Freedom Is Costly, But Priceless: If Not Maintained, It Will Not Remain

Rate this book
The key to America’s future begins with exploring our past. In Freedom Is Costly, But Priceless, Dave Meyer shares the importance of our nation’s true history—learning about our rich, godly heritage and discovering Who and what has made this nation so great. God’s Word was an integral part of our nation’s founding, and His Word is still the key today to restoring our families, schools, churches and communities.   When it comes to the future of this nation, each one of us plays a greater role than we can possibly imagine. God has given us the ability to become an unquenchable force for good. We each have an indispensable part to play, and Dave Meyer outlines where to begin and how to take meaningful steps to make a positive change in government and society.

“The time has come that Christians must vote for honest men and take consistent ground in politics…”
- Reverend Charles Finney

I had the opportunity to meet with Dave Meyer two years ago in my area at a Joyce Meyer Conference. There, I was able to buy both this book, and the book that profoundly influenced it, ‘America’s Providential History’ by Stephen McDowell and Mark Beliles. It was a unique time in our history as a nation. We were just opening up businesses from Covid, many were scared, elections were questioned, and it felt as if our 300 year old freedoms were drawing to a close.

“A complacent Church and a Christian nation cannot coexist; both will eventually die!”
- Dave Meyer

This book opened my eyes to a lot! For one, We the People ARE the government of the United States. Not Presidents, Senators, Congressmen, or Supreme Court Justices. The leaders we have installed work for us NOT the other way round. We are RESPONSIBLE for putting them in office, and if they work against our founding documents, we are REQUIRED to remove them.

Now more than ever, the people are responsible for the character of their Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless, and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness, and corruption. If it be intelligent, brave, and pure, it is because the people demand these high qualities to represent them in the national legislature.... If the next centennial does not find us a great nation... it will be because those who represent the enterprise, the culture, and the morality of the nation do not aid in controlling the political forces.”
- President James A. Garfield

However, many in the Church have only laid down and passively accepted what the government says. Our understanding has been warped by our lack of knowledge of our history. When Thomas Jefferson coined the phrase “separation of Church and State”, he wasn’t saying there needs to be a wall between the two. He was actually giving the Danbury Baptist congregation Hope saying that the State has NO AUTHORITY interfering with the Church, it’s message, or it’s influence UPON the State.

Because of a complete 180 perversion of Jefferson’s words in the 1920’s. It led to decisions in the 1940’s and 1960’s banning prayer and Bibles in schools. Since the sixties, America’s students rank lower on key tests, and education has only been decreasing as it continues to lower it’s standards giving our children less and less information, appeasing lower SAT scores instead of actively working to increase the faculties of their young minds. We as a nation have become increasingly more uneducated and ignorant because of this.

Also in the 1920’s was an introduction into our Founding Fathers being secular deists rather than religious and righteous. But our Founders believed in Freedom OF Religion not Freedom FROM Religion. But Jefferson is quoted with saying,

"God who gave us life gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are the gift of God? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, that His justice cannot sleep forever.”

Benjamin Franklin with these words,
“Here is my Creed. I believe in one God, Creator of the Universe. That he governs the World by his Providence. That he ought to be worshiped.”
And these words:
“I have lived a long time, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth—that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid?”

Our nation has a rich Godly history. So much so, that when foreign leaders came over, it was the altars and the cathedrals that impressed them more mightily then anything else.

"I sought for the greatness and genius of America in her commodious harbors and her ample rivers and it was not there... in her fertile fields and boundless forests- and it was not there...in her rich mines and her vast world commerce and it was not there.. in her democratic Congress and her matchless Constitution and it was not there. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits aflame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because she is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, she will cease to be great."
- Alexis de Tocqueville, a French political scientist and historian who visited the United States in the early 1800s.

It’s time for the greatness of America to return. No longer shall we be a Nation upon which the glory of God slowly departs from us until He has lifted His Providential Hand from us completely and we don’t even recognize He ever left. But we shall be a Nation that God delights in. A Nation that showcases His raw power and preeminence. One Nation Under God…

Dave Meyer gave me an insight into the importance of the body of Christ in America being involved in our government. While reading I felt so many emotions, especially disappointment: disappointment in myself for not becoming more involved in researching history instead of just believing what my instructors told me, and disappointment in the public school system that I taught in for 32 years for covering up the truth! My eyes have truly been open!

This is a rough read but insightful for how some people think. I get why people like it, it tells them everything is going to be okay if they blindly listen to what Dave says and that they don’t need to have any self reflection. It blames and points fingers and fear mongers, but is that really what Christianity is? Dave cherry picks bible verses to fit his narrative “better dead than red.” I am surprised his wife let him publish this book, but hey if you want to support their mega church and buy them another private jet while kids go hungry, buy this book.

I enjoyed this book as an introduction to the origins of true freedom and liberty we consider to be American values. It is an easy read and Dave focuses on imparting the need for true American history to be taught and a return to the values that made us strong as a nation. I only gave three stars because I felt that he gleaned heavily from Americas Providential History, which is much more in-depth on this topic.
