It’s been many years since the Purge that wiped out the Guardians, leaving their Havens in ashes and ruin.
In the years that followed, Oddities were hunted down and killed by the new galactic power, the Leaguers. Those that survived buried their gifts and hide among the masses.
Larkon was thirteen the day he lost everything.
Now enslaved, Larkon serves Lord Caster of Bashmite in a numb haze, until one day, another Oddity comes into his life, reminding him of things he’d wished to forget. He may not have died in the Purge, but there’s more to life than just surviving.
With a galaxy in turmoil, everywhere you turn, someone is suffering. But the times are changing, and Larkon soon learns his part to play against the Leaguers may not be over.

Had been part of brainstorming/reading early snippets, and this was still so much more than I was expecting! I want much, much, much more!
(Also, should it be concerning how much my tolerance for weird sci-fi concepts like element powers goes up when you toss some sort of engineered genetic anomaly in the mix? XP)
Intriguing sci-fi setting Love the ongoing elements of mystery in Larkon's past Love, love, love Larkon and Konnon together
Content--slavery, gladiatorial-type combat with monster-beasts, mentions of what basically amounts to genocide, mentions of drunkenness
This was such an enjoyable, fast paced read. It felt like Star Wars meets Avatar but with a unique twist and I can't wait to read the second book. Larkon and Konnon are the sweetest and I love both of them so much. The "guy accidentally adopts a child" trope is one of my absolute favorites and their relationship is so sincere and I would like to adopt Konnon too. The snippets from Larkon's past are incredibly intriguing and I kind of want to learn the bit of vocabulary given for his home language.
After reading the Of the Stars series in less than two days, I promptly decided that I needed to forego any further doubt about sci-fi as a genre and finally picked up this book. And wow. That hit hard.
I purposely didn't read the back cover so I wouldn't know a lot about it, and I'm glad I did - it was kinda fun going in and not knowing what to expect. I really didn't expect to see the battle against human trafficking in the way it was portrayed, but it worked so well with the story. I can't wait to see how this particular thread progresses through the series. And the language! I loved being able to flip back and forth to the appendix and see what all the words meant. That was a great touch and made the story that much deeper.
Larkon and Konnon were the absolute best together. Larkon was such a dear, brave protecter, and Konnon . . . I have no words, he was adorable. And together? Dang, my heart just about melted.
