Kathryn Nolan (she/they) is an Amazon Top 25 bestselling author. Her steamy romance novels are known for their slow-burn sexual tension, memorable characters, and big, hopeful feelings.
Kathryn is a bisexual bookworm and femme cutie with big Leo energy. They love to spend their free time hiking, camping and traveling. When not on the road, they live in their hometown of Philly with their cute husband and giant-eared rescue pup, Walter.

Here are some facts that I have learned with every Kathryn Nolan book I’ve read so far.
1. She is too good for this world. You can feel the passion and love that she has for people in general. She is so inclusive in her writing careful always not to misrepresent in anyway, but she writes them responsibly. I should know, I was her sensitivity reader. She truly cares and that’s what makes her so beautiful!
2. South Philly, baby!! She makes me want to go and visit her stomping grounds. When you read her words, they paint such vibrant colors of culture, food, “flava”, not flavor—there’s a difference. LOVE!!
3. On the Ropes was chefs kiss superb! Dean and Tabitha made me weak in the knees they were so Perfect! I love that Kathryn got to impart herself into Tab’s character as a bisexual woman. True own voices writing right here!! Dean was this gruff, sexy Italian retired boxer (have to read to find out why). Tab was gorgeous, red headed, infectious personality and when these two finally stopped resisting the undeniable attraction 💥 IT WAS FIREWORKS.
4. Trench coat scene. That’s all I will say about that. 😏
5. I loved Tab’s multicultural family. Her brother in law is an incredible black man who totally adores her sister. They have a gorgeous biracial black daughter. Representation is everything!! I fell just as hard for the secondary characters as I did for the mains, and that is something that I find in every KN book that I read! The woman can Just flat out write!!
What a beautiful, emotional, impactful love story that really spoke to me on a deep level. Kathryn knocked it out of the ballpark with this one.👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
This was a really sweet book!!! Though it mostly focused on the neighborhood where the two MCs live in South Philly, and on community and acceptance than actual romance, I really liked this. Dean the Machine is a retired boxer who is living in his hometown, having bought a house down the street from his moms, and has resigned himself to small town living in the big city. Tabitha has been away from home for years, leaving to study in LA, and then traveling the country for her job, never settling in one place. This time, she’s home for a few weeks, and nothing can prepare Dean for his teenage crush literally falling onto his lap.
Tabitha can’t believe how much she’s missed being home. She never gave herself time to dwell, since she’s been escaping the ghosts of her past. Her mother did a real number on Tabitha and her sister and father. Namely cheating, judging one sister for marrying a black man and another for being bisexual. But worst of all, she made a young Tabitha complicit in her affair, doing lots of damage to her psyche. Still, now that she’s home with her family and spending time with Dean, who is amazing and shy and humble and wonderful, and they’re clearing out the junked lot near their homes together, Tabitha has thoughts of staying.
So yes, this book was mostly activism and neighborly love, which is fitting since it’s set in The City of Brotherly Love, and I really got a lot out of all that. But mostly it was Dean who was the star of this one, which his quiet admiration, his earnest inner thoughts and shyness that made him that much more non-physically attractive. I loved his parts the most. I liked Tabitha’s origin story, how being bi was such a huge part of her identity and how proud she was of that, though the constant focus took away from the experience for me. There was SO MUCH focus on Tabitha and it felt self serving. It took me out of the story a lot, although my favorite parts were when it tied in with Dean’s moms. Bravo for all of the lovable neighbors and friends in this one!
I just read a very sweet hug of words, emotion and kindness.
Dean the Machine and Tabitha Tyler are adorable. Dean and Tabitha were friends of a sort in high school. They grew up in the same neighborhood and call South Philly their stomping grounds and Dean lives there still. Tabitha is home visiting family and has been a nomad for years.
