Five Belles Too Many

Rate this book
In the fifth Sarah Blair Mystery set in Alabama and featuring the culinary-challenged sleuth Sarah Blair, things get a little too real when a murderer crashes a reality competition for brides...

Sometimes Sarah’s mother, Maybelle, can be higher maintenance than her Siamese cat RahRah. Maybelle and her friend, Mr. George Rogers, have been chosen to be one of five couples competing for a small-town “perfect” wedding and dream honeymoon on a Southern Belles reality show—and guess who has to be chaperone. Even more vexing, the producers have decided to put up the crew and participants at the restaurant/bed and breakfast owned by Sarah’s nemesis Jane Clark.

But when someone turns up dead with Jane kneeling by the body with blood on her hands, she goes from being Sarah’s chief rival to the police’s chief suspect. Neither Sarah nor her twin, Chef Emily Johnson, can stand Jane—still, they don’t think she’s a murderer. The producers vow the show must go on, but to protect their mother and the other contestants, Sarah vows to find the true killer before someone else gets eliminated...

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Sarah’s mother, Maybelle is a gem handled in small doses. In this fifth installment of the Sarah Blair Mystery Series, Maybelle and her friend George will be participants in a reality television show to win the “perfect” wedding and honeymoon of their dreams. They are the eldest of the five competing couples but they still need a chaperone and Sarah has been chosen for that task. To make matters worse, the crew, the contestants, and the chaperones have been booked to stay at Jane Clark’s B&B meaning Sarah will be spending a lot of time with her nemesis.

The reality show takes a devastating turn when Jane is found kneeling next to the dead body of the show’s director, her hands covered in blood. While Sarah does not trust Jane farther than she can throw her she doesn’t believe she is a murderer. The show becomes somewhat of a free for all as the producers try to keep filming. Sarah uses that to her advantage as she tries to protect everyone and catch the real killer before someone else gets voted off the island permanently, I mean gets killed.

Again Ms. Goldstein has packed these pages with a story that grabs a hold and hangs on tight.

Her characters and their continued development is so strong. Sarah seems to be almost in constant motion except for the little bit of time she takes to give her Siamese cat RahRah and her rescue dog, Fluffy a little bit of love. Her boss, Harlan has a big legal case coming up so he needs her in the office. She wants to help out at the restaurants she owns with her sister too. But the reality show and her job of chaperoning her mother is much more time-consuming than she could even imagine and that was before the murder happened. Maybelle is high maintenance but it seems George knows how to take care of her. They do make a cute couple. I was thrilled to see Emily, Marcus, and Southwinds get the recognition they deserved and that restaurant was used much more than originally contracted. Harlan also steps in to help anywhere he can and Cliff is back as the show’s general contractor. All these characters feel so genuine and their interactions and dialogues read very true to life.

We meet several new characters in the contestants and crew of the reality show. All these new characters are cleverly crafted. Many are pretty sketchy or hiding something which is great for a reality show. Drama drives up those ratings, which is why some of the drama is totally scripted but I really loved when anyone went off-script.

The plot was very interesting and not just because of the murder mysteries. The behind-the-scenes look at a reality show was entertaining with the crazy competitions and the decisions made that weren’t usually on the up and up. The method of death was unexpected but I was surprised because I had recently seen it used on a television show. I think the author implemented it better than the tv show did because I was kept guessing right up until the very end. Ms. Goldstein did an excellent job of twisting things up so the reveal was very dramatic.

After the case was wrapped up there was a very heartwarming ending.

Every trip to Alabama to visit Sarah, her family, and her friends has been a Perfect Escape and all seem to end too soon. As soon as I turn the final page I can’t wait to return. So while I know Six _________ Too Many will probably not be released for a year, this girl can hope. Thank you, Deborah J. Goldstein. Five Belles Too Many was a delightfully entertaining story that I totally enjoyed.

To get maximum enjoyment I do recommend reading this series in order but the author has written this story to stand on its own.

