The Sex Coach

Rate this book
Toby

Excerpt

I had no words. My mind was a blank canvas, lit up only by the fact that he was a heartbeat away from me and I had no idea if he’d moved, or I’d unconsciously drifted closer, drawn to him in ways I’d never been drawn to anyone. I licked my lips. Cole’s eyes tracked my tongue. At least, it felt that way. As ever, I had even less of a clue what he was thinking than I did myself. And for once I didn’t want to know. I just wanted to stare at him and pretend that if I leaned in further and our lips brushed, it would be as brand new for him as it was for me.

“Toby.”

“Hmm?”

Cole blew out a breath and closed his hands around my wrists. He rubbed them up and down my forearms. The contact was soothing, but did nothing to calm my racing pulse. Or to put any distance between us. I wanted to kiss him so much I ached. And he was so close. Just an inch more and it would happen. I felt his breath on my cheek, his chest touched mine, and then his lips, so soft at first I thought I’d imagined it.

Then sensation hit, and it was mind-blowing. I swayed on my feet and only Cole’s grip on me kept me upright on my wobbly legs. His kiss was velvet and firm and sweet, and I couldn’t take it. He cupped my face with one hand, his thumb stroking my cheek and every synapse in my brain exploded.

Garrett Leigh's writing just feeds my heart and my mind with happiness.

There's something brutally honest with every book she pens, whether it's the struggles with drug addiction or, like here, where it's more to do with the anxieties of a new job, burgeoning attractions and new fatherhood.

We're back in my second favourite series location - Whisper Farm - with Joe, Harry and the rest of the Skins crew.

But it's five years post Joe and Harry's wedding and it's young Toby, now a strapping 24-year-old, who holds the narrative focus.

His main distraction is new dad Cole, who's moved to the farm to help take some of the classes at Harry's clinic.

Straight away I was in love with this pair. They're both so hesitant around each other, both have their own internal fears and hesitancy that they're fighting alongside their attraction to the other.

This book is way less angsty than some of Garrett's other books, but it's not lacking in any of the emotion she's so good at invoking.

As the story meanders along, Cole and Toby enter into a half friends/half sexual induction relationship which is seriously sweet, seriously hot and hilariously obvious to everyone else - full of feelings 😁

The dramatic tension is driven completely through the fears and anxieties of both men, nothing manufactured or miscommunicated.

With loads of guest appearances from nearly all the rest of the Skins gang, this book is a joyous experience.

The Epilogue is beyond awesome too and just firmly anchors this pair's happy ending.

#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review.

You can't go wrong with a Garrett Leigh. Less angtsy and heavy then some of her reads.

I did read the Skins series so wasn't too lost - though I didn't remember a lot of the dynamics. This one probably is more enjoyable having read that series.

No ridiculous drama.

Likable characters, mostly.

Some good steam.

Solid recommended read.

Before I get started, would you kindly check out the cover…thanks, I’ll wait. Actually, I’ll take another peek myself. Have mercy! It’s sensational. I don’t always fixate on covers, especially when they include one of the MC’s but Leigh knocked this one out of the park. I can’t say the same about the title because it felt…trite. Now that’s probably just me being finicky, but it seemed to imply a simplicity to the story that just isn’t true. If you’re acquainted with the notorious GL specials you are well aware of the complexity and depth in her books. She has a gift for creating intricate characters that entangle you into their labyrinth of heartache and heartwarming moments. It doesn’t seem to matter how large her family grows, I feel deeply connected to each and every one. Almost as if I’ve known them forever and always will. So yeah, most of the secondary cast is familiar and they express this ease and comfort with one another. If you haven’t had the chance to meet them yet, it’s okay. This is a lovely place to scope them out and decide if you want to get up close and personal. I have a sneaking suspicion you will, as I’m feeling some rereads coming on. I absolutely adore all of them. Anyways! Moving on…

What's to like: Back to Toby and Cole. Toby has been around Whisper farms for a long while now. He’s thrilled that everyone has clicked with their soulmates but…surrounded by pairs only highlights his single status. He’s never really alone but he’s lonely. When the new guy shows up on the farm to help with Angelo’s classes he suddenly turns into a blubbering mess. He doesn’t know what it is about Cole but he craves him with a pang of gnawing hunger. Cole is only too happy to enlighten Toby and help sate his carnal appetite. He never expected to return his raw desires but *gulp* does he ever. My favorite part about them is how the ‘teaching’ wasn’t one-sided. Cole may be more experienced sexually but Toby opens Cole’s eyes to a whole new world. A world where he can be a lover, a dad, a friend, and a teacher. I just loved how they evolved from friends…to friends with benefits…to the newest couple on the farm. The angst is considerably lower this round but I didn’t mind in the slightest. There’s so much good stuff!

