Don't pay. I'll go busking."

Gracias.

This volume was a lot shorter compared to the rest but it definitely left a strong impact. It accounts the period after Xie Lian's country was no more and he was banished from the heaven realm as a punishment. It was difficult to swallow all the betrayals, humiliation, calamities, pain, loss, and grief he had to go through. I found myself constantly crying during the heaviest moments. I thought I could guess what was going to happen but I was pretty far off. This book had twists and developments I would have never predicted and left me speechless... but I was rooting for Xie Lian to do the right thing through it all because I know he's just that resilient and good. The author did a great job of exploring the good and bad sides that lies in everyone.

TW: Horror scenes, blood, and gore.

Manhua Vol. 4, Ep. 42-53
Amidst their quest to gather shanyue ferns (antidote for the snake-scorpion bite), Xie Lian's party was captured by ghost soldiers and brought to the Sinner's Pit to be thrown off and fed to the resentful spirits. Protecting the humans in their party, Xie Lian volunteered to go first but San Lang jumped off instead and Xie Lian fell in his attempt to catch him.

Clingy Xie Lian: "San Lang, come back. I'll stop being afraid once you're back here."
Equally clingy San Lang: "Don't worry. I'll only be gone for a bit. I'll see you again soon." (then, proceeded to jump off the pit and eventually caught Xie Lian... *sigh)

Catch
(gif from Lan Xichen is bae's Tumblr)

Another part where I prefer the novel's longer version and why I decided to still read the novel even after I read the manhua and watched the donghua.

Xie Lian (manhua): "When getting involved with someone else, what matters is the nature of the person and your compatibility with them. Thus, if you like someone, why bother asking their identity?"
Xie Lian (novel): "Forming a friendship should depend on how well two people hit it off and how well their personalities match, not their identities. If I like you, you could be a beggar and I'd still like you. If I dislike you, you could be the emperor and I'd still dislike you. Shouldn't it be like that? It's simple logic so whether you're human or not is irrelevant."

BEST SCENES a.k.a. Hua Cheng being his awesome self
Ep. 44-45: San Lang in his true skin (Hua Cheng's true appearance) catching Xie Lian's fall into the Sinner's Pit. Xie Lian scolding San Lang for jumping off and telling him it doesn't matter whether he's human or not. (awwe)😍

Gotcha Gege

Ep. 52: The reappearance of Hua Cheng's umbrella during the rain of snakes.😲😳

I'm dead

P.S. More Hua Cheng faces because I can't get enough.😏🤭
Hua Xie
(San Lang looking awfully smug hearing Xie Lian's old fake name was Hua Xie, sharing the same surname as Hua Cheng, San Lang's true name.)😂

(reread)

What happens when, Xie Lian, a former renowned crown prince, an esteemed god and a man with a privileged past is abruptly thrust into a world of poverty and filth?

This volume transcends the realm of mere literary discomfort; it metamorphoses into a crucible of torment that lingers relentlessly, a tempest of emotions that storms through my very being. The anguish that surged within me was not a constant barrage but rather a furious tempest, punctuated with fierce intensity, infiltrating my very bones and slithering through the labyrinth of my heart in agonizingly steady rhythms.

It demanded an unyielding reservoir of my perseverance to witness my cherished comfort character endure such cataclysmic tragedies. Yet, despite the emotional maelstrom, I staunchly believe that it was an indispensable crucible for his profound character development. Xie Lian, born into a world of privilege, had never truly fathomed the visceral pangs of poverty until now. This profound encounter served as an epiphany, a luminescent prism that transformed his perspective, enabling him to perceive the world through the lens of a common man. He emerged from this crucible, a phoenix rising from the ashes, his spirit tempered, yet unbowed, despite the weight of the world upon his shoulders.

“Thus, Xie Lian understood. No one would give him a hand to help pull him up.
He laid there for a good while before he crawled up himself.”

Xie Lian is, by far, the most complex and well-written character I have read about. People often tire of protagonists with high moral grounds and righteous conscience, but I absolutely love it when they are done right, and Xie Lian is epitome of that. He's so endearing and likable that the instinct to shield him from ridicule and any kind of peril was strenuous in my heart–an aching need. If I had a dollar for everytime tears rolled down my cheeks, I'd be a billionaire. Xie Lian will always be the one character I love the most, the one who pulls my heartstrings sporadically and lingers in my recollections till I die. Though flawed, Xie Lian had always been precocious, composed, and optimistic. My heart throbbed witnessing him transfigure into someone he never wanted to be–the opposite of what he really is.

On the very brink of committing a justified mass genocide, all it took for him to not give in to his darkest desires was a modicum act of kindness...the bare minimum.

