I read Song of the Dawn on Halloween and it was the perfect candidate for a spooky fantasy read. Angela Ford delivered a ghostly atmosphere combined with a spicy and enchanting romance! This is the second book in the Tower Knights series, but you can read them as a standalone since each book focuses on a Knights tale and you can follow the story from any starting point.

I've read multiple books by Angela and she has a way of writing that captivates the reader. Unlike her Pawn series, which is more action-filled, the Tower Knights focuses more on the romance and the mystery. I felt like an investigator alongside Mila, helping her unravel the mystery behind the Dawn Inn and the suspicious occurrences that happen there. I was for many years a musician, like Mila, which is why this series touches my heart profoundly. Just like the first book, Music of the Night, the descriptions of music are so tangible I can imagine the sound from the pages.

Mila is a violinist with a passion for music, she is in desperate need of a job to help her family sustain their debts. When an opportunity arises to play at the magical far away inn, The Dawn, she jumps at the chance. What she didn't expect is that the Dawn contains many dark secrets: strange creatures who roam about in the shadows, sudden disappearances of the guests, whispers of magic and a song that calls to her...

I await eagerly for the third book in the series. Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy!

*I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

*NA

I was immediately curious about Ezra's story. Who is the sorceress? What has she taken from Ezra? And why? Most importantly what must he do to get it back?

From the moment we get to read Mila's story, I immediately forgot all the questions I had about Ezra's story. It also didn't matter that I completely forgot because Mila her story, the Inn, the stories of the other characters especially Endia and Giselle's story were very intriguing and kept me wanting to read more.

The book continues to captivate and reads very smoothly. Towards the end I found it unfortunate that the focus started to become more and more on just the main characters alone and the importance of the other characters faded away.

Pros of the book: I found a variety of characters, mentioning breastfeeding without sexualizing it, treating people as people at work and not as slaves who have to work themselves to death (too little attention is given today to employees' mental health, work-life balance, ect. ).

Cons of the book: Open stories at the end of the book. I am left with some questions (what will become of Rachelle? How will the reopening of the Inn go without Ginger? Who really knew the whole truth about Ezra and his story?).

I got a beauty and the beast retelling vibe at times.

Overall, I think it's a great book with a beautiful cover. Angela J Ford continues to improve her books.

I myself have read Music Of The Night and almost all the short stories of The Enchanted Wilwood series. I really think this book is an improvement.

I loved this book so much it was even better than the first book I just love these dark romances so very much. I loved the characters so much especially Mila and Ezra so very much I loved the way their romance developed they had that great chemistry I am happy that it took a while for the steamy parts to start so I feel the romance was very well written. There were many great characters in this book it helped make the world feel lived in everything was fleshed out so well. I love the musical element of this story it adds another interesting bit to the story how Ezra was a tortured soul who finally found someone worth staying around for and Mila fought so very hard to keep him with her. I loved the plot it starts with the meeting of the two MCs Mila then goes to work at the inn falls in love learns many secrets fights to save the man she loves and has a happily ever after looking forward to reading more of these.

“I see. You toss my words right back at me. Well, then we shall have to do this again.” Lifting my hand, he brushed his lips over my skin. Every inch of my body tingled in anticipation. Winking, he released me. “Until next time, Mila.”
i definitely preferred Song of the Dawn to Music of the Night, the plot, story, romance, and characters were more interesting and kept me intrigued till the end. I just wish that we hadn’t gotten such an open ending. The Beauty and the Beast retelling was done with some interesting twists but it was wrapped around the overall story pretty well and I enjoyed how it started with Ezra’s pov but was almost solely a Mila pov story. The hints of his past were done pretty well and I liked how the unveiling secret part was slowly done (as slowly as can be done in a fast paced book).

