What a captivating and heartfelt finale to this delicious duet! The angst, the drama, the healing, the romance, the emotional intensity- I just adored Birdie and Nix’s complicated but magical young love story. These Dead Promises delivers an epically enthralling finale, the perfect nexus of edgy drama and poignant emotional tension.

I fell in love with these characters in the first story, and they ran away with my heart in the second. Now that Harleigh and Nix have found their way across the barrier of longing, misunderstandings, and secrets and reconnected, they have to face both the barriers of the past and the present. Living in different worlds, the complications with their families, their insecurities about one another, their own unclear futures, and the catalyst that drove them apart and the decisions that kept them that way. Their love for each other is so easy, so natural, so beautiful- but the fear, the uncertainty, and their family drama threaten their newfound stability at every turn…and limit their opportunities to really explore their relationship. So much “star crossed” tension! So much romantic energy!

LA maintains such a tightly focused narrative in this story, one that really delves deep into the psyche of these characters and their unbreakable but still evolving romantic bond. We still have our lovable and intriguing secondary characters to entertain and support, but LA’s laser focus really stays on these two as they fall into each other, while still confronting the metaphysical and corporeal demons that plague them. Birdie's journey in particular is so transfixing, relatable, and movin. This is a girl who has faced so much adversity, who has found herself at odds with not only the two worlds she inhabits but doesn’t feel apart of but also as she’s been at odds with her own mental health, with her place in her family, and until recently, she’s felt at odds with her best friend that she felt abandoned her. Now that she has reconnected with Nix and they’ve found their way to a romantic connection that has long since been brewing, she has to confront the rest of the tumultuous noise around her. Her family, her two existences, her history, but most importantly, her own insecurities and menthol health challenges. I loved how she found self-assurance, first in her relationship with Nix and then in herself. We see her discover how strong she is, see her stand up for herself, see her fight for the live she wants instead of running from the one that has consumed her. And she does with the loving, gentle, and empowering support of the stalwartly devoted Nix.

Nix- LIKE SWOON. He’s still alpha, still has some edge, but man is a total goner for his lady and will destroy the world for her, and he melted my whole heart with how tenderly he loves his Birdie. He has his own share of struggles, and Nix has to learn how to confront his family demons as well as how to be a safe and supportive space for Harleigh. He wants her to let him in, but he has to learn to be what she needs, and my goodness does he charm and beguile with every passing page. I adore him, and I love his chemistry with Harleigh. These two broken and desperate characters find such a restorative, healing, and peaceful security in one another. I loved how LA brings the safety of familiarity to their romance with also the spark or newness and the insecurities that come from first love. Their love is magnetic, utterly intoxicating.

This duet captured everything I love about LA Cotton- new adult drama, consuming love, compelling characters, and tender connections. A fitting finale for two characters that stole my heart- and I just can’t wait for more stories in this world. This cast of characters is quickly becoming my favorite LA Cotton world, and I can’t wait to pull up a chair for the young love drama that’s up next.

I'm actually in awe of how L.A. Cotton is able to make me fall into a world and disappear between the pages, this story is raw and it feels incredibly real. I could swear I was right there with these characters, going along this emotional rollercoaster sitting beside them.

We pick up where book one left off, thrown into the uncertainties that Harleigh faces. We all know from the get go that Nix and Birdie are meant to be together, but they have so many obstacles in their way it's hard to see how they will ever overcome them.

I cannot express how much love I have for Nix, this guy's world is literally crumbling around him and yet he still uses his battered and broken body to protect Birdie, to make sure he is always by her side, he's the most selfless character I think I've ever read about, and you can't help but fall in love with him

This story wasn't easy, it's raw and it's gritty but you won't regret falling into this world and getting lost in the pages, rooting for Nix and B to get their much deserved HEA 🖤

I don’t even know where to begin with.

The only thing I know for sure is that L.A. Cotton did it again: She created another mind-blowing story I wasn’t able to put down for a second!

This story is funny, sexy and so much more.

These two are just too much to handle, they will bring you to your knees in a matter of a few pages.

It’s a rollercoaster of emotions you won’t be able to get ride off , not for a long time.

I won’t spoiler anything, I think you should go into this one blindly and just trust the story, it will lead you to a crazy place you won’t ever want to leave.

