This is the story of the kids who built a world-class church - Heart of God Church started as a divine experiment to build a prototype Youth Church. Now it has developed into a proof of concept that Youths can build a STRONG CHURCH.
GenerationS is a mindset-shifting, heart-changing book that shows you how to raise up generations of young people in your church to build His kingdom.
After over 20 years, this youth church, operated by youths, for youths to reach youths, still has an average age of 22.
Bonus #1: Contributors and 'Inside Stories' Read 1,000+ word contributions from 13 other contributing writers that provide an 'inside look' and 360º view of HOGC. Director of Global Relations, a Westerner's perspective on an Asian church Board member in his 60s, on what older people do in a youth church Chief of Staff, on what goes on inside the Senior Pastors' Office Head of Global Partnerships, on what co-senior pastoring looks like
Bonus #2: Comes with Digital Companion Go beyond the chapters! Access 100+ bonus content and interactive materials when you scan QR codes from within the book.
1. The book is co-authored by Pastor How and Pastor Lia (pioneers of Heart of God Church, Singapore). Through the book, you will see both their perspectives – you can hear their belief in youth and generations through the pages.
2. This book is not for profit. All royalties and proceeds from the book go toward the movement that sows back into the lives of young people. 👍🏽👍🏽
3. The end of each chapter is marked by contributions and 'Inside Stories' including those from Lisa Bevere, Bishop Dale Bronner, Matt Redman, Dr Robi Sonderegger and John Bevere. I don't think I've seen another book giving so much real estate to contributors. But I'm not complaining, it's a novel and refreshing idea to have these thought-leaders weigh in on the subject matter.
4. The book is easy to read, and there's a digital companion that supplements the reading experience. But don't mistake it for a light read. The bite-sized principles are extremely weighty, you might find yourself rethinking how you do church and ministry.
5. The stories. I love the stories of young people. By the end of the book, I found myself rooting for all the young world-changers. From the homegrown pastors to the homeless youth, I'm cheering everyone in Heart of God Church on!!!
6. GenerationS Vol 1 ends with a crazy cliffhanger. I heard Vol 2 is already on the way, and I can't wait. In the meantime, I will do a second reading of Vol 1 to make sure I missed nothing out.
7. Ending thoughts: I find that many Christian books paint a rosy picture of God's goodness, but rarely do I find a read like Pastor How and Pastor Lia's where it's kept it raw and real.
While many speakers focus on their tours and exploits around the globe, the authors share transparently about their detours in pastoral work and ministry... I can appreciate the refreshing candour.
Yet, despite the uphill challenges, the authors' unwavering faith in God and commitment to Generations kept them going on. 🙌🏽
What a unique book! I've been a christian for 12 years now and am currently leading 2 Connect Groups of 30. I've read many christian books (ah I'm horrible, I don't finish all of them) but I must say this is such a unique piece. (Yes, I finished this 👍🏻)
Even the starting page is so different. I love the handwritten message for the readers (: It makes it feel like the authors really want to speak to us.
I don't think I've ever read a book with QR code in its content. I love how it leads to videos/bite sized sermons and stories.
All in all, an inspiring piece! Can't wait for volume 2 already!
When I first picked this book up, there was a weight in my heart.
No, not the kind of weight that sinks our hearts when we pick up yet another school reading... but there was a sense of enormity and gravity as I held this book in my hands. In my hands was the legacy and history of a 20-year project... I could not wait to start. And as I flipped the pages, my heart stirred with every sentence and every punchline. Page after page, I was brought on a journey through the highs and lows of Heart of God Church. Here, a history lesson. There, a heartfelt testimony. Bam, a timeless biblical truth. Every page was vividly written, thoughtfully structured and movingly engaging. I was hooked. "Page-turner" might be an overused word on this platform. But in my opinion, no book fits this description better.
I'm sincerely blown away by how Pastor How and Pastor Lia spent their lives building their church. It is evident that the principles shared here are borne out of decades of experience. They are not just catchy slogans or headline-grabbing pointers. Every principle is well thought out, every teaching is backed by stories of real-life examples.