This is the best cozy mystery in the series to date; I thoroughly enjoyed it! This may be comfortably read as a standalone as there is sufficient backstory provided on the primary characters, however, one might appreciate it more if reading the novels in order. This novel is extremely well written with regards to the characters, relationships, setting, and plot.

The characters are defined very well through realistic conversations and behaviors. I appreciate that, while the primary settings are two competing, upscale restaurants, we see more about enjoying the flavorful meals than the details of preparing them. One of the things I really like about Sarah, our protagonist, is her admission of her lack of cooking skills despite her twin sister Emily’s excellence as a chef. Sarah is a breath of fresh air for those of us who aren’t kitchen whizzes. I also appreciate that she loves her Siamese cat and rescue pup and shows her devotion to them. Because of these and several other character traits, I would want a friend like Sarah, traits that set her apart from many protagonists.

The scenario was unique and interesting; I have only seen it used by one other author in recent years, but for different types of reality TV shows. Honestly, most reality shows don’t appeal to me, but the author skillfully drew me in to see the contestants and the “inside story” of this particular show. The viewers see five finalist couples plan their dream wedding, and we see the reality of what happens off camera. The women have qualified as epitomes of a Southern Belle. Sarah and Emily’s mother, widowed for a few years, is the belle of one couple, and Sarah is her chaperone for the week of filming. The competition is extended to the wedding vendors, including venues. One venue is co-owned by Sarah, Emily, and Emily’s boyfriend. The other is owned by Jane.

Jane is the owner and head chef at her restaurant as well as Sarah’s nemesis. In the past, Sarah has helped the police with several murder investigations. Had I been Sarah, I would have been tempted to help the police send Jane to prison forever if I had found Jane kneeling before a dead man with blood on her hands.

The plot is very intriguing and kept me guessing whodunit all the way through. There are, of course, more behind the scenes activities that could change the future of the couples and vendors. The resolutions were very satisfactory, with no loose ends pending. There are also a few recipes for those who enjoy trying new dishes. I highly recommend this to those who enjoy well-written cozy mysteries that include reality shows, fascinating behind-the-scenes activities, and the nuances of being Southern, especially in small-town Alabama.

With thanks to the Cozy Mystery Review Crew and the author, from whom I received an ARC of this novel; this is my honest review.

Five Belles Too Many by Debra H. Goldstein is book five in the 'Sarah Blair Mystery Series' and was a great read! In my second in the series, I got to catch up with Sarah who is a receptionist at a company of lawyers as well as doing her bit as co-owner of her twin sister, chef Emily's restaurant, Southwind. She even volunteers at the local animal shelter. I find busy cat lover, Sarah extremely likeable and always willing to help. In this instalment, Sarah's mum, sixty-three-year-old Maybelle is a contestant in a reality tv show. The participants and crew are staying at Jane's Place, a restaurant and B&B owned by Sarah's nemesis, Jane Clark. When Sarah finds Jane hovering with bloodied hands over a dead body she cannot believe Jane is the murderer.

With a generous portion of suspects and motives, a Siamese cat named RahRah, rescue dog Fluffy, and murder this was a thoroughly enjoyable page-turner. The plot is solid and entertaining and the characters are a very varied, likeable bunch of folk. The writing style of Debra H. Goldstein is very appealing and I was perfectly comfortable reading this cozy as a standalone novel. Events and occurrences kept me invested in the story until its fulfilling conclusion. Overall, a delightful cozy read that I highly recommend so dive in as soon as you can!

I received a complimentary copy of this novel, at my own request, from Kensington Books via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

This series does an excellent job of creating a wonderful mystery! This book takes it to a new level! You can see an entire field of suspects and the obvious one isn't it, even though you really, really want that person to be the guilty party. Ample red herrings and wonderful character interactions make for a great mystery. Add in the traditional aspects of a cozy mystery including a quaint small town, excellent characters, great pets, a bit of indecision on the main character's part about the direction her life is going and an insatiable curiosity on the main character's behalf and you have a book that you just can't put down! I'm curious to see the direction that the next book will take the characters in and can't wait to read it!

