Another great 1st issue. Bruce has figured a way to control the Hulk and his anger which allows him to increase his strength at will. Now he is piloting the Hulk like a damn spaceship. So much potential available. Looking forward to see where this goes.
This was a fun idea. I like crazy ass Bruce as the bad guy/good guy here. I think it's cool to see like a Gundam piloted Hulk and it was fun. It's not as deep or dark as the previous Immortal hulk but that's okay. Change is good. Ryan kills it with art. A 3 out of 5.
This is, literally, a "crushing start". Can Bruce Banner be the worst part of his dual personality? Donny Cates say "Yes"! My mind was blown away with this first issue.
I've been reading through the trades of Ewing's Immortal Hulk and really been digging that, so I decided to give this new Hulk series a shot. The first few pages almost turned me off altogether -- we get a scene of Bruce as an Angry White Man...which he is, but I don't need a story exploring the angry White Man-ness of the Hulk. The thing I really love about Ewing's Immortal Hulk is how he explores these esoteric, mythic, strange dimensions of the Hulk's monstrosity.
Fortunately, I kept reading because Cate's seems poised to do some weird shit with the Hulk, too! I'm very intrigued by memory palaces (a la The Book of Memory), so the prospect of Banner deconstructing his psyche and rebuilding it as a metaphorical-actual Hulk-ship is super rad.
I'm interested enough by the seeds of these concepts to see how they develop over an issue or two. That said, it still seems like Banner being an Angry White Man is at the core of the Hulk-spaceship-memory-palace, so I hope that isn't the theme that Cates emphasizes most throughout this series.
The Hulk has always been one of my favorite Marvel characters but he’s also probably one of the hardest ones to write well. A lot of writers are content to have the big guy smash some stuff and call it a day when really Bruce Banner is one of the more tragic and interesting heroes, when he’s approached the right way. Donny Cates approaches him the right way. “Hulk #1,” the first issue of the “Smashtranaut” arc, flips the whole Hulk/Banner dynamic on its head and it’s kinda terrifying. Ryan Ottley’s art is really dynamic and interesting - his Spider-Man is honestly one of the best versions of all time - and Peach Momoko’s “La Luna”-inspired variant cover is *chef’s kiss* Can’t wait to see how wild this team gets with this run.
I started reading comics at age 6 when The Death of Superman was taking place around 1991.
I read comics most of the 90s but almost exclusively DC.
Then I didn't pick up comics again until about 2016 and now in 2022 I've collected hundreds and hundreds of issues and trades.
Again mostly DC but I've been collecting Spider-man and loads of my favourite Marvel hero, She-Hulk and I'm so excited for her new series! Issue #1 was so fun!
THE REVIEW --------------------- HULK #1 Donny Cates
Okay first I gotta mention that even though Marvel is more successful then DC I consistantly find that DC's art is much stronger. And that's about the only weakness to this issue, the art is good, but not great.
Okay so I've said a lot but I've really held back what I think of this issue, and I gotta say I ABSOLUTELY and TOTALLY LOVE this issue and can tell this series is gonna be off the wall awesomeness!
Holy shit it's super sci fi and at one point a character rips a part of their own body off to escape and it just blew my mind! I've already cracked open issue #2 and am so excited to get issues #3 and #4 next time I'm in my comic shop!
This issue mostly focuses on a battle between Tony Stark as Ironman and Bruce Banner as Starship Hulk, the entire Avengers team plus some FF appear but this is mostly a 1 and 1 battle.
In a way a small amount happens but the concepts and revelations are so cool that I just have to continue this series!
I'm not sure that this qualifies as sequel to Immortal Hulk (a modern masterpiece and the definitive Hulk story) but it's in the same continuity. Am I mad that they erased the "Happy-Bruce-walks-into-the-sunset-Ending"? Not really because that's how comics work, you can't expect permanence when you want to produce endless content. The reason I liked and got hooked from the first issue (something that's nice when it happens) is because that it presents with an interesting argument:
What if the Hulk exists to protect us from Banner?
When I read that my jaw hit the floor and in general it's a solid first step.
Cates take on the Hulk involves Banner using the Hulk as a starship which I am assuming is all in the Hulk's head at this point. The Hulk destroys Iron man ( seems to be a theme ) which in a way apes the movie Avengers: Age of Ultron battle scene between the two heroes as a deranged Banner heads out into the space fulfilling his determination to get away. Visually and idea-wise this is certainly a totally out of left field story line and I have faith that Cates will deliver the goods as weird as this first issue turned out to be.

A question: what if the Hulk (H) was not the real threat...what if Bruce Banner (BB) was the real threat? And what would happen if BB finally decided to embrace this; channeling H rage as a way to prevent a catastrophic event he could not control? A very original take on the BB/H paradox - get ready for a bumpy ride!
This was a freebie with an order and … that’s probably the most I would pay for it. It’s not that it’s bad (it actually seems to be setting up an interesting storyline about how to deal with the Hulk), but I’m not interested enough in the character to buy more issues of this title.
I really like this one! Nice take on the Hulk/Banner duality. Great fight/battle as well and a plot that is very promising! I'm so curious to see the next one! Great intro!
