For Kylene Danners, there’s only one fate worse than entering a beauty pageant. So when her friends (and a shot at a twenty-thousand dollar college scholarship) push her into one, she assumes she’s found hell on earth—until girls start dropping out under suspicious circumstances, and Ky finds herself smack dab in the middle of another dangerous mystery—a twisted web of duplicity and deceit far more deadly than she expected.
COME OUT AND PLAY, the third young adult mystery novel in the Hometown Antihero series by Amber Lynn Natusch.
AMBER LYNN NATUSCH is the author of the bestselling Caged series for adults. She was born and raised in Winnipeg, and is still deeply attached to her Canadian roots. She loves to dance and practice Muay Thai―but spends most of her time running a chiropractic practice with her husband, raising two young children, and attempting to write when she can lock herself in the bathroom for ten minutes of peace. Dare You to Lie is her debut YA novel with Tor Teen.
4.5/5 - This series only gets better. Ky and Dawnson's relationship always keeps improving and changing like the characters. I'm really excited to reach the end of this road to finally have all the answers.
I was excited to read this third book in this series by Amber Lynn Natusch and she totally delivered.
The story of an eighteen year old girl navigating in a world where her FBI agent father is in prison for a murder he didn't commit and a mother that has abandoned her, continues with her now a hero due to her solving a mystery from the previous book. This time around she is trying to win a beauty pageant in order to win scholarship money for college. It’s not long before other girls start mysteriously dropping out of the contest due to being blackmailed. This gets Ky involved in another evil plot. And because this is Ky, she gets involved in more of her huge task she has set herself to get her father exonerated. Of course, that gets Agent Dawson of the FBI involved in both cases. And I'm going to leave it there.
I, as usual, loved all the characters, both the main ones and the side characters as well. All were equally fleshed our perfectly by the author. I found the book to be well written as usual by Natusch and I can't wait for the next one. Lots of loose ends to be tied up still! And of course, we need to find out what will finally happen with the romance. No spoilers!
Highly recommended to readers 15 plus. Amazing series!
I’m so happy I FINALLY finished this book. I have enjoyed binging these last three books. What a wild ride they have been! My heart was racing like crazy.
I found myself giggling and laughing at quite a few parts as well. I gotta admit, every nickname they gave her friend, Tabby, had me smiling. Canadian bacon was probably my favorite. I still giggle when I think of the scene.
The relationship between Dawson and Ky has me intrigued. The tension definitely had me flipping pages faster while the banter had me smiling like a loon. I’m hoping for good things in the next book.
I gotta say these books are like the YA version of the early Stephanie Plum books. So if you liked those, you should definitely bump this series up on you list.
I've been obsessed with Ky, Dawson, Garrett, AJ, and Tabby since the moment I first read book 1 and my love for them just keeps growing. I will never get over the sharp-as-a-knife quick wit that Ky is so fond of. She's the spotlight in a crowd of "sassy protagonists" but without the cliché empty-personality traits that usually accompany that type of character. She's real. She's raw. And she holds nothing back.
The stakes are upped in a significant way in this all-or-nothing penultimate book. Even more secrets are revealed while the twists you've come to love are just as enthralling. We get a deeper look into who might be pulling some strings higher up with a betrayal that nails you right in the gut.
Natusch is YA mystery at it's absolute best. Don't mess with something that's already perfect. I recommend this high-octane series for anyone that enjoys Diana Urban, Karen McManus, and Jennifer Lynn Barnes. Move over Veronica Mars, cause you ain't got nothin' on Kylene Danners.
This series only gets better and better. When I first started reading "Don't say a word," I never thought where this book would end up going. After the events of the last novel, Kylene is still determined to find out who's framing her dad and who the AD is. However, she's dealing with trauma from the latest mystery she solved/almost ended up dying for. Therefore, her PTSD is at an all time high. It doesn't stop her from grinding and moving forward every day. Ky is also dealing with financial problems. While her gramps has a steady job (and is even working more hours), they tend to be living paycheck to paycheck. When Garrett and Tabby (Ky's two close friends) see that there's a town pageant that can lead to a $20,000 scholarship to college, they urge Ky to apply. She's wary because she doesn't think it's a good fit for her sporty, no nonsense personality. However, she goes for it and seems to be gaining support for the speech she gave, when applying. Things seem to be looking up, but then Ky notices that girls are mysteriously disappearing/dropping out for unknown reasons. Given that Ky is a curious cat and drawn to mysteries, she decides to stake out her competitors to see what's happening and why people are dropping out. While this one main plot point of the book, the other focuses on who is framing Ky's dad for killing a cop. There's more information and suspects that are thrown into the pot. There are some dirty cops in our midsts. Will Ky find out the truth or will it end up leading her down a road where she can't turn back?
