When the unthinkable happens…
When her best friend disappears from a party at a haunted house attraction, Laurie Arbo fears the worst. Ashley would not just up and leave. As days turn into weeks, it becomes clear that she is not coming back. But without a body, proving that a crime has been committed—let alone unmasking the culprit—is a tall order.

The truth should come first.
All eyes are on Ashley’s boyfriend, who is being cagey. But Laurie’s own partner, Nate, is keeping secrets too. On that fateful night, his clothes were covered in blood, which he swears wasn’t Ashley’s. Refusing to accept the man she loves might be a murderer, Laurie decides to believe him. Yet, unable to put the past behind them, they drift apart.

But what if it’s ugly?
Seven years later, while working on a TV documentary about a local family drama, she reconnects with Nate, and the pieces start falling together. As Laurie draws closer to learning what happened that night, she realizes the truth might be the one thing she doesn’t want to uncover.

Ashley goes missing after a Halloween party on a farm in a small town.
Laurie is destroyed after losing her best friend and roommate.
Nate tries to be there for her afterwards but it only tears their relationship far apart causing them to go their separate ways.

Seven years later, Laurie returns to town on business and only Nate can help her. He’s married now and Laurie is living with her famous actor boyfriend.

An unputdownable novel that has you diving in and having to know what happened in the past. Amazing read, for my first book by this author, I can’t wait to read more of her books.

“All good stories begin with a girl and end in heartbreak. Ours is no different.”

I loved this story!
This book grabbed me right from the start and I couldn’t put it down! Each character had their own unique personality and of course, secrets.
Whenever I thought the story would go one way, I was hit by another twist, secret, and/or lie. Fault Lines is spooky, dark and so entertaining!
This adult mystery is a twisty tale about a girl who goes missing and the price of the truth. It is also set in Canada, which is another big plus for me!

I would recommend this for anyone looking to get sucked in an enthralling story which will keep you guessing till the end.
I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I really enjoyed this novel. The characters are very well-written, the writing flows well, and there’s enough intrigue and twists and turns to keep you turning the page.

Laurie’s best friend vanishes after a Halloween party out in the backwoods of Canada. Laurie having gone to bed drunk, can’t remember the night clearly, but what she does remember is that her boyfriend Nate’s clothes were covered in blood – surely he can’t have anything to do with Ashley’s disappearance?

They split up, but years later, Laurie’s work takes her back to her past, and she’s finally forced to confront the truth.

As the story unfolds, our ideas about the characters and their motivations unfold too, and they reveal things about themselves that add to the intrigue of the story. That said, I did feel that Erin was a bit of a missed opportunity – I was expecting more from her and her potential didn’t feel realised.

Laurie, though, is a great character; it’s very easy to believe in her and the way she behaves and to sympathise with her. Her confusion and her emotions are so well portrayed.
The settings work very well too, and there’s a very creepy and threatening feel to the narrative.

One of the strengths of the novel for me was the smaller storyline around Ashley’s mum and her frustration and fear around her daughter’s disappearance. She’s another really well-written and fully realised character.

There are a few issues with tense, however, with lots of switches from past to present that don’t really work, and some of the dialogue feels rather formal.

But overall this is a very well-written and enjoyable novel

“Fault Lines” a debut novel from Tsveti Nacheva is a gripping murder mystery with lots of twists and turns set in Canada.
The scene is set at a young adults boozy Halloween party where a girl, Ashley, goes missing. Laurie Arbo, her best friend and roommate has little to no memory of what happened but suspects her boyfriend Nate may have had something to do with it, when he arrives home in the morning covered in blood, which he passes off as fake from the party decor.
Seven years later, Laurie has moved away, is in another relationship, working on a tv show investigating mysterious happenings “Fault Lines”. A case involving reincarnation, abuse, murder draws her back to her home town and connections. Nate has moved on (or has he?) and his family may or may not be connected to her case. Ashley has never been found and the ramifications of her disappearance breed further distrust, fear, hate and confusion.
The writing is clear and descriptive, pulling the reader into the story. The characters are human and flawed, blame and guilt underlie relationships…..can there be a happy ending?
I really enjoyed this novel and look forward to more from this author. Thanks to Book Sirens for the advance reading copy.

What had me gripped from the first page was the exquisite, jewel-like writing that makes this book a truly fabulous read. The phrasing is short and crisp, the story flows, and the language is so strikingly beautiful that one might wonder if this is needed for a mystery. For me, that made the well-thought-out story even more compelling and I believe that anyone who reads for the thrill of the journey will be delighted.
The plot itself makes you wonder from the start and holds your interest throughout. Somewhat ordinary characters find themselves entangled in rather extraordinary twists and turns. They are not perfectly likable and what they say and do does not always make much sense… But further down the line, this adds up authenticity to the well-crafted narrative. I did enjoy how things unwind at the end, leaving you wondering once again and letting you judge for yourself.
An author who comes out with such an intriguing, brilliantly written first book, is already creating a brand that is worth watching.