This duet really played a number on me, I can’t wait for you all to read it!!

Lianne sure knows how to deliver a story that will break your heart into a million pieces and then put it back together in the most beautiful way. The conclusion of Nix and Harleigh’s emotional romance was so much more than I expected! It's angsty, heart-melting and poignant. After the first part of the duet, I knew that more is coming, but some of the twists in this one made my jaw drop to the floor. These Dead Promises was simply phenomenal!

The touching love story aside, I love how Lianne put important issues in this book. How the money and social status is a real roadblock for some young people, and how often they're judged and bullied because of that. How adults with money often manipulate and dictate lives of their children, not caring what their kids actually want or dream about. This book also shows that in some situations it's not too late to right the wrongs and rebuild what's broken. This story is eye-opening and thought-provoking. I swear, L.A. got me all in my feels with this duet, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Darling Hill Duet is a powerful story that will wreck you emotionally, but also fill your heart to the brim. A big round of applause, Mrs. Cotton! I can't wait to see what you have up your sleeve for Z and Celeste!

The deep-seated raw emotions coupled with the non-stop emotional turmoil, on top of all the angst will cut you deep inside all whilst tearing you apart.
Only to leave you gasping for breath with having to watch Harleigh and Wren continue to navigate their way through the depths of hell, trying to overcome the obstacles thrown their way.
All to reach the HEA they deserved more than EVER!

These Dead Promises the conclusion to Darling Hill Duet series picks up right from where These Dirty Lies ended. Whilst continuing to be told through the dual perspective of Harleigh ‘Birdie/B’ Wren Maguire and Phoenix ’Nix’ Wilder.

If you thought These Dirty Lies cut deep, well then it is nothing compared to These Dead Promises.
The rollercoaster ride that Lianne had you riding continued to be emotionally charged, except it felt even more deeply intense this time round. Putting you through the wringer on a severe level, unlike in the first part to Harleigh and Nix's story.
The narrative dug deeper than ever before, allowing a further in-depth level look into the raw nitty grittiness of the many emotions which bled off each and every page, through the dual perspective given.
All whilst overflowing with a heavier amount of angsty-ness from the suspenseful drama and emotional turmoil that continued to test Harleigh and Nix.
Despite being back in each other’s arms, they could not catch a break. Always something or someone trying to cause them issues or problems and pull them apart.
Ultimately testing to see how far they could be pushed in the continuation of the trials and tribulations they faced. Before it became too much and pushed them over the edge completely.

Harleigh may have been reunited with Nix.
However it didn’t stop or end her depression or even get rid of her other mental health issues that she continued to deal with.
But that was a given considering all the issues she was faced with, like her so called family that included her father Michael, Stepmom Sabrina and Stepbrother Max. On top of the bullying at school.
She just could not catch a break, causing her anxiety to be at an all time high in those moments given the situation of it all and how it made her feel.
For that my heart definitely hurt for her, but the fact that she tried to push through proved she still had it in her to be strong and brave. And to never give up, especially knowing Nix was by her side always ready and willing to catch her if she fell.

As for Nix, words truly could not do his character justice.
Despite everything he was dealing with when it came to his family life with his dad Joe and Stepmom Jessa, school, football and his uncertain future.
The fact that he was always there for Harleigh had me swooning for him. He was the complete and total package!
Always trying to do anything and everything for Harleigh, making sure she was safe, well and knew that he had her best interest at heart. Even if it meant giving her time and space. Something you could see he struggled with, that Lianne showcased through his perspective alongside the deep-seated feelings, emotions and insecurities he was fighting on the inside. Allowing us to get a deeper feel for his character and his journey.

This book absolutely tugged on my heart strings all throughout. To the point of being on the brink of tears with having to see the pain, heartache, torture and suffering Harleigh and Nix are put through not only as individuals but as a couple too.
Seeing their relationship grow and develop over the course of time definitely hit hard and deep within the emotions they emanated.
Yet it was made worthwhile in the beautiful, sweet, passionate and romantic moments they shared whenever they came together.
Yin and yang, two peas in a pod, each other’s soulmates was what Harleigh and Nix were. Plus having known and seen the battles they fought to overcome to reach their HEA, with never giving up on one another was proof enough they were meant to be endgame.
Safe to say Harleigh and Nix are definitely one of my top fav couples written by Lianne.

