As I am writing this book has a 4.26 on Goodreads.com rating based on 87 ratings. I can only assume that the vast majority of the rating are from friends and family of the author as I only got 22% of the way through this book before I couldn’t force myself to continue. I saw no indication that this book is YA but perhaps it is. As younger readers tend to be less critical, I could see how a thirteen year old, for example, might enjoy this book. Nevertheless, if there is one thing Harry Potter proves it is that YA books do not have to be crap.

The book starts with an absolutely moronic press conference scene whose only purpose appears to be notifying the reader of how bad this book is. Next, the author makes the MC (Kode) super pathetic. The MC at one time had a bright future as an adventurer but lost it and so now works as a janitor to make ends meet. For the record, I don’t see anything wrong with being a janitor, it is good, honest work and I grew up on a farm so I have literally shoveled shit for a living, which means I don’t look down on anybody’s job. What makes Kode pathetic is that Kode looks down on himself for being a janitor. But does Kode work to better himself? No. He buys the book’s equivalent to magical scratchers and gets lucky. While not termed as such in the book Kode essentially ends up with a mimic as a familiar and immediately AND STUPIDLY begins making promises to the mimic he can’t keep all because Kode doesn’t’ think. Ever.

To make money Kode takes the power up he gets from the mimic and heads out to fight goblins. Along the way he meets a love interest (Diana) and her friend (Lois). Kode and Lois immediately start to fight (verbally). It turns out Diana and Lois are on a highly important and SECRET mission for their guild but this doesn’t stop Lois from acting like a complete idiot, fighting in public and calling attention to herself. This mission is so important the guild sent a third member, Austin, to supervise Diana and Lois and yet Lois is able to send this “supervisor” off to beat up Kode. HOW DOES THAT MAKE SENSE???? BUT WAIT, IT GETS WORSE . . .

Austin IS SOOOOO STUPID AS TO EAT RANDOM BERRIES while traveling through the woods to beat up Kode AND POISONS HIMSELF. HOW HAS SOMEONE THIS STUPID SURVIVED IN SUCH A HAZARDOUS WORLD???? Having poisoned himself, Austin is taken prisoner by the goblins. The goblins are essentially starving so why don’t they immediately kill and eat Austin? The reader isn’t told and honestly the way this is completely ignored either the author doesn’t know or the author is oblivious to the implications of the world he’s created.

Conveniently enough, even though Austin should have been some way behind Kode and the goblins hauling Austin’s unconscious body should have been traveling slower than Kode, Kode CONVENIENTLY encounters the goblins carrying Austin at a random point in the wilderness.

I forced myself to read another 10 pages or so past this point but there was no indication this book was every going to become something worth an adult’s time. I truly regret spending time on this book.

Bullied underachiever lucks into ability thief power and becomes a bully

First off, you can skip the first 16 pages, it has no real relevance except to tell you the MC is a janitor. He is fired by the next chapter so now an ex janitor whose only tangible asset is a collection of smutty magazines. His cleaning powers not enough to keep his job, he rolls the dice and ends up winning by being a loser.

The rest of the story is the MC being tossed around and mainly bumbling cluelessly through social interactions while gaining more powers and money while daydreaming about spending it and collecting more girly magazines. Laughably, at one point the author insists that the MC never bows to fate when that's pretty much all he does. He even encounters an intimidating body guard and is astonished by his power, only to discover with his ability that the guard has the SAME CLEANING POWERS he started with. The irony is completely lost on him.

Suddenly at the last 15%, the MC is now a strategic genius and outsmarts 500 other people to win the day.

Unlike other reviewers, I had no laugh out loud moments sadly.

+1 star for Carl and the slime being amusing but no character has any real depth including the MC. MC is bullied loser at the start and a wealthy sadist bully at the end.

Needs heavy editing

The MC has very adolescent, very surface level thinking. Not particularly endearing. Apart from that this reads like a conversational retelling of a low budget anime plot with poorly structured perspective changes. Newly introduced characters will speak, then their internal monologue is presented in line. Perspective immediately changes to the MC's spoken word and/or internal monologue. Some skills acquired have little to no explanation. Many spelling errors throughout. The mix of modern media/transportation and medieval/fantasy dungeons isn't really explained either.

The idea behind the story has potential but this is more an idea than a draft.

Read this felt like reading the script to an overly dramatic anime. Everything was ramped up to seem extremely important or significant even when it most certainly wasn't. The story jumps from one perspective to another with such a dizzying frequency I couldn't always tell whose thoughts were being spoken.
The characters are all very 2 dimensional. The MC has character growth, but it's... Just not good. He starts as a poor kid and just suddenly becomes the most powerful, influencial tactical genius the world has ever seen... In just a few weeks.
Aside from the MC descending into a power crazed narcissist, there is no character development.

It's hard to write this review because there's just so much! Storylines that go nowhere, characters that seem important who completely disappear, and I don't even know how many times people literally humped holes in the ground. That's not a joke, the MC has magic powers that make people so horny they hump the ground until they die, and he uses it liberally.

Rated 2 stars because the book did its job and kept me entertained for a while. It has a lot of issues, it feels like something written for immature teens but has to much sexual innuendo and cursing to actually be so. It has a decent story on an interesting world that would be fun to flesh out... I feel it's just been rushed and could do with a few more runs through editing and proof reading.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I am a Mimic (Mimic Series #1) by Mrdojo:

I am a Mimic (Mimic Series #1) by Mrdojo offers readers a unique and imaginative take on the isekai genre, presenting a fascinating premise that explores identity, empathy, and the nature of existence. While the novel demonstrates creativity and promise, it falls short of its potential when compared to its contemporaries, struggling to fully capitalize on its intriguing concept.