Sarah Blair is happy with her life after divorce. She lives in the carriage house behind the restaurant she owns along with her sister Emily, and Emily's beau, Marcus. She works for an attorney, and cares for her two pets, and all is well...until her mother informs her that a reality show is going to be filmed in her hometown of Wheaton, Alabama, and that she, Maybelle, will be one of the contestants. If that's not shocking enough for Sarah, she finds out that she needs to be her mother's chaperone and stay with her every night of the competition. But to top it off, Maybelle and the other brides will be staying across the street at Jane's Place -- the same Jane who stole her husband, kidnapped her cat, RahRah (now returned, of course) and opened a restaurant/B&B specifically to compete with Southwind, the one that Emily now runs.

Not happy about the situation, she can see no way out of it so goes along with it. But one night after returning from dinner at Southwind, she hears a scream and comes across Jane standing over a dead body with blood on her hands. Now Jane is the main suspect in a murder, and even though Sarah (and myself) can't stand the woman (mine because I hate the 'evil nemesis' in books), she knows that she can't let her go down for a murder she's sure she didn't do and intends to find the guilty party herself.

But it isn't going to be easy, because any one of the cast or crew could be the killer that Sarah is looking for. When another death occurs, things become not only more heated for Jane, but for everyone working on the show. No one wants to continue, but with the contracts signed, they have no choice. If Sarah can't put the clues together fast, someone is going to get away with murder...

This is the sixth book in the series, and I have read them all. I have come to enjoy watching Sarah as she tries to figure out who might be a murderer, and this time out, there are so many red herrings it could fill a water pond. Even Maybelle, who usually loves to be the center of attention, is beginning to waver, and worry about Sarah. Sarah has even enlisted the help of Harlan, the attorney she works for, and is feeding him information as she garners it. But there is so much going on -- with the competitions that the show has set, the added dinners at Southwind, and even Sarah's personal life, that she's overwhelmed with it all.

But as it comes to a head and Sarah overhears a crucial conversation, things start to come together. But when they do, she realizes that she might be in over her head and looks for a way out...luckily, it all works out just as it's supposed to, with a surprise ending that's pleasing and satisfactory both; and worth reading the book. I enjoyed this quite a bit and look forward to the next in the series. Highly recommended.

I received an advance copy from the publisher and NetGalley but this in no way influenced my review.

Sarah Blair's mother is on a reality show trying to win a dream wedding. Her sister Emily and arch rival Jane are competing for the right to host the reception. All the competition seems to be in good fun until a murder.

I have read three of the five books in this series and enjoyed each one. I think this series is getting better with each new book. The characters are very well written. I enjoy reading how the relationships between the characters are growing and evolving. Each book is like a visit with friends. The fast paced writing style keeps the pages turning as the mystery continues to twist until the usually surprising ending. I look forward to the next book and highly recommend this book and the whole series to cozy mystery lovers.

When a-reality show comes to amateur sleuth Sarah Blair’s Wheaten, AL, Sarah’s mom (Maybelle) and her boyfriend become contestants on the show. Five couples vie for the honor of a dream wedding, with one couple eliminated in each show episode.
Soon the contestants aren’t the only ones being eliminated. One of the show’s producers dies as does a chef. Sarah’s nemesis, Jane, is the chief suspect, and in a moment of compassion, Sarah connects Jane with Sarah’s lawyer boss, Harlan. At stake are more lives and Sarah’s sister’s business Southwinds. Sarah must find the true killer to protect her family.
This is a mad, mad whirl of contestants, TV crews, Jane-drama, and past loves. An entertaining romp, for sure.
I thoroughly enjoyed the Sarah Blair series and its characters. I love sitting on the porch with a mason jar of iced tea in the company of Sarah, Maybelle, Rah Rah, and Fluffy, among others. Good times and great books!

I’ve been reading the Sarah Blair Mysteries by Debra H. Goldstein since book one and have really been enjoying them, but Five Belles Too Many didn’t have the same effect on me. The reason being was because there was so much of the main character going on very lengthy thought monologues about the various suspects and the reasons why they could me the murderer.