Once again Lianne Cotton came through with yet another incredibly deep and intensely emotional story that delivered in all accounts when it came to telling the conclusion to Harleigh and Nix’s story in These Dead Promises. Ending with a truly perfect HEA that they deserved.
It definitely has me looking forward to Celeste and Zane’s story next, with hopes of the other characters getting books too. So the questions that were left hanging can be answered in their stories.

L.A. Cotton has penned an incredible conclusion to this story. These Dead Promises picks up right from where These Dirty Lies ended and is told perfectly through the dual POVs of Nix and Harleigh.

I wasn’t entirely prepared for the emotional roller coaster ride that this story has taken me on. Even though Nix and Birdie had found their way back together at the end of the first book, I expected that their journey was never going to be easy… and it wasn’t. I could cry (again) thinking back over everything this young couple have been through. I was never certain how this story would unfold but always willed for both Nix and Harleigh to work through their struggles and find the happiness they deserve together. They are complex individuals and have had to work hard at building a relationship alongside dealing with their own personal issues. I hated witnessing their difficulties, but I loved seeing their strength and determination.

In my opinion, Nix is one of the best male characters this author has created. I absolutely adore how much that boy will do for Harleigh, even when his own world is crumbling around him. Her needs, safety and happiness come first… always! If I had a daughter, these would be the attributes I’d want to see in her forever!

Nix and Birdie may have been the leading characters in this duet but I can’t not give their supporting characters the recognition that they deserve. Each and every one of them add to this storyline perfectly, even those I dislike immensely. I adore Celeste, and the relationship that she and Harleigh share. I love how Nix and Harleigh’s close circles always have their backs. I was quite surprised in the change I saw in one character in particular, and I loved that I didn’t always trust their motives and actions. I am so happy that the author has announced that Zane and Celeste will have their own story later this year. My only grumble regarding These Dead Promises is that I would have liked the epilogue to have shown us further into Nix and Birdie’s futures, but maybe that will happen in time.

I absolutely loved every angsty, heartbreaking, heartwarming and suspenseful emotion that this narrative put me though and I am certain you will too! I highly recommend this duet to you to read. There is also a FREE prequel titled These Dark Hearts available to whet your appetite, which I'd suggest you should read before These Dirty Lies.

These Dead Promises is the final book in the Darling Hill Duet and concludes Harleigh and Nix's intense and emotional story.

I immediately clicked with Harleigh and Nix because they share such a special bond. After what happened in These Dirty Lies, all I wanted was to see them together and be happy because they deserve it. The final installment picks up right where book 1 left us, and even though Harleigh and Nix are together, they still have to overcome many obstacles, individually and as a couple. While Nix must deal with a difficult family situation and try to get a college scholarship, Harleigh must deal with her father's betrayal and her inner demons. Both showed so much strength, and it was moving to witness what they achieved in this book. Harleigh and Nix were also there for each other, and their love was so pure. No one could have separated them, and they were dead set on making things work, even if many people were against them. Seriously, no one deserved a HEA more than they did!! Their friends were also very supportive, and I really liked them. I'm glad we'll have more of them through Celeste and Zane's book. I'm excited for these two! Max also surprised me in this book with how close he got to Nix and Harleigh. I feel like he's hiding a lot, and I'm curious to know what, so I hope he gets his own book too!

Overall, These Dead Promises was the perfect conclusion to Harleigh and Nix's story. With L.A. Cotton books, I know I'm always in for a rollercoaster of emotions, and I wasn't disappointed as they had me shedding a few tears. Harleigh and Nix are truly soulmates, and it's incredible how much they've accomplished!

What a beautiful conclusion to this duet! I adored this second book so much. I loved seeing these two together and doing every possible thing to make things work. They still had a lot going on and many bumps on the road but they overcame them together.

Nix and Harleigh are pretty special. Their story is so emotional on both sides, I found myself tearing up every once in a while. Some scenes were so powerful and filled with emotion. Every bad thing that happened just made their love and little moments more exceptional.

I loved that we got to know Max a little better. Lianne definitely redeemed him for me and I'm still dying to know what happened to this boy to make him the way he is. Lianne also managed to redeem Michael a little, I'm hoping that we get to see more of it in the other's books and how he continues working to have a relationship with Harleigh.