I find that both plots are very interesting and engrossing. It didn't feel like there were too many spinning wheels, as this novel feels more focused than the other two. Could've it been edited down? For sure. However, it doesn't take much away from the story. There were plenty of surprises mixed in that were unexpected and really made me look at characters in a different light. The characters are becoming even more developed. The side characters have more to do this time around and there are more opportunities to get to know them. Ky continues to evolve and grow from all her experiences. Yes, she still jumps straight into mysteries and leads without thinking of consequences. However, she's learning to listen to others that have her best interests at heart. Dawson and Ky's connection as partners in crime grows stronger and definitely a highlight in the tale. I think Dawson is a good influence for Ky. I'm really into the writing style. The action scenes are well-detailed. It makes me feel like I'm there watching. I like the style of humor Ky exudes. The dialogue is catchy, playful, and never boring. Really, it's sad that I finished reading it because I liked it so much and sadly I don't know when the next book is coming out. I hope Amber Lynn Natusch writes another novel. I want answers and resolutions to the big questions I've been pondering since the beginning. I recommend reading these books in order. So much happens that it's better to read them all, so you'll know what's happening. If you're a fan of thrilling mysteries with a strong female lead, then I think you'll enjoy the series.
I absolutely loved the conclusion to The Hometown Antihero Series. Natusch decided to self pub the last book due to her publisher not picking up the book, due to the popularity and need to give Miss Kylene Danners a fitting conclusion. I'll say there's room for a spinoff for her in the future as not everything was resolved. I'll be happily waiting for a 4th book.
Kylene has been through a lot in the 1st 2 books, almost getting murdered by a serial killer more recently. Come out and Play starts 2 weeks after the last book. As with the 2nd book, I had to re-read the synopsis because the 1st book was in 2017 and 2nd in 2019. And its late 2021 and....well you know.
Kylene has her Gramps, her best friends Garrett, Tabby and her ex AJ who she dates again. She is still determined to clear her dad's name and free him from prison with help from Agent Cedric Dawson. Kylene is sleep deprived due to PTSD and nightmares from her recent nightmare. (Insert Dylan Fraser's Nightmare) This book, there's a pageant with a 20K scholarship on the line. Kylene isn't the pageant type at all but she needs a scholarship to attend college. She enters with the enthusiastic support of her friend Tabby especially, who helps her find a dress. Ky is still getting used to being treated like a hero for saving girls from serial killer Mr. Matthew and giving closure to families who lost their daughters. Then girls are dropping out of the pageant, blackmailed. Eventually Kylene is a suspect because she wasn't blackmailed. Was this the mysterious A.D. or someone else? Kylene is in danger as she and Dawson find some important information about his case.
The ending of the book mentions The" Ohio State University, as their proximity to Columbus Ohio, makes sense and as a Buckeye fan I appreciated the italics for The. It was a satisfying ending - there is definitely potential for the conclusion once Kylene is in college. This song by Chvrches called Violent Delights would be a perfect accompaniment towards the end.
I think don’t say a word is still my favourite. This book plot wise is the weakest, it didn’t need the the whole Ky going back to AJ and then breaking up. That page time could have been used to move Dawson and Ky’s relationship along which was much more interesting and one of the series strong points.
I feel like this series would benefit from moving into NA category, since Kylene will be in college soon and it would just be easy to get more Dawson x Ky moments.

Holy buckets. This series just keeps getting more and more intense. So many twists, my head is spinning. I need allll the answers. And can Ky and Dawson get together already?! Gah!
I love this series I am just not in the right mind set for it.
This was great bit the amount of things danners has gone through has left her scared and broken. This book is pretty tough becuase she is not coping well and she really needs a lot more therapy. This book really set off my anxiety. The suspense was just too much for me this time. I need to see how this story ends though. There needs to be a good satisfying conclusion!
This series just keeps getting better and better. What a fantastic book. I can't wait for the next one. The characters are very well written, the story is fast-paced and full of surprises.
