Shōtarō Ishinomori (石ノ森章太郎) was a Japanese manga artist and cartoonist. Known as the "King of Manga", he is regarded as one of the most influential manga artists of all time.
I will preface this by saying, what the hell is happening here? I get the idea of the story (bug demons come back from a newly opened sarcophagus and wreak havoc on Japan while a really swell guy is given powers to fight them) But couldn’t really explain it… it’s hard to put into words such a vivid and visceral story- it’s action packed and fun but lacks a lot of depth. This is still my introduction to Kamen rider so I am probably a bit out of my depth. I am excited to read more!
This is... really, really good. Way, way better than I expected, really. I was a bit afraid when I saw it was an Inoue manga, since the original Kuuga writer, Arakawa, is actually one of my favorite tokustatsu writers, and Inoue has a lot of good things under his belt, but at the same time, follows many tropes I'm not a fan of. But, well, I was surprised.
It follows the same basics of the original series, but changing a few elements here and there, and developing some elements a bit more. The pacing, the mystery, the was some of the series elements are adapted are all done masterfully, and some elements that were only accepted, not developed on the original series, get a lot more of attention here.
The highlights here are, of course, Godai and Ichijo. Their relationship is a bit different, but the soul is the same. Godai is a bit more developed here, while being the same nice guy.
The plot follows the first few episodes of the series, again with small changes, and a twist at the end that was really unexpected for me.
I'm really hyped at what's to come, and hope this series keeps its quality.
This book was a blind buy from my local comic book store. I've never seen the show it's based on and have little Kamen Rider experience.
This book is fun. I really love the edgelord tendencies of this manga with its american-style armed police and creepy, murderous bug creatures but that theme also clashes with the clean j-pop looks and Saturday morning cartoon personalities of its 2 protagonists. This first volume is mostly setting up who inherits the Kamen Rider suit so I'll definitely be checking out more.
Been thoroughly enjoying the series! As of the time of writing this I’m awaiting the English version of vol. 5. Great villains with an interesting “scheme.”
If I had any singular complaint, it’s probably that the riders real life identity is almost too good, to the point where he is a detriment to the team lol but who knows how the arc will finish! Can’t recommend enough!
I know nothing about Kamen Rider but my library had a copy of this so I read it. It's pretty fun, lots of horror (not for kids) and it has a memorable main character. I want to read the rest, and check out the other Kamen Rider stuff.