When we visit Heart of God church, many will see the screens, the lights, and hear the world-class sermons... But it is the changed lives and the stories you read in this book that are the essence of this church. These are the stories that make HOGC such a unique place. The stories are proof that young people CAN have a purpose in God. One that is beyond the lures of social media and pressures of society.
I loved what both pastors wrote, that HOGC is "a divine experiment, heaven's pilot project, and earth's guinea pig". This book is evidence that this experiment has borne results, and I would strongly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in sowing into young people, growing churches, and building organisations. Pick this book up if you're willing to pay the price to build GenerationS.
A book that will change the way we think about the church. Want to see your church grow? Once again we are faced with the fact that growth only happens when we are ready to challenge the way we do things. Pastor Lia and Pastor How have committed themselves for youth and it can be seen in every page of this book. “Young people are the church of today”
Feel privileged as I had a chance to see HOGC in action at the Chiangmai conference few years back
Heart-warming. Mind-stimulating. Tear-jerking. Awe-inspiring. The list goes on... This is hands down the best book I have ever read! It is easy to read yet so beautifully crafted. You know that every word was lovingly chosen and every story was carefully written.
Reading GenerationS is like journeying through the last 20+ years with pastor How and pastor Lia to see what it takes to build a Strong Youth Church. You see the victories but also the battles and the heartache. Yet, at the end of the day, pastors How and Lia's passion for God and convictions for the church will just leave you challenged to give God your best! At certain points in the book, the anointing of God was so strong and it felt like a personal time of decision with Him.
But the coolest thing about GenerationS is that it's more than a book. It is the documentation of what is happening IRL in Heart of God Church. I first came to HOGC almost 9 years ago as a shy 14-year-old with no abilities and a lot of anxiety. But my pastors and leaders poured so much belief, love and discipleship into me. They gave me opportunities to lead a connect group and head one of the social media departments. The stories in the book are just some of thousands of young people who have found their destinies in God. This book is a MUST READ.
"Don't just pass down money but mission. Don't just pass down valuables but values." This line really stood out to me as I read the first few pages. It captures the heart of why this book is written - it is a legacy for future generations. I was so moved to know that the authors meant the book not for profit. All royalties and proceeds go to the GenerationS fund - a fund to advance its cause.
As a first generation Christian in my household, this book puts a vision and responsibility in me to build the church for the next generation and to believe in youths.
Additionally, the story and journey of this church and its Pastors are testament of God's faithfulness, and that the most ordinary people can do extraordinary things for God. I was reminded of God's call for my own life and to keep holding on to it.
The many raw, unfiltered life stories of youths told in the book made me tear, smile and desire to live my life for God and others all over again. This book stirs up the heart, equips the mind and ignites the spirit of a Christian to give his/her best and all to God.
I've never seen a church as passionate to build, grow and believe in young people ... but HOGC and their Senior Pastors say it's possible. Not just for them, but for ALL of us! Loving every principle shared here:
"Youth are Leaders TODAY, Not Just Tomorrow" - Pastor Lia "Don't just think local or global, think Generational. Think GenerationS." - Pastor How (Can I get an AMEN???)
I was completely hooked reading this book! Went from the pioneering days, to the Singpost days, all the way to the Imaginarium days ... what a journey ... a Journey Of A Dream!! (You've got to read to find out what these all mean!)
As a church leader with dreams to come on full-time in church ... I am absolutely looking forward to this! If this is how full-time ministry and building a church is like, COUNT ME IN!
Caution: Not for the faint-hearted!! Only when you're ready for your heart to be expanded, and spirit to be stirred. Then, begin this read with a heart of expectation for God to move in you, and through you..
Right at the start, the preface by the co-authors, Ps Tan Seow How & Ps Lia already had me in tears.. Never have I heard the voices of Pastors so humble in their ways, yet so proud of what God has done through them and the church they both pioneered - Heart of God Church. While reading the book, it's like you’re sitting, listening and learning from them personally. Their passion, obedience to God, and relentless belief in young people and GenerationS echo loud through the pages.
As you can see - it's hard to read on without jotting notes (hehe) All the godly wisdom and principles to glean from! The teachings, the life testimonies, videos (accessible via QR code - an accompanying digital companion) take you on the journey with Ps How and Ps Lia..
