Cornwall, Engeland, 1808.

The Light at Wyndcliff is a richly atmospheric Regency novel, reminiscent of the works of Victoria Holt and Daphne du Maurier. The storm-swept Cornish coast is a character unto itself, forming the perfect backdrop for an expertly woven tale of secrets, danger, and heartfelt romance. A riveting and deeply emotional read. This book is perfect reading for the cold autumn days ahead, snuggled up on the couch with a cup of tea.

When new owner of Wyndcliff Hall William, Liam, Twethewey arrives to take ownership, he finds sinister activity on the property. He unexpectantly bond with steward’s granddaughter Evelyn Bray while working to prevent danger to lives and stopping criminal activity.

The Light at Wyndcliff is the third installment in The Cornwall Novels series by Sarah E. Ladd, published by Thomas Nelson. The story is set in Cornwall 1820 and we get to follow new owner of Wyndcliff Hall William, Liam, Twethewey as he arrives to take over the estate. His main goal is to start a china clay business, but strange happenings on the shoreline of his property need his immediate attention. The steward seems to be at the helm of a secret operation Liam knows nothing about. He gets opportunity to bond with steward’s granddaughter Evelyn Bray while working to take care of survivors from a shipwreck and figure out what the strange activity at night is all about.

Main character, Wyndcliff estate owner William, Liam, Twethewey seems very intent on taking care of the needs of tenants and local people to make the area prosper. I feel that describes a man with good character who is my favorite of this story.

Supporting character steward’s granddaughter Evelyn Bray seems a bit clueless in the beginning of the story, but I feel she is a great help when the going gets tough. I was happy to see she developed more of a backbone as the story progressed.

The writing of the story was, as always, vivid with great research to back it up.
I found the character building very interesting; particularly the innkeeper who managed to pose as a stand-up guy for a long time, but showed his true colors in the end. The mystery element kept me rapidly turning pages, as I was eager to know what was really going on around Wyndcliff estate and where the shipwreck survivors came from.
The story reads like a standalone with hints to the other books in series, and I am eager to see what Sarah E. Ladd comes up with next.

My favorite part of the story was how Liam and Evelyn were thrown together by the drama following a shipwreck and sinister circumstances on the property. I enjoyed how they found time for private conversations and hand holding.

Least favorite part was descriptions of how local folk seemed to behave like vultures ripping ships apart for anything of value instead of trying to save people’s lives when a ship was wrecked. I enjoyed it as a great dramatic element.

Fans of Sarah E. Ladd will love this story. As will readers of historical romance fiction. Similar authors to explore might be Elizabeth Camden or Abigail Wilson.
Thank you to publisher Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for this eARC which gave me the opportunity to share my honest review. All opinions are completely my own.

Conclusion: this is the exciting and unique clean romance story of a Cornwall estate owner discovering his land is used for extensive smuggling operations. He works to stop criminal activity while unexpectedly bonding with his steward’s granddaughter.
Rating: 5 stars / 5
Main reasons: Unique plot, extensive research

This third book in the Cornwall series is my favorite, with its Gothic tones from a stormy coastal setting and dangerous mystery, but balanced with lightness from the friendship that develops between Liam and Evelyn. He struggles with getting to the bottom of the nefarious activities happening on his new property, and she is dealing with difficult circumstances with her decline in society and abandonment by her mother. I loved how the characters are good, genuine people, and the conflict comes from external sources. They both still have personal development which brings depth and it was easy to connect with them and their emotions. The pace is steady throughout the book and I most enjoyed the quiet conversations that formed the foundation of Liam and Evelyn's relationship. A wonderfully moody and sweetly romantic Regency story!

I've read quite a few of Sarah Ladd's books, but I'm pretty sure this one is my new fave! I loved the characters and the whole thread about shipwrecks. With the number of Regency books I read, sometimes it's hard to find a truly unique angle, but The Light at Wyndcliff felt fresh and new...and of course, romantic. It was the setting, though, which most kept me glued to the page. The rocky coast, Cornwall, the moors, a secluded cove...I loved it all!

In The Light at Wyndcliff, Sarah E. Ladd brings us again to beautiful Cornwall with the Twethewey family. Rich in atmosphere and romance and intrigue, the writing draws you in deeply for a satisfying read. Liam and Evelyn are both strong and compassionate, characters deserving of each other. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel!