But in a nutshell, Dean and Tabitha…triple swoon. I love these two fiercely. They a little shy and little hesitant, both beyond sweet: they are amazing, caring people, and their story is one that will make your heart soar. Tabitha is a ray of sunshine and, really, so is Dean, but he is struggling a little bit as he tries to figure out life after boxing. The side characters add so much to the story! Tabitha’s family, Dean’s parents, Dean’s best friend and all the neighbors. And I do not want to miss sweet Pam! It’s LOVE, baby!
I don’t want to get too much into their story but it’s just so very, very good.
I am simply delighted with Kathryn Nolan’s love letter to Philly. My heart is bursting with joy that she wrote something real and beautiful about The City of Philadelphia, because it is real and it’s not something easily described about the City of Brotherly Love. The city is people who grumble about City Hall, complain about the Eagles, condemn a brand new crazy hockey mascot and then defend said mascot to the rest of the country, but love and care for their neighbors, Philly is like that slightly unpleasant looking stray dog: the surface looks rough and dirty but, reach out take a closer look and turns out you’ll see there’s a lot of great and wonderful things not seen right on the surface.
Bravo to the author for doing an amazing job and bringing us such a sweet story. 5 Liberty Bell rings to On the Ropes.
Ok, OK, I’m from the Philly area, specifically the burbs and worked “downtown” for 20 years…😍 I may be slightly biased. But, Philly IS a great town!
Have you seen In the Heights? This gave me the same kind of vibes, minus the singing and dancing, but add in some steam - lol! We've got our sweet hometown guy, the girl with big dreams who finds herself back home, a strong sense of community/found family, and a focus on inclusivity. Our heroine is bisexual (an Own Voices element), and that was incorporated so well. It's got a different tone than the other books I've read by Nolan, with a slower burn, softer feel, and more of a focus on family and community. Yeah, it was too slow sometimes. The beginning was definitely too slow for me, and I think the page count could've been reduced quite a bit. But I loved how unique it felt, and once the romance got going, it was pretty solid.
The story follows Dean, a former boxer who retired very young because of an injury. He's not quite sure what to do with himself now that he's not an athlete with a career on the rise, and he's been hanging around his hometown feeling sorry for himself. When the girl he crushed on in high school returns home for a visit, those old feelings come rushing back. Tabitha is Dean's total opposite, a wild, carefree woman who wants to travel the world and do big things. She's a free spirit who only does flings, and Tabitha thinks Dean would make the perfect temporary adventure. But Dean is a sweet, shy guy who knows he's got too many feelings wrapped up in Tabitha to cross that line for a fling. As the two reconnect and spend time together, one of them has to change their ways.
Community is a major element of this book, and that took me by surprise. There are definitely some subplots that revolve around the neighborhood, and Nolan paints such a vivid picture. It felt real and authentic, though the community focus does keep the pace a little more laidback and less centered on the romance than I typically like. That's just personal preference, but this takes awhile to really get going. I loved the characters though, especially Dean. He is a sweetheart, and I loved all of the contrasts of his character - a man who made a living with his fists, who is kind, shy, and nervous around the girl he likes. The friends to lovers element was great, and while "fling to more" romances aren't a personal favorite of mine, it worked with the story. This is a light, steamy, and laidback read that's a great mix of sweet and sexy.
Pure Magic This is a small book, setting wise, taking place completely in one small South Philadelphia neighborhood, but it packs a huge punch in feelings! Dean Knox-Morelli has had a crush on the radiant Tabitha Tyler since they were classmates in high school. When successful filmmaker Tabitha returns to 10th Street to visit her family, she bumps into retired boxer Dean and is determined to replace his scowl with the shy smile she remembers from long ago. Dean and Tabitha wind up staying next door to each other, and next door to an abandoned eyesore lot badly in need of renovating. Before he knows it, the reticent Dean is completely knocked out by the effervescent Tabitha and the quirky cast of nosy neighbors and over-enthusiastic family members determined to revitalize the vacant lot. Except it all has an expiration date because Tabitha is soon on to her next far-flung job site, holding her secrets close. As usual, Kathryn Nolan brings her trademark steam to this adorable couple and the feeling of not quite knowing how they are going to achieve their happily ever after! On the Ropes is a beautiful, emotional love letter from Philly girl Kathryn Nolan to the city she loves! It was sweet, adorable, sexy, and full of big feelings!