When I reached the end of the book, I felt my mindset shifting and elevating.. A vision is not limited to 1 individual or 1 generation saved, but many GenerationS after! My spirit is revving to go!
"Come fly with us." - Ps How Yes, amen and amen! Count me on board to build the church younger and stronger!!
"Youth are leaders of today, not tomorrow!" This simple but game-changing mindset is awe-inspiring in theory and revolutionary in practice. The authors, pastor How and pastor Lia take us through the journey of fighting for and believing in youths, not just once or twice, but again and again... and once again. It's enough to make you wish you grew up in this church!
But the pastors' complimenting voices take us along for the ride through the insanity, joy, and exhilaration of the kids who built a world-class church from Day 1. A refreshing, honest, and heartwarming recount of pastor How and pastor Lia's life work, this book is THE BOOK for those that have a heart for the youth. And don't just read it for yourself but watch it all come to life in the digital companion that takes you through many insider stories and resources.
Don't mistake this book for a simple, feel-good read either. This book made me laugh, cry, and challenged me all in one go! A must-read for everyone whose heart is stirred not only for the current or next generation but for all the GenerationS to come!
Part leadership lessons, part personal journey and part context of the church today – this is an amazing all-round book for any pastoral leader (or one to be) in their church!!
There are different perspectives about building a strong youth church, from the co-authors (Pastor How & Pastor Lia) and even well-known authors like John & Lisa Bevere. But what’s really interesting to me are the insider stories told by the authors, their daughter, church pastors and staff – they are candid accounts of life in a youth church!
Also loved the written and video testimonies (in the digital companion 🤯). I closed the book feeling so moved to make a difference for others!
Overall a mindset-shifting book, so much of the principles shared can be applied to my personal journey as a leader. Worth a second read!!
Honestly, reading this book was akin to going on a 3-day Christian conference for me (if not better!). Seriously, 13 other contributing writers with 1000+ word contributions on top of what both authors had already penned? They gave me pretty solid, all-rounded perspectives on how it IS possible to build a youth church on fire for Jesus.
May I also add that the whole reading experience is super immersive! (Don’t be mistaken, I am not talking about a 3D movie!) The book comes with a digital companion that brings the concepts and stories inside the book to life. It is the first time I am coming across such a function in a printed book. For example, you can experience the electrifying atmosphere of a typical weekend service which the authors speak of, together with video testimonies of how people experienced their breakthroughs in God ... and so much more!
This book is as real as it gets. I encourage everyone to read this with more than an open mind but do allow God to speak to you on the areas you can change as you do church and ministry. Seriously, I think this book is applicable and beneficial even for people outside the church and ministry. I am going to recommend this book to my colleagues in the office.
In summary, I believe that this book will bless and challenge you as much as it did for me.
Honestly, I am rather sad that the book ended on a cliffhanger 😭 That said, I really cannot wait for Volume 2 to be out next summer!
Honestly I would have thought the category of this book should be placed in the "Fantasy" section - had I not been living the past 13 years as a part of this story. Having grown up in this very church, it feels very surreal to see our everyday lives being written down into stories.
As a teenager, I didn't really realise the - for lack of a better word - insanity needed to pull this off. I know this story from the perspective of a youth all too well - and I'm grateful for it! However, reliving it through the eyes of the Pastors brings the journey to a whole new level.
I believe that anyone reading this will definitely gasp, tear, and celebrate as they live vicariously through the authors in this journey.
Don't be mistaken. This book isn't on "how I preach better sermons?", or "how can I grow my ministry?", or even "how can I bring revival?". Instead, it removes the "I" completely, and focuses on the next generation and beyond. If you can't believe kids can build a world-class church, then this is definitely for you.
This is one of the most interactive books I have ever read! The colored photos and Digital Companion including videos are so helpful. It is like personally going through the journey and seeing how God moves!
Really appreciate the authors Pastor How and Pastor Lia are so real to share their experiences - you can hear faith, passion, and even humor altogether. There are other contributors in this book, and it is interesting to hear their different perspectives.
