Developer Relations: How to Build and Grow a Successful Developer Program

Rate this book
Increasingly, business leaders are either looking to start a new developer program at their company or looking to increase the impact of their existing DevRel program. In this context, software developers are finally recognized as legitimate decision makers in the technology buying process, regardless of the size of their organization. New companies are appearing with the sole purpose of making tools for developers, and even companies whose primary focus was elsewhere are waking up to the developer opportunity. Even as the need and demand for DevRel has grown, there are still re-occurring challenges for DevRel leaders.

It is these challenges that this book addresses, covering all aspects of a DevRel program. It is an essential reference to professionalize the practice of developer relations by providing you with strategic, repeatable, and adoptable frameworks, processes, and tools, including developer segmentation and personas, and developer experience frameworks. In The Developer Relations Playbook, you'll find the answers to the following questions:

How do we convince stakeholders to support a program?
How do we go about creating a program?
How do we make developers aware of our offer?

How do we stand out from the crowd?
How do we get developers to use our products?
How do we ensure developers are successful using our products?
How do we measure success?
How do we maintain the support of our stakeholders?
After reading this book you'll have a clear definition of what developer relations is, the type of companies that engage in DevRel, and the scope and business models involved.

What's under the DevRel umbrella

Developer relations is an umbrella term that can mean different things to different people. This book is a great look at the entirety of it. Written as a guide for someone looking to connect with developers to get them using the product, it is great for anyone who wants the bigger picture of what is important at all stages of the developer journey.

Like others have said, this book is essential reading for DevRel practitioners. It offers actionable actions and advice regardless of where in your DevRel journey you are: starting up a new program, exploring different specialties in DevRel or scaling up a successful program.
My favourite highlights of the book are:
- There are 4 main areas of Developer Relations: Community, Developer Experience, Developer Success, Developer Marketing and Developer Education. Community is the base on which all other DevRel efforts rest, so should not be overlooked.
- Developers are a tricky marketing audience. They need to be enticed by "the art of the possible", engaging their imaginations by showing them what they could build with developer tooling.
- Use cases illustrate common uses of a product, while case studies demonstrate a real world customer implementation of a product. Both are important to help developers scale with technologies.
- DevRel are part of Sales. Like modern Sales, they help solve their users problems by supporting the Community, improvind Developer Experience and providing Developer Education.
- Developer programs need to be aligned with company goals. Their metrics should be reported in the same way other departments do. This makes it easier to communicate value to stakeholders.

I definitely learned loads from this book and highly recommend that all DevRels read it.

Loved it! Aside from being a good read, it's also an important "reference manual" that you'd be using throughout your DevRel journey. Highly recommend having it on your shelf!