What's to love: As always, the emotional pull is strong and steady. I loved how Toby was initially the kid or youngest ‘brother’ on the farm. There is a fierce protectiveness in the air that Cole must accept. Oddly enough, when it comes to Toby everything is different. He wants the approval of the guys and ultimately Toby’s affection. Which was not supposed to happen. Cole has priorities or a priority to be specific…his darling daughter. To his startling dismay, he realizes that he doesn’t have to limit his bubble and it truly is okay to let someone else in. His mask of confidence doesn’t work with Toby and before long he relishes this tidbit. He doesn’t want secrets. He doesn’t want to graze the surface. He wants real. He wants roots. Even more precisely, he wants Toby and he wants him permanently. Now the question is, does Toby want the same? *happy wiggle* If you’re willing to tangle with surfing, riding, and passionate falling you’ll find out for yourself.

Beware of: An awakening, both sexually and emotionally. Tentative boundaries that are quickly obliterated and incinerated. And farm boy plus hippie actually make an exceptional pair…I’m talking hot harmony!

This book is for: If you’re searching for a story that seamlessly blends first love, lusty love, and family love…you ought to stop here. And if you’ve read the Skins series I promise you won’t want to miss this!

This book takes place in the ‘Skins’ universe, a few years after we left them, and we meet almost all of the guys at some point. Although Garrett Leigh has written 'The Sex Coach' as a standalone, this might cause some mild confusion for those who haven’t read this series.

Saying that, I think you should be ok, as long as you know Whisper Farm is an animal shelter/health farm with an improportionally high percentage of gay couples. 😁 I actually had great fun revisiting them, most of all Harry and Joe who appear quite a lot.

Toby was just a young lad when we last met him in book 2 of the series, but now he is 24. His “gentle innocence” is charming and paired with his masculine strength definitely a winning combination. Unfortunately, he is also as painfully shy as desperate to end his ‘virgin’ status which is a bit difficult when even getting near a guy makes him break out in nervous sweat.

Enter Cole (a friend of Harry’s) who takes over Angelo’s Pilates classes (that guy's still suffering far too much from his illness!). Dark, monosyllabic and moody, Cole really rattles Toby’s cage in all the right ways, and the attraction is mutual right from the first time they meet.

While I really loved the gentle toing and froing between the guys, the tenderness between them, Toby’s gradual introduction to sex (without freaking out) and the slow burn that increasingly turns into flames, I had a harder time to understand what kept Cole back from making a commitment to Toby.

Being a single dad is one reason (but Toby is so good with kids!), and there are hints that his previous job as a paramedic has left some scars, but this is never fully explored, and I was left wondering why on earth Cole finds it so difficult to acknowledge his feelings for Toby. Maybe his self-description of a “pessimistic fuckwit” should explain it?

As a consequence, we get a lot of heat and sizzle between these guys, a heap of denial of emotions and a windy journey to the eventual ILYs.

All in all, this is a very enjoyable read, written by a very good author.
Certainly one to have fun with!

Sweet

The Sex Coach is a steamy and tender romance between a single dad , in his late 20's , Pilates instructor and a 24 years old , shy and virgin , handy man (a sort of jack of all trades) who works on a horse farm.

I enjoyed reading this low drama , low angst tale.

I’m just not feeling it. Too many characters from previous stories. And even though I’ve read them and know them, it’s distracting me from the two MCs. And I don’t feel anything between them yet, it feels forced and fake.

I love The Sex Coach by Garrett Leigh.

The instant attraction.

Toby's innocence.

Cole's vulnerability.

The relationship development was classic GL.