About this book:

“When Liam Twethewey inherits the ancient Wyndcliff Hall in Pevlyn, Cornwall, he sets a goal of fulfilling his late great-uncle’s dream of opening a china clay pit on the estate’s moorland. When he arrives, however, a mysterious shipwreck on his property—along with even more mysterious survivors—puts his plans on hold.
Evelyn Bray has lived in Pevlyn her entire life. After her grandfather’s fall from fortune, he humbled himself and accepted the position of steward at Wyndcliff Hall. Evelyn’s mother, embarrassed by the reduction of wealth and status, left Pevlyn in search of a better life for them both, but in spite of her promise, never returns. Evelyn is left to navigate an uncertain path with an even more uncertain future.
When the mysteries surrounding the shipwreck survivors intensify, Liam and Evelyn are thrown together as they attempt to untangle a web of deceit and secrets. But as they separate the truths from the lies, they quickly learn that their surroundings—and the people in it—are not as they seem. Liam and Evelyn are each tested, and as a romance buds between them, they must decide if their love is strong enough to overcome their growing differences.”

{Pretty clean, but not much faith content.}

Overall, I found this to be an interesting storyline with the shipwrecks and smuggling. I’ve read all of the authors other books and they’re typically clean, easy reads. This one followed suit and was pretty clean in regards to the romance. (I would have preferred there to be less men interested in Evelyn, but at least she stood her ground to them.) I think I could have given this book a 3.5 or even a 4 star rating had there been more faith content shown. It was very lacking in that regard. There were many moments of suspense where the main characters could have prayed and yet there wasn’t one prayer…it felt lacking because of that. The plot kept my attention and even though the ending was a bit rushed, it was overall a decent read.

The third book in the Cornwall series, The Light at Wyndcliff sees Liam Twethwey inheriting the ancient Wyndcliff Hall in Pevlyn, Cornwall. He plans on opening a china clay pit on the estate's moorland, but a shipwreck on his property – along with mysterious survivors - puts his plans on hold.

Evelyn Bray is the granddaughter of the Rupert Bray, he is the stewards of the Hall, and it is a position her grandfather took after his fall from grace. She is holding onto hope that her mother will call for her, but she doesn’t want to concede that her mother may not be coming back for her. She won’t admit that she doesn’t really want to go with her mother, even though it may be what is expected of her.

I really enjoyed this book in the Cornwall series, it was my favorite. Even though Liam is only two and twenty, he shows a lot of integrity for someone his age, and he makes some unpopular decisions and he follows through with them. The same can be said for Evelyn who despite going against her grandfather, learned who her friends were.

My gratitude to Thomas Nelson and Netgalley. All opinions expressed are my own.

"The Light at Wyndcliff" by Sarah E. Ladd is the perfect fall read! I could not believe how much I enjoyed it and how quickly I read it. It is the third book in Ms. Ladd’s “Cornwall” series but can easily be read as a standalone. After reading this book, I am eager to pick up the other two!

Be transported to the haunting, windswept moors and breathtaking views of Cornwall’s coast. Picture an out of the way manor house with many mysteries in a sleepy little village that does not easily give up its secrets. There are dangerous shipwrecks and possible illegal activity. This book is the epitome of atmospheric. The setting itself is like a character in the story, as is often the case in Gothic novels. I love all the ways Ms. Ladd subtly incorporates light and the absence of light in the story and the setting. It is obviously a major theme. This book has been said to be a mix of “Poldark,” Austen and Daphne du Maurier. I would also add Bronte to the list.

I love the mystery surrounding this story. There is an underlying current of danger. Shipwrecks, and all that comes along with them, play a major part in the story. I was fascinated to learn how people would deal with these tragedies. The author’s description had me there on the beach amid the chaos.

I love the main characters, William and Evelyn. William finds himself in over his head with his new life, with illegal activity possibly going on right on his own property. He must discover the plans before it is too late. Evelyn learns about forging her own path, to welcome what comes and even embrace it (even the challenges).

If you want a good fall read to cozy up with, this is the one!

Content: I would give this book a PG rating. Some examples of the content are: men are in a taproom and there is mention of alcohol and tobacco; men are drunk; there is reference to a woman’s buxom figure; reference to gambling; a person swears, but the words aren’t actually written.

Rating: I give this book 5 stars.

I want to thank Sarah E. Ladd, Thomas Nelson and Historical Fiction Virtual Book Tours for the complimentary copy of this book for review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I express in this review are my own. This is in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s CFR 16, Part 255.