I'm dying for Celeste and Zane's book. So glad it's next. I need to know what happened on homecoming ahah. I hope Lianne also plans to write Nate's book somewhere in the future because that amazing guy deserves his HEA too.

This is shaping up to be an amazing series! As always, I love the secondary characters just as much as the main ones and want them all to get their own story told.

I can still remember how "These Dirty Lies" have ended and the need to know what will happen next to the main characters - Harleigh and Phoenix (Nix) that just got back to each other when some relations were revealed and pst event put in the completely different light than before.
Harleigh is a character that was cheering for the most, still broken, full of insecurities, and trying to deal with her health issues, that could make her life so so hard. She's the character that has anxiety, and I don't know how Ms. Cotton did that, but it was palpable and this is something that I'm experiencing rarely.
Nix - he loves the girl, this is real and can't be denied, but he's also very possessive and demanding, as he would like to be with Harleigh for the whole time. He also has a lot on his plate, and I'm really happy that we got to see and understand more of that! My pro-tip - just trust the author!
This author for sure knows how to write great stories - full of angst new adult romances, that have all feelings I'm looking for in this genre. I have devoured this book in one day, which is a really fast pace in my current reading life. I hope that we would not wait too long for the next story - can you guess which character?

I wasn't sure I could love Nix and Harleigh anymore than I already do. I was wrong. Their love was written in the stars and nothing was going to change that. I absolutely loved watching these two forge through every obstacle thrown at them, and there were plenty.

Harleigh had so much weighing her down. Her pains just made my heart ache. I wasn't sure where she was gonna end up at the end but I love the strength she gained.

Nix, seriously, what can I say about him?! He was not the arrogant bad boy that I initially thought he would be. He was perfect in his own way. The love he had for his friends and family was wonderful. He amazed me with just how loving and supportive he was of Birdie. Then there was how protective he was of Jessa. ❤

I love how this whole duet wraps up. Though I am very curious about Max's story now.. what spurs him on. Hmmm. But the best part is that Nix and B finally get their happily-ever-after. They finally get to be together in the light. I just love that. ❤❤

Eyes on me, Birdie. I want to watch you fly.

Birdie and Nix’s love story was never going to be easy but boy did these two go through it!

I absolutely adored all of the side characters and I am DYING for their stories. I have a feeling the next book (I’m not telling you who because I don’t think it’s been announced yet) is going to break me if the little clues we read in the book are anything to go off l.

If you love wrong side of the track romances then you will eat up The Darling Hill duet because the characters deliver angst, heartbreak and all the tension.

Nix and Harleigh were destined and you can see that just from all of the hurdles they faced. They had the whole world and sometimes Harleigh herself fighting against them being together but what I love is that La Cotton isn’t scared to bring the important issues to her stories and make her characters imperfect and relatable. That just makes me love her stories more.

Another must read from La Cotton!

A stunning conclusion to this duet. Nix and Birdie definitely had to overcome their fair share of obstacles to find their way back to one another. However, even though secrets and lies kept them apart for nine months, things are still just as complicated. Nix is still from the wrong side of the tracks, trying to earn himself a football scholarship and leave his life at the Row behind.

Harleigh has emotional baggage that will always be with her, but her strength in overcoming what she went through is a testament to her strong will. I loved her fight and determination. Their love for one another really was like a beacon of hope that could persevere through what life had given them and make it to the other side. Celeste and Max really intrigued me and I can't wait to learn more about their backstories. I am offibally hooked! Another fantastic story in what I'm sure will be another epic series of characters.

Oh my this book 😍😍. I love Nix and B ❤️❤️. This is a fantastic conclusion to the story! It picks up right where book #1 left us. I love how open Nix is with his feelings towards B now that they are a couple. Nix and B are trying to navigate their relationship and they have so many obstacles and twists and turns. Family, people from school, her own doubts. This book has drama, angst, steam and sooooo much emotion that Lianne always knows how to deliver with her writing. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this duet, diving into these characters head and being part of this world. I can't wait for more. I also love all the side characters and I'm shipping certain people so I hope they get a story at some point!