By one person.

though this book has just a few chapters, as compared to the rest of the series, it hits the hardest because it showed the downfall of the once beloved crown prince. with the white-clothed calamity back into the picture, xie lian doesn't know what he could do anymore. add onto that is the immense pressure to provide for the family when they are all on the run. in this book, readers get the scenes where mu qing and feng xin left xie lian.

the humiliation, uncertainty, heartbreak and devastation just surrounded xie lian in this entire book. he has no motivation to do anything anymore. he has lost all faith in himself, and the white-clothed calamity is there to take advantage of that.

regardless, hua cheng makes an appearance as a ghostly fire, to stay beside xie lian while he was down. we've seen his unwavering love towards his only one in the previous books at different age. similarly, in a different period of time, this is hua cheng when he was wuming, a little ghost powerless to save his beloved.

also, the book contains lots of trigger warnings such as violence, suicide, etc. it's one of the toughest parts to read of the entire tian guan ci fu series because i read the part of the thousand cuts.

despite everything, xie lian still held onto who he is innately. yes, he has fallen from the graces of heaven and the people. after losing everything he has ever known, it takes a lot for someone to remain unflinchingly themselves. through his actions, people know that xie lian's selfless and willing to sacrifice himself for the betterment of others. that's what makes him such a charming character but also, a little stupid for willingly letting people take advantage of that side of him.

books in the series:
1. crimson rain sought flower: ✰✰✰✰
2. the god-pleasing crown prince: ✰✰✰✰
3. no paths are bound: ✰✰✰✰
4. white-clothed calamity: ✰✰✰✰
5. heaven official’s blessing: ✰✰✰✰✰

pain. pure and agonising pain.
“Help me.

Help me, help me, help me.

Help me, help me, help, help, help, help, help, help, help, help, help, help, help, help, help, help me!!!!

It hurts, it hurts, it hurts, it hurts, it hurts, it hurts...it hurts, it hurts, it hurts, it hurts, it hurts, it hurts, it hurts, it hurts, it hurts, it hurts, IT HURTS IT HURTS IT HURTS IT HURTS IT HURTS IT HURTS IT HURTS IT HURTS IT HURTS IT HURTS IT HURTS IT HURTS IT HURTS IT HURTS IT HURTS!!!!!”

this book showed us how the xie lian we know came to be. he wasn’t always that cheerful, positive and full of good intentions person; there was a time where he endured many hardships, did bad things he’d come to regret, swayed between good and bad. i am grateful i got to see all of these sides of him.

ruoye, fangxin, the bamboo hat, the two cursed shackles and the cute habit of naming dishes all came from that period of his life; it makes everything so much more special.

xie lian is such a loveable character. i’ve truly felt for him, suffered with him, wanted to protect and avenge him. he undeniably is one of the strongest person out there.

that temple scene was… extremely painful. i feel so sorry for him, he truly went through so much…

watching him get stripped of all of his dignity, being humiliated, getting hurt over and over again was one of the hardest things i have experienced. nothing could’ve prepared me for this.
xie lian must’ve felt so abandoned, seeing everyone he cared for deeply leave him; his parents, feng xin, mu qing… that one person who came to help him was so important to him; he finally felt seen and he mattered for someone again.

“Just one person was enough!”

what hurts me more is that hua cheng has always stayed by his side; whether it be as that little kid he saved from falling, a soldier in the xianle army, a cute little ghost fire, a black-clad warrior, to the hua cheng he now knows.

“To die in battle for you is my greatest honour.”

his love and loyalty for xie lian is utterly precious.

book 4 was a very necessary one, as we got to witness xie lian’s development as a person. yes, it was painful. yes, i felt like dying with every single line i read. will i ever be okay again after having read this? probably not. but i am still immensely honored and glad i had the change to accompany xie lian in a way through this hard time in his life.

Your Highness, I am forever your most devoted believer.

Another flashback novel, set immediately book 2 (the first flashback novel). This one works for me because there is so much new information and development in this novel, things that Xie Lian hasn't revealed in previous books. For example, he said during the dice game (Revenant of Empty Words arc) that his only regret is his second ascension and gave no more details. Well, prepare for the details!

A very heart-breaking novel as Xie Lian hits the darkest point of his life. But also a good illumination of why Xie Lian trusts others (San Lang, Qingxuan, etc.) more than his two childhood friends. Wuming was A+++.

5/5 would recommend.

this entire book was angst. i am not joking. pain.

listen to All Of My Life by Park Won, it perfectly encapsulates the sadness and tragedies in this book

OKAY SPOILERY PARTS NOW

white cloth calamity... you're so evil what the hell. HOW??? HOW COULD YOU DO THAT TO YOU'RE FAVORITE PERSON???? the way hua cheng said that the worst thing that has ever happened to him was having to watch his loved one be ridiculed in front of him without being able to do anything about it... when I first read that in the third I was like oh hearing stories about Xie Lian and stuff BUT NO HE ACTUALLY WITNESSED IT. HELD IN THE GRASP OF WHITE CLOTH CALAMITY AND THAT WAS THE MOMENT HE BECAME A GHOST.... the screaming when xie lian said it wasn't him but felt like it was coming from himself, and it was actually hua cheng...

the way the situations were crafted in this book, mu qing and that feng guy I forgot his name, they really were stuck in their situation. i feel like I couldn't not paint them as the bad guy, it's a grey area...

when white cloth calamity said that xie lian's last believer was gone, that broke my heart.

This was the shortest but made me cry the most, definitely the most heartbreaking and the most painfully beautiful. I wanna slap the past me when I started it because I thought it would be useless and boring since it stopped the present story in such an important event, but now I'm glad the writer made a pause to concentrate on this part of Xie lian's (and San Lang's) story. Truly terrific.
