A Guide to Understanding Classical Christian Education: 100 Common Questions

Rate this book
This book answers common questions about classical Christian education in the areas of history, philosophy, Christianity, classical terms, grammar, logic, rhetoric, parenting, graduates, government involvement, and quotations. It is intended to benefit individuals who are new to the classical Christian education movement as well-as those who have been involved in classical Christian education for several decades. Having a shared understanding of answers to common questions unifies our individual mental models, clarifies divergent assumptions, and strengthens mutual beliefs so we can walk together toward a unified mission for the good of our children and the glory of God alone.

Quick read in a question and answer format, that gave a very basic overview of CCE. While nothing was particularly new to me I appreciated the answer to question 80: what type of students thrive and Classical Christian schools?
“Hard-working and joyful students with supportive parents that value education and are deeply committed to the Christian faith tend to thrive in Classical Christian schools, while students who are unmotivated to learn, frequently complain about teachers, and make excuses for poor results, tend to struggle academically or socially.”
I think the most subtle but meaningful sentence was: “The classical and Christian approach to education is most effective when it is fully embraced as a way of life (77).

Being new to the idea of classical Christian education, I don’t really have anything to compare this to, but I can say that this little book clearly explains how classical Christian education is different than modern public education, and makes the case that a proper education is absolutely central to the future flourishing of our society, and for the glory of God. “Education is not a subject, and it does not deal in subjects. It is instead the transfer of a way of life.” — Chesterton.

Clear, simple, straightforward introduction, especially for the uninitiated. Format is very accessible, more like a quick reference guide. Great for prospective parents.