I love that Toby was Cole's person, the one that could soothe the storm inside him.

They both nurtured and helped each other.

The story is lovely.

Highly recommended.

++Can it be read as a standalone? I would say yes, but I understand how some readers would be put off because it's evident that the other characters have books. It's a great series worth reading if you haven't already.

I absolutely loved this!

Toby is a 24 year old virgin who hasn’t had a chance to explore his sexuality. His dad sent him to the farm as a teen to make a man out of him, but the jokes on him, everyone who worked there is gay.

New father Cole takes a position as a Pilates coach when the mother of his baby moves to the area.

There is an instant attraction, but both are shy and a little hesitant to start anything, so they enter a friends with benefits situation that quickly becomes more.

It was absolutely lovely watching their relationship grow as they got closer.

Other than a slight communication problem when neither knew how to express their budding feelings, this was pretty low angst and a joy to read.

Highly recommended

I love how sweet and innocent Toby was at the beginning of this book! There was the hallmark storytelling of Garrett Leigh where they dance around the fact they fall head over heels and then don't know what to do about it, but this was more of a slow burn in establishing they wanted a relationship beyond something physical.

Very sweet but I do wish it had been a bit longer so we could see Cole at least starting to figure out how to improve his self-worth and his confidence in his role in other people's lives.

It's nice going back and being able to put all the pieces of this story universe together as I learn more about characters that have been mentioned in the books I've already read.

I love the found family feel to Whisper Farm and I'd love to go to Cole's yoga classes! Now I need to get around to reading Joe and Harry's story 😂

Garrett Leigh is an author I keep meaning to read more of, so I eagerly pounced on her latest release, The Sex Coach, a standalone story that is loosely related to her  Skins  trilogy.  (It’s not essential to have read that series, although I did find it helpful to have done so). Set on Whisper Farm, the horse sanctuary/health farm in Cornwall run by Joe Carter and his husband Harry, it takes place around five years after their story (Whisper) ended and re-introduces readers to Toby, who was taken in by Joe after he was more or less abandoned by his family when he was a kid.  Even though Toby has lived and worked on the farm for over a decade, Joe and the others still see him – and treat him – as the kid he was, and not a strapping man of twenty-four, which irks him a little.  But he loves them, he loves his job and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else – even though being around a group of gorgeous men who are so obviously sure of who they are and secure in their sexual identity is just more than a little overwhelming.

Toby knows he’s queer;  he’s been with a handful of women but never with a man, and although he wants to, he has no idea how to go about it or what to do… and to make things worse, attractive men melt his brain and turn him into a dribbling idiot who[ falls ]apart at the first sign of affection.  He worries he’ll never be sufficiently confident enough around a guy to have a relationship, that he’ll never have what his friends have.  That he’ll never be… enough.

Eight months earlier, pilates teacher Cole Maguire became the father of baby Ella (the result of a one-night stand) and has taken a temporary gig standing in for physical therapist Angelo (Dream) at Whisper Farm so that he can continue to see Ella after her mother decided to move to Bude in Cornwall.  He’s not the greatest fan of horses, but there’s nothing he wouldn’t do for Ella, and he reckons that between his work schedule and her visits, he’ll be too busy to spend time around the farm – which is just how he wants it anyway.

Cole is out, proud, pan and drop-dead gorgeous – which of course flusters Toby completely - but despite that he’s completely smitten and unable to hide it.  Cole is surprised to find himself captivated by Toby’s innocent, gentle charm, and before long – and in spite of Cole’s determination to keep himself to himself - they become friends. When Toby confesses his lack of sexual experience with men, his fears and insecurities over his lack of confidence and his own attractiveness, Cole suggests he needs to spend time around a guy and just “let it happen ”. He offers Toby the chance to explore his sexuality in a safe environment with someone he can trust not to hurt him or push him into something he isn’t ready for.  The plotline – a virgin receives sex lessons from someone more experienced – isn’t an uncommon one and there are potential pitfalls all over the place, but fortunately, Garrett Leigh avoids all of them, making this a sexy yet thoughtful and insightful story about two very different men with very different sets of baggage and terrible communication skills learning to shed their inaccurate self-perceptions  and accept themselves and each other as they are. The circumstances leading to Cole becoming Toby’s sex coach are perfectly believable because the author sets up his character and his internal conflict so well; the strength of his attraction to Cole is palpable and his insecurities are really well articulated:

“It’s just hard when everyone around me is so sure of who they are. It scares me…”

And I loved how perceptive Cole is; he realises almost immediately that what Toby really needs is to learn about himself  - and that the very best thing he can do for him is to try to instil a little confidence, to assure him he’s beautiful and worthy of love and affection.