This book was pure joy. Simple yet full of so much depth and love. It was sweet, funny and so emotional.
Kathryn Nolan nails this friends to lovers story set in South Philadelphia. She builds a community that you can quite easily see yourself fitting into.
Dean is a former boxer struggling to find his place in the world after injury forces him to retire. Tabitha is the girl he had a crush on in high school back in town to visit family on the way to her next job.
When Tabitha literally falls into Deans lap it sets in motion a series of events which leads both characters to make decisions on where their life is heading whilst they work to make a difference in their community. They embark on a romance with an expiration date which is sweet, tender and sexy but quickly discover that this may just be what they both need most.
I absolutely adored the chemistry between Dean & Tabitha. Not just the scorching hot sexual tension but the deep friendship and respect. Though, as always, the author absolutely nails the sexual chemistry.
The city of Philadelphia had a staring role in this story along with a cast of colourful supporting characters which enhance the community vibe.
This book felt like a massive love letter to Philly from the author and demonstrates how you can make a massive difference with small acts of kindness. It also makes me want to visit Philadelphia and stroll down 10th Street hoping to catch some gossip around the kiddie pool on a hot summers evening.
ARGH! I'm not crying, your crying! No? Ok, maybe just me, but OMG how much did I love this story?!? This author's love of Philly shines throughout this trip of self discovery and second chances! I feel like I kinda love Philly too, and I've never been there! Only if I can live on their block though because they sound like they have a blast! Dean and Tabby are so special you won't want to leave them. I think this was the first bi heroine I've ever read, not that I wouldn't read about one I just hadn't ever sought it out but I thought this author portrayed the depth of what I can imagine must be the difficult decisions and realizations one coming out as bi or anything else to family faces. I just wanted to hug Tabby but was so glad to see she had such an understanding Dad and Stepmom and surrounding community and 'found' family. And Dean's mothers were perfect. And I pretty much want to be best friends with the whole gang so we can have kiddie pool and water ice and pork rolls, maybe even all at once lol. Such a good story, its been a while since I cried from a book, and they were happy tears! Bravo Ms. Nolan, you have topped yourself yet again, I miss the gang already!
I was torn between devouring this book and taking my time reading it. Dean the Machine is a former fighter, battling an internal struggle only he really knows. Tabitha is a nomad, who loves to travel for her job, but there's something deeper keeping her away from her family. When she comes home for a visit and literally falls in the lap of Dean, you instantly feel the sexual tension between these two. I'm going to Philly for the first time in Nov, and I honestly can NOT wait to go to the step of the museum and sit there and imagine all that went on between these two! I loved this book, I loved the neighborhood and how everyone bands together to take care of everyone. You don't see that where I live, and I'm just a bit jealous over that ;)
Dean and Tabitha...there are not enough words on how I loved this shy hero and this sparkling ray of sunshine together! They were perfect! Their chemistry leaps off the page, and I couldn't put this book down! I just loved these two so damn much!
I related to Tabitha on so many levels (hello tattoos!) and her desire to wander but love her family. She was so relatable, and that is what I love about Kathryn's characters! And Dean...swoon! I love a shy hero, and he was PERFECT! You wouldn't expect a boxer to not be confident in all aspects of his life, but I loved this twist. Dean and his big heart captured mine...I want my own boxer now!
The joy you feel reading Kathryn's book is unmatched...it's such a theme in her books, but you feel it when reading. You're just happy and it makes you want to find your own joy in life! The happy bubbles just sparkle in this book!
I have never been to Philly, but I felt like a lifelong neighbor after reading this book ready to go sit on my stoop! I was immediately sucked into the block in South Philly and absolutely loved getting to know everyone!