Sarah Ladd is one of my favorite Regency authors. She has a talent for creating characters and scenarios that are fresh and unique for her genre. The Light at Wyndcliff could be my new favorite of hers. Evelyn has been living in her village with an eye toward the day when her mother will finally return to take her to Bath. Liam has finally reached the age that he inherited the property she's lived on. It doesn't take long for him to realize there is more going on than he anticipated, as ships run aground on the beach taht runs along his land.

The book is filled with this mystery surrounding what's really happening with the shipwrecks and a mother and daughter who are recovered from one wreck. The book is sprinkled with the history of those wrecks and the different factors involved in the recovery. But the best part is the romance. It is sweet, naturally develops, and so satisfactory. I loved it! I highly recomend this book if you love historical novels. A delightful book that I inhaled in two days. The hero is so earnest and the heroine so sheltered. A great story!

I loved this book from the cover to the epilogue. Will satisfy Regency lovers reading needs.

When people ask me who my favorite Regency authors are, Sarah E. Ladd is always at the top of the list. She writes characters with emotional depth in a way that always, always moves me. Her descriptions of the world in which they live are breath-taking and so real that I feel I am walking along the cliffs next to the hero and heroine.

It was an honor (and a super exciting moment) to receive an advance review copy of The Light at Wyndcliffe, Sarah's newest addition to her Cornwall novels. This novel is a beautiful story, illustrating princples of love, trust, and the consequences of betrayal.

Liam and Evelyn are real, and good, and both fighting their way through the tragedy and deceptions around them, reaching for each other.

This one needs to go on your "to read" list, and you should probably bump it to the top. Sarah E. Ladd has a talent that is not to be missed, and this story is beautiful.

I was so excited when I learned that Liam would get his own book in this Cornwall series. He was such a great character in a previous book in this series. Granted he was quite a bit younger as well. I enjoyed seeing him grown and being a good man. You can always go back and read a little bit more of his backstory if you're interested, but the author did a great job writing this book as a stand alone for those who are just starting in the series.

Liam comes with high hopes to Wyndcliff manor, his new home and inheritance. I loved his optimism and goodness. What he doesn't know is all that is happening behind the scenes (mostly on his beach property) but when he starts to become more involved with the shipwrecks and noticing untoward happenings going on, he vows to get to the bottom of it and root out the lawlessness he assumes is happening.

There are many complications of course and he has to learn who he can truly trust. After all, he's the outsider in this village. Even though he is the master there. And what of his steward, Mr. Bray and his granddaughter Evelyn? He's been warned to stay away from her but will his heart listen?

A great addition to the Cornwall series. I really enjoyed the characters and seeing their goodness and care for each other. Especially when there are heartaches and sorrows underneath the surface. It was great!

Content: Clean. There are shipwrecks and danger and peril in conjunction with them. Romance is sweet and clean as well as language.

I received a copy from the publisher, Thomas Nelson Fiction, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

This third and final installment to the Cornwall series deals with Liam, Julia’s older brother. Lovely cover along the beach with the sun rise! Liam has grown into a charming young man and reminds me of his uncle from the first book. I really enjoyed him! He and Evelyn completed each other nicely. I really like little Mary and Liam’s interactions with her. I would really love to see a book about Liam’s younger brother, John as well as the rest of his siblings! I loved seeing John and Liam interact! Siblings are always a favorite part of mine! I did not like Evelyn’s grandfather. In certain parts, I wanted to slap him. He was an absolute jerk! I absolutely loved that Jac and Delia finally were having a baby! I exclaimed. “Oh yay!” as soon as I read it! 😂 I throughly loved the ending! It was so sweet and perfect! Although, I felt that the book started out a bit slow, it was a wonderful read nonetheless! I do wish the series as a whole would have more of a faith element. Overall, I loved the series and can’t wait to read more of her books! ❤️

'How long would she have to endure this battle warring within her?'

Sarah E. Ladd purely knows her way around a good Regency. This time she takes us back to the coasts of Cornwall where the new owner of Wyndcliff encounters much suspicious activity. Be prepared to be carried along as Ladd sweeps us across the dark beaches and wild seas as we try to discover the truth in this perfectly wonderful Regency.

Such a great story!

I really liked seeing Liam all grown up and facing his own problems. He's finally of age and inherits Wyndcliff Hall in Cornwall, something he's been preparing and anticipating for a long time. But things don't turn out as easy as he thought they'd be.

Evelyn is the granddaughter of the steward. She's not employed by the estate, but she spends a lot of time there while waiting for her mother to send for her.