While the chemistry between the pair burns hot right from the start and their sexual relationship commences fairly early on in the story, the emotional side takes a while to catch up – or rather, Toby and Cole take a while to catch up with what’s obviously happening between them.  The sex scenes are plentiful and steamy but most importantly, they’re integral to the story and the romance; through their physical encounters, Cole and Toby discover things about themselves and each other

There’s a lot to love about this book – the writing is gorgeous, the characters are all loveable and flawed and human, and the longing and passion thrumming between Toby and Cole really leap off the page.  And while Cole is giving Toby the support and reassurance he needs, Toby is doing the same for Cole, reminding him that he’s a good man and a good father.

The story does has its weaknesses, however.  Cole seems less well-fleshed-out than Toby, for example, and it was difficult to understand Cole’s reasons for holding back from making a commitment to Toby, especially as he so clearly loves him and is miserable without him.  Also, while I’m not the biggest fan of children or babies in romance novels, Ella is really underused.   Don’t get me wrong – I didn’t want pages about dirty nappies and colic, and I really liked the few scenes when she was with Toby – but she’s so peripheral to the story that she felt a bit like a plot device, something else for Cole to angst over.

With those reservations in mind, however, I still enjoyed The Sex Coach and would certainly recommend it.  It’s a gentle, low-angst story full of warmth and honesty, with a beautifully drawn relationship at its heart.

I think I would have enjoyed this more if I had read the other series featuring the other men on the farm. Even though this is a stand-alone I felt out of the loop for most of the book because so much of it features Joe, Harry, Rhys & Angelo.

The story itself that focuses on Cole & Toby was good if a bit dramatic. I am not in the right headspace for a book with characters that have so many personal issues and feel sorry for themselves. That’s on me. The writing is really good as it always is with a Garrett Leigh book. The relationship that forms between Cole & Toby was sweet and sexy.

If I do read the series with the other characters in it I will have to revisit this book. I feel like I would have enjoyed it so much more if I had read that series first.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.25 stars

In The Sex Coach, Garrett Leigh takes a common romance trope and gives it a unique feel. While Cole is officially teaching Toby about sex, the men are honest with each other from the start about their feelings and their attraction. While neither is sure the other wants something long term, I enjoyed that there isn’t a lot of push and pull where both men are pretending that nothing more is going on between them than sex lessons. I’ll also note that while the title is kind of porny sounding, and Cole and Toby are super sexy together, the tone of this story is very dreamy and romantic. There is a kind of “out of time” feeling to the story, as the men are so isolated on the farm and their interactions are minimal with the outside world. There is just such a lovely tone here of two men slowly exploring one another and their connection to each other. Like I said, it’s quite sexy and the men are gorgeous together, but there is more than that going on here.

**This can be read as a standalone, but I recommend you to read the Skins series first so that you don't get lost among the side characters and the story (as I've seen in some of the reviews below!).**

After reading the last novella in the Skins series, I immediately started this book because I was very curious about Cole and Toby's story.
And I really loved it even though it was angst and drama free, LOL.
Toby's innocence was so cute. Cole's vulnerability was so adorable. And their chemistry was on fire.

Well, who knew that THE Garrett Leigh, one of the queens of angst, can write a low-angst book! #ColorMeSurprised

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was excited to see what wud happen, how these two MCs would come together and pass the "friends with benefits/ hook up" threshold.

What I loved!