This was such a fun romance book and was definitely the ease in that I needed to get back into reading again, however there are a few things that made me feel slightly detached from the story. While the romance was very much instalove, it’s something that I personally don’t really mark anything off against, however it’s the build up in the plot as a whole. I feel as though the story could’ve been stretch out a little bit longer in order to fully flush out the plot and romance. This book is very much an extremely fast pace book and could’ve been slowed down slightly to fully understand and be immerse in the world and the characters. However, besides those few flaws in my eyes, I really enjoyed reading Song of the Dawn!

This is a dreamers book the theme is so uplifting underneath it all. You have a dream, chase it, if that door shuts well you never know - that window might just open up. You get rejected, that's plating for your armor for the next round.

We all deserve the opportunity to pursue what we want. - Avelina to Mila

Oh and don't even get me started on the sheer cottagecore-esque atmosphere, harvest festival, picky cows, maybe woodland Fey and hot shirtless men hauling in the catch of the day(okay maybe that last one isn't cottagecore). Lagoda and the neighboring valley makes me want to start a silent vlog on youtube but first I need to ditch the city and buy a quaint little farmouse and some chickens.

Plot/Storyline/Themes:
Her Tower of Knights series has yragedy woven so deep into it that the overall feeling of each plot so far has been melancholy, magnificent(gowns and vistas) and just a little dash of hope. This one has the fire of ambition. Ezra and Mila are not to be trifled with as they crash into each other's goals and dreams. Of course the connection would be fire.

Two Sentences, A Scene or less - Characters: -1⭐
Here's my gripe. The men in these stories get 1 chapter pov for every 5 chapters of the female main character. I mean I get that we interact with them throughout the book via the FMC pov but if you're going to switch pov at least give them 2 pov chapters per 3 of the FMC? The MMCs just orbit the FMC which is fine I suppose because I do love Mila.

Favorite/Curious/Ludicrous/Unique Scene: :
1. Oooh lala wine tasting with Ezra ouy on the balcony overlooking gorgeous orange trees. Makes me want to head to Bordeaux Sip wine overlooking the riviera.

2. Oh wow! The Lonely-hearts/cupid scam is alive and kicking even in this world. Also that shit turned dark real quick. From scam to fatality faster that Barry Allen (let's be real he's like maybe the 5th fastest person on the planet as proved in every CW episode of The Flash).

Favorite/Curious/Ludicrous/Unique Quotes:
🖤 “When I woke, the place between my legs ached. I lay in bed, relishing, reliving the dream because it solidified what was forbidden.” (Can confirm, that dream was something)
🖤 “He was so handsome it hurt.” (hhmmm sometimes it do be like that Mila)
🖤 “I tell you about the darkness of my past, and all you say is thank you?
What kind of wondrous creature are you?”
(insert appropriate lovey dovey cooing sounds here)

Favorite/Curious/Ludicrous/Unique Concepts :
■ Gods of The Seasons
■ Mystical memory loss
■ Lagodian Legend
■Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs as waxed poetically by Ezra

If you hear the sound of a sad violin in the middle of the night, do not go searching for the player, for what you find may be a nightmare come to life. 🎻 Eee this was exciting, romantic, and sooo spooky. Honestly, I got scared lol. I wasn’t expecting the book to get that spooky! It would be the perfect read for October! Other than that, the romance was beautiful and our hero was full of mystery. The entire inn is shrouded in mysteries and lore, and Mila has no idea what she’s gotten herself in to, and it was so fun to find out what was going on. 👀 I read majority of this in one sitting, I couldn’t put it down. Angela Ford’s books are always an adventure! 🥰💙💜🎻

This ever loving novel!!! Ezra immediately had my heart.

Oh I love Mila’s heart for her family, and her pursuit of music.

But I also ADORED Ezra’s heart and passion and desperation for love and redemption.

This was a beautiful tale of music, and discovery, and passion with the strong cords of burning love threaded throughout.

Easy 5 stars and will be a reread again I’m sure!