If you’ve read previous cozies you know this is the usual, but these were like whole chapters, not just part of the chapter getting together with some friends and their murder board. This was Sarah having these long winded thoughts for the reader to read.
I was disappointed because there was so much room for crazy things to happen since this took place during a reality TV filming… I don’t even watch reality TV, and even I know there is so much room for hijinks!

The character development was as fantastic as always though, and I really love Maybelle and George and enjoy that Goldstein shows an older couple in love.

Every series has at least one book that isn’t as good as the reader is used to, so this won’t stop me from reading book six in the series.

This is one of my favorite series! I’m always excited to see what Sarah and RahRah are up to, and the rest of the characters are always a lot of fun too! I always enjoy the recipes at the end of the book too :). Sarah’s adventures are always a lot of fun, and the mysteries that Debra Goldstein write are always something that take me a while to puzzle out. I enjoyed this particular book in the series especially, because I love all things wedding! It made it even more fun to read! Thank you Debra Goldstein for writing such wonderful escapes for us to read and enjoy!

This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, Kensington e and by #NetGalley. Opinions expressed are completely my own.

I truly appreciate a good cozy mystery, this one didn’t disappoint.

The fifth in a series- they can stand alone- is as delightful as the others. Established characters that have their strengths and quirks to go on a journey with them is always an adventure.

This is the fifth installment in the Sarah Blair Mystery Series. In this installment, Sarah’s mother, Maybelle and her fiancé, George, have been invited to be on a new reality TV show, Southern Belle Perfect Wedding Competition. Sarah is Maybelle chaperone for the show and the female contestants, and their chaperones are staying at Jane’s place. When one of the producers is found dead at Jane’s Place, Jane is the prime suspect. I enjoyed visiting the town Wheaton, Alabama again and catching up with all of its quirky inhabitants. Some new characters are introduced in this book as there is a reality wedding show being filmed at both Jane’s Place and Southwind’s. Sarah is developing more and more along with the other regular characters in the series. There are some complex relationships in this book as well, like Sarah’s relationship with Cliff, a local handyman. The setting of this series is nice, a suburb of Birmingham. The plot of this one was well thought out and flowed well. I enjoyed reading about how a reality TV show is made while reading this book. The mystery was great in this one and had me guessing to the very end. I look forward to more in this series.

Five Belles Too Many is a wonderful addition to the series and unfortunately it is proposed to be the last. Sarah Blair certainly has been through a lot in this series, and now she must chaperone her mother and her boyfriend, Maybelle and George, who are one of five couples competing on a 'perfect wedding' Southern Belles reality show. If that's not bad enough, the participants in the show and their chaperones are staying at the bed and breakfast of Sarah's nemesis and competitor in business Jane Clark. One can only imagine everything that can go wrong with this type of reality show, however no one planned for a dead body to be found in the B&B with Jane hovering over it. Sarah, being the good person that she is, feels the need to defend Jane and help prove her innocence. Sarah successfully parses through the clues and by the end of the book and after putting herself in danger, the culprit is brought to justice.

This book was fast moving and action-packed. Fast moving in the sense that there were a lot of 'moving parts' to keep track 0f - the competing couples, their chaperones, the tv show crew, Jane, her Chef, Sarah's family and employees who run Southwind, the restaurant that Sarah co-owns with her sister, Sarah's various friends....and the list only grows. One had to really pay attention to keep all of these people straight, but they all were necessary to the story. The story was action-packed in the sense that there were many activities the competing couples and their chaperones participated in and their filming schedule wore you out just reading about it! How did Sarah have time to fit in her chaperoning duties, her day job and her sleuthing???

All of the characters and activity made for a great story -- the reveal of the culprit totally surprised me, although in retrospect there was a clue or two that hinted at the identity of the murderer that an astute reader could have picked up. Just a well written mystery that engages you from the start - kudos to the author!

This is the sixth book in the series. This is a charming fun cozy series with adorable animals and great charcters.
Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley for the opportunity.

I enjoyed this next in series as it had a lot of new charcter blended into a multi crafted plot and sleuth.. It was a challenging sleuth and I enjoyed it to conclusion. It was more challenging then the average cozy and that made reading the book fun .