I cannot gush enough about this book and how freaking happy it made me! I had happy tears in my eyes because you just feel so much love and joy, that it's hard to contain in this book. Kathryn's books are always my favorites, but this one just catapulted right to the top!
I loved this sweet story so much! Kathryn has written a bisexual main character that is honest and real. When Tabitha’s dad says, “I don’t know what bisexual means yet, but if that’s what you are, it must mean I love it right?”, I cried. I wish every kid that came out had her dad!!
Dean is a sweet, shy, lost ex professional boxer deeply rooted in his hometown. Tabitha is a fun loving, spontaneous, nomad that returns home for a break. Together they are perfect. They balance each other and push each other. The chemistry is off the charts! Sometimes we should all leap without looking!
Dean and Tabitha anchor the story but the rest of the characters make it even better! From Eddie and Alice to the families to Pam, each and every one of them added richness and love to the story. I have never been to South Philly but after reading this book I feel like I have and I want to go back!
Fabulous! Warm, witty, filled with heart and absolutely wonderful characters, On the Ropes is yet another excellent book from the talented Kathryn Nolan. Dean and Tabitha are a complete joy! Dean is self-effacing, thoughtful, deeply private, stoic with a vulnerability which demands a strong, warm heart to complement him. Enter Tabitha. Such a gorgeous heroine whose wanderlust has both rewarded and isolated her. Her wit and warmth, her big, brave heart deserve a love which is equal to her, and Dean, Mr Machine, is, without a doubt, her Mr Perfect. With her characteristic wit, warmth, love of humanity and lovely writing, Kathryn Nolan brings us another totally delightful book which has warmed me down to my smallest atom. Perfect! 💖💖💖💖💖
This book is a love letter to Philadelphia, mostly to South Philly to be exact, but she highlights some of the most beautiful aspects of the city. The story is Kathryn in all her honest, open, good hearted ways. It’s how she sees the world. This story is me, this story is you. It can be anyone you know. It’s not billionaires or unrealistic. It’s true!
If you’re looking for a book filled with depth, feeling, community pride, romance, love and the heat that lights up the sun than this is the book for you.
I cried, I swooned, I related. It’s nostalgia at it’s best. Yet it’s so relevant! If you live in a community or have heard stories about once upon a time, a long time ago neighbors knew neighbors and watched out and helped each other and were in each other’s business. I’m here to tell you that did and still does exist. This book is that story.
It brings attention to so “many Issues” and so much that should be important. As a famous person once sang, “people who need people are the luckiest people in the world”and when you meet that one very special person who makes you feel deep in your soul you were half now you’re whole that can make all the difference in your life. Well, Dean and Tabitha are those people as well as all the other characters you will fall in love with in this book. Kathryn encapsulated this all into one heart melting, soul touching book.
There is so much I want to write about but you deserve to enjoy and digest every morsel of this delectable book all on your own. If you lived some of this I’m sure you’ll reminisce. If you’ve never been privy to this kind of community camaraderie feel free to be a little bit jealous. I promise this story and characters may be fiction but the place and these wonderful people they portray are very much alive and real. To that I can attest. Yes, I am very much a Philly girl through and through. I’m not from South Philly but know it very well. I come from a neighborhood similar in so many ways. However, I must stress that South Philly is unique and like a city within a city. It would be wonderful to see this sense of community everywhere. One other area I forgot to mention is the cultural tour Kathryn has provided in this treasure. It’s loaded with beautiful scenery and how she describes the view from an iconic spot is breathtaking. Knowing it well I could see it as if it were in front of me
If I could I would give this book a galaxy of stars. Yes I’m a Philly girl but you know what? A beautiful story is a beautiful story no matter where you’re from or where it’s set. This IS a Beauiful and Meaningful story! Thank you Kathryn!! Once again you astound me with the ethereal soul you possess that translates in the books you so graciously share with us to enjoy.