"Legacy is not what you leave behind. It is WHO you leave behind." - Pastor How This book will make you think beyond yourself and your generation. The principles shared are timeless and so useful for those who are involved in youth ministries!
So, this book is a must-read! It will inspire all of us to believe in young people and join the cause of GenerationS!
So glad I chanced upon this book. As a ministry staff leading various ministries, this book was an absolute paradigm shift.
The heart, wisdom, belief, vision and passion for Jesus of the the authors and the members in this church (in all the tear jerking stories) must be the greatest testament of God’s heart for young people I’ve EVER seen in my travels all over the world!!
The authors, Pastor How and Pastor Lia, invested their lives into a group of 9 youths and that blossomed into a 5000 strong vibrant youth church. Never seen anything like it. It has given me the faith and vision that God can use me to do the same in my ministry too. Best of all, the book is full of practical principles and stories on how to do so!
Having read this book and the extensive contributions within, from the likes of Matt Redman, John and Lisa Bevere…absolutely looking forward to visit the church one day.
(Can’t believe the authors are not taking profits and royalties from the book too…)
"GenerationS are not replacements. GenerationS are reinforcements."
This book will change your outlook in life - especially in a world where you're groomed to think about MY career, MY success, MY family - right here right now. Food for thought: instead of thinking about your generation - why not think GenerationS? Instead of living for yourself in the moment in this #YOLO and #FOMO world, why not live for others? Pass down values, not only valuables.
What I really liked is that these philosophies come alive through the heartfelt stories of many youths and vintage youths. You'll be able to see that this is not just a catchphrase - it's a way of life. It's not just a Sunday Church thing, it permeates the way you act and even think.
The moment you open the covers of the book, you will see the church and with that, you will probably already be blown away. But it is only after I continued turning the pages that I eventually understood the blood, sweat and tears the Pastors of HOGC have poured in to building the people.
As a Christian leader leading Youth Adults, there is a page in Chapter 4 that spoke to me because it is the same season that I am currently facing yet I feel hopeful about it because this book encouraged me so much. I love how transparent the authors are about building a church from just a call from God and it's beautiful to see how everything unfolded over time.
PS. The QR codes are additional bonuses that made me enjoy the book so much more. Believe you will be blessed too.
As a first-generation Christian, I felt so amazed to read how God has moved through the youths in the church! It really inspires me to pass down the heart and wisdom that both Pastor How and Pastor Lia have pioneered in Heart of God church to the many generations to come!
Also, really appreciate the curated content in the Digital Companion that comes along with the book, watched through them during my commutes! Whether you are a Pastor, a leader, or even a new Christian, go get the book!
I am a product of GenerationS - Came to Heart of God Church at 14, and now at 30, I head the Translation Department in church, and am also studying for my Masters of Divinity in Oral Roberts University. All these can only happen because of the countless years of belief and training from Pastor How and Pastor Lia! In fact, instead of going for the Masters themselves, they chose to give this opportunity to a group of us in church. This book is a must read for all pastors, leaders, members who want to build a Strong Church!
This isn't your typical book. This isn't your casual Sunday read either.
This book signifies 20 years of church pioneering, building and sacrifice. Reading GenerationS, I was taken on a spiritual journey with pastor How and pastor Lia back to where it all started. A small rental space but it was packed with big ambitious dreams for God.
More than the spiritual significance embodied, the catchy slogans and words written aren't cheap and shallow words. It took 20 years of breakthroughs, heartache and experiencing everything in between to its fullest to be able to pen these words down. These wisdoms are still being lived out evidently through the senior pastors and the members of Heart of God Church. As you read this book, you will begin to understand its spiritual significance.
This book has been written and designed in excellence. I was personally blown away by the interactive functions laced throughout the book. I have never seen anything like this before (get the book to understand). This book has shifted my mindset on what church building is like. The many principles shared not just apply to church building, it too is practical and applicable towards our personal lives.
This book makes you want to believe in the next generation and the next. It will stir your heart and provoke your current way of thinking. If you want to grow your church and even yourself stronger, this book has it all. A MUST READ!