Sarah Blair is happy with her new life. She loves her two adorable pets and working in her restaurant with her sister Emily. Her life is perfect until her Mother joins a bridal reality show and insists Sarah go with her to help and stay with her. Right away dissention occurs among contestants . One night a murder occurs and Sarah finds out her nemesis is being considered suspect number one and she cannot let her be charged. Sarah takes on the investigation as clues abound and the suspect list grows. Then another death occurs and everyone wants to leave the contest but must stay due to their contracts. Suspicions grow and old resentments come to surface that may relate to both murders. This was such a fun sleuth . The author included may red herrings for the reader to figure out. It was a enjoyable read to conclusion. Well done to the author.

Sarah Blair's mother has signed herself up for a reality TV show searching for the perfect Southern Belle to be blessed with her dream wedding. The show is fraught with disaster from the very beginning and the bodies are piling up faster than RSVP cards. Jane Clark, Sarah's arch-nemesis, is the most obvious suspect but Sarah doesn't buy it. Adulterer, thief, all-around jerk? Yes, that's Jane. A killer? No.

I loved the first book in this series (like yelling-out-loud-at-the-characters loved this book). I haven't read books two and three yet but when I read the fourth book, Four Cuts Too Many, I felt lost. It wasn't that the two books I skipped threw me off but it was the sheer number of characters and being simply unable to keep track of everything that was going on. This book felt exactly the same way. There are 10 show contestants, three main network employees (not to mention the camera people and other show workers), alongside Sarah and her family and friends, Sarah's sister Emily and her restaurant employees, and Jane and her chef. They were participating in activities at various venues, having filming opportunities, and doing small competitions, each one with conversations happening between different combinations of characters. Then outside people were brought in, there was gambling going on, other businesses got involved. At any given time there were a dozen or more suspects. Yes, it was as hard to follow as it sounds.

In books like this I try to just enjoy the story and not try too hard to keep track of who's who and who's doing what. If you can do that, you'll enjoy the story. If you can't do that this probably isn't the series for you. Sarah's a fun character and I'm anxious to see what happens between her and Cliff. Emily and Marcus are a sweet couple who definitely have great things coming. I also love Maybelle and George. I don't love the mystery angle of this series because it's just too involved but it's still an enjoyable book.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC.

Five Belles Too Many is the fifth installment in the Sarah Blair Mystery series. This book follows Sarah as she participates as a chaperone for her mother, Maybelle, while she competes in the Southern Belles reality show. Two murders happen during the filming of the show, and Sarah works to piece together who has committed the murders.

This is the first book I have read in this series, and I did not feel like I wasn’t missing too much backstory. I feel like there were a lot of different characters in the book, mostly because there were numerous contestants and people working for the reality show – so it wasn’t clear who the murderer was until closer to the end.

I feel that some parts of the book got slow because there was a lot of internal dialog from Sarah, but also a lot of repetition of events happening, especially in the beginning of the book. Once the story got going, it was a much better read.

Overall, I enjoyed the book, and I thought there was a good number of suspects to keep you intrigued. I think it would be nice to continue reading the books in the series to find out more about where Sarah and her town’s stories take them.

Sarah is roped in as Maybelles chaperone for the week of filming. The director is murdered and Sarah's nemesis Jane, is caught standing over the body. Sarah is playing chaperone to her Mother when she’s chosen to participate in a wedding competition. Too bad things take a turn when Sarah finds out that the production team has put everyone up at her arch rival’s Inn. Could it get any worse? Well, yes, actually it can.

When Jane, the Inn owner, is found with a dead body, she becomes the prime suspect. Good for Jane that Sarah and her sister Emily don’t believe Jane killed anyone. They may not like each other, but the woman is no killer. Can the sisters find out whodunit before any other disasters, or murders, happen?

This is a fun series and I’ve been reading it from the start. Each book can stand alone, so don’t let the fact that this is the fifth book in the series deter you. That just means there are four more books that you can binge on after you read this one…because you will want to after reading it.

