4.5/5

I absolutely loved this book. This series has my whole heart. But -.5 on rating for limery only coming back at the 80% mark. He is 90% off the reason I read these books. Soooooo couldn't be a perfect 5 without him.

Giant tortoise battle? Count me in. Best book in the series so far.

I’ve been following this series for quite a while and have enjoyed it. I love the premise. Roland did a good job of building on the first two books and the amount of depth he adds to the characters in book three, especially Chod, really took me by surprise.

For me there is a good balance of stats and story without it becoming overwhelming, but keeping the aspects that I really enjoy in litrpg novels.

The only negative thing, which I’m not sure if it is negative for many others, but it takes a little bit for me to adjust to a 1st person present narrative. After the first chapter, though, I was immersed back in the world and I didn’t notice it any longer.

I’d definitely suggest giving this series a chance, I really don’t think you will be disappointed.

These books are really beginning to run together. It hardly feels like the plot evolves, mostly because there aren't actual challenges or thresholds, really. The heroes traipse from one victory to the next with hardly a setback, and everyone along the way really, really wants to help them (except for the few grumps who exist to be won over or the background villains who twist their moustaches in the background). Honestly I'm getting a little bored with the lack of tension and suspense.

The ancient portals that allow fast travel across the Isle of Mythos have been opened once more. Chod had been enjoying the newfound peace and acceptance he has won as the Hero of the Forest Trolls, travelling in company with his best friend from outside the game. While several portals still remain closed, hiding somewhere out there are the human rogue heroes plotting Chod’s demise. Now, Chod has only one goal - unite the heroes of Mythos. Fail and he loses everything.

I felt like this one was meant to open up the world of Mythos, and it left a lot of loose threads in the first few books. Like what happened to the rest of the mana worms? Some were killed and some were tamed, but did they all get accounted for? I kept thinking we’d see the wrap up of that and then there was the counsel of multiple races. I am hoping that they are discussed and or met more in the next three books.

And it seems like Chad/Chod really hasn’t learned his lesson well enough, because he meets nearly every challenge with violence and anger. Which has come back to bite him on the ass a number of times throughout all three books. I am invested in the side characters and so will probably keep with the series through the end, but this one was a slog to get through.

Content Warnings:
Major - Fantasy violence
Moderate - Bullying,
Minor - Blood, Death, Injury/Injury detail

Good book and good series.

I enjoyed this book and it makes a good continuation of the series. The action is fairly even throughout the book as the MC does some much need grinding. He is also scrambling for more allies to defend the island. Th He plot arc doesn't advance much but proof of the big bad Dark Wizard is presented to motivate the races on the fence. There was a lack of meaningful IRL interaction but I expect that to increase later. There is a remarkable lack of state so if those bother you this is your book/series. I personally like more but story is more important. I look forward to the next book.I hope the wait is short.

Spoiler
So what happened to the loot from the PVP battle?

The portals have awakened. No one saw to which exit portal Glen and Jude went to. The Dwarves are sending people through to all destinations that are able to receive people. The heroes are going through to try and find allies and people who will fight on the side of good or at least not evil. Glen and Jude have a four hour head start. We have information from the archives, but the portals have been closed for so long, is it still accurate? The stakes are rising, with most portals open, how long before the ancient evil returns. If you are wondering why Chod is still in game, it’s because when he tried to leave the AI started freaking out thinking an essential piece of the program went missing so he had to go back in to save his friends.

Sorry, I really wanted to love this series because I LOVED the author's other "kinda" series (Books can be read as standalone, Tales of Aedrea) but I couldn't. The few aspects I enjoyed from the first one and second were not enough to keep me interested on the third one. Same issues, we have 2 people who are not acting as they are supposed to, so why keep them on the "game". The adventure part is lost in between all the convoluted unnecessary storyline. Maybe it is a me thing, but too much angst and not enough fun, which is the reason I read fantasy. Dropping the series. Onto my next adventure, Happy Readings!!!

Sentenced to Troll 3

Probably the best out of the first three books. The first three books gradually introduced new elements of the world to Chod. I think what I was wanting from Books 1 and 2 was more cool and interesting lore, but Rowland was focused on the story of Chod, rightfully so. But this book made things feel bigger, and I think this is where the overall narrative really starts moving. Super fun and exciting adventure with enjoyable characters to follow. Can’t wait to listen to the next one!

Book 3 complete - looking for 4 possible spoiler

Binge worthy series.
No cliffhanger.
I can’t wait for book 4.
If there isn’t a book 4, 3 ended in a good spot.

I’m worried about a character they briefly defend/work with - not naming names yes there’s stigmatism on the type of character but could it just be an act to use Chod and gain access to spread chaos/darkness?

This series never fails. Every time I pick up the newest offering the author brings me right back into the world. He rekindles the old hatreds and fires up passions for the struggles of the heroes. He keeps the story fresh and you are never sure what is around the next turn. Great job and keep up the great writing.

Book three

Mistakes: The only thing I found wrong was in the salt dungeon. Stompy seems to suddenly not exist after the first chamber until they clear the dungeon. Likely due to the fact that there was no way to get him past the last chamber.

Plot: Finding allies and clearing dungeons.

Characters: This is more about the side characters than the main hero.

Good

Good, but a little disappointing. It just seemed like it had a little bit too much fluff. I’ve read other LitRPGs that were better, and others that were worse. There was one phrase in the story that was really strange. A character will “cut their eyes” toward another character. I’m not sure what that is supposed to mean. Glaring, maybe?

An Excellent LitRPG Series.

Chod continues his heroic journey amid growing evidence of an approaching war with a resurgent ancient evil. This novel is an excellent extension of the plot and character development begun in the previous two novels. Hopefully the fourth volume of this series will be available soon.

Really fun series and characters

This is a really fun series and set of characters. The world is interesting, there is a lot of action and magic. I also liked the real world interaction and it will be interesting how the changes hinted at in those descriptions plays out in future books. I definitely enjoyed this book and series and recommend both.

Troll’s are great!

I’ve been reading this character for a while. I find that his growth in storyline is fun to keep up. He makes them same mistakes that many of us would make. And yet learns and grows in wisdom thru the story.

Another good read

Another good book, can't wait for the next one. What else could I say? Enthralled enough by the story to want to continue reading about the characters it's a pretty good endorsement, right? Went in directions I did not expect too.

I am really enjoying the direction that this series is going. It is fun that the adventuring group is growing. Chod gets a cool new weapon. Though I don’t feel like he made much level progress. There was plenty of plot progress. I’m excited to see where the next book takes us.

Great story

I really enjoy how the MC in this story grows. It has a real feel to it. I also love the face that he wins by changing his tactics and through Team Work.

Fast paced with lots of action

I like the amount of action in this book and that it doesn’t get too slow. Other books in this genre can focus too much on stats and can get boring.