I really liked the Cornwall setting, the mining, the shipwrecks, and everything else going on in the village. It was very much like Poldark, which is a series I love.

There was a lot of intrigue and mystery, adding to the conflict between Liam and Evelyn. Of course, the romance between them was the best part.

I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.

I have only read one or two books by Sarah Ladd and I have enjoyed them but this isn’t an author that I would go in search of at a bookstore—until now.

This cover is what initially drew me in but the description of the book is what made me agree to reviewing it. Before this book, Sarah Ladd would have been an author that I would have picked up if I saw the book on an end cap or something or other, but after reading this one, I would gladly go in search of her novels the next time I go to a bookstore.

There is something so mysterious and alluring about the Cornish coast for me and this book captured all the things I like best about historical romances. I have also decided that I need the other books in the series as well because I am not ready to leave the Cornish coast just yet.

This book had so much atmosphere, like more than I was expecting. The setting seemed to take on a life of its own. I loved the windswept coast and the manor house….this story reminded me a little of a Victoria Holt novel and long time readers of my blog will know how much I love Victoria Holt.

I started this book on a breezy fall weekend and I instantly felt a connection to the characters, the setting and the story. I loved the romance. It was genuine, sweet, and the way the characters had to overcome their own issues was excellent. I was fully invested in Liam and Evelyn’s love story and I really liked how the book ended. If you love classic historical romances that are more sweet than steamy, then this is a great one for you.

The characters have very believable flaws that are not off putting but at the same time obvious enough to be considered flaws or challenges to themselves as well as the relationships that they have in their lives. I think I felt more of a connection to Liam rather than Evelyn but I thought both had a lot to recommend themselves to readers and of course together as a couple they were so perfect.

This book is publisher by a Christian publisher and though there are some faith/forgiveness pieces that fans of Christian Fiction will recognize, I also think that non Christian fiction fans will enjoy this book especially for its atmosphere and swashbuckling story.

As you might have noticed, this is the third book in the series but it read as a standalone for me so readers should not feel anxious that they will have to go back and read the other books in the series before reading this one. I am eager to go back and read the other books thought because this one was so enjoyable!

I am looking forward to reading more book by Sarah Ladd in the future! If you love historical romances with mood then this is the book you have been waiting for!

Oh the beauty of the windswept rocky coastline and cove beaches of Cornwall, how is it possible to not imagine yourself wandering the cove, scouring for sea glass and shells, with the gentle tide lapping on the shore. The contrast, on other days, of the angry sea crashing against the rocks with a biting wind to match. This is the way of life for those living along the Cornish coastline and it’s every bit as beautiful as described. A place of so many legends, it’s the perfect location to set this book, and this series.

There is a basic comprehension as to who will inevitably be the playmakers here for the illegal activity in Liam Twethewey’s cove. Shipwrecks and smuggling. He’s newly inherited and has grand plans for his new home of Wyndcliff. What he didn’t expect was the fully established notorious activity that’s been going on on his land for far longer. Suspicions arise fairly quickly, though much to the frustration of Miss Evelyn Bray, who has grown up in the shadow of the Hall, in the Stewards cottage. She came here as a child, and sees Wyndcliff as much a part of who she is, despite the hurt of being left behind by a mother who appears to have too many broken promises, and a loyalty to her Grandfather, the one who has shown care and devotion to her most of her life,

These two characters are so well suited, neither overbearing or forceful. Both compassionate to the needs of those in their care. United in their fear of the constant shipwrecks, and an honorable desire to make things right.

You’ll be cheering for them both from the very start.

Lovely Regency novel!

There's a dark cloud over Wyndcliff and new heir Liam does a stellar job and demonstrates his integrity at every turn. Evelyn's circumstances are a result of her grandfather's poor choices and the lack of love from her mother. Liam and Evelyn's romance is sweetly slow to blossom and they make a good team.

In particular, I enjoyed the way that Ladd highlights different familial relationships in this novel.

It’s always a delight to travel to the Regency era in the latest Sarah E. Ladd novel!

Liam Twetheway inherits Wyndcliff Hall, believing he now has an opportunity for dream-fulfilling work. However, his future may be just as uncertain as granddaughter of his steward Evelyn Bray’s. Mysterious shipwrecks, survivors, and debris call into question the integrity of the community surrounding Wyndcliff Hall, and Liam and Evelyn must navigate through the lies and deceit to understand the truth.