Ms. Goldstein’s wonderful cozy series. Pets, romance, family, culinary and Sarah’s continuing restart of her life after being betrayed by her ex. Her characters are varied and complex, and possible motives are many. Jane, the one he betrayed her with is still insinuating herself in Sarah’s life, this time with a twist. Jane is in trouble and Sarah believes she’s innocent..this time.
The story brings Hollywood to their door along with trouble. I recommend for any cozy lover.

Sarah has been saddled with chaperoning her mother for a reality competition show. The female contestants are being housed at Jane’s bed and breakfast. The head guy, Alan, is found dead with Jane kneeling over him. Sarah doesn’t feel that Jane killed him. Despite her dislike for Jane, she sets out to bring other viable suspects to law enforcement’s attention.

I liked this book. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader turning the pages. The method of death was a new twist for me.

Can’t wait for the next installment. I was given an advanced copy and these are my own opinions. I am not required to leave a positive review.

In Five Belles Too Many by Debra H. Goldstein, Sarah Blair is playing chaperone for her mother in a wedding competition that takes place in the small town of Wheaton, Alabama. Sarah finds herself caught up in a murder mystery when the director of the competition is murdered. However, the director’s demise does not stop the contest from proceeding forward. The Chief of Police has zeroed in on a prime suspect. Sarah is not in agreement with the Chief and follows through with her own investigation, utilizing people around her to help. Even after the second body of a competitor turns up, the taping of the reality show does not cease. Why have individuals associated with the competition been targeted? Has Sarah put herself in danger in trying to figure out who is behind the murders? Will the guilty party be identified?

Five Belles Too Many is the fifth book in A Sarah Blair Mystery series. Goldstein has written an entertaining mystery that is centered around a wedding competition. The author has created a wonderful cast of characters. Sarah is a strong protagonist who faces internal and external conflicts and reacts to them in realistic ways. The supporting characters have been created with unique personalities, which not only adds exciting layers but also pulls readers deeper into the story.

Besides the mystery to be solved, Sarah is busy juggling her daytime job with activities and responsibilities that go along with acting as a chaperone. The story encompasses supportive relationships, deception, gambling, personality clashes, altercations, rivalry, and romance.

Five Belles Too Many is a delightful mystery that is well worth reading. Goldstein does a great job of keeping readers guessing throughout the pages until the final reveal with cleverly and carefully planted red herrings. Recipes from chefs in the story are included at the end.

Even though there are references to past adventures, Five Belles Too Many can be read as a stand-alone. Anyone interested in getting the scoop on how Sarah has developed as a character and the specifics of past murder cases will want to read the first four books in the series.

I've read most of the other books in the Sarah Blair cozy mystery series, so I was happy for the opportunity to read an ARC of this last one. There were some familiar Wheaton, Alabama, characters as well as new ones.
In this story, Sarah's mother, Maybelle, and her boyfriend, George, have been selected to compete in a reality show for which the prize is the wedding of their dreams. The setting is Jane's Place, the B&B owned by Sarah's nemesis, but some of the dinners take place at Southwind, the restaurant Sarah co-owns with her twin sister, Emily, and Emily's boyfriend, Marcus. All of the female contestants must have chaperones; most bring a mother or grandmother, but Maybelle chooses her daughter Sarah.
Right away, there is drama among the contestants, including football rivalry (Alabama vs. Auburn) and age-old grudges between mothers over a man. There's also some friction among the show's crew, and on the first evening, the head producer is found dead; Jane is standing over the body with bloody hands. Thus, she becomes the prime suspect.
Much as Sarah would love to see her rival go down for murder, she doesn't believe Jane is guilty, and she enlists her lawyer-boss, Harlan, to help Jane beat the rap. And Sarah also puts on her sleuthing hat to help figure out who could be the real killer.
Suspects abound, many with plausible motives, so the reader is kept guessing until almost the end.
Sarah has matured quite a bit over the series, and her sleuthing skills have become sharper. Although Jane doesn't show much gratitude for Sarah's generous assistance, Sarah continues to be the bigger person.
The pacing is better in this book than in some of the others. Apart from a little repetition, the focus is on the murder mystery. Yet the reader experiences the fun of a behind-the-scenes, reality TV show atmosphere.
This is probably the best book in the series; a shame to hear it's coming to an end.

