When a body is discovered inside a locked apartment on Manhattan’s upper west side, former homicide detective Mike Cole is called on to investigate. But this is no ordinary murder, the victim is burned from the inside and there’s a smoldering pentagram in the hardwood floor. Soon others start to die under similar circumstances and rumors of a Faustian bargain circulate.
To solve the mystery, Cole joins forces with Jessica Mackenzie, an autistic FBI agent with a penchant for the supernatural whose unorthodox methods could break the case wide open or get them both killed. These two unlikely partners will have to learn to work together if they are going to uncover the truth behind the sinister deaths plaguing New York.

I read this entire book without realizing it was written by one of my favorite authors, William Miller. It just goes to show that a talented writer will always capture the imagination of the reader. MacKenzie and Cole Mysteries are now on my list of must-read books. This quirky duo of a former detective and an autistic FBI agent working to solve a bizarre crime with satanic overtones is not what kept me reading. Agent Jessica MacKenzie is a wonderful character who is autistic. Author William Miller does excellent writing to explain the condition and the ability of some autistic individuals to function in a productive and often extraordinary manner. If you've watched any episode of the television show 'The Good Doctor', then you have an idea of MacKenzie's abilities in this story. In both cases, these characters do not reflect the many individuals and their families who have suffered from autism in it's many shades. However, this fictional character does shine the light on the fact that some individuals think and see things differently. A good observation everyone should remember. In this story, working with MacKenzie is a former detective, Mike Cole, who, through a personal tragedy, has damaged his career. He now finds himself without his gold detective shield and is demoted to walking a beat. A rare opportunity avails itself for him to redeem his former status, but with one caveat. Officer Cole must team up with FBI Agent Jessica MacKenzie to solve a bizarre case involving a female who was found burned to death and a pentagram burned into the floor next to the victim. It gets very interesting from this point on!
Recently finished his latest Noble book and at the end, there was an excerpt for The Devil His Due… and I was hooked. Went to Amazon only to find I’d already bought this back in 2021. WTH?!?! - I’m a FIFO, and binge, Kindle reader and somehow, this got lost in my queue. Anyway, loved it. Great plot & pace, even better-the characters. Cole: cool; Mackenzie: priceless. Nailed her to a T. Now onto Book 2 (remember, I binge series I like). Well done Bill.
I really liked the characters, kind of a mix between the tv shows Castle & Bones ~ with a twist! The descriptions were great ~ I felt I used more senses in imagining than usual and I really saw them in context ~ Mackenzie’s journal pages were inspired; they enhanced the first-person narrative with glimpses of her, too, not just Cole. A good read! I'll be looking for more of this pair!
Enjoyed this read, especially the insight into the mInd of an autistic person and the effect it had on the quirky relashionship between the cop and the FBI Agent. The ending leaves the door wide open for continued relationship between these two. I am looking forward to the next offerin in this series.
I loved the dynamic tension of the two main characters with one of the, the FBI agent, being on the spectrum for autism. I’ve never read any novel that addressed autism with its limitations and special gifts. Marvelous story.
This is the first book in a new series by this author. I have read a lot of his books and they are all great. This one is no exception. The characters are all great and believable. The story weaves around before the great finish. I’ll be reading the next book in the series very soon.
THIS IS THE 1ST IN A SERIES AFTER READING I'M A BIT CONFUSED WHY WAS IT WAS CALLED A PARANORMAL MYSTERY. I KEPT WAITING FOR THE PARANORMAL TO COME AND I COULDN'T SEE IT AT ALL. I LIKED THE MYSTERY PAT EVEN IF THE CHARACTERS SEEMED A LITTLE OFF. BOTH OF THEM WERE VERY STRANGE IN THEIR OWN WAY. I HAVE THE NEXT BOOK AND I WANT RO SEE HOW THAT ONE GOES BEFORE I GIVE UP. I DID LIKE THE PICTURES AND WISH THERE HAD BEEN A FEW MORE, IT MADE THE BOOK DIFFERENT AND SOMETHING NEW TO SEE INCORPORATED IN THE STORY. ;D
I was unable to stop reading this book. It is almost 3:00AM and I just finished it! Tried to stop at the half way mark, put it down and turned off the light…grabbed my pillow and shut my eyes…..could NOT sleep….had to finish reading it! The premise is extremely intriguing, the characters are extremely interesting, and the story is INCREDIBLE! I’ve enjoyed Miller’s other series but LOVE this one the most! So I strongly recommend starting this early in the day….a day in which you don’t have to do anything else and just ENJOY this book!
It was a pretty good story. Although there were a few grammar errors and that's why this story only gets 3 stars. I'll continue to read this series. I just hope they do a better job of proof reading.
