Sentinals #3.5

Sentinals Recovery

Rate this book
Sentinals Recovery is a novella set in the world of Remargaren. It occurs immediately after the battle at Oprimere. Although this is a complete story, the reader would benefit from reading the first three books in the series.

Birlerion is recovering from the near fatal injuries he received in his second, epic battle with the Ascendants. He returns home to Greenswatch, the Watch that adopted him, to recuperate and finally meet his Darian stallion, Kin’arol, who has been waiting, somewhat impatiently, to bond with him.

Only Kin’arol is not there. Someone has stolen him. For such a distinctive horse, he has vanished into thin air.
Though not fully recovered, and still hampered by his injuries, Birlerion sets off, accompanied by his brother Versillion, to recover his horse. Not even Assassins, belligerent Terolians or the harsh Terolian desert will stop him from bonding with Kin’arol, though his failing body might.

Sentinals Recovery
I received an ARC copy of this book, and I am freely giving an honest review.

Here we have yet another amazing book from, Helen Garraway – albeit a novella. In this book it chronicles the lifespan of one of the best loved characters of her Sentinals Series – Birlerion. It is the story of the reticent young man who is Jerrol Haven’s shadow, but as each layer of his life is revealed, we learn more about the young man, who has lived within two time zones 1124 and 4125, and is still only a mere 20 years of age. To everyone who has no close connect with him, he is an enigma, yet he has seen more destruction and devastation than someone three times his age. He is, after all, the Lady Leyandrii’s shield.

Once again Helen Garraway weaves her magic so well as she lets us into the mind of this young Sentinal. Slowly we discover the pain and heartache that he has undergone, both in this time and three thousand years back. Having incurred horrific injuries at the battle of Oprimere, we find him recovering inside his Sentinal, with the help of Marguerite, Leyandrii’s sister, who is also the Healer of the Earth, who has remained with him. Only later, through her does he discover the immensity of the loss of life they suffered at the battle.
Throughout the book Birlerion goes through many transitions, and discoveries, but his main quest it to find his Darian horse. Even this task does not come without trauma, narrowly escaping yet another war. Here he is helped in his mission by a young child called Rigs who manages to rescue his Darian from its captors. But the child is much more than she seems, with hidden powers yet to be discovered.

As with all of Helen Garraway’s books, you can never second guess what will happen, and at every new turn, she brings you to more situations that you would not have anticipated. Her innate writing capability of retaining your attention at all times, makes her books ‘unputdownable’ You are ensnared, and lost in the world of Remargaren from the very first paragraph. A beautiful read.

I was sent this ARC for Sentinals Recovery and this is my honest review for it.

I'm glad that Helen could not fit this in to Sentinals Justice as this story dedicated to Birlerion was exactly what I needed. He is my favourite character. I was so glad to see more Arifel in this book too!!

Birlerion is currently recovering after the events at the end of book 3 which very nearly ended him (I don't want to spoil too much here -but epic battle you need to go and read books 1-3). He is looking forward to travelling to Greens to finally bond with his new Darian but finds out he has been stolen. Against guidance he travels to Terolia to discover what has become of his companion only to find he ends up with more of a mission then he bargained for.

What a story. What a world. I'm glad we travelled back to Terolia in this story as what a beautiful and majestical country. So many great scenes in this and again we are reminded of why not only was Bilerion chosen as a Sentinal but how great he was before as the Lady's Ranger.  Loved the story of how he met Kayerille. Such a super hero!

He goes from strength to strength in this book despite his recovery and guided by the Lady. He once again saves so many lives and guides so many paths with his words and actions. You can see why he is held in such high esteem by the other Sentinals and the other people and families he meets and helps.

A great ending to this novella too with a couple of familiar faces making an appearance at  the end.

I would love to see this series as a t.v  show. Seeing the characters come alive would be awesome.

Cannot wait for book 4 to be released and such an intriguing title too!!!

Sentinals Recovery is live!

So excited to share my fourth book with you. Especially as this was unplanned, an extra Christmas bonus if you will!

For those who entered the Giveaway, congratulations on winning a copy of my latest novel. I hope you enjoy reading it. I look forward to your thoughts!

Sentinals Recovery follows the recovery of Birlerion after the battle at Oprimere. But it is also about the recovery of his Darian stallion, who has been waiting impatiently for him to return to Greenswatch to bond with him.

What seems a simple task, soon evolves into a much more difficult quest, as Birlerion battles his failing body as well as those who want to prevent another Darian from leaving Terolia.

This book was a joy to write, and also opens many doors for future novels in the series. The ideas just keep bubbling which is amazing and fortunate for those of you have started the adventure. I hope you are loving the Sentinal series as much as I am and stay for the journey. There is plenty more still to come.