Five Belles Too Many is the fifth book in the Sarah Blair mystery series by author Debra H. Goldstein. The story is centered around a reality television competition that comes to Wheaton, Alabama, the home of amateur sleuth Sarah Blair. The competition, Southern Belles, features five couples of various ages that are competing to win a “perfect” wedding and dream honeymoon. Sarah’s mother Maybelle, and Maybelle’s fiancée are chosen as one of the competing couples and Sarah is acting as a chaperone for her mother. Unfortunately, the Southern Belles show runner is soon found murdered with Sarah’s nemesis Jane standing over him with blood on her hands.

Jane immediately comes under suspicion because she had just had a very public argument with the man. I thought it showed a lot of character for Sarah to still want to help Jane, even after everything Jane has put her through. The premise for this book was what immediately caught my eye and I really enjoyed all the information about the reality show, how it was set up, and how the shows can be manipulated. I also was interested in the reconnection that we saw between Sarah and a former boyfriend. It definitely seems like the author has set that up for some future potential conflict.

I also thought the mystery was well thought out and well written. I did not see the killer coming. I was sure that it was someone else. The mystery was captivating though and I was on the edge of my seat trying to find out what was going on. All in all, this was an excellent addition to the Sarah Blair series and I look forward to reading future books in the series.

FIVE BELLES TOO MANY by Debra H. Goldstein
The Fifth Sarah Blair Mystery

Reality TV has come to Wheaton, Alabama. Sarah Blair is roped in to being a chaperone for her mother, Maybelle, one of the Southern Belles competing for her perfect wedding. Seeing opportunities for drama, the director has contestants with history, as well as opposing college football devotees. He's also pitting Southwind restaurant against Jane's Place. Jane's days as Sarah's nemesis may be numbered when she's discovered standing over a dead body. Yet, as much as Sarah dislikes the woman, she doesn't believe she's a murderer. As the competition continues, Sarah will not only chaperone Maybelle, but keep her eyes and ears open for a killer.

Will Jane finally get her comeuppance? Sarah Blair is a much better person than I. If I had the chance to let my nemesis sink I may not toss her a waited chain, but I might not be so quick to throw a life preserver. Sarah, however calls in her boss to help clear Jane from a murder charge.

Integrity plays a huge part in the fifth Sarah Blair mystery. So does fun. I love that Maybelle and George entered a wedding competition for a lark and love their attitude. I love that Sarah takes time to play with RahRah and Fluffy. And I love the pleasure I get from reading such a well written mystery.

FIVE BELLES TOO MANY is a fun look at reality TV, Southern manners, and murder. A colorful cast of characters combined with an intricately plotted story and an ending full of surprises make for a delightful mystery.

Five Belles Too Many is the 5th installment in Debra H. Goldstein’s Sarah Blair mystery series. Sarah’s mother and her friend George have been selected to participate in the reality show – Southern Belles. The winner gets a paid for wedding, or money for their honeymoon. While her mom knows it’s a long shot, it still sounds like a lot of fun. For everyone except for Sarah...and her nemesis Jane who isn’t pleased when Southwind gets pulled in for the meals. Jane’s in trouble, but things are only going to get worse when she’s found over a body. Looks like Sarah is going to have her hands full.
Five Belles Too Many is an engaging cozy mystery novel that had me trying to figure out – who could the killer be and why? Well, the number of suspects – many. Anyone could be the culprit when things start coming to light. The characters in this book are engaging and really help pull you into the story. You almost believe that you could cross paths with them should you go to this small town.
The mystery is well done and kept me page-turning trying to figure out who the culprit is. While I wasn’t able to piece all together to figure it out first, the author definitely took me on a ride with this book. With delicious foods (and yes, recipes) and a twisted mystery this book is a must read.
I’m rating this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. If you have enjoyed the previous books in this series then you’re not going to want to miss out on this addition. I’m looking forward to the next mystery and what the author has in store for Sarah and those around her.