The Light at Wyndcliff proves to be an adventurous read. With mystery and romance, the story between Liam, Evelyn, and Wyndcliff Hall is exactly what I hoped to find when I picked up the book. I enjoyed getting to know the characters, seeing them face their challenges through danger and uncertainty, and of course, fall in love. I easily recommend this to readers of historical fiction.

The Light at Wyndcliff by Sarah E. Ladd is the third book in The Cornwall Novels.

This is the first book that I have had the privilege to read from this author, and I was thoroughly impressed. I have to admit that I did not read the previous two books in this series before reading this one, however this was, to me, a stand alone novel. I loved this book so much that I purchased the first two as ebooks yesterday. ( Book One: The Governess of Penwythe Hall and Book Two: The Thief of Lanwyn Manor) I hope that there are possible connections to the characters in this current book as it can only add to the richness of this novel itself.

It is during the 1820s, Cornwall that we get to meet Evelyn Bray the steward’s granddaughter and the newly arrived Liam Twethewey as the new owner of Wyndcliff Estates. We then get to see their backstories, their fears, insecurities, strengths, and passions. Both characters are realistic, imperfect, and like able, yet have strong moral compasses, grow, evolve, and find their own way over the course of the book. I loved the complexity of the characters, their thought processes, and their interactions. There was definite chemistry between Liam and Evelyn and I am glad they were able to find one another.

The other part of the book that I loved, in addition to the sweet and subtle romance, was the mystery plot. There was suspense, intrigue, double-handing, and mystery involved with finding and flushing out the dark undercurrent on the shore and estate. It was creative, interesting, and kept me guessing and engaged until the end.

I also enjoyed the full cast of characters that were part of the village, estate, and the extended family members. All added warmth (well not all of course), depth, and emotion to the novel. There are plenty of characters that I feel could even be used for further books.

This is an excellent historical fiction romance that also has a fabulous mystery plot intertwined within. Easily one of my favorite books of this year!

5/5 stars

The Light at Wyndcliff is a sweeping historical romance set upon the cliffs of Cornwall amidst a Gothic backdrop. I mean...if anyone remotely mentions that a book has Gothic under tones i'm THERE.

Liam has newly inherited an estate from his uncle with high hopes, only to come to find that his prize is not quite what he was bargaining for. The house is run in an unconventional manner, power and rebellion run in unexpected places, ship wrecks frequent his coast line, and there is a beautiful woman living on his property he can't takes his eyes off of.

Evelyn has been long abandoned by the very mother who should be protecting her after the death of her father and her grandfathers fall from society. Now she has become adrift under her grandfathers care and doesn't quite know where she belongs...in society or amongst the help?

When the two meet, there is an undeniable connection and in one another they find belonging they have been unable to find elsewhere. Together they unravel the mysteries plaguing Liams property and put a stop to the current corruption...slowly building that romantic connection along the way.

I will say that the historical aspects of this book were my favorite over the romantic ones, although those were very sweet as well. This is my first Sarah Ladd book but definitely not my last.

*I have not read the first 2 books in this series but I did not feel slighted or confused in the least.

Thank you to Thomas Nelson for sending me a copy of this book for review. All opinions states are honest and my own

I have thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Ladd's Cornwall series. The Light at Wyndcliff will sweep readers away to the wind-swept cliffs of the Cornish coast. The setting plays a significant role, providing an atmospheric backdrop for the shipwrecks and smuggling that haunt the coast of Wyndcliff Hall. Ladd pens a sweet romance that slowly blossoms amidst the mystery and secrets that have had a grip on Wyndcliff Hall. Can the new lord of the manor uncover the truth and provide a legacy for the tenants and villagers of Wyndcliff and Pevlyn? While this is the third in the series, it can easily be read and enjoyed as a standalone.Fans of Poldark will be swept away by this story of miners, shipwrecks and smugglers.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Thomas Nelson Publishers through Net Galley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

The Light at Wyndclff is a delightful book set in the moors at Cornwall England. There is mystery, shipwrecks, kidnappings, and of course romance. I enjoyed it very much and I recommend to any historical romance lovers.

What a satisfying, engaging read! Even having not read the previous books in this series, I had no difficulty picking this one up as a standalone. This is a sweet, uplifting romance, but what surprised me most was the wonderfully gothic edge to the story. The haunting landscape of the Cornish coast is richly detailed and beautifully rendered, providing an atmospheric setting for this tale of adventure, intrigue, and love.