Kathryn Nolan has painted such a vivid picture of South Philly that I feel like I’ve walked down the streets and have personally met the lovely people who live there. The City of Philadelphia could use this book as a “see the best of”, South Philly. OK, maybe they would need to take out a few very steamy scenes to make that work, but it has made me want to sit on a stoop with the citizens of this part of Philly. Maybe enjoy a lemon water ice or eat some Italian food while gossiping with the neighbors.
This is the story of South Philly natives Dean (The Machine) Knox-Morelli, former Golden Gloves champion and life-long resident of Tenth Street and Tabitha Tyler former resident of Seventh Street and high school crush of Dean.
When Tabitha returns for 17 days between projects to visit her family it’s the first time Dean has seen her since high school. Tabitha had “escaped” South Philly after high school to attend UCLA and has a job as a videographer that has her constantly moving from place to place. When Tabitha literally falls into Dean’s lap this starts a 17-day friendship/relationship that is all about working hard and playing hard. As Dean and Tabitha explore the neighborhood and other parts of Philly it’s just like being there with them. The Philadelphia Museum of Art steps made famous in the movie, Rocky, will hereafter take up more space in my brain.
It’s a wonderfully heart-warming story that really shows how people can come together to achieve great things. There are a lot of secondary characters that add a lot to the story. Although this is a romance between two characters, in this case it is also about a community of people coming together to help each other.
There is a lot of advocacy that takes place in this book. One of the reasons I like Kathryn’s books is that she is a champion of marginalized people and always includes education and resources in her stories. I always learn a lot and that leads me to educating myself more about the issues she writes about. Just read this book, you will be left with a very warm feeling inside you.
Kathryn Nolan never disappoints! These characters are both sweet and steamy as well as beautiful complex. The love of Philly came through in this gorgeously written story. There was joy and laughter, sadness and heartache, and in the end, pure love!
This book is beyond a simple happily ever after, it's a chance at rebuilding, reassurance, and renewal. Tabitha flits here and there, filming about causes close to her heart, while she's avoided her hometown of Philly for the past nine years. Dean is a retired boxer trying to find his worth and has lost himself along the way. These two temporary neighbors are now working side by side and oh boy do the sparks fly. I absolutely adored Tabitha's sunny personality and Dean's vulnerability just made me want to hug him! I loved riding along on their spontaneous adventures in Philly. And let's not forget the steam, THAT FIRST KISS, their chemistry was sizzling.
Tenth Street was so full of life and we get to visit with all the quirky neighbors and "found family". I can totally see myself sitting on a stoop with a drink, listening to Eddie and Alice while dippin my toes in the kiddie pool. Kathryn amazes me with how she can elicit so many emotions and imagery in one scene. This is truly a love letter to Philly and a beautifully written romance in one.
On the Ropes by Kathryn Nolan is a contemporary friends-to-lovers romance told in first person, dual POV. It follows the relationship between former pro boxer Dean “the machine” Knox-Morelli and Tabitha Tyler, his high school crush and new neighbor.
I loved Dean and Tabitha’s story! They were both likeable, well-developed characters with fun banter and sizzling chemistry. South Philly was as much a character as it was a setting, and though I never visited before, the story transported me in such a way that I felt like I was there. Dean and Tabitha were beyond cute together. I couldn’t stop smiling as I read their story. It just made me feel warm and fuzzy and happy all over. And who doesn’t need more of that these days? Emotional, steamy, and adorably sweet! Highly recommended for all the good feels.
I loved this opposites attract romance! Tabitha is outgoing and nomadic, traveling all over as a videographer. Former boxer Dean is a little shy, full of roots and responsibility. When Tabitha falls, quite literally, into his lap, the two reunite and realize they’re next door neighbors for the brief time she’s in Philly. Why not have a fun summer fling while she’s there?
This was a tender romance, but also a little gritty and a lot steamy! There were some funny moments as well mixed in with the more emotional ones.
Both characters were trying to find their place in this world, both had issues they were working on, and I loved that they could be the soft landing spot for each other.
