Welcome to Purgatory 2.0. We’ll be with you shortly.
Every battle needs a battlefield, especially in the eternal struggle between good and evil. But the unfortunate souls who are sent here don’t bide their time meekly awaiting judgment—they fight for their souls.
Victor Goodspeed is a businessman, taken at the back end of his prime. He wasn’t a bad man, but he was a businessman, which didn’t tip the scales of morality in his favor.
Now, he must fight for his life—his afterlife—with God and his armies of angels on one side, and the temptations of Lucifer and his minions on the other. Can Victor overcome these obstacles and secure his place in eternity? The answer awaits . . .
In Purgatory.
This novel is a supernatural/paranormal LitRPG adventure through the afterlife.
Greetings and salutations! I am M.A. Carlson, author of three series, all available now. My second series is Planet Hero: Civilian and Sidekick. And I just released my newest novel and third series, The Devil's Game: Purgatory. I hope you enjoy the adventure and the fantastic journey that is the World Tree Online, Planet Hero, and The Devil's Game.
More about me, I love writing. I love being entertained by a good story. I wrote my first original novel a few years ago now and I can't see myself stopping writing any time soon, it's what I plan to do for the rest of my life. I am very happy to be able to share what I hope others will find as much fun to read I did to write.
Pretty solid tower climber LitRPG book. What made this better than the usual masses in this genre was its overall theme. I enjoyed that it was had a religious backdrop taking place in Purgatory but was never bogged down in being preachy. This had some pretty good monsters, floor designs, spell mechanics and a bit of crafting. There was nice progression of the MC in strength and some compelling fights. There wasn't any 'big bad' villains introduced but more based around PVE where the MC needed to beat the floors. Humour was good and hints to the bigger story/ world. This was a good starting book to what is hopefully a long series. Narrators were very good.
[Note - I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.]
Mistakes: I've listed a twelve on Goodreads. One mistake that wasn't made, this book wasn't overly preachy.
Plot: I'd have loved to know how the MC died, this is what gets him into purgatory. Trying to earn a place in Heaven isn't easy. Especially when you spend your life sure it doesn't exist.
Characters: The MC wasn't my favorite, not boring or anything. I just liked Theo more.
6/10 The twelve mistakes and that dangling thread of how the MC died kept this from being a four star book.
I was hesitant to start books this because I generally steer clear of Arthurian books and ones with a heavy religious focus. I decided to give this a try and I’m so glad I did!
I enjoyed the dungeon diving focus and crafting. They were fun and realistic. Wish the crafting was flushed out a little better. Didn’t get the time it needed to really flourish.
Also could use some proofreading. Had a lot of typos. I started highlighting them after awhile in the hopes the author would see this and correct them.
****minor spoiler**** Didn’t like the way the 250 point stat cap was presented. Don’t mind it being there, just not the way it was presented as a secret to irrevocably handicap those not in-the-know. Having the angel in charge keep it a secret made no sense to me?
Imagine if purgatory was a game and if you had to level up yo win. Victor Goodspeed has died and is trying to move on. This book is one heck of a journey through sin and sacrifice to strive to be more. A must read for anyone who likes litrpg stuff.
This book reads as if a gamer was dropped right into Dante's Inferno, with all the philosophical questions presented as battles. Oh did I say battles? Let me clarify. It's basically 500 pages of non-stop battles. If you don't pick this one up you are really missing out on one of the best books I've read all year.
I liked the book a lot it has an unique system with a good story, it is serious but not overly nor is it overly humorous even though it does have humor. Over all it is a good book with some nit picking, like how he's supposed to be a old sales man but never actually tries to barter or trade which would have gone Nicely with the whole greed story line. 5/5 stars
An intense read. The idea of purgatory being bootcamp for both sides was an interesting idea. While this series is labeled gamelit I feel a cultivation vibe coming on as he ascends the ranks capping his skills then reseting as he gets promoted. Can't wait for the next
This was a truly interesting story. It contains true redemption in a format of a LitRPG. I truly recommend this book. I believe this author and all of his other books have been truly underrated.
Excellent book! Good pace and the great job on the ending! It’s a non stop adventure into purgatory. Love the action and well described characters and story line
I loved this book. It gave me hell/heaven dungeon gamer vibe. A combination of the anime series "Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?" and skyrim.
I really liked the sins perspective in this book and how the character evolved during his time.