Loved this third book in the Cornwall series! Sarah Ladd is definitely a favorite author and I was happy to be able to finally listen to this book. Smuggling, strained family relationships, romance, and betrayal make this story difficult to put down. The setting is amazing and I enjoyed the historical aspects of the story.

The audiobook is well done and the narrator did a fabulous job bringing each of the characters to life. I enjoyed the way she performed the male voices especially. It was easy to listen to and I had no problems distinguishing between the characters. Highly recommend the audiobook!

Though this is the third book in the series, it can easily be read as a standalone. Look forward to reading more books by this author.

"He's naught but a boy with a shiny new toy...He's nothing to worry about".

This is the opinion of our hero in The Light At Wyndcliff. They could not be more wrong about 22 year old Liam Twethewey. He is a young man of virtue who has inherited Wyndcliff Hall and has plans for the estate until mysterious shipwrecks and castaways arrive on his estate shores.

This novel is written almost as a love letter to Cornwall, England. Taking place in 1820 the author's writing had me smelling the sea air drifting among the rocky cliffs and feeling chills from the oceans untamed waves. Written in the gothic style of Victoria Holt ( a fave of mine) we are kept turning the pages to uncover the truth of Wyndcliff Hall.

In the midst of this intrigue Liam finds Evelyn and their journey to love is slow, tender and oh so sweet.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The love story was a bit too tamed but that is strictly a personal preference. The mystery I figured out but the guilty parties were a bit of a surprise. Still it was just the perfect comfort read on a rainy weekend. If you loved the Poldark series this is the one for you to read.

This is the third book in the Regency Cornwall series but is very much a stand alone story. It is the type of book to read cuddled up with a warm blanket and a hot beverage ready to sip.

I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley from the publishers for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

I loved this mystery with a heavy dose of sweet romance. The characters are lovely and complex, even the villains. My thanks to the author, publisher, and HFVBT for giving me a copy in exchange for my honest review.

Evelyn Bray lives with her grandfather (Rupert) at Pevlyn. After losing his money, her grandfather took the position of steward at Wyndcliff Hall. Her mother left two years ago to find a better life for herself and Evelyn. She has remarried, but has not yet sent for Evelyn to live with her.

Liam Twethewey is now 22 years old and has inherited Wyndcliff Hall in Pevlyn. The hall hasn't been lived in since the previous owner died many years before, and Liam's arrival is a surprise to the few servants that maintain the residence. He wants to open a china clay pit on the estate, as it would fulfill his late great-uncle's dream.

This is the third book in the Cornwall series. I didn't read the first two and had no problem understanding what was going on, but it makes me want to see if my library has the first two books. There's a mystery running through the storyline--about the shipwrecks that happen frequently on the coast of Liam's newly inherited property. Liam and Evelyn become friends as he navigates his new position as owner of Wlyndcliff Hall and starting up the china clay pit.

I enjoyed the mystery as I knew things were not as they seemed, but I was surprised by how deep and far reaching the lies and deceit went. Although Liam is quite young to be the master of his own estate, I thought he was quite mature and loved his integrity and honesty. He had hard decisions to make that weren't going to be popular but he did what was right. Evelyn also had difficult decisions to make and I thought she and Liam were well suited to each other.

I received a complimentary copy from the publisher, Thomas Nelson via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions expressed in my review are my own.

An atmospheric Regency with a Gothic flare that brings to mind classics written by Victoria Holt and Mary Stewart. I made the acquaintance of those authors waaaay back in high school when I was finally allowed to venture into the adult section of the public library. I was completely entranced by this type of trope and I felt the same sort of thrill embarking on this delightfully mysterious visit to Cornwall. Love when a story brings nostalgia into the reading mix.

Also love the fresh twists Ladd brings to the genre. It's Liam who has inherited the gloomy, long neglected estate and Evelyn who has lived there most of her life as the steward's granddaughter. That role reversal was not only fun to read but brought different kinds of tension into play. And mercy, but there is tension galore in this novel! Between the villagers and the new lord. Between the steward and the new lord. Between Evelyn and the new lord. Get my drift? Liam's welcome isn't very...well...welcoming.

And then we have the wild Cornish coast -- the moors and the sea and all manner of dangers both natural and man-made. The sordid and complicated lives of smugglers and wreckers and excise men. Loads of shivery delight as Liam and Evelyn draw together to solve the mystery on their doorstep. All that and a sweet, budding romance besides. It's a Regency Reader's Heaven!