Sentinals Recovery is a novella. Although this is a stand alone story. I recommend that you read the first three stories. You may miss a lot of necessary the background. In this episode we have Birlerion recovering from near fatal injuries, so he returns to his adopted home. Here he can recuperate and bond with his stallion Darian Stalion, Kin’arol. Kin’arol is not there he has been kidnapped. Although he has not recovered Birlerion heads out to find his stallion. Birlerion feels that none of his enemies would have stopped him from bonding with Darian. Who has stolen Darien? Birlerion is not well. Will he survive this rough, emotionally charged journey? Who has done this dastardly deed? A great read. I recommend this novella, and suggest you read the novels in order. I was given an advanced reader copy of the novel and I provided an honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly great book

What a great tribute to Sentinal Birlerion who is most deserving of having his story of the recovery of his illness and of his coming together with his Darian written for all to enjoy. Helen Garraway has hit a home run with book 3.5. The story is very rewarding by filling in a lot of gaps and it also puts a wonderful finishing touch to the romantic and political side of things. I wonder what quests remain to be concluded in book 4. Will Birlerion find his true home and his soul mate? Will the Lady ever return to him or is she really gone forever? We will just have to wait and see.
I absolutely loved this book. It is in my opinion, a tremendous effort on the author's behalf and wow, such a rewarding read. Having read the first three books in the series which were nothing short of amazing, I have to say that it is one of the best series of books out there today. It is both rewarding and fulfilling and one that I most definitely recommend. I lost many a good night's sleep on this series. Most definitely one that is truly impossible to put down!!!
I am anxiously awaiting book 4 in the series and I know that Ms. Garraway will outdo herself once again!!! EK

Birlerion. There are many sides of him we’ve seen through this journey. Never though have we seen him in such a state as this. So battered. Gasping to find his next breath. Struggling to remain standing. Recovering for so long. Yet the how he reached this state is no surprise. It should have killed him, but somehow it didn’t. How did he survive? Because he is the Birlerion we’ve come to know, and this is his story. He has experienced loss like few have ever known, but shoulders it alone. He prefers to shed his tears apart from others to spare them his agony. He is a protector. All the sentinals are. Yet Birlerion is the Protector. He exemplifies it to its fullest. He is the Protector to the Lady’s Captain. To his fellow brother and sister sentinals. To those the Captain holds dear. To the realm of Remargaren that stretches beyond what the eye can see. Repeatedly he is the barrier between the enemy and Remargaren, giving no thought if it means making his last stand. This time it almost was the case. Who is Birlerion? He is Remargaren, the heart of it. And just as Remargaren will slowly, but painfully heal from its battle scars, Birlerion must endure and regain his strength again for this trial and whatever else lays ahead.

I was so excited to read this side story in the Sentinals series, thus finishing off the series (at least thus far). Technically it's billed as a novella, but it's 200+ pages and definitely works as a full-length read.
Birlerion is definitely my favorite character in the series. He just goes through so much. I love stories about recovery and healing (Hurt/comfort is definitely my favorite fanfic tag), and he definitely deserves some after the physical and mental trauma he's experienced. But this novella actually introduced me to a new favorite character as well: Ari, who is basically a cat/dragon hybrid. Ari was so adorable, and the relationship between him and Birlerion was so pure and sweet. If you love animals this is a great one for you, since the central plot ALSO focuses on an animal: the magic horse Birlerion is trying to find.
This was something of a cozier story, which I appreciated. It focused on side characters from the other books, which helped make it feel like a fuller and more real story overall. I don't think this one stands on its own (you'll need to ahve read the other books in the series) but I'd urge you not to skip it if you're reading the Sentinals series.

Sentinals Recovery picks up from where Sentinals Justice left off with the focus very much on Sentinal Birlerian, who I must say has become one of my favourite characters. Birlerian returns home to bond with his Darian, ‘Kin’arol’ and recuperate however someone has stolen him. With his injuries still impeding him, Birlerian must dig deep within himself to find the physical strength to locate and rescue Kin’arol. Neither the threat of the Assassins or the harsh environment of the Terolian desert will break his resolve to be bonded with his Darian.

This series just gets better and better with each book that Helen writes, and I simply adore the Sentinals. The reader is truly invested with each character, so perfectly described, and developed through the narration and dialogue to make them completely memorable and highly engaging. With their emotional and spiritual connections to the (Darians) this is simply divine reading for me!

I award 5 stars.

Excellent continuation of book 3. Picked up right where the pieces fell. We got to learn more about Birlerion and explore much more in depth the culture and diversity of the desert dwelling Terolians. I also fully enjoyed the deeper dive into relationships between bonded Darians and their riders. Highly recommend!

Beautiful story

I loved reading this tale centered around Birlerian. We watch him recover and learn so much more about the Sentinal and his importance.
Helen has an amazing way of telling a story that you feel as though you're a spirit in the air around the characters.
I highly recommend reading this novella if you're reading (and loving) The Sentinal Series.

I continue to absorb Helen Garraway's Sentinels.

I just love all of Helen Garraway's Sentinels series. I am so glad she decided to flesh out Berlerion's story and let us watch him retrieve his Darian. Excellent work from an excellent author. 👏

I enjoyed Sentinals Recovery. Well written. Entertaining story. Provided additional background for who certain characters are. However, please check dates, I could be wrong but some of this story seems to occur in 4124 and 4125, did I read it wrong?

What a great look into one life!

This side story just was needed to add to the Sentinel life. But it also gave us more information on how important the bond was between them and the horse!