I give this book five stars. I was delighted to see that it was unashamedly Canadian. The plot line was unusual, certainly not a “cookie cutter” plot, with an unpredictable ending. Once I started reading the book it was difficult to put down. The characters were well rounded and very believable. No one was completely bad nor completely good. It was easy to relate with their behaviour because it was so “normal”. Ms Nacheva’s writing style is quite unique. Her prose is very tight with not one superfluous word yet the book is full of wonderful unexpected imagery. I would highly recommend it and I certainly look forward to reading more of her books.

Twists and Turns!

Was it Murder or Accident? You won't know until the end. It is complex and convoluted. Just keep reading! I never try to figure it out, I just go with the flow and am surprised as the Author wishes. Enjoy!

In her debut novel, Tsveti Nacheva has crafted a cleverly twisted piece of Canadian noir, a genre that I have just now discovered, to my great delight.

In Fault Lines, Toronto-based reporter Laurie Arbo is haunted by the unsolved disappearance of her best friend seven years earlier. When given an opportunity to investigate an even colder case in the same small town where her friend went missing, Laurie jumps at the chance to revisit her past. It’s a good thing she no longer has feelings for her still attractive and not-so-happily married ex-boyfriend, or so she insists. Most of the residents of Solway welcome her back with open arms, but the ghosts of the past are not quite so forgiving.

Nacheva has a gift for imagery that brings characters alive, using language that sparks the imagination. More than once, an apt simile tickled the funny bone, such as the description of a car as “small and cramped, like a space capsule on course for re-entry,” while others hinted at malice, such as Laurie’s observations about her ex, Nate, and his wife, Erin:

"He is burlier now, stronger. It is obvious from the photos, too—his shoulders span half the frame. Erin fills the rest with benevolent largesse, majestically smug like a tsarina. But there are memories of our own in the room too."

For those of us who find it hard to believe there can be anything noir about Canadians, Nacheva disabuses us of that notion with a cast of characters who slowly reveal themselves to be as capable of jealousy, vindictiveness, deception, and murder as any self-respecting mystery reader could hope for. To say more would ruin the surprises in store for the reader as Laurie draws closer to the dark truths at the heart of both mysteries. Rest assured, however, that you are in good hands with this author, who spins a tale that will keep you guessing all the way to the satisfying conclusion. And probably beyond, too.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review, but I plan to be at the front of the line to purchase a copy of my own, and I encourage anyone who loves their mysteries as dark as a Canadian winter night to do the same!

Great book that is difficult to put down, once you get started! The murder mystery combined with the personal story of the main character elevates the book and gives it deepth and additional layers compared to most other crime stories.

I hope to see more books from Nacheva in the future!

I was in the mood for a dark, creepy book for Halloween and this one delivered. The writing is both evocative and crisp, depicting the scenery with vivid imagery. I love atmospheric books in small town settings! There are several mysteries at play here, so just when you think the answer is obvious, the book pivots and off you go in another dark direction.
I found the main character and some of the side characters to be distasteful, but those unreliable traits and selfishness really worked for the narrative. Feeling off balance and wondering who to trust is part of the fun in this book.
Great read for a dark and stormy night!

Fault Lines was a FUN read for me. This is dark, twisty murder mystery - not my typical genre - but I really enjoyed diving in and wondering what would happen next. Just when I thought I had an idea where the story was going it would go in a completely different way, but it all came full circle in the end.

The story begins with a bang: at a haunted house party with celebration, drunkenness, and bitter jealousy (the perfect recipe for something to go horribly wrong). We get to see it unfold through the eyes and mind of the main character, Laurie, who is realistic and also incredibly interesting as a character. We watch her develop and struggle as a college student then jump to seven years later when she's at the height of her career and personal life. The imagery of the setting transported me to Autumn in Canada in a vivid and haunting way. I read this during the week leading up to Halloween, which set a great cozy, eerie mood for the season, but wasn't scary in the sense that I couldn't sleep at night!

I loved how beautifully the language was crafted throughout the entire book. Each page was filled with introspective, witty expressions that were very original yet illustrated the thoughts and scenery so clearly that I truly felt immersed and engaged in the story. It was easy to get sucked in and keep reading. Would love to see more from this author!

I really enjoyed this book. The pace was quick and the story kept my attention. Things got busy for me and I had to put the book down for a couple of days. I found myself thinking about the story and Laurie and Nate. I was anxious to see how the mystery would play out. I was not disappointed. Some of the developments took me by surprise but it all came together so well. Well done! I am grateful I had the opportunity to get a sneak peak.

This story grabbed me instantly from the brief synopsis that I read. An intriguing story of love, murder, secrets and regrets. Full of suspense, twist and turns and an ending that I never saw coming.