You know that "old man yells at cloud" gif from The Simpsons? That was basically me - a crusty "old" Millennial - until I read this book by Pastor Tan Seow How and Pastor Cecilia Chan, the two co-founders of Heart of God Church in Singapore. What makes this church special is that the youth ministry *is* the church - the 14-year-olds lead the 13-year-olds, the 15-year-olds run the media room, and the teenagers worship lead in the main service. The stories & principles about empowering young people are both touching and thought-provoking, even if you're not a pastor. You will see young people in a totally different way after reading this!
On a personal note, I grew up in a church that didn't have many people my age, so I wasn't too involved beyond just helping out with some duties here and there when my parents asked me to. Naturally, I stopped going to church when I left home for college, and only returned years later, when I was well into adulthood. If you can relate, then I'd especially recommend Ch5, "One Generation From Extinction - Christianity in Crisis", which poignantly and pointedly analyzes why churches are losing young people, as well as how to win them back.
This book also made me take a good hard look at the extent to which I am chasing my own dreams vs. making the dreams (especially young people) come true. And because it's packed with so many anecdotes, and written in such a conversational way, it doesn't feel prescriptive or preachy - even though it's written by two pastors! So whether you're a pastor, a ministry leader, a lay person, or even just someone looking for a new book, GenerationS Volume 1 will show you how to not only grow your church/ministry/organisation bigger, but how to de-age it and grow it stronger.
Absolutely must-read for youth ministry leadership and generational thinking. Even if you are not working with youths, read this book too anyway—because it challenges you to reignite your passion for God, build the church selflessly, and empower others as leaders.
The stories here beat the heart of God. I can’t tell you enough how amazing they are. So you got to read them for yourself!
There’s the journey of HOGC from its humble beginnings. The heartfelt and raw accounts from Pastor How and Pastor Lia. Both incredible leaders and role models to emulate after. They live out what it means to have the DNA of Jesus for others.
There’s the story of youths who were trusted to run the church (despite the mess). Youths empowered to lead hundreds. Youths whose lives were broken but now changed. All to prove the idea that it is possible to raise up generations of young people to build a world-class church.
Prepare yourself to be WOW-ed. Every concept is more than a quote. It will change your mindset and it will change your heart. There’s no better book to think generational. Now, the world needs to think GenerationS.
This book made me laugh and cry, amazed me, and gave me ideas and inspiration for leadership and ministry!
I love reading books, but I've never come across a book like this before. It's so personal and heartfelt (from the handwritten note from the authors addressed to you, to the moving life stories), fresh and fun (there's emojis, and icons demarcating different voices narrating through the book), yet deeply insightful and thought-provoking.
While it's punchy, easy to read and compelling, I find myself lingering on a page often to let the quotes and principles sink in, and as I reflect on them God starts dropping fresh ideas in my mind. As a full time staff in church, a leader of 15 young adults, and a leader in the digital outreach ministry, this book stirred and touched my heart deeply, and brought me back to the heart of why I do what I am doing for God and church. I felt a sense of connection and empathy with the authors, like they were encouraging and spurring me on in my ministry, when I read about the challenges that they faced, the incredible faith and trust they had in God, and the miraculous breakthroughs they experienced. I found myself taking mental and digital notes of methods they have tried, tested and recommended, and excitedly shared and discussed them with my fellow leaders to see how we can grow and strengthen our group of young adults.
The book even comes with a digital companion with lots of bonus audio-visual content to explore, and when I browsed and watched it I was just blown away by the creativity and proof of young people leading and their lives being transformed. Seeing that what's in the book is not fiction but reality gave me the faith and imagination to dream that this is possible for my own ministry! I highly recommend this book and I've already bought 4 copies to give to my friends, family, and those I know doing youth work as I'm absolutely sure they will be blessed and impacted by it! Read this book today and be prepared for it to transform your heart and ministry!
In summary, this book includes moments that make you want to: - laugh 😂 - cry 😭 - drop everything and pray 🙏🏻 (Note: this list is non exhaustive!!!)
It pushes me to the edge of my seat. Every chapter gets me thinking, "What comes next?". Or "What's the next moment that's going to make me go 😮🤯🥲?".
Don't be mistaken. It's not an action-packed movie - no Ironman whizzing around or Spiderman swinging from building to building. It is simply Pastor How and Pastor Lia's REAL and RAW journey of how they built HOGC.