1. Toby...
A 24-year-old bisexual man, who is a gay virgin, is subdued, quiet, a bit hard on himself, and a workaholic. he knows that he is attracted to men, but somehow always panics if he thinks about being sexual or intimate with them. In comes Cole... #WallflowerThyNameIsToby

2. Cole...
A 28-year-old bisexual also, who is a pilates instructor, a new dad, and has baggage. he takes the job, moves into the Whisper Farm, and is focused on being a good dad to his daughter Ella. He is a loner but is utterly fascinated with Toby from the moment he lays eyes on him. #LustAtFirstSight

3. The Romance...
It starts with sexual exploration... the title explains that pretty clearly...
Both are attracted to the other, and Cole convinces Toby to start a hookup situation they could both benefit from. what they didn't know, is that their connection wasn't just sexual, which is clear from the beginning with some quiet intimidate moments they share, that should not be in an "FWB" situation. They both fight it, they fret, they second guess and ultimately make mistakes... but in the end, the drift towards each other again. #ThereIsSomethingMore

4. The Heat...
A Garret book always premises hor sexy times, no matter the frequency of the love scenes. and this book follows the same path. I loved that Cole took it easy and was patient with Toby because he recognized what he needed to get him out of his shell. and Toby just blossoms under his hands. It was sexy, sweet, and real. Also... Cole is pretty bendy.... #SlowAndSteadyWinsTheRace

5. The HEA...
The guys keep working on their relationship, even months later, and they find solace in each other arms. The sex coach keeps coaching and crossing stuff off his list, with Toby being an exemplary student. #PatienceGrasshopper

Slight niggles...
- I didn't get how Toby, a 24-year-old man, could be so far removed from social media and technology...
- I would have loved for Cole's history to be fleshed out a bit more. we get bits and priced all over, and they aren't very informative.. so maybe tightening that part of the story up would have made Cole more approachable.

Dual POV
Cole and Toby

First.... I do think it would have been better had I read the Skins series that contained a lot of these characters first. Trying to keep everyone straight was a bit of a challenge in the beginning. Knowing everyone’s backstory would have enriched this reading experience more fully. AND had I read that series I would not have felt so lost.

BUT... This was a very tender yet hot story. Toby is young and inexperienced. Cole is the new hire at the ranch and he pretty much immediately clicks with Toby. Both have a bit of emotional baggage but together they really work. I enjoyed this story immensely. Toby was very endearing and you just wanted the best for him. Cole was his person. It was a hot journey for them to discove this.
Highly recommend.

Toby’s 24, hot, single and filled with insecurities. Insecurities that come from being a 24 year old virgin. Add to this the fact that he works on a ranch filled with hot men…men who are confident in their sexuality and in their relationships and it’s not hard to see where his insecurities are coming from even though every one of these men care very much about him. In spite of all this Toby still knows that he’s the only single unattached male on the farm…or at least he is until Cole.

Cole’s a single dad who’s left the city for life on a farm in order to be closer to his baby girl. He’s ready for a life of solitude and isolation. All he wants is to be near his daughter and focus on being the best dad he can…at least that’s what he thought he wanted until he laid eyes on Toby.

More than anything I loved the sweet undertone of first love that this story held. Toby’s never been in love before, he’s never had sex with a man and he has no clue how attractive he is. Luckily for him, Cole’s more than willing to teach Toby everything he wants to know about sex with a man. After all Cole’s not a virgin, he’s had sex with men on more than a few occasions but what he doesn’t expect is to learn what it’s like to make love to a man…to be in love with a man and speaking of the sex…Seriously yes, it was hot…but it was also sweet and touched with moments of hesitancy and maybe even a bit of awkwardness that made it all seem so very real.

There’s all of 4 years between Toby and Cole which to me is really neither here nor there when it comes to age differences, but it was also delightful to read a story where the MCs aren’t dealing with a 10+years age gap. I know this happens and I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with it but sometimes it’s a nice change to read a story with MCs who don’t have that dynamic in their relationship.

I was both surprised and more than a little pleased by the balance that developed as this relationship grew. It wasn’t always Cole or Toby who took the lead in an effort to get or keep them on track and that for me felt natural and just right. Relationships are give and take and as a rule the control and responsibility for keeping it on a solid course tends to shift back and forth between the people involved.