Am I screaming? Yes, Am I on my nerves because I don't know when book #4 will be released? Heck yes. I just finished the book and guys let me tell the hook I was on with this book, and now I have to wait God knows till when is going to kill me. Ok enough ranting about my nerves, about how I feel about the book The 5 stars and my screams should be suffice to tell you that I am in love. The complaint I had with Tabby's character resolved so brilliantly, I love her so much. She is tigress covered in a rose petals, because she can and will bite if pushed. And she has proved that brilliantly this time. The crew of Ky, I don't know what I'll do to have friends like them. Their loyalty to ky and each other at default had my heart. Even AJ's. That boy too was loyal to her, but he had few more emotions and expectations to deal with. Where he saw Ky as past cheerleading, Sparkly girl, it wasn't enough to stand by her. Garret, my boy, he reminds me alot of my best friend, all of his habits, his strength to stand with his friend to support, in front to protect, in the back to watch her whoop everyone's ass. Him and lovely Canadian were the pillars of Danners. Meg the mama bear who fought like queen, she is something, I wished I had more of her in other books too and in coming too. #TEAMDAWSON seriously nobody can make me back up from that even Ky herself. Boy did I throw myself out of the window every time when I felt They were sooooo close or admit their feelings. And every time I got disappointed. I don't think I am getting any enemies to lover over here, but I sure do got enemies to friends, friends that'd die and kill for you. But I still hope this ship to work but not only to sink by the end. They need to be the end game for my sanity sake. And now the main Character, Kylene Danners, in so many ways I aspire to be her, the one who can take down anyone who wrongs her Or people she loved. I love the way her character grew to be what she is. The book and the series exceeded my expectations when I held it for the first time. I am going to scream in everyone's faces till they read it, love it and have my back for TEAM DAWSON.
HOLY SHIT I don’t have the ability to convey how much I adore this series and these characters ahhh but I’ll try… This was my most anticipated book release of the year and it did NOT disappoint. I don’t know if I can wait for the fourth book! Come Out and Play was just as riveting, action packed, hilarious, and genius as the first two books!
This book was more than worth the wait! I can't wait to see where things lead next and what else unravels as Ky and Dawson continue to look for answers. LOVE this series!
okay, I get that the moral ambiguity of having Dawson and Kylene end up together would've been complicated. BUT I waited TWO BOOKS for them and nothing??? I thought we, as an audience, agreed to look past their... weird.. dynamic for the sake of a perfect enemies-to-lovers set-up. I am PISSED

how did this series get better? I got emotional finishing this 😭
first of all: why is aj even in the picture??
second of all: ky and dawson are my favorite everything. love how they're always there for eachother no matter what. nearly started bawling my eyes out during the
quite honestly this series would make a FANTASTIC movie series. it's insanely emotional, but also gets your heart racing at times. I really appreciate how the author cares so much about the story building that she's interlaced all of these crazy plot points that you would never expect.
but seriously-- amber you cannot do this to me with that ending. I need the next book IMMEDIATELY because ky and Dawson are everything. this is a seriously underrated series..what do I do with my life now that I can't obsess over ky and dawson 😓
EDIT: I wrote this review thinking that this book would be the last of the series, but the author told me that there will be a fourth book!
------------ ENGLISH REVIEW:
I close this last book and I must say that I'm torn between two feelings. I'm sorry to end this series that I didn't think I would like so much by participating in this read-a-long. I loved Kylene, our brave and intelligent protagonist, who has evolved well. I followed her in her determination, her doubts and her fears and I became attached to her throughout my reading. I liked her relationship with Dawson just as much as well. The author carried me along in each of the mysteries, the investigations that she introduced in her books. I really enjoyed her style of writing, her way of building a slow and interesting plot as well as keeping a certain amount of suspense until the last pages, which are always surprising. Since this is the last book, I can't really say more. But honestly, for a reading that goes out of my way, it's a reading that I really clung to. So, if I'm sad to finish these read-a-long, I'm extremely happy to know that the author decided to self-publish and give a finale to her series when the publishing house didn't want to.

It took me forever to track down a copy of this book, but it was worth it! I absolutely loved being back in Kylene's world, and we finally got some solid answers about her dad.
However, I am annoyed that we didn't get a true ending. It was definitely left open-ended, and considering this one had to be independently published I really doubt a fourth book is coming. I want closure on Kylene's life!
My lil campy Freeform/CW show, comin’ in CLUTCH. Coming back to Jasperville to read about spooky small-town crime is just vibes. We all need a campy goonie group of teens solving crimes on occasion and this just hits the spot. Also, Dawson may just be my favorite cop ever 😍 I’m just obsessed with Ky and Dawson’s dynamic and I know the next one is just going to be the JUCIEST yet…! They’re getting so close 🥹
Favorite Quote: “Monkey grip?” I replied with a laugh. “We call that clinching.” “Whatever it is, it’ll make a grown man go night-night in no time.” “Sweet!” My enthusiasm at the thought made him hesitate. “I don’t need a nap, Danners.” “I mean, you are kinda grumpy—”