There’s not much “real” about reality TV shows. So Sarah Blair decides when she and her mother, Maybelle, take part in the week-long Southern Belle Perfect Wedding Competition being filmed in their town of Wheaton, Alabama. Maybelle and her gentleman friend, George, are the dark horse contestants along with four much younger couples. A reluctant Sarah is her mother’s chaperone with duties including floral design competitions and making sure that Maybelle spends her evenings alone. It doesn’t help that the female contestants are lodged in the B&B owned by Sarah’s longtime rival, Jane Clark. Sarah figures her chaperone gig can’t get much worse…that is, until one of the TV crew turns up murdered at the B&B, with a guilty-looking Jane cast as the perfect suspect.

To everyone’s surprise, the network decides the bridal show must go on, even with the local sheriff poking around the filming sites for clues. Certain that Jane is innocent, Sarah splits her time between her chaperoning duties and trying to search out the true killer, especially when suspicion shifts from Jane to Sarah’s twin, Emily, and her fiancé, Marcus. Then a second body is discovered at the B&B, with Jane once again playing a role in the tragedy. Sarah soon fears that the closer she gets to the truth, the greater the chances that she and her mother will be the next ones cancelled…permanently!

Five Belles Too Many is a fun and clever look behind the scenes of the reality TV craze. Sarah Blair is a determined amateur sleuth who knows her limits…particularly when it comes to the kitchen. This twisty cozy mystery filled with red herrings will leave readers guessing until the final pages.

Sarah is her mother Maybelle’s chaperone on a reality show in Five Belles Too Many.

Tiny Wheaton Alabama is host to the Southern Belle Perfect Wedding Competition, a reality show offering a free wedding to the winning couple. Five couples are competing including older generation Maybelle and her fiancé, George. But when the show’s director turns up dead, Sarah can’t help but investigate.

Judging by ratings, I am not the only person hooked on reality shows. This cozy mystery uses one to be the perfect stage for the rivalry between Sarah and her ex-husband stealing enemy, Jane. When the police chief jumps to conclusions once again and suspects Jane of the director’s murder, Sarah unexpectedly jumps to Jane’s defense.

I love this cozy mystery series for its genuine characters and relationships. Who wouldn’t want to be at Sarah’s side as she investigates a murder and hurdles family, friend and romantic relationship issues?

Five Belles Too Many is highly recommended to both cozy mystery and reality television fans. 5 stars and a favorite!

Thanks to Kensington Books, Great Escapes Book Tours, and NetGalley for a digital review copy of the book.

In the fifth book in Debra H. Goldstein’s ‘Sarah Blair Mystery’ series, “Five Belles Too Many,” Sarah is thrust into the reality-television world as a chaperone for her mother when both she and her fiancé are completing for the grand prize of a beautiful, fancy, dream wedding. The competition is fierce but all in good fun until a producer on the show is killed and then one of the chefs is found dead. Sarah’s nemesis becomes the prime suspect in both murders, and even though she would like nothing more than to see her arch-enemy out of town for good, Sarah doesn’t believe the she-devil is capable of murder and decides to put on her sleuthing hat to find the real murderer before anyone else is killed.

This series just gets better and better with each additional book! The main characters are so well developed, and their interactions with each other are realistic and never boring. So many twists and turns, along with a bunch of suspects, made this an intriguing and engaging mystery.

I received an ARC from the author and decided to write a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Sarah is not interested in reality television, until her widowed mother and her new beau enter a contest to win the wedding of their dreams. Oh, Mother Maybelle knows that the elderly couple won't win, but maybe it will be fun. Sarah is conscripted to be her mother's chaperone, much as she doesn't like the job. When one of the show's directors is found dead, the local police suspect bed and breakfast owner Jane, Sarah's long-time nemesis (they're not even on frenemy terms). Much as Sarah detests Jane, she doesn't think the other woman is a murderer. She's not so sure about the other couples and their chaperones, however.