Mila loves to play the violin and aspires to follow her dream, but fails in an audition which she had set her heart on, only to be sent an offer of a job to play at an inn away from the city. She accepts this mysterious offer and finds herself in a desolate inn called the dawn, out in the mountains in a castle shrouded in mist owned by a beautiful other worldly man who she immediately feels attracted to. Strange things happen in the inn, shadows which scare her and disappearances which intrigue her but most of all she is intrigued by Ezra who seems so interested in her. Ezra is a tower knight banished from the service of the sorceress he had once pledged to serve. He was now bound by her command to bring to her a demon through the portals he had the power to open. She had a part of his soul which she in turn promised to return to him once he brought the magic she needed, then he would be free of her forever. Ezra wanted a future but knew he endangered all those who got close to him as the sorceress was pitiless and vengeful and he worried for Mila the woman he had fallen totally and madly in love with. Could they survive unscathed and enjoy the beautiful romance which was budding between them? I love the characters in the story, Ezra so chivalrous and now such a good person trying to make up for his sin, and Mila innocent and naïve but so courageous in the face of the unknown she traversed to save the man she loved. A romantic tale, full of both love as well as deep shades of darkness which go to make this a very thrilling read!

Angela Ford always does such an amazing job of creating beautiful, enchanting worlds and this book was no exception. As someone who grew up as a musician, I’ve been loving the musical elements of this series and really enjoyed that aspect of this particular book. It was fun to unravel the mystery and story of Ezra along with Mila as the story progressed. They two of them definitely had chemistry! This book definitely had a gothic feel to it with the setting and the mysteries of the inn and Ezra’s past. The perfect steamy, gothic fantasy read with a beautiful musical thread weaved throughout it!

Highlights:
🌟 Elaborate world building and enchanting world
🌟 Beautiful prose
🌟 Gothic Vibes
🌟 Musical elements and musical magic system
🌟 Unraveling Ezrra’s past and his connection to the sorceress
🌟 Ezra and Mila’s chemistry 🔥

3⭐️/1-2🌶

Gothic romance, supernatural creatures lurking about in the darkness, magic, heroine trying to fulfill her dreams, and a mysterious, handsome man who captures her attention… I was definitely intrigued.

This book was part of the “A Tower Knights Tale” series, I had read the first book, “Music of The Night”, which was great so when I saw there was another book in the series, I wanted to dive back into the series and meet the new characters Mila and Ezra. In a way, you could read the books as stand-alones, but some of what happened in the first book was mentioned in, “Song of The Dawn”, so I would recommend reading this first book as well.

I liked the whole aspect of the mystery going on around The Dawn Inn, and Mila trying to navigate her way around especially since she could sense that something wasn’t quite right considering the things she saw while working at the Inn. Mila wanted to play her violin in the symphony in the city, but due to not meeting the standards of playing during her audition, she didn’t make the cut, but she still practiced in hopes that she might be able to audition again and finally achieve her dream of becoming a well known violinist in the symphony. Mila was a sweet, kind natured woman who, didn’t judge people, she was very open minded and was generally pleasant around everyone. In other words, Mila was the kindest person you could ever meet.

The biggest mystery surrounding The Dawn Inn included the mysterious Ezra himself. From
The beginning, it was made clear that Ezra got himself entangled in some kind of deal, he was shackled to something or more like had to work for a certain someone in order to get back something he lost. By completing the tasks set before him, he was trying to regain his freedom. Despite Ezra having to deal with his own obstacles, he seemed somewhat shy, cute, and an absolute charmer when he was around Mila. Whenever Mila and Ezra would spend time together, you could tell they made each other feel comfortable, at ease, and a passion they had felt for one another.

For the longest time (at least in my opinion) Mila and Ezra had never experienced love, so for them meeting and spending whatever time they could spare to spend time together highlighted just how much they had a positive effect on each other, as well as they both genuinely would brighten with smiles when seeing each other (awwwwww). As Mila and Ezra spent more time together, the passion between increased, and let’s just say they expressed their love for one another plenty of times.