The tale begins in Solway, Laurie Arbo is at a Halloween party, with her boyfriend Nate Stone, when her best friend and roommate, Ashley, goes missing. After a night of partying, hungover and exhausted, Laurie has little recollection of the nights events. Her boyfriend comes back from a very early morning run, acting strange with clothes covered in blood, which he says is from one of the Halloween decorations. She's not sure but decides to let it go. The police are not convinced that foul play is involved and the case grows cold. Days turn into years and Ashley remains missing. Laurie finishes college and her and Nate grow apart. She moves to Toronto to begin a new life.

Seven years passes when Laurie is called back to Solway. She's working for a tv show and is back to investigate a sordid event from 1974. While asking questions around town she reconnects with Nate and the Stone family and that's when things take an unexpected turn. As Laurie starts to have flashes of the Halloween nights events, will she finally learn the truth about what happened to Ashley, or is this the one truth that needs to remain buried?

This was a fantastic story. Intense, thrilling, suspenseful. I really enjoyed it. I am a little on the fence of how the ending went down though I wont give any spoilers. You'll just have to read it for yourself. The story is fast paced and I felt the characters had depth. I felt it was wrapped up well too. I am excited to see what else this author comes up with. I received this book free from Booksirens for an honest review.

A thrilling, relatable, and engaging read!

Nacheva does a wonderful job in creating a vivid and tangible world. The characters were extremely relatable and the references were perfectly Canadian (fellow Ontario resident here)! Her descriptions are masterful and I could easily envision the story play out like a movie in my mind. I was hooked from the start, devouring this quickly and eagerly. I would have loved more closure and details for the ending, but that’s purely based on me just wanting to know everything about this town’s intriguing and haunting history! Altogether, FAULT LINES left me excited to see what more Nacheva has up her sleeve.

Good story with an lots of pulls in unexpected directions within it. I felt that sometimes there was too much “bulking” detail given and I skimmed some pages. That said it was a great plot with clever integration of different era’s and situations. Loved the characters and how they were portrayed, relatable and feasible. No weird unexplained things and not a boring totally predictable plot.

Good book with a reasonable ending but I wanted it to be a bit more spectacular. I wanted Erin to be a bit more unhinged and spiteful! Or for Laurie to dig up something really juicy about Erin!

Essentially it is a love story that is cut short because of a “Halloween party”!!

Thank you to the publisher for giving me a copy of this book!

Okay I was intrigued by the angle of the tv show. I like books following tv show filmings, especially if it's a thriller/mystery/horror novel.

Characters: I liked the characters well enough. I wish Erin had more of a villainous role in the novel. As vindictive as she's made out to be, she doesn't really do a whole lot for the majority of the novel. I liked Laurie and Nate just fine.

Atmosphere: The farm is such a good place for a thriller. I'm a sucker for isolated thrillers. I love the small town feels and just wish there was more.

Writing: The writing was fine. I found a couple of grammatical mistakes but nothing major.

Plot: I think the plot had a lot going on. I feel like there wasn't really a satisfying ending to either of the plotlines, and the book ended very suddenly I think.

Intrigue: I was intrigued by both plotlines, and both plotlines kind of fell flat for me. The intrigue was done well through the whole novel though.

Logic: I'm still reeling about the logic of what happened to Erin in the end. I just don't believe that would've logically happened. It was too nice and easy for Laurie and Nate. I think that's what bothers me the most.

Enjoyment: Overall I really did enjoy the book, but I really didn't like the ending as much as the rest of the book. Overall the ending is what led me to a 4 star rating

At a Halloween party, Laurie’s best friend and roommate goes missing. The next day, hungover and confused, Laurie finds her memory of the night before to be hazy, lacking. Seven years later, Laurie returns to the same small town, haunted by the memories of her friend, who hasn’t been seen since.

Laurie is a flawed, intriguing character and her dynamics with the others had me gripped from the start. This mystery and these characters really did consume me in a way that not many books do. Nacheva is great at witty dialogue and clever descriptions that vividly paint every scene. The book is fast paced in a way that holds weight to every chapter and manages to tie up all lose ends, to settle every score. Nacheva is a fantastic writer. As this is her debut, I’m very, very excited to see what might come next from her.

Colourfully descriptive usage of language although on occasions I felt a bit at sea with the local lingo. it was easy to pick up the gist of it but still the slangy sort of words threw me a bit. I was interested in this book at first, and I found the main character interesting too. What became a surprise was that as predictable as some parts were, the ending came out of nowhere and was beyond horrible. It didn’t mesh with the characters at all, and it felt a little rushed. It was really well-written, and I did keep reading to find out what would happen so that right there means it was a fairly good story. I just cannot get over that ending.

I was very disappointed in the ending of this story. It was interesting, convoluted, with plenty of suspense, and unexpected developments. However, the ending ruined the whole thing for me. The characters who had exhibited certain personality traits (honesty, trust, responsibility, etc) suddenly decided that getting what they felt they needed, justified destroying anyone who stood in their way. I am rather used to the antagonist exhibiting this type of behavior in fiction, but it was a big letdown for the protagonists to behave this way and not show any difficulties with it at all. I won't be reading another book by this author.

I received a review copy from BookSirens and this is my honest opinion.