It’s a romance, sure, but it’s also a love letter to Philadelphia and it’s communities. An ode to stoop sitting, water ice, and the Rocky steps.
It also features an amazing cast of secondary characters, all of whom I fell in love with! This is my favorite Kathryn Nolan novel to date and I’ve got my fingers crossed for Rowan’s story next
On The Ropes by Kathryn Nolan is the first book I have read by this author.
Dean „The Machine“ Knox Morello is a retired boxer living in his home town after his luck turned down. Tabitha hasn‘t been home in a long time. She‘s finally back in her hometown for some down time when she unexpectedly meets Dean again.
Their story is super sweet! I enjoyed it alot! Tabitha and Dean have been through alot in the past and their present is looking good so far. I enjoyed their friends to lovers romance! It was sweet, steamy and gritty. It‘s not only about their love. It‘s about family, friendship and the town they are living in!
Kathryn‘s writing was great! It was flowy and easy to devour! 4 ⭐️
What a sweet read! Dean “The Machine” Knox-Morelli is a former boxer and Tabitha Tyler is a filmmaker who rekindle their friendship from high school. Tabitha comes home after 9 years and is staying next to Dean. Dean is surprisingly a shy and not so confident guy. I love that! Tabitha is outgoing and has a wandering soul.
Their love story is cute and swoony! They have chemistry enough to share! I couldn’t put this one down, I read it in 1 day. I truly love how Kathryn draws you into her stories and makes you feel like you are there. I feel like I know South Philly, even though I’ve never been. She creates worlds that are real and characters that become friends. I’m always smiling when I finish Kathryn’s books.
This author quickly became a favorite of mine when I read through lost of her backlog last year, so whenever she releases a new book I jump on the opportunity to be an early reader. And while this book has more of a slow burn than her other work, and is more focused on the towns community and how they each take care of one another as one big family versus the romance between Dean and Tabitha. And while I did enjoy that at times, they sole focus on the community projects took time away for their romance to truly blossom in the way I'm used to. But thats not to say I'm unhappy with their ending -- quite the opposite really, I just feel like some parts of the book could have been left out as the slow burn felt too slow at times.
I do really commend Kathryn for writing a bisexual heroine. That's not something you see in a lot of romances (or I should I say not something you see done *well*) Tabitha's bisexuality is such a central part to who she is as a person, and I loved how it wasn't glossed over. Because of her mixed feelings with her parents divorce, the secret she was forced to keep, and how awful her mother is, Tabitha only does flings with whomever catches her eye, and then breaks it off as soon as the other person starts catching feelings. So when she quite literally falls into the lap of the sweetest guy in her hometown, she is determined to make him give into her carefree, fun ways. And she has no chance of becoming attached since she's leaving so soon. But fate has other plans.
Dean is a retired boxer, who has no idea what to do with his life. An injury made him quit before he was ready, but he never enjoyed the fame. Being back in his hometown is making him edgy, looking for something to give him passion again, when a blast in the past falls into his arms and he starts to wonder what could be. Tabitha was always his soft spot, his unattainable crush, and when he finds out she's temporarily staying next door, he can't help but think about giving in to all the temptations she's throwing his way... even if he's not the fling type in the slightest. With their passion eclipsing everything else around them when their together, one of them has to bend.. but will they bend too much that the end up breaking?
As I said above, I really adore this couple, I just wish we had more focus on them. Their chemistry was undeniable, their passion explosive, and the love they had for each other is clear as day-- even before they want to admit it. I loved the fact that Dean had such a soft side, instead of being an overbearing alpha, and the way he just *got* Tabitha made my heart melt. Plus there's plenty of steamy moments! *winks*
If you're looking for a lighter romance that still gives you all the feels and a heightened sense of family, this is for you!
**I received an ARC of this book and these are my honest opinions!**
I received an ARC of this book and this review is my own honest opinion.