Overall, the book was good, I enjoyed Mila and Ezra’s relationship and of course them having their happy ending was so sweet. This book was fairly paced, but also could be a quick read since the plot wasn’t difficult to follow along. There was magic, romance, some spice, mystery, and monsters lurking in the dark. I still personally loved the first book more, but I still enjoyed reading this book as well.

This review was originally published on Myth and Magic Book Club

Myth: 3.5/5

The gothic haunting, but naturally atmospheric Dawn Inn is the perfect setting for this fantasy romance. Angela J. Ford’s epic fantasy roots find their way into her fantasy romance. I see this mostly in the pace, a slow build and in the inevitability of the conclusion. Neither of which are surprises in a romance, it just feels like epic fantasy.

Mila isn’t my usual favorite heroine, she has an unassuming nature and quiet strength. Once willing to take a chance on love, she is determined to hold on to it.

Magic: 3/5

A wonderful October read with a gothic inn and things that go bump in the night. This is offset by breathtaking nature and a blurring in natural lines between worlds. Expect some portal magic, old gods and forgotten power.

Overall: 3/5

A sweet, but still steamy, fantasy romance with roots in epic fantasy and a heroine willing to risk her heart and follow her passions.

Rezension (deutsch)

Echt Schade.

Das Bucht hat von mir 4/5🌹bekommen.

Liebe Grüße rosarium🌹

Review (english)

„Song of the Dawn“, from Angela J. Ford, is the second book of the Tower Knights – Series and after reading the first one, which I liked, I had to get this one.
So, I loved the village premises. It was full of folklore, magical myths and interesting little things, which made the whole outlook of the story, like a fairytale. And it kinda felt like, I was unravling the secrets within this setting. As always, Angelas writing was here lyrical and beautiful for my musical heart. The overall charging and the action, also the monster, was well done and I can´ t complain here.
Mila was a strong, but troubled women, which just wanted to find her place in the world and she found it in the unlikest places. It made really relate to her. But sometimes I wished, she would have investigated a little more about the ongoings of things. Ezra was great love interest, full of compassion and conflicts. But, somehow I was missing the spark between us. Like, I could understand him, but didn´´ t feel for him. Quite confusing.
I found the story a bit lacking. Like, there were no big plottwists or reveals. Most of the things you could guess happening and that made the story to predictable for my taste. Mhm.

So, to sum everything up. I liked, no, loved the premises, the folklore and the Mila as our protagonist. I would recommend it.

I gave the book 4/5🌹.

Lots of love, rosarium

This book was fine, but it fell short for me in several ways that made me not rate it higher.

A trope I’m not fond of is instalove or instant attraction and that was a big part of this book. Right from the jump Ezra and Mila were super attracted to eachother. Sometimes that can be fine because it’s not unrealistic to be attracted and drawn to someone, but I think it’s important to establish extreme chemistry quickly. Maybe some tension in them not entirely getting along, a conflict of interests or on the flip side, tons of chemistry by having a common goal, relating in a way that others around them can’t. In terms of this book, I wasn’t buying it. There wasn’t much time they got to spend together, and their discussions were always surface level and obscure, before they started being romantically involved. I felt no chemistry and with this book being heavily focused on love, I wasn’t buying it. I didn’t feel anything between the two besides lust.

As for the story, that was also fine. Nothing super spectacular and nothing entirely terrible. Mila goes to work at The Dawn by playing the violin even though she’s not super great at it, and without spoiling anything, Ezra is involved in The Dawn in a way that does add a little bit of friction with their relationship. Anyway, Mila experiences a lot of frightening things, by seeing weird things and hearing weird noises, such as a violin playing in the night. She has to unravel the mystery of everything, while deciding whether or not she should let herself fall for Ezra.