I loved Nix & Harleigh so much!!! God they were just so sweet together. I wasn’t sure how their story was going to come together but it was so good!! Plus that sexual chemistry between Zane & Celeste? Off the charts hot… they best be getting a book!

I really loved the football aspect of this one, even if we didn’t get a lot, we got a bit & that bit was soo good! I loved the relationships between Nix & his friends, those bonds just really make a book so much better in my mind. I even came to like Max in this one! I’m hoping he gets a book because I can’t wait to find out what his story is.

Nix & Harleigh deserved to get a happily ever after. It definitely wasn’t an easy road but it made for such a great read. I can’t wait to get more books from this world.

Heartbreaking, cathartic and exceptional, These Dead Promises is an absolutely incredible conclusion to Nix and his Birdie's story, and a wonderful introduction into the world of darling hill.

Reaching the height of raw emotion, Lianne weaves a heartbreaking tale of growing and overcoming. Even after finding their way back to each other Nix and Harleigh still have so much to deal with, both externally and internally, on their way to a happily ever after.
This story and it's characters are the very definition of beautifully broken. It maybe be battered and bruised, and you might get cut on some of the jagged pieces, but the end result is well worth the effort of trying to put your heart back together.

After that cliffhanger from THESE DIRTY LIES. We embark on the continuation of Nix and Harleigh's story.

These two have been through so much pain and heartache. Lies, deceit, betrayal.
Now that they're back in each other's lives, they've got alot of lost time to make up for. A lot of healing to do, trust and to open up to one another.
But of course there's the hurdles, Michael, being in rival schools, their rival football teams, catty cheerleaders, Joe.

Nix has a shot at a football scholarship that will give him a future to get out of The Row, but he doesn't think that he's worth it, let alone deserves it. He's just got His Birdie back, his other half.
He wants to help heal Harleigh. Wants to understand what she's been going though.

Harleigh hates being in a place where she doesn't belong, not wanted, not used to being noticed, she's always been invisible, but now everyone watches you, pays attention, the whispers, bullying in the halls. She overthinks scenarios. Panics, withdraws into herself, letting those dark, lingering thoughts to seep in. She has a few friends, Celeste, Nate, Chloe.
They all have their backs.

Will their love for one another be enough to pull them through?

Will Harleigh and her father come to an understanding?
I loved how Harleigh and Celeste, for being half-sisters, they bonded really quickly from the beginning. Will Max come around and start treating Harleigh better, the way she deserves? As for Sabrina, the 'wicked stepmother', I really detest her with the passion.

Will Nix get Jessa away from his father's quick temper?

I loved Nix and Birdies story.
So heartwrenching and emotional.
I felt so much for the two of them. They deserve their HEA.

Which couple could be next?
Looking forward to seeing how that's going to turn out.

Wow. I mean that was just incredible. Phenomenal. I have zero words to express how amazing this story truly was!!

The story picks up right we left off in book 1, but instead of Harleigh & Nix being apart they’re now trying to figure out how to balance a relationship in a world that’s completely against them. Harleigh was such a different character in this story, I mean she was just completely broken, the pressure of the world around her was so overwhelming and I really felt for her. But more so than that I think the incredible writing made it so easy to feel her pain, experience as your own and force you to want to make it better for you. Page after page I felt like I was right alongside her facing her struggles as if they were my own. But she had such a better support system in book 2 than she did in 1, and I loved how everyone rallied around her time and time again. And Nix, he too was broken in his own way but he was such a fighter from beginning to end he knew Harleigh was it for him and he fought so hard for their relationship, for her, for the future he was determined to give them. I absolutely adored him in book 1 and he just got so much better in book 2, but what I appreciated most was his realization that he wouldn’t always be able to help Harleigh through her struggles, he would always support her, always be a shoulder to cry on but the eye opening moment where he sees that sometimes she needs more than just his support to get through her tough moments? It was just so special for me.

This book deals with incredible dark subjects not limited to anxiety/depression, suicide, parental abuse and it’s discussed in detail on the page. So if that’s not something you think you can handle please don’t read this book. It’s a beautiful story, and the writer really makes you feel the emotions the characters are feeling but if you don’t think you can handle the tough subjects this might be a book you pass on. But if you can handle the tough stuff and the hard times this book is absolutely for you. Cotton brings you into Harleigh and Nix’s world, makes you feel like one of them and by the end you’re just wishing for their HEA. You’ll laugh and cry but more than anything you’ll come out of this story with a full heart. 5 ⭐️ all around.