This book is everything you could possibly want to read, it’s amazingly heartfelt, pulls on all your emotions and shows you how friendships and community spirit are the key to happiness as well as love. The writing is incredible in this book, it was so descriptive that I felt like I was actually in South Philly! Even a day later and while writing this review I still feel deeply immersed in all that is Tenth St, South Philly.
Dean is an ex boxer whose career was cut short by injury and he suffers with a crisis of confidence and low self esteem and wonders about his place in society now.
Tabitha is a videographer coming home to South Philly between jobs. Herself and Dean used to go to school together. While home they reconnect and the chemistry is insane! I loved how Tabitha had word vomit.
Every character was great and really added value to the book. I loved how the author covered subjects from bisexuality to inter racial marriages and discrimination to acceptance.
A truly great read by a new to me author, but it definitely won’t be the last book I read written by Kathryn. A worthy 5 stars!
“How beautiful it would be to live a life where giving in to pleasure also meant giving in to love.”
On the Ropes was a bright, shiny, feel-good romance that tugs at your heartstrings and will lighten your heart. When Tabitha returns home for a visit, she literally falls into the lap of Dean who has always had a crush on her. Soon they find out that they are living next door to each other and Tabitha is determined to bring Dean out of his shell.
“You always made me feel like I could be myself around you. You still do.”
Dean is a retired boxer who is trying to find his place. He’s extremely regimented and keeps most of his impulses under control. Tabitha is carefree and spontaneous and never stays in one place for long, but underneath the cheery exterior, there’s a hidden pain and guilt that she’s struggling with. These two truly bring out the best in each other and balance the other one out. With each other’s understanding and attention, they both begin to blossom and deal with their issues.
Filled with a beautiful sense of family and community, this story is steamy and sweet. I loved the entire neighbor and would love to visit them again. I hope we get to see Rowan meet his match in the future.
What an absolute feel good read! I smiled throughout this entire book!!! Low in drama and high in love. I loved how shy Dean was. He was so adorable but still very much a man. Struggling to find his true identity after retiring early from a promising boxing career, Dean feels lost in his home town. Then his dream girl literally falls into his lap. Tabitha travels the country as a videographer. She keeps her relationships skin deep so she has no attachments. While home in Philly, she looks for her next fling and ends up landing in Dean's lap. These two embark on a neighborhood project together and sparks fly. Their neighbors, friends, and family are a huge part of the story as well. There are so many heartwarming moments and the heat between these two!! The character growth both as individuals and together, was so well done. I can't say enough positive things about this book.
It's been like over a week and I cannot get Tabitha and Dean out of my head. This friends to lovers romance was poetic perfection. Tabitha's sunshine to Dean's shy brooder, the friendship they rekindle that leads to fire. I have so many highlights and favorite scenes (the rocky stairs, the trench coat, the caretaking moment that choked me up). It's a story of belonging, of love conquering all, especially loving yourself and your shortcomings, and I will never go to Philly again and not look for Dean and Tabitha and the entire kiddie pool crew.
Kathryn Nolan can do absolutely NO WRONG in my eyes! This book was exactly what I needed. It was charming, sexy, and heartwarming. Kathryn has an incredible way of making every character she writes feel like family - WITHOUT FAIL. I get attached so quickly to her characters and stories and every time I finish one I have the dopiest smile on my face. On the Ropes is a fantastic friends to lovers story that you will definitely have a crush on :)
Written by an own voices author, this book touches on a lot a subjects that we need to see more of in romance.
I fell in love with the neighborhood that this book was centered around. The family ties, and the neighbors that go above and beyond to care for their own.
“You forget how long I’ve known you, how long I’ve watched you choose love over anything else. That’s the only way to make it through this world.”
Readers will be able to soak up the love that the author has for Philadelphia, especially South Philly.
This feel good story, on top of the blazing hot chemistry between Dean and Tabitha will leave you with a smile on your face and a desire to visit Philadelphia!