I think as far as the plot goes there is a great concept but I would have liked to see more of that developed and focus less on the relationship. Everything also came to a conclusion very quickly and easily which is another pet peeve of mine. I just prefer things drawn out more.

What I did really like was Mila choosing herself for once after caring for her injured mother. She made sure her mom was taken care of first but I think that is a wonderful addition, and I think more stories should have women putting their lives and goals first.

I also liked the world building for this one. The author writes really descriptive scenes that are enchanting and picturesque which I am a huge sucker for.

Ultimately, I think this book comes down to preference. If you’re not bothered by instalove and want a book centered on love, I think you will really enjoy this.

TW: mention of homelessness, poverty, death, grief, child abuse, self harm, asylums, child death, bullying, war. Body shaming, alcohol, missing person, infidelity, injuries, blood, sexual content, vomit.

◦ I've received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ◦

Song of the Dawn has been an interesting read for me. It's been a long while since I've read a NA book entwined with fantasy and mystery.

The mystery from this book has been really delicious, especially with the spooky season and that gloomy feeling that I feel all around me. The NA part of this book has been spicy! I can't say it has been very smutty but I can say that it will make you blush. Even tho I'm not a shy person whenever I read some more naughty things in books I always find myself getting a little bit shy.

The pace of the book has been pretty slow till towards the end when things started catching a faster pace. The pace of the book didn't affect my pleasure of reading, in fact, I've found it perfect for this type of story for the pace to be a little bit slower. I didn't feel there is any character development because the heroine didn't have to go through a lot of life experiences to need to change and grow, but I loved the fact she didn't cower when was faced with different situations and just put her big girl pants and fought through it. And I really loved the fact she wasn't shy of letting her desires show, she knew what she wanted when she wanted and that was an empowering thing because even girls love sex and I loved that from the book.

There were a couple of moments where I couldn't get those butterflies or those big emotions that will shake me to my core and I had trouble with that a little bit because I'm big on feeling my character's feelings and just immerse myself into the story and lose myself - which happened, but I felt a little bit disconnected on some instances when came to their feelings. Overall I loved the story and is such a great book to read during October.

Song: Yearning Hearts - Eternal Eclipse

I am so sorry, but this book was so boring it was a struggle to read.

The story in itself was fine, okay, it wasn't too good, but it wasn't awful either. My problem was the writing style. And maybe it's a me problem, but it was horrible.

Example: (Sadly contains spoilers)

This sentence is in the book after we discussed twice what happened to fucking Endia. TWICE. Throughout the whole book if a piece of information was brought up it got explained again, and again, and again like the author expected me to be a goldfish and forget it rated I read it.

The quiet would have been perfectly fine if it would have only contained this : "I chewed my lower lip, wondering if she was thinking of Endia"

Because we had the background story, we knew who Ednia is, and we knew what happened.

And after all these info dumps, the whole book got monotone and boring.

The other thing was that the main characters had no chemistry, ZERO. Maybe I just love my slow-burn romances, and longing looks, but this felt ew. Like my boss is leering at me, and trying to flirt, and I am an oblivious little girl, and then OH NOW WE ARE KISSING, AND IN LOVE. Like bro- pls.

Overall the biggest problem with the book, was that it was written in a way that book blurbs are. And I think I did this comparison and the last book too. If we mention something, we write every backstory about it down again and it's so unnatural. (Just like some convos. When they were talking about the past and shit it felt so so so forced it hurt.)

I hope it's me and not the book. But sadly I won't be reading from this author again. If u love it go ahead, but it won't be my bowl of soup.

My New Year’s resolution is to actually start reviewing books consistently instead of just rating then forgetting about them 🫶🏾

I decided to randomly pick this up on my train ride back to uni as I thought this would be a fun, short, spooky read for my 4 hour trip.
Unfortunately this fell short - I don’t really read gothic literature but thought this would be a fun place to start as I enjoyed “lured by the dusk”. The first half of the book started off well, and I zoomed through it in less than a day. However, during the second half, I started to get a little bored with the characters. At first, I was under the impression that Ezra was mysterious and we would find out more about him, but by the end I realised that he simply had no personality. He was giving us nothing and he was kind of just there for the most part.
I liked Mila’s character and her POV kept me entertained for a while, but that only took me so far as nothing actually happened in this book - genuinely if you asked me tomorrow one thing that happened I wouldn’t be able to tell you.