This is Nix and Birdie's conclusion to their story in this Darling Hill Duet with a Prequel, and it was fantastic. They were truly meant for each other. Their story wasn't an easy one, they had to overcome a lot of obstacles and grow as individuals. You will still ride on a rollercoaster through this part of their story. It will hook you and drag your heart with every passing page. You really need to read this story.

It's a beautiful story of strength and love and what love can do with the right person by your side.

I loved how the second half of this duet delved deeper into the emotional ties between Nix and Birdie. Just because Phoenix and Harleigh reconnected at the end of book one didn't mean everything was fixed and all the emotional mess, future problems, or family issues in their lives were magically fixed.

Don't get me wrong, I love HEA's just as much as the next person, but sometimes when I read a book like this, it's a reminder that love doesn't instantly solve all your problems. Instead when love is right, with the right person, they will stand by your side through thick and thin while life may still be rocky.

While Phoenix and Harleigh knew they wanted one another, making it happen wasn't exactly easy. They lived on opposite sides of town where stigmas ran deep, which was just the tip of the iceberg.

Harleigh was still working on her mental health and just because Nix was back in her life didn't mean she was instantly fixed. Where they lived and who their family was was just another added another layer of complications for both of them.

This book was emotional and touching for so many reasons. I loved that Cotton didn't shy away from the hard issues while still keeping their love front and center.

Teenagers feel things deeply and super intense and every time Nix and Birdie came together their intensity leapt off the page.

Nix especially couldn't contain what he felt Birdie, it flowed out of him, but he also was restrained and sweet. His intensity was mesmerizing to read. I loved what these two overcame to be together and in the end only made them stronger.

I'm looking forward to continuing watching their growth in future books as I see their love only growing and getting stronger as the years go by.

Wow...An phonomanal and I mean phonomanal way to end this amazing story.... LA Cotton has done it again...I am a fan of all her books but there is always a one that just takes your heart. Well this one did.

I had to wait a few day after reading the book twice (yes twice) before I can write an honest to god review. This book has taken a my heart in many ways. The scense will replay in your mind as well as quotes from Nic "Birdie was my salvation.. as much as she was my weakness.." But my favorite quote scene is where Nix puts B's hand on hand on his chest at his heart and said "This is yours B. It always has been...Promise me you will take care of it" "I promise" to Nix telling B he does not have much but no one will love you as much as him🥰🥰🥰 Nix is the boy all boys need to learn from. He is her strength also.. I have seen where both feel like their love is not enough but it was their love that helped them find thier selfworth. Nix worthy of college and football.. For Birdie to learn to be around people again without her anxiety kicking in. She wanted to support Nix.

This book was the perfect ending to there story where LA left it open to write more on this amazing couple. I know it has left wanting to know how they are in college. LA has made it where we can find out more on other charactors in this book. Zane and Celest (their story is next) Nate , and my god I want to learn more on Max . He was a big shocker in this ending of the book.

These Dead Promises picks up shortly where book one left off. Harleigh and Phoenix have reunited and become a couple after 9 months apart. Both of them have their own insecurities and reservations about being with one another. Harleigh still stuffers from depression and mental illness. Even though she’s found Phoenix again, it doesn’t erase the dark feelings in her head. Phoenix is trying to be patient with Harleigh when all he wants is to have him by her side at all times. He’s struggling with giving her enough space and controlling is own relationship insecurities.

Honestly, Harleigh’s anxiety was giving me anxiety. I felt like she was always anxious and nervous around her father, around Nix and around her other friends. I loved that Phoenix and Harleigh were able to come together again. You could tell that these were two best friends who have been in love with each other for a long time. Phoenix was truly the star of the book. The range of emotions we get to witness from his POV was awe inspiring. He is truly a swoon worthy character.

Would have loved to see an extended epilogue into Phoenix and Harleigh’s future. If the author is continuing on this series with other couples, we may get that chance.

The author left a lot of questions unanswered when it came to Nate, Max, Celeste, Zane and even Miles. I know that the author is writing a Celeste/Zane story. I only hope that the other characters get their own story as well. Would love to see a Nate and a Max story. Chloe deserves her happy ending too.