Side note: I am not one who is able sit with a book in my hands for a long time 😬 but mark my words - I really had a hard time putting this book down.
This book is a MUST for all pastors, leaders and christians. There are so few books with the power to influence such a wide audience. As I read, my mind was being transformed by the many church-building principles, and my heart was so warmed by the numerous stories of youths growing up in an environment where they belong, believe and become. One of the youths mentioned was only 15 years old and already leading a group of 43 other youths. She was preaching, worship leading, and discipling other leaders. Mindblown!
As a leader in pastoral ministry for many years, it is hard to find a book that teaches how to build strong christians in ministry. Sometimes it seems that a succssful leader needs to have a great personality and charisma. But that is not the case!! It ought to be more than that! This book tells me, shows me, inspires me, and challenges me to be a better Christian leader for God!
One part that is simply so mindset-shifting - Be a Kingmaker, not just a king. Our next generation leaders should walk in our footsteps, not in our shadow.
I loved how reading the book, gave me an "all-access" pass to witness how much it takes to build a strong church. There's no sugar coating of the effort, tears and hard work (along with faith and prayers) it took over the span of 20 years, to get to where they are right now.
Just as how aptly the co-authors have put it right from the start - this book, I believe will be that additional tool that will help many churches join in the escalator run for GenerationS. And what's not to love, when there is also a digital companion that complements all that this book hold!
One of the must-read books for all Christian Pastors and leaders! With the digital companion app, this book comes alive to me. Scan the app and you'll find so many interesting content and videos! You find yourself walking through this journey of the church. If you're someone who is more visual, you will definitely love it!
I've been so blessed and impacted by the principles shared by Pastor How and Pastor Lia. But more than that, I've seen how they live out the principles. This can be seen in all the stories shared in the book.
This book is filled with nuggets of wisdom that will certainly challenge you to view youths differently. I really love the quote "Youths are leaders today, not just tomorrow." The journey that the authors (Pastor Tan Seow How & Pastor Cecilia Chan) took in pioneering a youth church 20 years ago with close to nothing (except a whole lot of fight and faith), in building HOGC to what it is now (a world-class church) is absolutely inspiring. This is a must-read for anyone who is involved in youth work. Even if you're not, i highly encourage you to read this because the principles shared in GenerationS will surely elevate your mindset and shape your perspective in living for a greater cause - the cause to reach down to generations of youths and empower them to do great things for God!
The authors mainly raved about the youths they lead, instead of their efforts to help the youths (which is so amazing, their hearts for youths are truly admirable). They are people who talk the talk and walk the walk, and their love and belief in youths clearly evident from all the testimonies shared (and may i add, were so heartfelt, where some actually moved me to tears!). With that said, i strongly encourage all Christian leaders and pastors to check this gem out! And be prepared to be completely mindblown...
No spoilers, but this is the perfect book that shows how ordinary young people can do extraordinary things for God and live their best lives!
Having only started my Christian journey in Heart of God Church a decade ago, I am so glad to finally be caught up 100% with the history, heritage and heart of my church and pastors.
This book is as interactive as it is impactful! With a Digital Companion, it brings hours of additional content such as behind-the-scenes stories, testimonies, videos and photos that bring depth to the already lively writings in every chapter.
The book also gives the full picture of living passionately for God – the highs and the lows, everything in the middle, and how it all forms a beautiful story when we stick to our God-given dreams.
The best part? That story continues today and we all get to be a part of it.
This book will be picked up again and again by me and many others for GenerationS to come.
This is a must-read book that will change how you perceive young people and build your church! Peppered throughout the book, the stories have brought every principle and concept to life and relevance!
Pastor How and Pastor Lia said in the book — "Don’t use people to build the church. Use the church to build people.” I came to this church when I was 13 and at 23, I was given the opportunity to take my MDiv at Oral Roberts University! I've always been built by Pastor How, Pastor Lia, and the church. And I am just one of the many who have received so so much from their tremendous belief and empowerment!
I cannot recommend this book enough! Oh yes, I LOVE the Digital Companion that comes along with the book too. It adds greatly to the entire reading experience!