(3.8 Stars) Dean “the machine” Knox-Morelli is a former fighter and a little down on his luck. That is until former high school cheerleader and maybe slight crush Tabitha Tyler falls into his lap…literally. While Tabitha is staying next door can these two former friends relationship blossom into more? This did take me a bit for me to get into but once I did I enjoyed Dean & Tabitha’s friends to lovers, summer romance. An easy, sweet weekend read based in the city of brotherly love. Told in dual POV
On the Ropes was a heartfelt, sexy, and sweet story filled with so much love. I adored Dean and Tabitha, learning about their pain and watching them open up and trust as they came together. I felt so invested in their lives and couldn’t wait for their HEA.
Tabitha was the best and I loved her infectious personality. She was so bold and caring and I loved her big heart. Dean was fantastic, a bit broody and so very sexy! I enjoyed learning about Tabitha’s struggles and the conflict she was dealing with and all that Dean had endured as a boxer and how it affects him today. I loved them reconnecting and the moment it happens. It's fun and flirty and super entertaining. I loved them becoming friends and the playfulness and caring between them. I ate up their growing attraction and building sexual tension. Their chemistry was sizzling and I loved the heat it created. These two together are hot!
I loved the wonderful cast of characters involved and the neighborhood they lived in, giving it a small town feel even though they're in a big city. Everyone was so unique and helped paint a great picture of their community. I absolutely adored Dean and Tabitha’s parents. How loving, hardworking and supportive Tabitha’s father has always been, accepting her for who she is and doing everything he could to support her. Dean’s moms were a delightful and I got such a since of joy from them. There's always something special about an extraordinary cast of secondary characters that create an impact of their own and I thought this group definitely did that.
I thought this book had an incredible build. I couldn’t wait for Dean and Tabitha to work things out, and when it finally happened, my heart pretty much exploded. I loved the beauty of them opening up and being who they were truly meant to be and the ups and downs of their journey to get there. There were so many exceptional moments that filled me up and made me happy. This was an excellent friends-to-lovers story filled with so much heart. Amazing read!

Let’s meet our protagonists: Dean Knox-Morelli, aka “Dean the Machine”, celebrated boxing champion, made the difficult decision to retire at the pinnacle of his career to protect his future. He lives in South Philly on the same block he grew up on and most days helps his elderly neighbors with small repairs and errands, as well as volunteering at the local community center.
Tabitha Tyler, videographer and Instagram influencer, returns home for a 2 week vacation to visit with her parents, her sister, brother in law and the adorable Juliet - her 5 year old niece. Tabitha is staying at her Aunt’s house, that just happens to neighbor Dean’s. They’ve always been friends growing up and sparks fly instantly as they join forces to work on building a green space on an abandoned lot by their houses.
Here we encounter an amazing cast of supporting characters, lifelong residents of the neighborhood, sharing stories from the past, helping each other and instigating shenanigans!
“There was a fierce emotion in those words that made my head spin with possibilities I didn’t need to hope for”.
Both Dean and Tabitha have to confront the “demons” of their past that are affecting their present, and explore the future that depends on how these old, personal perceived hurts are resolved.
On The Ropes is so much more than a beautiful love story, it’s the author’s love letter to the city she adores, her hometown of Philly; as well as the expression of her fierce passion for making the world a better place by supporting and helping her fellow humans!
Another fantastic book from Kathryn Nolan. There is something so special about this author's writing and this book is no exception.
I was captivated with both Dean and Tabitha from the very beginning. This story is both sweet and steamy. These characters have so many layers to them. They are both such strong, yet vulnerable characters in their own unique ways. They are both trying to find their place and discover who they really are. You can't help but love each of them and both of them together.
One remarkable thing about this book is the way the community is like another character to fall in love with. It's very different than a small town book. Everything takes place within a few blocks. This gives the story a warm, cozy, and homey feel that is very different than I've ever read. You feel the bond and love of this community. It will make you wish you had neighbors like this in real life.
This author will always be one of my immediate one-click authors. You will thoroughly enjoy this book.