Happily devoured These Dead Promises and I’m still reeling from all the feels!!! As one of the BEST new angsty, HS dark romance duets of 2022, this dramatic conclusion to Birdie and Nix’s journey in These Dead Promises is full of steamy desire that will consume you!

Birdie continues to struggle with finding her balance amongst the chaos of existing in two worlds—one with her boyfriend in The Row, and having a new family in Old Darling Hill. Nix resolves to always be there for Birdie, but is challenged with having to exist in a broken home, all while fighting for a future with Harleigh and succeeding as a star athlete. And when the two confront their fears, there is only one endgame.

“I love you, Nix…You are, and always will be, the boy who stole my heart.”

L. A. Cotton delivers a dark, HS sports romance unlike any of her previous works; TDP is Verona Legacy meets Rixon High, both series which I highly recommend. If you like an angsty, gripping tale that is sure to keep you enthralled by the twists and unknowns, then you must enter Darling Hill! And in the end, you will be left wanting more.

Overall, this rating is for continued reader engagement, character development and great world building. I am loving this series, and can’t wait to find out what happens next in These Defiant Souls, the next Darling Hill couple. Hopefully, we will get glimpses of Nix and Birdie and their progress. I reviewed an early copy voluntarily, and look forward to future novels by the author.

childhood-bffs-to-lovers duet

Book two of this duet is finally here and I can be back with some of my favourite characters this author has written. My love and admiration for Nix and Harleigh was formed in book one and now as I read this part of their story it was cemented. We pick up the story with no time jump thankfully I've never been a big fan of that. The pain that the separation had on both NIx but most importantly Harleigh is still fresh and I liked that it wasn't just glossed over and magically fixed because they have been reunited. There are still struggles to overcome, family expectations, school and friendship dynamics and the doubts that Harleigh herself has. Then there is Nix fighting for the girl he loves whilst dealing with his awful home life balancing all that with his chance for a future. I loved all the different dynamics at play in this storyline, the fractured father daughter relationship, the bond that Celeste and Harleigh built as sisters and not forgetting Nix's boys who were a little band of brothers. As for Max all I'm going to say is give him a chance guys he might just surprise you.

I always think that if you come to the end of a book and you don't want to let the characters go the author has done a good job and that's how I feel with both Nix and Harleigh and the secondary charcters. I know Zane and Celeste are getting a book and I am excited for it but Max has worried and intrigued me in equal measure and I want more from him.

Oh my goodness I just want to give B the longest tightest hug ever. My heart aches for her. Given everything she has gone through she is so strong. I love this group of friends who have helped her grow and taken the time to learn & help with her anxiety. Gosh Nix is a rockstar boyfriend. His love, patience & understanding are just so special. He is so much more than his POS father. Ugh so glad he got what he deserves.

Love love love that B is building stronger bonds with Celeste & Max (who’d of thought he would be tolerable lol). Definitely happy that she & Michael are working their way to a better relationship as well.

Super excited for Z & Celeste but….I need more Nate!

In Darling Hill Duet LA Cotton created one of the most emotional love story I've read. Saying, it is a a journey, will be the most accurate thing I could ever say.

I finished not long ago ARC of book no 2 and my heart still cannot cope with overwhelming emotions. Birdie and Nix are broken but at the same moment, they are beautiful and strong. They bring a lot of dramatic events, and I loved that author showed it in raw, but also very realistic way (I'm an adult woman, but last 30% of book no 2 I cried like a new born baby...)

Nyx and Birdie are destined to be with each other, and I hadn't got any doubts about since page no 1, but the fight they had to survive - it broken my heart the most. Author described perfectly how money, social status can put limits in young people's life... How these things can be used to manipulate and make someones life miserable. Thru every single page I lived in Darling Hill.... I felt every heartbreak, and pain that Nix and Birdie felt. Their story is unique, but not only because surprising plot twist. Their story was special, because it was... real.

Life is not always pretty, and can get sometimes very ugly, but if we use our chances wisely... I think everything (good) can happen.

READ THIS DUET, WHEN YOU'LL ONLY CAN !!!!! Standing ovation for this author - Darling Hill duet is a masterpiece.