Mrdojo's writing style is engaging and inventive, drawing readers into the fantastical world of mimics with vivid descriptions and dynamic prose. However, the plot feels somewhat disjointed at times, with pacing issues and narrative inconsistencies that detract from the overall experience.

In this book, readers follow the protagonist as they awaken to discover themselves in the form of a mimic, a shape-shifting creature capable of assuming the appearance and abilities of any object or creature it encounters. As they navigate this strange new world and grapple with the challenges of their newfound existence, they are forced to confront questions of identity, morality, and purpose.

When critically comparing I am a Mimic (Mimic Series #1) to its contemporaries in the isekai genre, such as Aneko Yusagi's The Rising of the Shield Hero or Reki Kawahara's Sword Art Online, it becomes apparent that the novel falls short in terms of depth and complexity. While it offers an intriguing premise and some thought-provoking themes, it lacks the polish and refinement of its more established counterparts.

Moreover, the character development in this novel feels somewhat underwhelming, with the protagonist and supporting cast failing to undergo significant growth or evolution throughout the narrative. Their actions often feel arbitrary, and their motivations are not always well-defined, making it difficult for readers to fully invest in their journey.

Quickest You've Dropped An Anime and Why (250 - ) - Forums ...

In conclusion, while I am a Mimic (Mimic Series #1) presents an intriguing premise and some creative ideas, it ultimately struggles to deliver a fully satisfying reading experience. With its pacing issues, narrative inconsistencies, and underdeveloped characters, it fails to stand out among its contemporaries in the isekai genre.

So you know those movies that are kinda bad/dumb, but if you watch it late at night with your friends in a slap happy kinda mood they can be fun? This book reminds of one of those movies.

I had mixed feelings in many aspects of this book. I love stories where the MC has unconventional powers. Well this definitely fits the bill. Cleaning abilities and the ability to mimic powers of others.

Then he goes on this weird dungeon lord loot stealing tangent which was sort of funny but for me felt random and detracted from the story. I assume it will make more sense later, but was kind of weird.

He keeps getting kidnapped by Gods to participate in their trials, but it apparently only freaks him out for a split second cause he completely forgets about the incidents a paragraph later. Even the ones where he dies multiple times and this isn’t a book where characters respawn so they become numb to the idea. Just didn’t make sense. It felt like the author had a lot of ideas but never fully fleshed them out or saw the through.

Also, I listened to this on audible and bless the narrator’s heart but it wasn’t very good. The voices were the kind I do when I read my kids bedtime stories. Cute for little kids, but cringy for a published product people are purchasing.

Overall, I did like the book in a weird sort of way. So take my rating with a grain of salt.

not what you want but still good. Mary Sue lvl max

I like this book and it can be a fun guilty pleasure, but it is not a book about a mimic. It is a book about a dumb “nice guy” that is given mimic like abilities. And then it’s glorified wish fulfillment. The MC is not smart enough to make good choices, he is lucky enough to survive crazy stuff. You can absolutely enjoy the book and there are some funny dumb humor. But it is not what most people will enjoy. I still naught it and the audio book.

Good start to a series.

The only reason I didn't give this book five stars, is because of the many typos throughout an otherwise wonderful story. The author should either get more proof readers, or better ones, because they did him dirty.

I still recommend giving it a read, as it's a really fun story, that I just couldn't put down. I'm really looking forward to the next installment of this new series! 😀

I got this as an audiobook, and quickly returned it. The constant repute on of “skill has gained 0.5….” Is extremely annoying. I liked the premise and was about to give it a pass for this and the bland narration, but when the pirates found him…. Using his abilities to makes everyone instantly horny and to have sex with either the island or their boat until they're in tears, and to use it as a constant threat for 2+ weeks. Nah. Super cringy, instantly stopped and returned it

Quite a read

Although the world is a little hard to understand and the characters can be hit or miss. One thing that I look for in books is whether or not the author can make a story captivating enough to keep me hungry for more. I'm pleased to say that I eagerly spent my time waiting until I could read more and I will definitly be looking forward to more like this.

I would say this is a 2.5. I was entertained, but more than once the writing and/or pacing would take me out of my immersion. This is a typical ‘loser gets a big break and becomes powerful’ story. I have read better, but I have definitely read worse. I feel like this author has potential, I hope they keep honing their craft.

Hilarious book well worth the read

Very funny story for fans of weak to strong main characters. The book takes off when Kodemeets the mimic and learns new abilities and starts adventuring. If you like dungeon crawler Carl and critical failures you will love this new series.

Good story!

Good story, but needs another edit, there's an error on every page.

I have been following dojo since his first book Birth of New Evil. That was a terrific book even better than this one

A wild ride.

This is now one of my favorite books. Would look for more shenanigans from Mrdojo. The beginning was very weak and convoluted. I almost return the book. Glad I stuck to the end of the first act.

This is a fun, wild ride.

Nothing more, nothing less. There isn't a deep plot, there isn't a larger story. But there is a non-stop fun ride that just keeps you reading. This is a great start to what I hope is a series.

I am a fan of the litRPG genre, but this one just didn't quite work for me. Some of the writing seemed clumsy and I just don't care about the characters. Definitely gives you that litRPG hit if you're desperate for it, but I don't think I'll read the next in the series.

Boring main character becomes overpowered and makes the most uneducated decisions even though he has this wealth of education on any random situation that he comes across. Hard to read when everyone he meets has to share their thoughts on how weird he is with the reader.

DNF. Audiobook has very mis-matched narrating. The female narrator is significantly louder than the male narrator.

Mimic theme was interesting and fairly original, but it suffered from the fact that main character was overpowered almost from the beginning, so quite little character development.

I love this story! It starts out with way too much head hopping in the opening chapter, but that settles down into a darn good story.