It’s been a while since I read the ‘Skins’ series and for me this one felt very strongly tied to that series since it takes place on Whisper Farm, which is the setting for the some of the stories in Ms Leigh’s ‘Skins’ series and fans of that series get to catch up with most of the couples from the series as well…especially Harry and Joe but have no fear Rhys and Angelo are around from time to time as well.

While I think that the general plot between Toby and Cole can be followed clearly enough without benefit of having read the ‘Skins’ series, I would also caution that there are details that a non-Skins reader may miss, not fully appreciate or possibly find a bit confusing. I know It’s been about a year since I listened to the audiobooks for ‘Skins’ and it took me a bit to recall some of the details but once I did I suddenly found that this story became a whole lot more enjoyable for me…so take from that what you will.

Simply put…would I recommend this book absolutely it was a sweet, heartwarming tale of second chances, finding love, first love and just generally taking a chance on love.

I have to admit I’ve got my fingers crossed that there’s going to be an audiobook because the thought of curling up and enjoying first Ms Leigh’s ‘Skins’ series and then enjoying ‘The Sex Coach’ all over again has me smiling with anticipation.

Garrett Leigh is by no means a bad writer, but for whatever reason, I tend not to connect with her characters or stories. This took me three days to read, and while I had more time on my hands than normal to read, I found myself doing anything to not have to read this one.

I didn't feel like there was any chemistry between Cole and Toby. I feel like they didn't have a lot of meaningful on page interactions. Their communication, or lack thereof, was frustrating.

I should note that I only read the first book of Skins, and while I may have gotten more out of this from reading the second book, with Joe and Harry (as they, particularly Joe, are prominently featured), I do agree with the author intending this to be a standalone.

Toby and Cole come from two different worlds but they have something in common...they both need what only the other can provide. Toby is a blushing 24 year old virgin that gets flustered around handsome men and Cole is immediately taken with his beauty and innocence. For whatever reason, Toby is able to spend time around Cole without making a total mess of things and begins to open up about his inexperience with men. Cole uses this to his advantage and offers to be his "sex coach". What starts out as Cole helping Toby, turns into much more as Toby intuitively understands that Cole is struggling with his own issues. Time, patience, and trust open up these two men to experiences that they never thought possible. I loved how Toby blossomed with Cole's focused attention and how Cole began to see the world through different eyes. A sweet and sensual love story.

Overall I really enjoyed Toby and Cole’s story. It was sweet, tender and had some super hot sexy times. Toby was the sweetest and I loved his nervousness around his firsts, and Cole in particular. I loved Cole’s vulnerability about how his new living situation would treat him. This was largely because he had a daughter. I would have liked to know more about this part of his backstory. Speaking of backstory. This book is set as a standalone but is placed in an established universe from a prior series. However the descriptions of prior characters lend an air of familiarity you’re supposed to have, but if you haven’t read the previous series, you don’t. I felt a bit out of touch with those characters and the role they played in the current story. It felt like a bit like being outside of an inside joke. I think I would have enjoyed the overall story much more if I wasn’t trying to piece together the other characters in the story.

This is less intense than others in this series/world, and that appealed to me. I very much enjoyed our two MCs as well as getting time with the other guys. Just, the plot was a little repetitive, and a little unbelievable, just enough that I couldn't enjoy it as much as I'd expected to. A huge part of that is basic communication fails that neither guy seems to figure out without angst. I don't regret reading this at all. I just wish it had starred at least one actual adult, I guess. :)

The Sex Coach is a spin-off from Skins series, but still at the same universe. Remember Toby? Yeah at 24 now, he's still kinda virgin, and needed someone to teach him about sex. Enter Cole, Harry's former hook-up who came with some baggage.
Toby and Cole caught up in a denial that Cole was just teaching Toby about sex.
They had to work it out how to communicate better to show their feelings to each other.
While we knew Garrett is the angst Queen, The Sex Coach is an exceptional with a very low angst.
This book is a sweet comfort read.
None too heavy, except Joe and his stubbornness, and Toby and Cole's little denial.
I enjoyed this!

This is a really cute, lowkey comfortable love story. The way Cole and Toby fall in love is so "WARM" if that makes any sense. There's enough bumps to be interesting, but they all come from the MCs themselves. No external sources. I love that. I just love GL's books, every single time.