Plot summary:
FMC plays violin and is asked to work at an Inn
The Inn is creepy and the MMC (the owner) is supes mysterious (surprise surprise)
They fall in love (surprise surprise) but the MMC is hiding secrets (*GASP*)
FMC finds out his secrets then they work together to defeat evil! (YAY)
The end.

Overall this was a boring read and despite being short, felt way too long. Maybe one day I’ll give Angela J Ford another go but most likely not in the foreseeable future sorry!
Maybe I’m being more harsh than usual after finishing one of the BEST romances I’ve ever read (the Wedding Menu) so my standards are VERY high at the moment, but still I don’t think I could give this more than a 2⭐️.

3.5 stars….

It took me a while to get into this book and actually finish it (I’m a start & finish a book in the same day kind of reader) as I struggled with it. The story was slow and had irrelevant descriptions about the daily chores etc which was okay but it made the story drag unnecessarily.

I loved the chemistry between Mila & Ezra and thought the author did a good job of building the connection slowly and in a believable manner as well as the world building, to an extent. It was of course a HEA but it left some questions unanswered…. Unless I missed it (I did skim and skip some pages):

1) The story about Rachelle and her dad was never fully addressed - how he died and how she became how she was.
2) The Lady that died, we don’t know what (specifically) or how and why she was killed.
3) We still don’t know what really happened to Endina.

Please note, I may have got the supporting characters’ names wrong/misspelled them but I’m too lazy to look them up.

Overall - good read but nothing amazing. I will definitely check out her other work.

okaaay this was such an entertaining and engaging read, such a fun balance of spookiness, enchantment and mystery (with just the right amount of spice obviously)
tbh it would've been a perfect halloween read but oh well 😅

i was pleased with the way music was merged into the story, it felt purposeful and natural and it made complete sense within the world and the narrative
the romance was also beautifully crafted, the slow burn and tension were absolutely delicious and i genuinely have no complaints there. it was paced just right and made the emotional payoff feel earned 🥹

i can't really talk about specific plot points without spoiling the story but i can say that the ending was incredibly satisfying despite its bittersweet tone (i just wish we knew what happened to my girl ginger 😭)

It was a another great read by Angela J. Ford!! I loved the world she built for the series. It is a bit hard to understand the world at times. I just pushed through it and eventually got the ending I needed.

It was a bit long for my taste, but her first standalone to this series “Music of the Night” was a perfect length.

It was dreamy and it was giving!! Cannot wait to buy more of her titles!!

I read this book thanks to Angela and the team behind it, as they provided me with an ARC.

The story is quite grim and gothic, you could almost say it's a retelling of beauty and the beast, Mila and Ezra were a lovely couple and I loved every part of their development, I wish we could have had more of other characters that come out in the book and to know a little more about our main character Ezra and his nature.

Wow. This book was beautifully written. Mila, so strong and courageous really made this book good. She was fun, flirty and didn’t back down when she was scared. Instead, she fought and that’s what I love, a strong female lead. (Also, she has purple hair and that’s amazing). Erza wasn’t as morally grey as I prefer, but he was sweet and caring.

Also the spice was solid. The lake scene? *chefs kiss*

quick read! kind of has a Eurydice and orpheus or Hades and persephone vibe. tons of diversity without feeling too performative. plot was meh but interesting enough to actually finish. hot take but it felt like the author was trying too hard to prove that she can create a book with healthy communication between love interests? idk how to explain further than semi girl boss gifted kid meets troubled grief stricken golden retriever.
